He went up 9 and Clinton went down 1 so a net 10.

I'm not sure though so I'm leaving the post alone.

GravatarEarlier this afternoon, Oregon AFSCME voted to endorse Barack Obama for President. Previously, the national AFSCME organization had endorsed Hillary Clinton.

Oregon AFSCME becomes the only state organization in the country - other than Illinois AFSCME, in Obama's home state - to break ranks with the national.

GravatarAccording to Sollie, more than 15 years ago the state of Mississippi entered into an agreed order and assigned Jackson attorney Ron Welch to be the overseer of facilities that hold state inmates — be it a county jail or state penitentiary.

“In order for a county jail to hold or house state inmates, it has to be certified,” he said. “Ron Welch has to make a site visit, and he drafts up an order — that is signed by him, a representative from the county and a representative from the attorney general’s office — that states that he has done his inspection and it is approved for that facility to hold state prisoners.”
---------

Welch is a prisoner rights attorney who ripped Mississppi such a major new asshole over its prisons and jails that the federal judge put him in charge of overseeing the system. No prisoner may be housed somewhere without a piece of paper from Welch saying it's ok.

He put them in a completely submissive state.

The president will continue to claim the country is in grave danger over this issue, but it is not. The real danger is for Mr. Bush. A good law — like the House bill — would allow Americans to finally see the breathtaking extent of his lawless behavior.

GravatarDetroit is a good team but they are too passive. That is their problem as far as I can see. They have the most highly skilled players in the league but only if the other team does not touch their forwards. And their D-men are of the same variety with the exception of Chellios. Lidstrom and Kronwall are great skaters and passers. The new guy seems to bring a little toughness but they need someone back there to make forwards fear. They do not have that. They need forwards big and strong enough to take on the Chris Prongers of the league - they do not have them at this time. (Did you see that goon was suspended for eight games again?)

That is why I am amazed that they might not want to bring up my son's friend from MSU. Justin is just EXACTLY what they need. 6'2" 220 lbs and he is fast and LOVES to kick your ass when he is playing. And he is skilled with the puck and his shot is heavy. (Gave Youngest DWD a hell of a bruise THROUGH his flak jacket at practice. Something that is supposed to be impossible)

We were referring to Montrealais/ Quebecois "right wingers" - although still slightly retarded, they're probably what Americans would call "centrists," being kind of environmmentalists, not rabidly pro-war, etc. compared to U.S. righttards.   Mostly they're kind of  economic conservatives (which the coming depression ought to cure them of!)

When Hank (my Lab) was a puppy she gnawed a new hole in my antique chairleg, while I was in the room. It took a nanosecond. She also gnawed a hole in the wall between two rooms and rearranged most of the round knobs in my chest of drawers to other shapes. Then she ate a soap dish.

Get some of that hard, yet flexible, plastic tubing they sell at Home Depot-type stores. Cheaper and comes in all different widths.

People with rabbits (who should be kept indoors) use it to "rabbit-proof" the house.

Yeah, it really is. My family went to his high school graduation open house and they came to ours. The boys both played on teams with him for many years. bill, as a parent of a great dane puppy, it is my duty to remind you that the potty training stage can take 6 months.

(That was (in our case) actually 2.5 weeks of learning where to go, followed by 4.5 months of dealing with Miss Very Dominant Queen Puppy Who Did Not Think The Silly Humans Were Allowed To Decide Such Things)

Goldens, admittedly, are not likely to have that dominant streak.

Proving the inherent superiority of kittehs, who are born potty trained.

GravatarI'm reflecting on my desire to get a puppy. I miss Hanna dearly,
but.........yeesh. That part was thirteen years ago. I had forgotten.

My latest, acquired by showing up collarless in my yard and refusing to leave, I took to be a half-grown Lab based on coloring (yellow), coat (short), general shape, ears, size of paws, time it took to get the concept of "housetraining" across to him, etc.

