Sulaimaniya has confirmed about 800 cases of cholera. Only one person has contracted cholera in Baghdad, according to a report on Monday by the World Health Organization. Cholera has killed 14 people in the past six weeks, the organization said.
Dr. Naeema al-Gasseer, the WHO representative for Iraq, said determining the number of people who had contracted cholera was not as critical to public health as monitoring the pattern and number of new cases.
"At this stage the numbers don't mean much," Gasseer said in a telephone interview from Jordan. "We need to look at the trend, if they are increasing or decreasing."
The only urban area where cholera seems to be rapidly rising is Kirkuk, she said.
Looks like Charles Manson & Dick Cheney are going to have settle for runner-up status.

If the Waldman piece is even close to being true, then there's yet another reason for depression. However...
Seems to me that the "public" has been way in front of both politicians and political media for months, if not years. If acquaintances and relatives in the Bluegrass state are any indication, people are more interested — and involved — in political considerations than at any time in my life since the election of John Kennedy.
People of all sorts are fed up — with the war, with the media, with politicians, and especially with Washington, D. C. I believe people will be furious over the President's veto today. I think they are itching for someone, anyone, with the brains and balls to actually be a leader and not a follower of some consultant's recommendations.

Since the cholera outbreak was first detected in Kirkuk, Northern Iraq, on 14 August 2007, it has spread to 9 out of 18 provinces across Iraq. It is estimated that more than 30 000 people have fallen ill with acute watery diarrhoea, among which 3315 were identified as positive for Vibrio cholerae, the bacterium causing the disease. A total of 14 people are known to have died of the disease. The case-fatality rate has remained low throughout the outbreak indicating that those who have become sick have been able to access adequate treatment on time.
The disease is continuing to spread across Iraq and dissemination to as yet unaffected areas remains highly possible. Epidemiological curves are still rising in the provinces from which the majority of laboratory-confirmed cases have originated, Kirkuk (2309) and Sulaymaniah (870). An increasing number of cases of acute watery diarrhoea has also been reported in Diala, a province neighbouring Baghdad. Although V. cholerae has not yet been laboratory confirmed, the clinical symptoms indicate the presence of cholera. The numbers of cases are remaining stable in Basra, Baghdad, Dahuk, Mosul and Tikrit. However, a case has now been confirmed in Wasit, a province that has previously been unaffected by the outbreak.

From the dead thread below:
Tweets just dissed Gore for not demanding a total recount in FL--that he would then have won.
Help me here, Atriots--I have a very clear memory that FL election law required that a candidate demanding a recount had to be able to show the recount would most likely cause a reversal of the initial outcome. Essentially, one couldn't just say count everything by hand, but had to prove in some way (previous voting patterns, I'm not sure what) that there would be a significant difference as a result of the recount.
My understanding is that the Gore campaign had to choose its recount areas, could not ask for a total recount.
But a very large asshole.

"If the president is really concerned about stopping red ink, we are prepared to introduce legislation that will provide for a war surtax for that portion of military costs related to our military action in Iraq," Rep. David Obey (D-WI) proposed.
If President Bush does not like that cost, he added, he can shut down the war.
Most Republicans derided the idea of a war surtax.
"You pay for the war by winning the war," said Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC). "This is not an accounting exercise. How did we pay for World War II? Everybody rolled up their sleeves and did the best they could."

At first they are just a blur, tiny figures by a river in Peru's Amazon jungle. Then the plane descends, the camera focuses, and you see them: 21 people outside palm huts, the apparent remnants of an uncontacted tribe. They gaze up at the intruder, itself a blur of noise and metal, and a woman carrying arrows gestures aggressively. When the plane makes a second pass the people melt into the jungle.
Article continues
The encounter took place last month by the banks of the Las Piedras river in the Alto Purús national park near Peru's frontier with Brazil. Scientists believe the grainy figures were members of the Mascho Piro tribe, hunter-gatherers who have shunned the outside world.
The contact was fleeting but the repercussions could be profound because this swath of Amazon, 550 miles east of Lima, is at the centre of a battle pitting indigenous rights groups and environmentalists against the Peruvian state, loggers and oil companies.
So that was Lindsay Graham's version of the Chewbacca Defense?

