I'MMA LET YOU FINISH

Gravatar'morning!

Gravatar/thanks, Molly!

Gravatarhey peeps.

GravatarSo what's the proper scrabulous etiquette.

I was fooling around with the letters on the board and pressed play and the stoopit game took the word. I figured wtf, I was pretty sure it wasn't a word and JeffCo successfully challenged it. I've apologized. Can you unplay a word? Do I need to be banned from the game now? A hundred lashes with a wet noodle?

I feel quite contrite.

...

Oy haloscan already messing with me.

GravatarThanks, Molly

Gravatarql,
The ways of Scrabulous are strange (and JeffCO loves to challenge, I hear).

Gravatarlike the video, avedon, it's scaring fluffy tho.

GravatarThat gravatar was some sort of insect I saw swarming around my grape vine last winter. This winter has been colder so I've not seen them since, nor have i found where I put the original hi-rez pictures of it. They were iridescently blue, glinting from the light blue you see in the gravatar, to an almost ultra-violet black.

So no, I don't know what they are. Might be a moth of some kind due to the barbed tufts at the end of it's antenna.

GravatarDoug, you have to join facebook, which is free but makes some people squeamish. I'm there under my real name, but plenty of people use their online nyms or versions thereof.

Certainly my experience with Florida; people tend to see beaches and the rat that ate Orlando. There's so much natural beauty (and 26% of Florida's land is in public ownership); if that's all you're seeing you're utterly missing the boat.

Gravatarwell in a strange sort of way the 'toby' issue was a 'boon' to me personally.

GravatarAvedon -- oooooh. Very nice. Yeah, it's been awhile since I walked around the parks out here -- some very small, but cozy and pleasant. Thank God enough people think calling some place "Ann Arbor" means you should maintain some damn greenery for everyone to enjoy.

Gravatarthe shamanic Ojibway artist Norval Morrisseau saw the 'interconnectedness' of nature's 'spirit' beauty.

GravatarI think it's a facebook application. Technically illegal, and they keep threatening to shut it down, but so far it's still there.

I double checked, and yes, you can play on their (scrabulouos.com) website. The downside is I don't think you can play against facebook people, and without the social network of people to play against, there's not much point. I guess in the future if people complain about joining facebook they can meet up with other atriots of the same mindset there.

Scrabulous isn't actually illegal. In the US, you cannot copyright the rules of a game. Yes, the rightsholders to Scrabble have made threatening noises, but I don't think they've actually filed suit, merely tried to bully others into giving them something for nothing.

GravatarV,
I liked all those little beaches right off the side of the road, heading down into the Keys. Key West, not so much.

I have a friend in Chicago. A brilliant sculptor. He had completed a major commission and told me he'd probably 'never have another good idea again.' (silly idea of course) And that he was going to do the workbook 'the Artists Way'

which surprised me because he's a total cynic about that sort of thing.

well, hell, I did the workbook.

And one of the (okay this is so corny I know) things the author suggests is weekly 'artists dates' for replenishment.

GravatarIn this case, as a liriope is a monocotic grass, and a Liriodendron a dicottic tree, I think no close association -- but rather that the name may derive from the Lyre-shaped leaves of the tree, perhaps.

GravatarA New York man who withdrew money after a bank error gave him access to a multimillion-dollar account managed by a man with the same name has been charged with grand larceny.

Back in 1980 or so, Wells Fargo mistakenly credited my account $100 too much. I knew exactly how it happened-- it was a data entry mistake when one bank bought out another bank.

I went to the bank three separate times to try to straighten it out, because I knew it could only lead to trouble for me. Finally, the bank manager said it would cost more than $100 for them to fix it, so I should just keep it. I made him write me a letter to that effect, then (I was pretty young at the time) I took the money and hitchiked through Mexico for a week.

