He beat the SIL pretty bad, and to his word, he called for an ambulance and the police. Police go there as he was being put in the ambulance, and asked FIL what happened. He showed them his beatup daughter, and then told them the whole story.
The two cops look at each other, and then say (paraphrasing) - Looks like nothing worth writing up a report, got in the cruiser, and left.

Three hours is not nearly enough time. There were just so many wonders. The next time I go I will bring a notebook so I can take notes. There were just so many wonders that I cannot remember all of the wonders I saw. There was this one large painting - an impressionist - and when you first glanced it at you saw very little but as you stared details coalesced out of the painting as if by magic. Instead of seeing nothing you started seeing gardens and people and children playing and and and and and. (Just fucking WOW!)
And then there was this other large painting of a cityscape that seemed to just suck you into it like a magnet and you felt like you were transformed from flesh and blood into the painting itself. . . .

It was the Nixon's geographical escalation of the Vietnam War itself -- not of the success of the antiwar movement or Congressional fatigue with war - that produced that outcome.
So the real lesson of the Vietnam-Cambodia war is that U.S. elective war is profoundly destabilizing, and that destabilization has a terrible human cost, which may spread beyond the country where the war began.
But there is a further lesson from that war. When Nixon began crying "bloodbath" in 1969 the Vietnam War was already four years old. It was his fateful decision to continue and escalate that war that brought about the Cambodian catastrophe. The longer American wars of occupation are continued, the worse the human and political consequences.
Now history appears to be repeating itself. Once again, after four years of war, a president is crying "bloodbath" even as he appears to be headed toward the geographical escalation of the war. Only this time the escalation will be far more dangerous than was the escalation into Cambodia in 1970.
