I posted this earlier today but what the hell.
An email I received:
"SOCIAL SECURITY CHANGES
It does not matter if you personally like or dislike Bush. You need to sign this petition and flood his e-mail box with e-mails that tell him that, even if the House passes this bill, he needs to veto it. It is already impossible to live on Social Security alone. If the government gives benefits to 'illegal' aliens who have never contributed, where does that leave those of us who have paid into Social Security all our working lives? As stated below, the Senate voted this week to allow 'illegal' aliens access to Social Security benefits. Attached is an opportunity to sign a petition that requires citizenship for eligibility to that social service.
Instructions are below. If you don't forward the petition and just stop it, we will lose all these names. If you do not want to sign it, please just forward it to everyone you know.
Thank you!"
I e-mailed back and said "You've sent this to the wrong person. I am not one of the 'hatin' on immigrants'
crowd. Sorry!"
Instead of bitching about this, maybe these people should bitch about illegal wars that costs billions of dollars and thousands of lives...or billions of our tax dollars being used to bail out corporations.

Portland, Oregon: Sanctuary!
Activists from several peace groups will go before the Portland City Council today seeking support for making Portland a sanctuary for military resisters -- service members who have gone AWOL to protest the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
They hope the City Council will instruct police officers to ignore federal arrest warrants if they make a traffic stop of a soldier absent without leave.
The activists say such a stance is backed by the city's formal opposition to the Iraq war. And, they say, it's in line with the city's withdrawal from the federal Joint Terrorism Task Force as well as its policy prohibiting Portland officers from assisting U.S. immigration agents unless they need emergency backup. http://www.oregonlive.com/

Chairman Mullally's testimony.
(Seriously, my friends. The stock is selling for 2.80 now. I anticipate it topping off somewhere around twenty dollars within three years.
That is a bunch of positive change. It is really unfair to throw Ford in with GM and Chrysler. Ford anticipated the changes better and has a much better reputation for both quality and innovation.
t used to be that we operated regionally – European cars for Europe. Asian cars for Asia.
American cars for the U.S. market. Now we are leveraging our global assets, innovation, technology, and scale to deliver world class products for every market.
It used to be that our goal was simply to compete. Now we are absolutely committed to exceeding our customers' expectations for quality, fuel-efficiency, safety and affordability.
This is the Ford story. We are more balanced. We are more efficient. We are more global. And we are focused. In short, we are on the right path to becoming a profitable, growing company.
Ford's cars from Europe, the KA and the FIESTA are coming in the next year or so. And my European friends assure me that they are wonderful and highly regarded.
Sigh... If not for my uncuteness and my complete inability to understand the humor in Woody Allen films, I might have been a contender for ex-wife number 12.

Just draft a reasonable plan and hold them accountable. Focus on green business model. And give them the mother fucking cash. I say this as an unemployed woman just came to my front door to deliver the Yellow Book.
Broke my heart. My ex-husband did that a couple of years ago, too, to make cash in between jobs. He will do anything to make money, because he's desperate. He collected signatures for the medical marijuana petition here. He got $ 4/signature.

Too bad Kulongoski didn't have a US auto manufacturer he could go to:
SHENZHEN, China -- In this far corner of China's manufacturing heartland, Gov. Ted Kulongoski's dream of making Oregon home to America's green car movement is about to roll off the assembly lines.
At BYD Auto Co., China's fast-growing automotive star, a plug-in electric hybrid sedan is just weeks from meeting millions of Chinese consumers. The F3DM, which runs up to 80 miles on a single charge and packs a 7-gallon tank, will probably launch in the United States by 2010.
Kulongoski, who clinched a deal last week to bring Nissan's pure-electric cars to Oregon, is vying for BYD's bid for a North American pilot site. On Friday, he met with BYD President and Chairman Wang Chuanfu at the company's mammoth headquarters nearly two hours from China's booming industrial zone. http://www.oregonlive.com/

The Houston Chron has an article today about how somebody's lawsuit regarding Obama's birth certificate is being considered by the Supremes.
Technically, they are only considering whether or not to grant them a hearing. Many cases request review, only a handful (1%) actually get a review. Most die in Friday conferences such as this case will receive tomorrow. This one will likely die tomorrow and is only getting news because Thomas requested it be considered rather than the Chief.