GravatarThey're ripping the tops off mountains in West Virginia coal country to feed our insatiable appetite for power. It's cheaper that way. And the trees and the animals and the flooding? It may not be pretty, but we've got all those dishwashers to run

...This is the new face of coal mining in Central Appalachia. It is called mountaintop removal. Instead of extracting coal the old-fashioned way, by burrowing, the mountain is extracted from the coal – blown up sequentially to reveal each black seam. Everything left over – trees, soil, plants and rock – is considered "overburden." It's dumped into the valleys below, filling them up.

Some say as many as 470 mountains in West Virginia, Kentucky and Virginia have been flattened this way. For the industry, it's a financial jackpot – fast, cheap and thorough. But for the mountains, and the communities nestled between them, it's war.

Their homes have been flooded, walls cracked, wells poisoned, streams polluted; their jobs have been forfeited, cemeteries unearthed and communities abandoned. Many suffer from early-onset dementia and kidney stones. And they've lost their ancestral home...

I think it's some kind of Christ metaphor. The title sequences were beautiful, and then it all went whackjob on me. Christ figure lying in the dirt with flies covering his face, urinating on himself, rescued and then tied to a cross being pelted with rocks by naked children; cut to a city scene where people are being gunned down and birds fly from the wound in one man's chest, people in evening wear are moving down the street on their knees . . . it made me long for an Archie comic book

Gravatarthis is weird, because the mister and I have recently rented and now bought the 1959 movie Black Orpheus, that was based on the myth. It's a good movie.

GravatarI was at a preview of sorts for the new show at the Art Institute of Chicago, which combines Edward Hopper and Winslow Homer. Highly recommended. Very beautiful images.

Both artists worked for a while in Gloucester, Massachusetts. A town would have been honored to have one of these geniuses, never mind two.

If res is up, and still headed to Chicago, I strongly encourage her to drop in and have a look.

I've watched it about 20+ times.

and have 2 VHS copies.

loaned one to a friend.

Jean Cocteau decided to retell the myth of Orpheus in contemporary France.
of course 'contemporary' in 1949 is quite different than how it appears to us now.
He 'pioneered' a lot of low-tech special effects for that film.
The premise is visually arresting and the music is moody and entrancing.

GravatarGamesmanship

Whether Rove left Washington in only body not spirit, or a substitute Rove is now beside Bush, it is evidently clear that Bush is still practising the same stragedy of "Make your weakness your strength" . In this case, he is running on his Telecom Immunity like it was certain death. Same with Waterboarding. Instead of admitting that it is illegal, they make it about 'surrendering to terrorists' blah blah blah.

But now the Rove doctrine is in trouble. The Democrats throughout this Bush administration, even after 2006, have been the most useless and embarrassing body of Congress in memory. They have failed to realise that this Rovian game could easily be defeated by merely standing up to the bully (something I bravely did back in schoolyard days). We know this is true, just look at the 9/11 Commission challenges by the White House. No interviews. OK interviews. No declassifying of key documents. OK they are declassified.

This time the bullying tactic is in great danger. Thanks to the obvious swell of the country's support toward the Democratic Presidential campaign, there is finally a brave few in the House who are standing up to the Bully over the telecom issue. Bush is now cornered for the rest of his Presidency. Last week he stood in front of the microphone and gave the same "be afraid" speech bullying to the American public. Almost immediately his approval rating plummeted to 19%, a record low for any President in history. The Bush who cried wolf now is falling on deaf ears.

This blog comment is a bit lengthy, but people should realise what has happened, Bush has been called on his bluff. The American people support the Congress in refusing to allow our privacy to be invaded. Bush has no hand. The Telecom Immunity battle will be his last stand. He literally can no longer insist on ANYTHING that goes against our constitution or the wishes of the American people.

GravatarBut it's a dry heat. Or so they always try to tell me.

Not when the monsoon rains hit. The humidity will jump from 30% to about 95% in 15 minutes. That's when my house cooling systems are set to turn off the swamp thing cooler and switch to AC, till things dry out in a couple hours.

Though I've started to put in fogging coolers for patios outside, when the monsoon rains hit, you don't bother to use them.