Lindsay Graham for dumbest ass of the day:
World War II
Even before the United States entered the Second World War, increasing defense spending and the need for monies to support the opponents of Axis aggression led to the passage in 1940 of two tax laws that increased individual and corporate taxes, which were followed by another tax hike in 1941. By the end of the war the nature of the income tax had been fundamentally altered. Reductions in exemption levels meant that taxpayers with taxable incomes of only $500 faced a bottom tax rate of 23 percent, while taxpayers with incomes over $1 million faced a top rate of 94 percent. These tax changes increased federal receipts from $8.7 billion in 1941 to $45.2 billion in 1945. Even with an economy stimulated by war-time production, federal taxes as a share of GDP grew from 7.6 percent in 1941 to 20.4 percent in 1945. Beyond the rates and revenues, however, another aspect about the income tax that changed was the increase in the number of income taxpayers from 4 million in 1939 to 43 million in 1945.lusion of a surtax, tax rates ranged from 13 percent on the first $2000 of taxable income to 82 percent on taxable income in excess of $200,000.
"You pay for the war by winning the war," said Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC). "This is not an accounting exercise. How did we pay for World War II? Everybody rolled up their sleeves and did the best they could."
Even NPR mentioned that there was a war tax during WWII.

At the FL Supreme Court, yes, Gore asked for a full count--since the reThugs were claiming it was unfair to not have whole state recount, iirc.
But, early on, I have the memory or some FL state election official (perhaps retired) who said it could not be done without some kind of proof it was worth doing--hence, the Gore people choosing areas they could show would give them more votes....
Some of which were not completed, iirc.

Russia threatened yesterday to cut gas supplies to Ukraine again in a move that appears to reflect its displeasure at the prospect of a new orange government in Kiev.
Gazprom, the state-controlled monopoly, said it would reduce supplies to Ukraine next month unless it settled a bill of more than £6.6bn.
The threat raised the spectre of a renewed dispute between Russia and Ukraine that could affect supplies to western Europe. Russia cut off gas to Ukraine in early 2006.

This bill would shift SCHIP away from its original purpose and turn it into a program that would cover children from some families of four earning almost $83,000 a year. In addition, under this bill, government coverage would displace private health insurance for many children. If this bill were enacted, one out of every three children moving onto government coverage would be moving from private coverage. The bill also does not fully fund all its new spending, obscuring the true cost of the bill's expansion of SCHIP, and it raises taxes on working Americans.
You just know that the $83,000 figure and the 1 of 3 moving off private to public coverage is untrue.

I though Gore only asked for a partial count at the FLSC. If he had asked for a full count, which was after all the right thing to do, he would have had the added bonus of winning the state.
Later media recounts showed the count he was asking for wouldn't have changed the result, but a full count of all ballots in all counties would have put him ahead of the Dipshit.

on Burn's "The War"- does he bring up the fact that black u.s.soldgers had to give up their seats to german pow's being transfered somehwere here in the states?
One of the great thing about Burns' documentary on the war is that it covered our flaws and shortcomings as well as our laudible efforts during those four years. People felt good about the country and its sense of purpose, especially after the camps in Germany, Poland and elsewhere were discovered. That doesn't minimize our shortcomings, of course, but that sense of pride people felt in the USA came through all seven episodes of "The War."
Then today along comes Sen. Graham's nonsensical statement and you realize just how different things really are. He makes no sense; the nation's foreign policy with respect to the middle east makes no sense, and we have a President who can't express a single articulate thought.
Surely somebody is going to come to our rescue.