At a gala dinner hosted by the American Spectator on Wednesday, Supreme Court Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. cracked wise at Vice President-elect Joe Biden's expense, raising the Delaware senator's past brushes with academic dishonesty, to the delight of his conservative audience.
Recalling an incident in which an article he submitted to the Spectator was rejected for publication, Alito began by joking that his unpublished piece had detailed how he would vote on the most controversial issues facing the Supreme Court.
Then — in the process of suggesting things had turned out well for him despite this rejection — Alito trained his sights on Barack Obama’s running mate. "To coin a phrase, in the spirit of the vice president-elect," Alito began, "you can't always get what you want, but you get what you need." Alito paused before continuing: "Did somebody say that before?"

One of the problems right now is that people perceive the union as dragging the industry down in the name of preserving "Cadillac" benefits, when most people's benefits are K-car (or non-existent).

Vicki, Who ♥ Al Gore : In Michigan alone, a quarter million people work in the auto industry, and the annual wages paid to Michiganders in the auto industry is $ 15.75 BILLION. There are over 130,600 people who work in parts; which is to say that the bail out affects many more people than just those who are employed by the Detroit Three.
Here's the problem - this failure has already happened. The only thing to do now is to outright BUY GM, nationalizing the company, putting a competent steward in charge, and try to privatize it again later.

Damn, a win:
The Natural Resources Defense Council, one of the nation’s most powerful environmental groups, has managed to persuade Bank of America, one of the nation’s leading financial institutions, to take a measured stand against certain surface mining practices.
From an announcement released yesterday by the bank:
Bank of America is particularly concerned about surface mining conducted through mountain top removal in locations such as central Appalachia. We therefore will phase out financing of companies whose predominant method of extracting coal is through mountain top removal. While we acknowledge that surface mining is economically efficient and creates jobs, it can be conducted in a way that minimizes environmental impacts in certain geographies.
At the N.R.D.C.’s Switchboard blog, Rob Perks, director of the organization’s Center for Advocacy Campaigns in Washington, said the group managed to persuade Bank of America executives to visit several mountaintop mine sites in Appalachia — including Kayford Mountain, which has been laid low by mountaintop mining methods.
Obama's Economic Stimulus Package to Hinge on Energy-Saving Goals
The Obama administration is crafing a plan that ties economic stimulus moves to energy savings, the New York Times reported today. Wrote the Times: "The details and cost of the so-called green-jobs program are still unclear, but a senior Obama aide, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss a work in progress, said it would probably include the weatherizing of hundreds of thousands of homes, the installation of smart meters to monitor and reduce home energy use, and billions of dollars in grants to state and local governments for mass transit and infrastructure projects."
The Obama advisor indicated that the incoming president was unwilling to wait for a climate change bill to clear Congress before moving to new energy and infrastructure spending proposals, the Times reported. Wrote the newspaper: "House and Senate supporters of a climate bill said they would continue working on legislative language but did not expect quick action on a cap-and-trade law because of the economic emergency."
And they need a plan. A SMART plan. A green plan. An innovative plan. And they need to be held accountable to that plan. With oversight and a reasonable, attainable, innovative plan, they will be successful.

It's strange -- but it's not surprising. Everyone is competing for resources. The union's taken good care of its people by preserving those bennies, but instead of asking for the same thing, people without feel resentment, which is just the way mgmt likes it.
This reminds me of a friend here who was involved in a court case on a rent stabilized apartment. The case made the paper and the tenants couldn't understand why they weren't getting support from the public. I told my friend, "Look, NO ONE feels sorry for you. You have a cheap apartment in Manhattan. Rich people don't believe rent stablization shoudl exist. Poor people pay as little as you, but for much shittier digs. After that, their profitability dropped substantially, but they were hiring business school grads at an alarming rate, all of whom were trying to build a better mousetrap, and none of whom were working as a team. In "Dune" (THE MOVIE), the Fremen (rebel fighters) are taught to attack using a device called a "weirding module" that translates vocal utterances into destructive bolts.
Paul, the lead character, notes that his Fremen name, "Muad'Dib" has become a "killing word" after an accidental utterance cuts through a boulder.

You need one parent who is a US Citizen to be a US citizen. If a child of American citizens is born abroad, he or she is technically considered a natural born citizen, and can therefore hold Presidential office.
Section 1 of Article 2 of the U.S. Constitution states that a President must:
be a natural born citizen of the united States; be at least 35 years old; have lived in the U.S. for at least 14 years. In addition, the 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution states that a President may not serve more than 2 terms of 4 years each, even if they have only served as President for 2 or more years of one of those terms.
McCain was born in Panama, for example, but his parents were citizens. So he was qualified to run.