The fact that he has not grown either up or out since arriving (Thanksgiving), has an odd stiff-legged gaite when excited, digs like a motherfucker, and appears not to have three brain cells to rub together, causes me to reconsider. Some sort of terrier maybe, at least high percentage?

Anyway, puppies of any age are fun but like babies, exhausting. Maybe try for one around a year old? Still lively, trainable, able to bond with you, but past the worst of the chewey stage.

GravatarMy lab/border collie was trained in a couple of days. But I'm not sure I'll get another dog who is smarter than i am. The dumb ones might be easier to live with.

That's good to hear, but "Huet" is a Vouvray as far as I'm concerned.  It's been "Ole the Goalie" hereabouts for as long as I can remember.

Gravatarthe Iowa caucus negates the delegates won in Hillary's Ohio victory.

Gravatarmomentarily breaking my vow of silence to help alegre:

Prominent Kos Poster Goes "On Strike" against Hillary Hate

This is an open letter to the progressive blogosphere...

I’ve been posting at DailyKos for nearly 4 years now and started writing diaries in support of Hillary Clinton back in June of last year. Over the past few months I’ve noticed that things have become progressively more abusive toward my candidate and her supporters.

I’ve put up with the abuse and anger because I’ve always believed in what our on-line community has tried to accomplish in this world. No more. DailyKos is not the site it once was thanks to the abusive nature of certain members of our community.

I’ve decided to go on "strike" and will refrain from posting here as long as the administrators allow the more disruptive members of our community to trash Hillary Clinton and distort her record without any fear of consequence or retribution. I will not be posting at DailyKos effective immediately. I will not help drive up traffic or page-hits as long as my candidate – a good and fine DEMOCRAT - is attacked in such a horrid and sexist manner not only by other diarists, but by several of those posting to the front page.

if i personally find it too much to bear, that's my problem, but apparantly many other progressive blog posters feel the same way that i do, so i wanted to publicly state my support of alegre in her movement to restore civility among democrats. alegre's manifesto has already reached the pages of the NYT

i appreciate that hillary's hardball campaign tactics are painful to many sensitive souls. to use this as an excuse to mimic the worst right wing rhetoric against the clintons is utterly out of scale and doing every bit as much to tear the democratic party apart as anything that hillary could have ever said. i note, however, that there seems to be considerably less of it on eschaton in the last few days.

something is seriously wrong with the progressive blog-o-sphere if suggestions that posters criticise a fellow democrat in a civil tone, rather than with venom, are shouted down angrily. 'defending' barack obama by sounding like rush limbaugh dishonors his promise to rise above the bitter partisan rhetoric of the past, transcend party divisions, and have a transformational effect on american politics.

.

GravatarAnd the TX and MS wins are looking more bogus every day

Texas was always bogus.

My 3 cats agree. I can't tell you the derisive looks they would give me as I pulled out the mop after Bianca had one of her little "I will pee on the floor RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU to show you I AM QUEEN,DAMMIT" fits.

"We never gave you such trouble", the cats would say, " this is the thanks we get? Hrmph."

GravatarGoldens, admittedly, are not likely to have that dominant streak.
Snugglebunny

I've never had a problem with potty training dogs. I usually work a command that I repeat ad nauseum each time they go. It works wonderfully if you ever go on the road. They hear the command and begin the Pavlovian squat. I also have 250 acres for them to run around on so the yard stays clean too. The problems come from the things they find in the woods. I have given many a dog bath.

Gravatar"OK, I'll play. Why is she doing this? I am asking this because the answers I come up with simply do not make sense."

the only way she can win is with the supers, and the only way she gets them is thru destroying obama.

if she tears him to shreds, and does the gop's work and gets mccain elected, she can run in 4 years.

i think a huge part of this is just ego and wanting to save face.

GravatarOooo, the NYTimes is slamming Little Boots on the economy too.

Mr. Bush’s denial of the economic truth underscores the need for Congress to push forward with solutions to the mortgage crisis — especially bankruptcy reform to help defaulting homeowners. Lawmakers also must prepare to execute, in case it is needed, a government rescue of people whose homes are now worth less than they borrowed to buy them.

