Gravatarwhat? fireman make real money!!!!!

GravatarHe apparently has a difficult time understanding that nowadays, a veteran fireman or a veteran cop, married to a veteran schoolteacher, will make well over $100,000.

...and if so, they can afford to pay their goddamn taxes.

Gravatarlarry knows this. he's just lying.

lying larry bad.

And you can make a fortune selling on ebay, too.

GravatarWell, I am sure that Larry will correct this mistake as soon as he finishes gnawing on the harvested sweet meats from WF Buckley's corpse.

GravatarNobody ever said that you had to be smart in order to blog. I don't know what The Corner's excuse is...

GravatarAtrios,

You don't expect Kudlow to worry about details, do you? S'insane that I get capped at 90,000.

GravatarBlow. Lots of blow.

GravatarDoink!
.

GravatarKudlow is a dolt. FICA always has affected the middle class. They're used to it. What Obama wants by uncapping it, is to get the heavy income people used to it.

GravatarA principal?

Don't even get me started on what I think of education administrators' salaries and such.

Hmmm. Out of touch?

GravatarI'm getting a job as a schoolteacher and I'll fight fires by night. I'll be the wealthiest firefighting schoolteacher ever!

Yeaaaaahhhhh!

GravatarWTF is going on with all of this "champion the rich" horseshit? They don't need champions. They're rich.

GravatarShould've just had Larry Kudlow and K-Lo moderate the debate last week.

GravatarLarry K-Lo.

GravatarI don't think so. What the fuck do I know.

Gravatarthinly veiled:
good plan, and you can protect dividend-tax paying mid-income folks by capping the 15% rate at the first 5k or 10k in dividend income, if need be.
10K would still represent an underlying stock valuation of at least 200-250k.

GravatarWay to frame the debate, Larry!

You managed to take the idea that Obama wants the wealthy to pay more taxes and turn it into OBAMA HATES TEACHERS AND FIREFIGHTERS AND PEOPLE JUST LIKE YOU WHO WORK HARD FOR a LIVING.

I've met principals so young that the couldn't have ever had much teaching experience. Principles in general are highly unlikely to be teaching "veterans".

And at exactly the same time, Taylor Marsh/Correntewire/TalkLeft frame exactly the same policy as "privatizing social security".

That is absolutely stunning--how do we get this guy on Olbermann?

GravatarAt the risk of being labeled a heretic or some kind of nut...

Folks, I'm sorry, but there is no free lunch. You can't demand to maintain or improve services and then refuse to pay. The budget is in MASSIVE deficit! It is silly to sit around and talk about whether the folks making $200,000 should pay FICA on 100% of their income, when the folks making less than $97,000 already pay taxes on 100% of their income. Where's the fairness in that?

The reality is stark, the National debt is such that every man, woman and child in the U.S. already owes over $8,000 just to pull even. And we are burning money at a fantastic rate with 2 wars and no end in sight - if you want to rebuild the military and the aging infrastructure, invest in education, or do any one of the numerous things that folks keep saying they want it's going to take increased revenue.

If you want universal health care, or to preserve medicare and Social Security, it's going to take both more revenue and some serious reform.

Right now, to help ease the credit crunch caused by the mortgage problems, the Fed is dumping money into the economy - they are just printing it, not adding value. That is the seed for the inflation of the future. The dollar is dropping like a rock and the price of needed foreign commodities, like oil, are heading North like a rocket.

The truth is, we've got to pay more taxes, or leave a massive economy crippling debt to our children and grandchildren. The question is, what is the fairest way to assess them? Not the way that will cost me the least... but the fairest way. We are going to have to change the way we do business - pure and simple. Like any other budget out of balance, we've got to cut outgo and increase income. All the rest is fuzzy math.

Gravatar"a cop can make 54 million dollars"-Larry Kudlow

GravatarKudlow the non sequitor business analysis

He also said the CRA was responsible for the current mortgage problems

He is a total fucking asshole with no redeeming qualities. He his hired to speak garbage and make no sense whatsoever and to say --who could have predicted at appropriate times.