Constitution does not define "natural born citizen." In the absence of definition, the definition is left to federal law. This is Con Law 101.
Federal law outlines many ways to be a citizen from birth (i.e., a "natural born" citizen). Being born on US soil is not the sole requirement. Aside from the fact Hawaii is "U.S. soil."

Now, that number is going to change between now and the end of the recount - but we're confident that when all the votes have been counted, Al Franken will be the next Senator from Minnesota.
But ensuring that every vote is counted will require constant vigilance and a tough stance from our campaign. Already, we've seen ballots going missing, absentee votes improperly rejected, and the Coleman campaign attempting to game the system by challenging hundreds of extra ballots (which, by the way, is the reason some published reports falsely suggest Coleman is leading by several hundred votes).
We won't let anyone disenfranchise Minnesota voters. That's why we have Franken observers at every recount table. That's why we've kept our campaign headquarters running at full power around the clock. That's why we've built a team of recount experts ready to defend voters' rights at every turn.
No, no. Obama just ignores it completely, and then one day plops down the birth certificate saying that, yep, he was born alright, and the wingnuts look like even bigger fools for causing all the to-do.

He already has. They're still checking the kerning.
They've also been kicked out of several courts by now. Hasn't stopped 'em yet.

"Martial" law by definition can't be declared by someone not in the military.

Just thinking outloud here: One telling is that Obama's mother wanted him to be born in the States, but for some reason was delayed in returning. So, let's say that Obama really was born in Kenya. Even his detractors say that they returned to the States within days of his birth. So, possibly someone, certainly not Obama, fudged the date to give his mother a break.
Is that really worth creating the chaos and turmoil that would ensue if the SCOTUS decided that Obama couldn't serve?
I think the whole purpose of the requirement was to avoid having a furriner elected President. Obama is an American and so was his mother, even if he was born on foreign soil.
What if your American parents were on a vacation and you decided to be born prematurely in France before the three of you returned home to the US--would that preclude you from ever being elected President?

BTW, Snow is absolutely right about who controls the military.
The Commander-in-Chief commands nothing that is not given to him to command by the Congress.
As Snow points out, all commissions and promotions of officers are approved of by the Congress, and don't happen without the Congress' leave.

and yet, it sort of haz been. looking at the list of all the shit bush has gotten away with, it's hard for me to accept that we're, in truth and not just in name, a "constitutional democracy." i know we're not in full on nazi mode here, but for too many, their constitutional rights have been taken away. start with gitmo, and all the way thru FISA, and it's actually a long list of us who haven't enjoyed full constitutional rights for a while now.

A friggin' ELECTION was held during the Civil War, for the love of Yoda.
Which makes holding elections during WWII seem like child's play. It's just insane to think any crisis now is worse than shit we've experienced...

I went to high school with Barack Obama's mother -- a couple years behind her. I remember some of the girls talking about her marriage and baby -- I kinda think they would have mentioned it if she had the kid in Kenya -- and can you imagine this 18 year old girl rushing off to Kenya while very pregnant to give birth in 1961?
Of course, he has a Hawaiian birth certificate but that doesn't seem to be stopping the idiots.

The Auto industry wants to blame the workers, particularly GM. The reason GM needs a bailout is because of some very bad management decisions, like the plug-in car, the Chevy Volt.
The only people that will be interested in the Chevy Volt will be Hollywood celebrities, as that car won't be pratical for anyone else.
If you heard the bailout talk in congress, please note that FORD's CEO said that company may not need a bailout at all, just wanted the loan on standby, just in case they needed it. Note the Ford invested in the hybird engine.
GM still hasn't gotten problems worked out of the Chevy Volt, and doesn't matter anyway because there is no real market for that stupid car. Plus the really awful thing is that consumers TOLD GM's CEO Rick Wagoner that they wanted something else other than the plug-in car, in which Wagoner responded, that the Chevy Volt was all they would get, not caring what consumer wanted. CEO Rick Wagoner is saying he needs $ 6 Billion right now just to get to January of 2009.
CEO Rick Wagoner ran GM into the ground, with heavy market of the Hummer and stupid plug-in Chevy Volt. So now Rick Wagoner and GM's boardmembers want to blame all of Chevy's problems on it's labor union workers. It's not the workers fault, it's the management's fault - it's already been said, the average worker makes $23 an hour.
The bailout problem really is mostly GM's problem, and it goes right to CEO Wagoner and boardmembers of GM. Wana-bet that Mr. Wagoner is back in less the two-years - asking for another bailout?