Mr. Bush said he was optimistic because the economy’s “foundation is solid” as measured by employment, wages, productivity, exports and the federal deficit. He was wrong on every count. On some, he has been wrong for quite a while.

GravatarWell, they are.

You just show them the box and they go there. From the time they're itty bitty.

Not always, they have to have Mommy teaching and also be in a house where littleboxes are used. Forrest who sits on me as I write this, was picked up in the middle of the road in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night last August. Weighed less than a pound so probably around a month old, certainly not more than 2.

Was a bitch to litter-train and in fact is still not perfect at it. Won't share the big box with the other 2 so has to have a dishpan of his own. Any stray sheet of paper on the floor is liable to be annointed.

Around here people look at you funny if you admit that a pet lives indoors with you, unless it's a dustmop-type arm dog. Cats in particular live "at" but not in their owners' house. They get fed but that's about it. So Forrest never had much of a chance to do what you describe.

GravatarTacitus,

I still don't get it, sorry for being a hard-headed old Hollander here (I know a redundancy)

According to the articles I have read from supposedly neutral sources, Hillary cannot possibly win or EVEN pretend she is winning by the time of the convention. Pretending you are winning is a pretty powerful statement.

One can pretend they are winning by showing they have more votes, more delegates, have won more states, and have received more endorsements. By any of these four measures Barack Obama is winning.

The logical consequence of this is that Hillary is, therefore, losing. Further, because she is losing and there really is no way for her to make up the deficit by above-board means, the next logical step is that she has lost. If there were no super delegates, this race would be over.

I find it difficult to accept the answers that have been given for her presence in this race. If she is, indeed, in a bubble where her people are convincing her that she is the great savior of the nation and the other guy is the path to ruin and the only way she can save the country is by destroying him: she should get out more often because I do not believe that position is held universally.

If she is so egotistical that she believes it her RIGHT to now be president and will stomp on anyone who gets in her way no matter the cost, haven't we had enough of such behavior as of late? I know I have.

She needs to sit down with her people and look at the cold hard fact and the way that things are breaking across this country. Assess the damage she is doing versus the good that could be done and make a decision.

I think she would have made a great candidate and president. I think she should have not have allowed the people managing her campaign to enter the front door and she should have fired them six months ago when it became apparent they were full of shit and were going to cost her the election. But that was then and this is now.

(And yes, I am ready to be called a sexist again)

GravatarYou'd cry too if you had Ray Milland's head stuck next to yours.

There is that...

GravatarShe doesn't chew all the way through, but I may have to get a sleeve thing for it just in case.

GravatarBarack In The Day

Long before Obama ran for president, he was a state senator in Illinois. Here’s what he did.

Jones appointed Obama sponsor of virtually every high-profile piece of legislation, angering many rank-and-file state legislators who had more seniority than Obama and had spent years championing the bills.

“I took all the beatings and insults and endured all the racist comments over the years from nasty Republican committee chairmen,” state Sen. Rickey Herndon, the original sponsor of landmark legislation that dealt with racial profiling and videotaped confessions, complained to me at the time. It was yanked away by Jones and given to Obama. “Barack didn’t have to endure any of it,” Herndon said. “Yet, in the end, he got all the credit.”

i first heard the following mentioned on the msnbc documentary on barack

He was just 35 when in 1996 he won his first bid for political office. Even many of his staunchest supporters, such as Black, still resent the strong-arm tactics Obama employed to win his seat in the Illinois Legislature.

Obama hired fellow Harvard Law alum and election law expert Thomas Johnson to challenge the nominating petitions of four other candidates, including the popular incumbent, Alice Palmer, a liberal activist who had held the seat for several years, according to an April 2007 Chicago Tribune report.

Obama found enough flaws in the petition sheets—to appear on the ballot, candidates needed 757 signatures from registered voters living within the district—to knock off all the other Democratic contenders. He won the seat unopposed.

this article is full of all the odds and ends about barack that will, count on it, come out in the coming months, so you are getting a heads up reading it here first.

i think barack will win the primaries, the nomination, and the election, and i will support him all the way. but if you think what hillary is doing is "republican tactics", you are very much mistaken. republican campaign tactics are Distortion and Lying. you'll find out when we get to the general what dirty campaign tactics are really like...

