GravatarGeez, I wouldn't go back to that dump on a bet!

Gravatarwhatever.

GravatarA triple's the most exciting play in baseball, they say.

GravatarlbDt:

David Derbes: I respectfully disagree. The Church Commission outlawed such things. Beyond that, the reference to "Munich" (the movie) leads me to think that people were gunned down not in Iraq, but elsewhere (maybe Germany, where several of the 9/11 hijackers had lived), and that others died besides the so-called bad guys.

If Cheney ordered this stuff, and if the US follows its own laws, Cheney is in serious trouble.

I see your point, but it assumes a whole lot more detail than what's outlined in the WSJ article (which I maintain was written as cover for what REALLY got Panetta hot, and caused Cheney to break the law... all of which could fit nicely in the framework you outlined).

GravatarI asked, and we have received. Thank you, Liberal Blogger.

Agreed. Cheney had a DOMESTIC spying program almost certainly.

Gravatar Karatist Preacher: 'Safe environment' means the white folks are notified in advance.

Bingo.

GravatarWell, that's the Republican thing to do, eh? When you are caught breaking the law or acting in a manner that could be interpreted as breaking the law, you go for a do-over.

Mark Sanford paying back the money he used to visit his mistress in SA. This swim club hoping to make amends (and avoid the inevitable law suit) now wants to make nice.

You really get one chance to do the right thing without being corrected: if you blow it, then the consequences are yours.

GravatarIf Cheney ordered this stuff, and if the US follows its own laws, Cheney is in serious trouble.

We can hope.

When will Boner make a statement that he doesn't believe any of this and that Pelosi owes the CIA and the republics an apology?

GravatarDear AssHead Pool Manager,

You had your shot, and you fucked it up.

Gravatar"NEGRO DAY!"

GravatarWhat white kid wants to swim in nigra or spic pee?

Gravatar Billy B: When will Boner make a statement that he doesn't believe any of this and that Pelosi owes the CIA and the republics an apology?

He did that last week. Probably again, tomorrow.

So they can stay home on those days. Which is what will happen, so the pool won't be "crowded."

GravatarThere is a pool additive that turns pee dark blue, it's been around for decades.

Gravatarhey QL!

are you on facebook?

Gravatar plantsman: There is a pool additive that turns pee dark blue, it's been around for decades.

It causes cancer, though. Or white mice, one.

GravatarHe did that last week. Probably again, tomorrow.

I should have mentioned that. The statement from Boner last week was the second similar statement concerning Pelosi and the CIA he'd made.

It should be pointed out that Boner is calling Panetta a liar when he says he doesn't believe the story.

heh.

GravatarAs lousy as things have been during the Bush administration, and even for the past forty years, on this one front we seem to have made real progress:

Institutional racism is now recognized as wrong.

I think even personal racism is widely acknowledged as wrong, and a personal failing.

Let's say your son or daughter has fallen madly in love with someone, and brings them home to meet you. This person is charming, bright, funny, and clearly loves your son or daughter. But at some point during the dinner, drinks, whatever, she or he makes a remark that leads you to think that this otherwise attractive person is a racist.

That would probably be enough to me to not want my kid to continue in this relationship, despite all the other positives.

GravatarBy "safe" do they mean they're going to teach the day camp kids to be afraid of the dark skinned people?

GravatarIt does have the effect of discouraging pool-peeing, in many cases.

Gravatarcokie roberts is a republican.

GravatarCokie Roberts is also a well-known moron.

Gravatarsee your point, but it assumes a whole lot more detail than what's outlined in the WSJ article (which I maintain was written as cover for what REALLY got Panetta hot, and caused Cheney to break the law... all of which could fit nicely in the framework you outlined).

Jeffraham, public option

And now I see yours, Jeffraham, that this is a sort of "limited, modified hang-out" in the Nixonian vocabulary. Very probable. I was too dumb to see this; thanks for the clarification.

But I don't think it will work, because Hersh probably has a story rarin' to go.

We'll see. There may be a lot of news today.

Gravatar David Derbes: We'll see. There may be a lot of news today.