GravatarLike those cops in Serpico?

GravatarI've been edu-blogging for 6 years. I've occasionally run across news items detailing some teacher paychecks exceeding $100k. They're always big cities and the teachers work lots of extra duties and OT.

One other point-- On what planet is a 6.2% marginal rate "very high"?

GravatarRemember:

Lowering taxes increases revenue!

Eat all you want and still lose weight!

GravatarIncidentally, St. Sabina's pastor (Fr. Michael Plfeger) here in Chicago has butted heads with the conservatives in the Catholic hierarchy on more than one occasion. He certainly did a job on the Fox reporter you guys have linked to.

Gutsy guy.

GravatarThat is absolutely stunning--how do we get this guy on Olbermann?
editoress | 04.19.08 - 6:00 pm

His name is Fr. Mike Pflegler, a Chicago area Catholic Priest active in the African American community. The guy interviewing him is a producer from the "Factor". There's a longer version of that interview up on Foxnews.

GravatarOK. Fr. Michael Pfleger, I think that's the correct spelling. I almost got it right the first time.

GravatarNo wonder NRO doesn't allow comments. Just hafta ridicule Kudlow here, I guess. Bit surprised atrios left out that in the same post he committed the noted howler, Kudlow said this about Obama: "Your guy has a very poor grasp of basic economic principles."

Er, as basic as SocSec being individual tax, Larry?

GravatarThis year the FICA cap is 102K I believe. Uncapping it would have no effect on this lucky couple.

GravatarPlainbrown1,

9.4 trillion divided by 304 million equals about $31,000 in National Debt for every man/woman/child in the US, not a "measly" $8K. So for a family of four, its not $32K (cost of an extra car), but $124K. Cost of (what used to be) a mortgage.

In 2006 the yearly interest payment was 460 billion (and that's based upon a historically low weighted average of about 4.1% on Treasury securities). $1500 per head, about $6000 per typical family - that's yearly interest currently being paid.

GravatarInterest was $406M, not 460M. Grrr.

Why am I blogging? I should be putting in a garden for the coming economic crash.

GravatarTaxable maximum for 2008 is $102K. So uncapping would affect neither.

GravatarRemoving the cap is a very bad idea. Once you do it you remove one of the central SS concepts. That being that it is insurance. All pay the same, that is a linchpin of traditional insurance. Once the wealthy pay more they will have another arrow in their quiver to kill it.

Here is what needs to be done rhetorically. China has loaned the US government trillion dollars. American wage earners have loaned the US government $1.6 trillion via SS withholdings. Now some say we should not pay those wage earners back with SS payments.. They never say we shouldn't pay China back. Why is that?

GravatarCoke can cause one to mix up the numbers.

God Speed Larry!

GravatarObama has also said he will likely offer a 'window' to such people.

Kudlow lies, whatever. Right winger lies, dog bites man, news at 11.

GravatarDon't you think it's just adorable how the fireman is married to a schoolteacher. They probably have two kids who play with Wally and the Beav after little league practice as well.

Apparently, only sub-par piece-o-shit public servants make less than $200k a year. So pretty much all but a half dozen or so in my state are worthless losers.

Interesting.

GravatarAs an elementary school teacher, I sure would like to work in Larry Kudlow's world. Not sure where he's getting those numbers, but from my perspective working for a district that pays very well (as far as teachers go) I just find this to be total nonsense.

Perhaps Kudlow's kids go to school at the same one as Charles Gibson's?

GravatarThe "self employment" tax is farking killing me. Let's make it progressive.

Gravatar2005-2006 Census Bureau, median household income, $48,023

No state has a higher median than $67,000.

What is this guy talking about? Could there be veteran folks in high cost markets making that money - sure. Is it anywhere near "normal"

no.

Who's out of touch?

GravatarCensus Link

http://www.census.gov/hhes/www/i.../ statemhi2.html

GravatarThe only districts I know of where "veteran schoolteachers" make $100,000 plus, are on the Pennsylvania Main Line.