Gravatar(And yes, I am ready to be called a sexist again)

Show me one candidate ever who did not believe it was his or her right to be President and that he or she could do it better than all others.

The simple fact is that it is unlikely at this point Obama will win the nomination before the convention. Insisting Hillary has no right to keep running under that circumstance is ridiculous. I cannot fathom his most ardent supporters would say that he should step aside were the positions reversed. I rather think the argument would be just as it is now - she is damaged goods and he is the truth and the light.

GravatarAround here people look at you funny if you admit that a pet lives indoors with you

Xan, one of my dreams, should I win the lottery, is to be able to fund a mobile spay unit, that could go to rural areas and provide that so desperately needed service for no cost. Other medical care for pets, too.

For many poor and isolated people, helping their pets is one of the best ways to help them.

your concern is duly noted.

GravatarZap,

I had read the review of Once and I really like that sort of music so I was anxiously looking forward to watching it. I was severely disappointed in the movie.

Again, this is just my opinion, but I found the music to be simply unlistenable. And if you do not like the music, then there really isn't much point to the movie. The two singer's voices are decent but the arrangements are overwrought and melodramatic and far too histrionic to be taken seriously. The music itself was basically the same song done twelve different different ways in the same key with the same chords and rhythms. BORING.

Just didn't like it, but that is me. YMMV

GravatarAnyone want to take care of my kids for a few months? I have decided that the only way I'm going to survive this election is by going into alcohol-induced hibernation.

i don't consider any of it sexist

it is still possible for hillary to win the popular vote. that is not a mathematical impossibility, and she has every right in the world to stay in until everybody has a chance to vote. if, when all the primary votes are counted, she is not winning, i have every expectation that she will gracefully withdraw. i am sure she would be under tremendous pressure from the party to do so, and i don't believe she would be stupid enough to push it any farther.

attributing evil motives and accusing her of trying to destroy the party are over the top, highly suppositious, and harmful. it is my practice to wait until people do bad things to condemn them, not to predict that they will do somthing bad and condemn them in advance for my prediction

.

Thatr's the curve where I spun out, and decided on Obama. "McCain's OK, I'm OK, but Barack sucks" was just the stupidest thing I've herard from a candidate since Gary "You wanna follow me? Go for it!" Hart.

GravatarInsisting Hillary has no right to keep running under that circumstance is ridiculous.

Her running a campaign that tries to make Obama unelectable, then claims he's unelectable, is equally ridiculous. Particularly the bit where it's justified because the GOP would dig it up anyway. That's bullshit. If the GOP digs up random shit to throw at you, you can slap it down with impunity. When the random shit is coming from within your own party, it's a different kind of attack.

It was clear she had to wrap this up early, because she's the establishment candidate, and the establishment can't win ugly.

The primary's like Iraq now: can't stay in, can't get out.

Gravatarit is my practice to wait until people do bad things to condemn them, not to predict that they will do somthing bad and condemn them in advance for my prediction

She's already done bad things.

She may be doing them for reasons she thinks are honorable, but that doesn't make it right.

Gravatar"Insisting Hillary has no right to keep running under that circumstance is ridiculous. I cannot fathom his most ardent supporters would say that he should step aside were the positions reversed."

jeffco: i don't think anyone gave a shit until she started spewing the rw shit and aiding and abetting mccain.

there is no hillary supporter that can say with *any* degree of honesty that had obama lost 11 in a row, and was so far behind that 'winning' was virtually impossible, and had obama got desperate and started spewing rw shit...there is no way he wouldn't have been long gone. hrc only gets a pass because her name is 'clinton'.

GravatarHillary may capture the vote and the likelihood of it being popular is less than half, but substantially more than a third.