GravatarYeah, Sociopathy is what 'pukes look for in a judge.

GravatarCokie wanted to tell us that if the House passed a bill and the Senate left on vacation, that would leave the enormously expensive house proposal up to be pummeled on costs.

I think it's going to be interesting to see the Senate place its vacation ahead of getting a health reform bill.

GravatarWhas up, ma uighers!

GravatarLiz Cheney:

Asked at a NATO meeting in France in April whether he believed in American exceptionalism, the president said, "I believe in American Exceptionalism just as I suspect that the Brits believe in British exceptionalism and the Greeks believe in Greek exceptionalism." In other words, not so much.

The Obama administration does seem to believe in another kind of exceptionalism -- Obama exceptionalism. "We have the best brand on Earth: the Obama brand," one Obama handler has said. What they don't seem to realize is that once you're president, your brand is America, and the American people expect you to defend us against lies, not embrace or ignore them. We also expect you to know your history.

To defend us against lies, the first step would be to stuff a gag in your fucking mouth.

GravatarMorning, all.

Apologies for the blogwhore, but over at Box Office I sing the praises of the greatest dramatic film ever made about rock and roll -- which has, inexplicably, never been on home video, either tape or DVD. Complete with clip of the amazing Screaming Jay Hawkins in full mau-mau regalia.

Sorry. What lesson would that teach then? It's okay to be a racist as long as you are not caught at it?

And if you are caught breaking the laws of this country and the social mores, a do over is just the ticket to avoid responsibility for your actions?

No. I believe the place should be sued and the day camp end up owning the place while the members pay their dues to the day care and their lawyers.

That is a teachable moment.

I remember the civil rights days, watching those brave souls integrate U of Mississippi, George Wallace and the like. I'd like to think we can get way beyond that if the pool club members are challenged to step up and behave.

Plus I think this could be important for the camp kids. It might give them a chance to show some dignity.

GravatarOh, the old "Hire'em thru a temp agency" benefits dodge.

GravatarNice Polite Republicans earning their keep today. NPR's Mary Louise Kelly spoke with co-host Steve Inskeep about the covert program that Dick Cheney ordered the CIA not to tell Congress about. Inskeep asked if the CIA has a duty to brief congress, to which Mary Louise said, “That’s not clear.” (????!!!) Then she said they only have to brief on “significant” matters and they must not have thought this was significant. Also, the CIA has been concerned that briefing congress would lead to leaks, and the fact that we are talking about the program today proves they were right! Fuck oversight, I heard someone say.

And raise your hand if you think the leak today that the program was to “kill or capture Al Qaeda operatives” was orchestrated by Cheney’s stooges to make congress, Panetta and Obama appear weak.

Arrghhhhhh! I wish somebody would assure me of that. I need a job and some idea that my life won't go down the drain!

Otherwise known as Republican Moron Kabuki Theatre Day.

GravatarWell if this "secret program" was to kill Bin Ladin, clearly it was a failure as he's still alive and kickin'.

Bunch of fucking morons.

GravatarAnd raise your hand if you think the leak today that the program was to “kill or capture Al Qaeda operatives” was orchestrated by Cheney’s stooges to make congress, Panetta and Obama appear weak.

Well, the wisdom of having such a program at all is a different matter than the decision to keep Congress in the dark about it. Clearly it was illegal to not brief Congress about this since there's no way this is not a significant program.

I also think it's a stupid idea, although it would have been less stupid if someone besides Dr. Evil and his incompetent henchmen behind it.

GravatarDO NOT watch sotomoyor's confirmation hearings. it will be full of pointless grandstanding by the GOP that will give you ulcers.

Indeed. The potential wanking factor (PWF) is off the charts.

indeed. they already admitted she is qualified and will be confirmed. this is just BS.

I'm also sure the Republicans will attempt to provoke a race riot.

what a bunch of hypocrites.

GravatarThings you won't hear from the press at the hearings today:

Republican opposition to Sotomayor is proof of their elite disdain for the working class and especially a working class woman.

I think they believe that's only possible if the woman is from Alaska.