GravatarHow the hell does 7.65% rate as a "very high" marginal tax rate?

GravatarThis is Larry Kud-blow, author of 'The Bush Boom' (I'm not joking).

The price of coke must be going up; Larry's propagandizing even more enthusiastically than usual for that corporatist dollar. He knows he's lying; he's paid to push a sales pitch, regardless of the facts.

The point isn't to deceive critical thinkers and those who know economic facts -- they know he's full of shit. He's a jester prancing around to give an excuse to those mouth-breathers who don't want to think at all when it comes to economics.

GravatarSorry, but Larry is correct. Uncapping the FICA tax is a huge tax increase, not only to the individuals, but to employers because both must pay one half of the total tax. For those who are self-employed, paying 3/4 of the total tax rate all the way to the last dollar earned is a bigger tax increase. BO will scare the hell out of so many people that are independent contractors. The example of the veteran firefighter or school teacher simply clouds the example.
http:// www.democraticunderground...ess=132x4795051

GravatarIt's the Bush tax cut all over again.

Republican flacks create very specific people who will benefit / suffer from the new policy.

This facade hides the monstrous benefits to the rich, or in this case the obscene regressive nature of the payroll tax cap of $98,000.

Never, ever, ever vote for these plutocratic liars.

GravatarObama talks shit sometimes:

"Well, you know, I haven't given a firm number. Here's my belief, that we can't go back to some of the, you know, confiscatory rates that existed in the past that distorted sound economics. And I certainly would not go above what existed under Bill Clinton, which was 28 percent. I would—and my guess would be it would be significantly lower than that. I think that we can have a capital gains rate that is higher than 15 percent. If it—and if it, you know—when I talk to people like Warren Buffett or others and I ask them, you know, what's—how much of a difference is it going to be if it's 20 or 25 percent, they say, look, if it's within that range, then it's not going to distort, I think, economic decision making."

snip

"The capital gains rate during the Clinton administration fell from 28 percent at the beginning to 20 percent with the signing of the Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997 in August of that year."
http://www.usnews.com/blogs/capi...ns- blunder.html

GravatarYou're missing the point of Kudlow's mistake. Even if you don't like Obama's proposal, it is nonetheless true that right now a veteran firefighter and teacher couple where each person makes $100K individually will have the entirety of their joint income of $200K subject to the FICA tax. Kudlow's comment implies that this is not the case, i.e., he makes it sound like the FICA cap is a cap on the joint income of couples, which is false.

GravatarThis is the same guy who has been saying for months that ours is the Cinderella economy, the greatest story never told.

I don't know nuthin about economics but I always thought a good talking point on SS was to uncap it, then repeal the '83 law that saved it and change the rates to what it costs to run the program. They raised them some 40% so we could all contribute to our own retirement and then spent the money.

That might be a real tax break for the middle and lower economic classes.

GravatarKudlow is such a dumbass.

In addition, most governments employers(federal, state or local) do not pay FICA. They will pay medicare however.

GravatarNot to rain on the predictable liberal parade (and yes, Kudlow is an idiot), but the major reason high-earners' FICA taxes are capped is because their benefits are capped. If you uncap the tax without uncapping the benefit (and there's obviously no real reason to uncap the benefit for rich guys, though I don't know if the maximum benefit is in fact fairly proportional), then you're turning an actual pension system into a soak-the-rich income-surtax scheme. It's a significant distinction, because as many suggested during the hoo-rah over the privatization proposal, if there's no proportionality between input and benefit, you lose its constituency and it becomes a welfare scheme. Perhaps the distinction ought to be obsolete these days, but ignoring it just makes one look clueless or deceptive (candidates included). "Rich" folks pay most of the collected income tax already, BTW, even if the rate differences between capital and labor income are more than a ridiculous.

GravatarI'm a teacher who makes over $100,000. I pay $0 to FICA because I am in a public pension which exempts me from social security payments and payouts.

Learn something about our financial system, Kudlow, then go on teevee and comment about it.