Gravatarthe obama supporters here were calling for hillary to drop out of the race before march 4th, "because she has no chance of winning". people who call for the opponents of their candidate to drop out of the race rather strike me as people who are afraid that their candidate might lose.

once again, be positive, not negative, remember that we must all be united in the end if we are to beat the republican ugly machine, and may the best man win

Gravatarits mathematically possible, but highly unlikely.

The problem is that you can't really compare the "popular vote" since some states are caucus states.

Gravatarits mathematically possible, but highly unlikely.

I'm sure that it's mathematically possible for me to be killed by the flowers I just bought, too.

But, most sensible people know they're not gonna win the lottery, and they don't buy this week's Powerball.

GravatarThe simple fact is that it is unlikely at this point Obama will win the nomination before the convention. Insisting Hillary has no right to keep running under that circumstance is ridiculous. I cannot fathom his most ardent supporters would say that he should step aside were the positions reversed. I rather think the argument would be just as it is now - she is damaged goods and he is the truth and the light.
JeffCO |

If I said she does not have the RIGHT to continue her increasingly Quixotic Campaign, I am sorry I did not mean to say that. What I meant to say was that she should sit down with her people and look in a realistic manner at what their options are and make an assessment based on this information.

If they believe they can win, then I guess they should continue their fight. But if their plan is to win by destroying the other candidate or the party, that really isn't much of a plan, is it?

You see this is where the rubber meets the road, isn't it? I am merely asking for a realistic appraisal and you are concluding that I am demanding that she stop her campaign. The jump from A to B was yours, not mine. The jump was made, IMHO, because that is the only LOGICAL thing for her to do at this time.

I tire of the argument that as dirty and nasty as Hillary is getting it pales in comparison with the Republicans will do. I cannot believe a moral person is even comfortable uttering those words. If there is one thing I like about Obama better than Hillary (though I agree that their positions are so similar it is DIFFICULT to tell them apart) it is that he WANTS to speak the best of us, not the worst.

GravatarWell, I guess she has the "right" to continue running, but is it the right thing? No.

I don't happen to subscribe to the view that having these two Dems continue to compete is a bad thing for either or for the party. No real Dem will refrain from voting for Obama, and whatever support he is getting from others will only be strengthened by his facing down the demon Hillary. To me it's win win.

Gravatar I'm kind of pissed off about the money that will be spent.

Particularly because, of those $50 donations from ordinary people between now and the PA vote, $47.50 will go to the state's television affiliates.

Got to love that cash cow.

The problem is that they believe they can win by tearing down Obama to the extent that he becomes "unelectable" therefore persuading enough Super Delegates to jump to their side.

Gravataronce again, be positive, not negative, remember that we must all be united in the end if we are to beat the republican ugly machine, and may the best man win

Quite true. Now tell that to Mark Penn.

Clinton is now in a situation where the only way she gets the nomination is to destroy Obama. The actual voting no longer matters. The stuff that goes on between the votes does. That's unhealthy for democracy.

Her campaign basically has to end Obama's political career between now and June. It's looking for the 'dead boy or live girl' that will do it.

I don't need to explain how unhealthy that is.

GravatarIf being married to the president qualifies you to be president, then Robin Givens should be the heavyweight champion of the world.

Holy shit.

That's harsh. and funny

GravatarCan't game a New York primary - they're closed. Which is a shame really - for all these years I've been denied my chance to vote for Pat Buchanan, Alan Keyes, Duncan Hunter - basically, whoever was the most batshit guy they had in the race...

Tacitus Voltaire | Homepage | 03.16.08 - 12:27 am | #

She NOT going to campaign against mccain after she loses - she's already said that she thinks mccainus is qualified to be president, and there's this:

http://www.observer.com/2008/bil...tionship- mccain

"Today in Spartanburg, he (Bill) described them as "very close." And the other night in Myrtle Beach, he called them "good friends," and said "they like each other." The topic seems to be coming up relatively often, and unprompted (not to mention that it's different than the attitude McCain has taken towards Clinton)."

Gravatar
To me it's win win.