Wal-Mart Workers Win $62 Million
By MARYCLAIRE DALE
The Associated Press
Wednesday, October 3, 2007; 11:56 AM
PHILADELPHIA -- Wal-Mart workers in Pennsylvania who previously won a $78.5 million class-action award for working off the clock will share an additional $62.3 million in damages, a judge ruled Wednesday.
About 125,000 people will receive $500 each in damages under a state law invoked when a company, without cause, withholds pay for more than 30 days.
Wal-Mart workers in Pennsylvania who previously won a $78.5 million class-action award for working off the clock will receive an additional $62.3 million in damages, a judge ruled Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2007.
A Philadelphia jury last year awarded the workers the exact amount they had sought, rejecting Wal-Mart's claim that some people chose to work through breaks or that a few minutes of extra work here and there was insignificant.
"Just as highly paid executives' promised equity interests or put options or percentage of sale proceeds are protected fringe benefits and wage supplements, so too the monetary equivalents of 'paid break' time cashiers and other employees were prohibited from taking are protected fringe benefits and wage supplements," Philadelphia Common Pleas Judge Mark Bernstein wrote.
Similar suits charging that Wal-Mart violated state wage laws are in play across the country.

OT: Since the cholera outbreak was first detected in Kirkuk, Northern Iraq, on 14 August 2007, it has spread to 9 out of 18 provinces across Iraq.
Yes indeed. If it weren't for them, Howard Dean would have been the candidate in 2004 and we would have been out of Iraq by now.
I do think that Edwards is going to win Iowa. They're not going to vote for a woman or a black man.

Today's AP coverage exposes collusion with Blackwater
AP released a report this morning containing Blackwater head Eric Prince's rebuke to the Congressional committee providing oversight on the Blackwater killings.
"Blackwater Chief Defends Actions in Iraq"
WASHINGTON - The founder of Blackwater USA on Tuesday vigorously defended his private security company against charges of covering up Iraqi civilian deaths, saying 30 of its contractors have been killed while protecting U.S. diplomats and no Americans have died while under its watch.
"There is no better evidence of the skill and dedication of these men," Erik Prince said in remarks prepared for a congressional hearing and obtained by The Associated Press. Prince said there has been a "rush to judgment based on inaccurate information."
The article by AP's Richard Lardner was pre-written using Prince's comments and carefully planned for release this morning. It was on my homepage by 10 est, just as the hearing was set to begin. How did Lardner know Prince "vigorously defended" his company's actions if his testimony had not yet taken place?

Did Limpballs just equate a combat veteran with a terrorist suicide bomber? Hmmm....
Yeah, it's their new rhetorical device and I've noticed it several times recently. Boehner, I think, said this weekend that Dems were using a child as a "human shield" when they had a 12 year old give a radio address.

Hillary Supports War With Iran
By Eli on Tue Oct 2, 2007 at 06:01 pm
First Hillary voted for the godawful Kyl-Lieberman Amendment, claiming that classifying Iran’s Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization somehow “reaffirms [her] policy of engagement” and “robust diplomacy”(!). Now she’s co-sponsoring the Webb Amendment, which purports to require congressional approval before Bush can attack Iran. But:
[I]t allows the following exceptions: First, military operations or activities that would directly repel an attack launched from within the territory of Iran. Second, those activities that would directly thwart an imminent attack that would be launched from Iran. Third, military operations or activities that would be in hot pursuit of forces engaged outside the territory of Iran who thereafter would enter Iran.
Those look like some pretty big exceptions to me, especially considering Seymour Hersh’s latest missive in the New Yorker:

Dorothy Rabinowitz' review of The War in the WSJ is a whiny piece about how it's not upbeat enough for her taste. I understand her frustration - people like her have been using WWII to justify every violent intervention by the US in world affairs ever since. At least 14 women have been crushed to death in a stampede at a train station in northern India, officials say.
The stampede occurred at Mughalsarai, about 350km (217 miles) south-east of Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh.
Thousands of pilgrims were changing trains on their way to a Hindu festival in the holy city of Varanasi. More than 40 other women were injured.
Officials said a sudden platform change announcement coincided with three packed trains arriving at once.