GravatarOtherwise known as Republican Moron Kabuki Theatre Day.

A wonderful phrase, since those days come up so often.

GravatarIt'll be interesting to see how Republicans will try to oppose Sotomayor without alienating Latino voters. My guess is that they will throw away the Latino vote and also fail to block Sotomayor's confirmation. Win win.

Gravatarwhat a bunch of hypocrites.

Yes, that was how the country found out that Bork was nuts, and quite a bit to the right of Attila the Hun.

And why every Republican nominee for the bench since has lied shamelessly at their hearings.

The swim club has claimed it has a diverse, multiethnic membership, but Goldman, a member for two years, said she couldn't remember seeing a black member this year.

Hypocrites, indeed.

GravatarWell, it isn't often that the august members of our most deliberative and very silly body get to strut around in their full wanker plumage. Usually, they're just everyday wankers. But confirmation hearings turn it up to 11.

GravatarPeasantParty,MADEINUSA?

Sorry, nah gonna happen. The RICH need your fucking money, K? (Get it and learn it.)

OK. Now it is time for me to don my teacher's hat and ask a question.

If this country has sufficient resources to perform the necessary functions critical to a society: police protection, paved roads, mass transit for the cities and supertrains for between cities with connector routes of either trains or buses, and national defense (Not national offense) AND we have people capable of performing upgrades to our world such as new parks, recreation areas, revamped school systems, a public health system that is fair and responsive: why don't we use our resources to perform that which is necessary utilizing the obvious surplus of workers?

Gravatarres --

You think filing all those lawsuits ISN'T hard work?

Watch out, Ricci will be suing you next.

Gravatar"Could 40 V-22 Osprey's be missing?"

They are probably slatted to carry those missing nuclear warheads. I mean, our Intelligence Agencies are so good they just haven't gotten to the source yet.

Here.

GravatarRes, one of my earlier Latin teachers was from Nashville, and so old, we actually thought there might be truth to the rumor that she had been Caesar's nanny.

She conjugated thus: ah-MOE, ah-MAYUS, ah-MAYAT.

Drove me nuts. Pronounced the author of De Bello Gallico as Juhlayus SEEEZah.

Nice lady, knew her stuff, but her accent made me wince. Had her for two years in a row.

What did Dorothy Parker say? "That woman pronounces 'egg' with three syllables."

Gravatar"Could 40 V-22 Osprey's be missing?"

The Marines are using the Jedi Mind Shit to keep them hidden. "These are not the Osprey's you're looking for."

diversity = blacks?

the faculty of my department is one of the most diverse group of individuals you could imagine. just about every continent and ethnicity is represented. but it does not include any blacks. does that mean it is not diverse?

GravatarMark B i think they are going the AA and "reverse racism" angle.

Yeah, that'll work with their base, but latinos will know that's bullshit.

GravatarSounds like Mistah Duesler talked to his lawyer.

GravatarThe Fairgrounds Park Riot

African Americans were permitted to swim for the first time at St. Louis, Missouri's Fairgounds Park Pool on June 21, 1949. While approximately forty African American children swam at the pool that afternoon, nearly 200 whites surrounded the pool fence. Violence broke out later that day as the swimmers left the pool. Several men, women and children of both races were hospitalized; however, no one was killed.

Following the riot, segregation was re-instituted and remained in effect for the next twelve months. A federal court ruling in July 1950 by Judge Rubey M. Hulen mandated racial integration.

Tiger Woods is a pretty "Icky" individual. I have little respect for him as a person or a celebrity. Good golfer though.

(A lot of this stems from his suing a paraplegic man who makes his living by doing paintings at the same Augusta Golf Course you mentioned. The man had the temerity to "Use" Tiger's image without him being paid.)

GravatarSorry, DWD, I've always like Woods. I admired his decision this year to wait to return to the tour until his second child was born.

I think he was very young when he began being the super-golfer that he is and he's had to mature with the world watching.

I guess I really don't know who he is though. Unless we actually meet him, we all just pick the things we hear/read about him and make our judgments on those items we select.

And watching him golf amazes me.