It's certainly drawing more attention to the Democratic side. The huge voter turnouts that they've been the primaries are a good thing.

With regards to worrying about Hillary making Obama "unelectable", that isn't exactly showing much confidence in your candidate.

Gravatarwhy would the repukes want to run against her as opposed to the democratic candidate

They're counting on Hillary-hatred to count for 2 to 5 points in critical states like Ohio and Florida.

By their calculus, Hillary-hatred is worth more than Negro fear.

GravatarThe problem is that they believe they can win by tearing down Obama to the extent that he becomes "unelectable" therefore persuading enough Super Delegates to jump to their side.

i vigorously disagree with the proposition that barack is a vulnerable and ineffective candidate to be "torn down" and made "unelectable". to say so is to not have sufficient faith in him.

Gravatar"If being married to the president qualifies you to be president, then Robin Givens should be the heavyweight champion of the world."

see, that's the sort of thing I think is very unfair. hrc is a person of great accomplishment, and certainly qualified to be potus.

on the other hand it IS very unfair that obama has run against both her and bill, who is not only an ex-president but the titular head of the democratic party.

no one seems to take that into account, and it's something that provides her with an enormous advantage in campaigning.

Gravatarwhy would the repukes want to run against her as opposed to the democratic candidate who doesn't play as hard?

I think you've answered your own question.

Gravatari appreciate that you and all the obama supporters are feeling pain from hillary's hardball campaign tactics.

Not pain, anger and disappointment, and pumping up McCain at the expense of Obama is not "hardball politics" its monumental stupidity.

GravatarShe NOT going to campaign against mccain after she loses - she's already said that she thinks mccainus is qualified to be president, and there's this:

they are all senators together. obama has worked together with mccain and other republican senators to pass legislation. obama even has his name together with chuck hagel on one bill:

Obama's energy initiatives scored pluses and minuses with environmentalists, who welcomed his sponsorship with John McCain (R-AZ) of a climate change bill to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by two-thirds by 2050, but were skeptical of his support for a bill promoting liquefied coal production.[78] Obama also introduced the "Iraq War De-Escalation Act of 2007", a bill to cap troop levels in Iraq, begin phased redeployment, and remove all combat brigades from Iraq before April 2008.[79]

Later in 2007, Obama sponsored with Kit Bond (R-MO) an amendment to the 2008 Defense Authorization Act adding safeguards for personality disorder military discharges, and calling for a review by the Government Accountability Office following reports that the procedure had been used inappropriately to reduce government costs.[80] He sponsored the "Iran Sanctions Enabling Act" supporting divestment of state pension funds from Iran's oil and gas industry,[81] and joined Chuck Hagel (R-NE) in introducing legislation to reduce risks of nuclear terrorism.[82] A provision from the Obama-Hagel bill was passed by Congress in December 2007 as an amendment to the State-Foreign Operations appropriations bill

That (3 month old constantly repeated) deal with Obama knocking another candidate out of a race by challenging bad signatures on petitions ? That's not even dirty, it's perfectly legitimate and doesn't come close to qualifying as 'Chicago-style' politics.

HRC lost me and she did it all herself, no way to blame that one on some surrogate. I defended her both publicly and in my own mind for low blows time after time, like the "of course he's not a Muslim as far as I know." The qualification thing just pissed me off beyond redemption.

pseudonymous in nc | 03.16.08 - 12:45 am | #

don't be silly. this is a competition for the most votes. hillary is actually suffering much more damage to her reputation, since both right wing and left wing commentators, including the ones here, are condemning her daily. so much so that i thought she was gone and done for before march 4th. yet she won in rhode island, ohio, and texas, and nobody suggests that her career is destroyed

the fact is that candidates are professional politicians, and they know very well that a lot of very ugly things can be said in a debate or race, and that then they will kiss and make up afterwards.

it's the supporters who are not used to political campaigns that think it is the end of the world. everybody should stop hyperventilating

.

GravatarOnce again, and I don't know why this is so hard to grasp.

there has to be some serious cognitive dissonance going on... criticism of a campign tactics always gets parsed as vitriol personally directed at HRC.