Meyerson is good today:
Opposing the provision of health care to children because it conflicts with one's faith in an economic future (capitalism insures everyone) that capitalism itself does not really share (or it would insure everyone) is the same kind of theological nuttiness that led to the Goldwater debacle. In the name of attacking socialism, what Republicans are really doing is affronting the empiricism and the pragmatism, not to mention the decency, of the American people. In one of the later Pacific theater island invasions (Iwo Jima?--they were almost all horrible), some soldiers finally got reinforcements and were so weak they could barely move, got onto a Navy ship, were being cleaned up, and a white barber refused to cut the hair of a black soldier.
The commanding officer came down and ordered him to cut any damn soldier's hair. Which he then did.
Lots of coverage of the discrepancy of fighting for one's country and being dissed by that country's laws and many of their countrymen.
BTW, Inouye's description of his final attack against Germans, when he received many wounds and essentially went berserk, just charging and firing his Tommy gun, with little regard to his life--heavy.
His final attack because of his many serious wounds, arm nearly severed and spurting blood as he charge ahead.... And it being near the end of the war, so was not healed enough to get back into the action.

Childress has been described as the man who groomed Donovan McNabb, but the truth is all he did while being a go-pher coach with Philly was adjust McNabbs jock strap. I just don't think Democrats are the same all across the country. They seem to run the gamut on many social issues.
madamab
For sure.
Part of the reason many of us boil with anger. We elect candidates that vote our way every time (exception = Gordon Smith). We march, call, donate, nothing seems to matter. Our primary is in May and I'm already being told the primary season is over. Pretty fucking frustrating to not feel included in this country's process.

Character assassination and ad hominem attacks are the wingnuts have.
Not only that, it's all 100% projection. All the things they are screaming about are what they do themselves all the time.
They've got rich folks like Richard Mellon Scaife to finance a Right-Wing Noise machine, so naturally Soros must be doing the same thing on the left. They know it's a lie, but I think what's also going on in their heads is a lack comprehension that there are actually people out there who have a moral compass. They think everyone is just as bad as they are. Indeed, that's a big rationale for pulling shit in the first place- "I do awful things, like lie and cheat, but everyone does it, so it's OK".
The excuses made by beltway journalists and pundits for why Scooter Libby shouldn't be jailed followed that same sort of reasoning- Libby's actions, while unacceptable for everyone else, were "normal" Washington insider behavior and therefore didn't warrant punishment.

True, but prejudices have to battle each other in the ballot box (or caucus meeting).

the San franscisco 49ers spawned the stupid "west coast offense". people copied it because the 9ers were succesful. the 9ers were succesful because they had jerry rice and some QBs who could get the ball to him without turning it over.
that is all.

And Dean Smith used "Four Corners" because he always had a bunch of really slow white guys who couldn't dribble...
Halfdan
Actually, Phil Ford, the master of Dean's "four-corners" was as black as coal and a great ball-handler.
Smith used that tactic simply to shorten games, even when he had superior talent, and was heavily criticized for doing it.

Inouye was id'd as an American of Japanese descent throughout the series. They weren't rounded up in Hawaii, as they were on the Mainland, iirc, so he could join earlier than many put into the camps.
The stories about the all-Japanese-American unit were scary. Initially, they were given little fighting role, then they put in the front lines, with little battle experience, bcz the commander didn't want to waste any more white lives on a difficult objective (Germans had the high ground, big time).
Then, when they fought ferociously and achieved their objective, they were sent back repeatedly without rest. It was awful. I cried when one of their lieutenants was killed; he'd been so strong and valiant.
God, war is terrible.
This series makes me furious at BushBoy the Nonthinker.

This in a nut shell is why I never got into conservative talk radio and TV. They're ALWAYS mad at somebody. And it's the EXACT SAME THING EVERYDAY. The truly sad part is they never switch topics and give their audience any relief. No talk about food or the World Series or old time radio. It's hate and fear 24/7.