I hammered on the McCain is qualified but Obama isn't thing for a week, and 99% of the time the HRC supporters refused to even acknowledge the issue let alone try to justify it.

Gravatargood dog, now how would you ever, ever, ever, know that after "watching" him for such a short time

Thanks Dave, your concern is duly noted.

GravatarAn addendum.

Tacitus, you argue passionately and logically and your logic and facts lead you to the obvious conclusion then you leapfrog it in favor the erroneous one.

For the life of me I am missing this point.

Syllogistically:

Hillary Rodham Clinton cannot achieve the patina of looking like she is a winner. Barack Obama has already achieved this distinction by the virtue of the victories he has garnered. Since Barack Obama cannot lose by conventional methods and Hillary cannot win by conventional methods (and the unconventional methods will like destroy whatever chances we have in the fall) Hillary Rodham Clinton should therefore . . . .

Nice!

GravatarAs an Edwardian since '04 i was neutral after he dropped out, with a lean to HRC for reasons I suspect are similar to Hecate's: of two equally qualified candidates I prefer to vote for a woman.

That "I'm qualified and McCain's qualified but Obama? You gotta ask him...." did it for me too. That's over the line.

HRC lost me and she did it all herself, no way to blame that one on some surrogate. I defended her both publicly and in my own mind for low blows time after time, like the "of course he's not a Muslim as far as I know." The qualification thing just pissed me off beyond redemption.

Xan, I agree 100%. You encapsulated my position perfectly. To label us "Hillary Haters" is done simply because it's easier than addressing our concerns directly, and yelling "sexist or misogynist" at us is too transparent a ploy.

Gravatar
But at the same time he's getting a pass on a lot of things.

He'd be getting a pass regardless even if Hillary had dropped out by now.

Looking the other way when it comes McCain and making mountains out of molehills when it comes to Democratic candidates is a press specialty. It would matter if there were one left now.

EXACTLY the same here. I sent her little army of nasty people an e-mail, though never got a reply, after that remark. Obama bothers me a bit, I have to say--I find him a little patronizing every time he talks about my generation (Baby Boomers) but I can live with that.
But I do fear what this Wright tape will mean to many, many people. I've been reading some other blogs tonight where everyone who mentions the impact of the tape is immediately attacked as a Republican plant. GravatarTerry, he's getting there.  He's upset at the moment that Mlle's rehab does not encourage working out family issues, but he's going to have to deal with that.  She isn't going to be there much longer anyway.  He's not going to change their treatment philosophy any more than I was able to.  I showed up for family group today--was told to leave, not because of Mlle's request, but because the staff deems me 'toxic.'

The toxic fumes would kill you.

Gravatardon't be silly. this is a competition for the most votes.

I'm not being silly, I'm asking for a bit of honesty here. Step back and give me a plausible scenario in which Obama loses without being destroyed as a politician.

I'll put it more passive terms. How does Hillary Clinton win the nomination without Obama's career being destroyed?

Let's be honest enough to say that Clinton's chance of getting a majority of pledged delegates and a plurality of the popular vote is as negligible as it is.

So, how does she win? She has a Rizla-thin chance of winning by the ballot, and the alternative is to win by the (proverbial) bullet.

Gravatar
The toxic fumes would kill you.

LOL!

Gravatarkillfile - I don't understand.

Gravatarwhy, i ask again, would the republicans want to run against the candidate who runs the harder campaign?

please explain this for slow learners like me

Maybe they fear they can't overcome Barak's "style," no matter how hard they slime him. Maybe they're afraid he possesses the same amount of teflon that reagan had when attacked. Maybe they just feel so old and tired and used up and irrelevant that they really don't know what they feel or fear.

Gravatarcriticism of a campign tactics always gets parsed as vitriol personally directed at HRC.

It started long before the past couple months. As Hecate used to note frequently, of a field of imperfect candidates, somehow Hillary was the one who was singled out over and again. I've said many times her campaigning has been craptastic, her advisors inexcusable, and many of her positions regrettable. However, all good and fine liberals here notwithstanding, IMHO the contention that the level of vitriol directed at her here and elsewhere is based on nothing more than a clear and rational assessment of her campaign tactics is silly.

GravatarI hammered on the McCain is qualified but Obama isn't thing for a week, and 99% of the time the HRC supporters refused to even acknowledge the issue -The Old Man From Scene 24

GravatarHillary cannot win by conventional methods
Beowulf SchaefferRevolutionary | Homepage | 03.16.08 - 12:52 am | #

hillary can win the popular vote - "by conventional methods". whether she will or not is being put to empirical proof. to say that you know in advance that she won't win the popular vote is a prediction, not a fact

as for "i don't hate hillary, i am merely disappointed". i would appreciate it then if we could continue this discussion without accusations like

And Hillary's playing along, 'cuz it's not about the party, it's all about Hillary...

because that is a personal remark which bears traces of personal animosity, not a factual statement or an expression of unhappiness with something specific she has done.

look, i am not ignoring the harshness of some of her tactics. personally, i was afraid that the "hope you can xerox" remark would backfire on her because it cut a little too deeply, i thought, for the trangression that it was meant to point out. but that one seems to have drawn less resentment than many others. i have gotten tired of pointing out that barack plays hardball as well. personally i am appalled at the tactic he took of disqualifying a long time incumbent of the state senate seat he wanted, a good person, by challenging her ballot petition signatures in court

uh - those are some pretty damn hardball politics there - i might even call them unfair

the whole point of your objections is that you think hillary has "gone too far" in her campaign tactics against barack. i'm not sure what kind of a game you all think politics are supposed to be

.

GravatarI invite you to come to EschaCon and tell me to my face that I'm being irrational or being a sexist.

Psychodrama for Obama

Urm, calling the mutual enemy more qualified to be prez than your dem opponent seems to be in the realm of "do anything."

GravatarI actually find it kind of funny that so many people seem convinced that Hillary is by far the weaker candidate yet is so powerful, though her only power is to destroy, and Barack is so powerful he cannot lose yet at the same time so fragile that he will have his career destroyed by campaign trash talking by her.

Excuse me for finding that a not entirely consistent argument.

GravatarAnd Hillary's playing along, 'cuz it's not about the party, it's all about Hillary...

because that is a personal remark which bears traces of personal animosity, not a factual statement or an expression of unhappiness with something specific she has done.

You are wrong and I have the proof.
She came to Portland, OR during her 2006 NEW YORK SENATE CAMPAIGN. Rather than using her considerable star power to raise money for local Dems, she RAISED MONEY FOR HER NEW YORK SENATE CAMPAIGN. That is selfish, pure and simple. A bunch of us got on the radio and called the party and her campaign until they relented and gave a tiny itty bitty bit of money to the Oregon Democratic Party.

selfish
selfish

I posted this whole story in real time when it happened. This is just a tiny little story, but shows where she's coming from.

Gravatarmaybe a true statement but what if Obama destroys himself? do you think some folks might still blame Clinton?

I think some folks will think that another black political leader has been taken down in his prime.

I won't think so harshly, but if the Clinton campaign is the catalyst for the destruction of Obama's career, rather than the GOP, then Bill, Hillary and any of Chelsea's grandchildren will be spat upon in the street for it.

hillary can win the popular vote - "by conventional methods". whether she will or not is being put to empirical proof.

You're still dodging.

You say that politics is hardball, but you accuse me of silliness when I point out that almost ever scenario that gives Hillary the nomination entails the destruction of Obama's political career.

GravatarI would like to point out that some losing candidates for President effectively end their careers, while others do not. Running and losing is not always a career booster, and no one cares what the reason was.

GravatarI know what it means:

It means that our election system is like the rotten borough system in 18th century where votes in some areas count a lot more than votes in other areas. Naturally, the people who have figured out how to game this system, and those who simply prefer the outcome, have no problem with it at all.