GravatarNotice that most the companies doing this are from somewhere else but the US.

yep. iowa is really getting into developing wind energy; and it's alot of foreign money going into it. nevertheless, it's exciting to see these state initiatives. new jobs are being created in these small communities who desperately need them; and it's also uniting the community college/univ of iowa into developing curriculum to build/operate these technologies.

GravatarWe will have to try to get a copy of that. I wonder if it is out on DVD. We have several older foreign films that we just love. One of my favorites is Quai Des Orfevres, a murder mystery from 1947, and the detective in it reminds me an awful lot of Columbo.
Another is Bob Le Flambeur about a gambler who comes up with a scheme to steel from a casino. It was made in 1959.
And one other favorite is Touchez Pas Au Grisbi with Jean Gabin in it. He reminds me and the mister of Spencer Tracy. It was made in 1954.

Three very good films.

GravatarMorning, friends, (Now that Obama looks to have this thing sewn up, I'm hoping we all are again),

Have to head back to the real world in a few. Woke up to see over 100 great egrets rise off the lagoon as the sun rose. Watched mating octopus late yesterday afternoon. Will have to pack those memories along with the dirty laundry and plastic bags and junk we remove from this little island when we leave. TSA doesn't quite know what to do with our luggage, always inspecting it on the flight home to discover basically it's filled with trash.

Oh, and finished Richard Russo's Straight Man. Haven't enjoyed a book that much in years. Laugh out loud funny.

Gravatarnoblejoanie
what a beautiful sight to wake up to. I get a glimpse of an egret or great blue heron every once in a while around here. One September when we went down to the highland games down in Charleston SC, we were going around the bend in the drive that went around a small pond and it was filled with several aquatic birds. Spoonbills, herons and egrets. It was wonderul, but momentary. Apparently they all had places to go.

GravatarLet me see if I have this correct:

When McStain couldn't raise money and needed money to keep his campaign going he borrowed money and used the funds promised by public financing as collateral for the loan.

Now that public financing will cap the amount of money he can spend, he is TELLING the FEC that he wants out of public financing.

And this from one of the authors of the "McStain/Feingold" campaign finance law, which sought to keep candidates from whoring themselves out to private, special interests.

Of course the MSM will ignore (except for KO) McStains flipflop on this issue and his caterwauling about Obama rejecting public money!

Because McStain must be portrayed as the "Straightshooter," his lies, flipflops and sexual escapades notwithstanding.

GravatarYea, but if you scratch some of these "green initiatives" you find a load of the usual bullshit. Sometimes its just a PR move, no real substance, to cover up business as usual. And others have something real in them, but its covered by layer upon layer of the good-old-boy network, "consultants" and such, which take the bulk of them money. Like everything else, the assholes have figured out how to make boatloads of money by playing up the enviro card.

GravatarMcStalin

GravatarMike McConnell and Michael Mukasey are saying that the US is losing intelligence information because the telecommunications industries are less eager to "cooperate" with the Feds, so the House has to hurry up and OK the new, give-the-telecoms-retroactive-scofflaw- powers act.

The Dems are replying, well, you shoulda OK'd the old law.

Why don't the Dems say: bullshit. You can wiretap using the current law; you just have to justify it within 72 hours, and judges never turn you down.

We all know what's going on here. They're spying on their political enemies, and if they get caught, they're going to jail. They're gonna get caught, it's inevitable, so they wanna be sure they can get away with it.

Which I fear they will.

Gravatarfoolme1ns --spoonbills, lucky you. One of the world's most beautiful birds.

Speaking of highland games, my husband learned that his birth family is seriously Scottish (clan Donald) and we'd like to go to one someday.

GravatarWhich was my point, in a slightly different context:

...Last week council was given four-colour architectural plans for another sensible pedestrian trail, this one along Bedford Basin, stretching from Hogan's Point all the way to Bedford proper. Everyone congratulated the planners for the pretty drawings, and there was a general round of "Wow, we're so wise," until councillor Bob Harvey rudely interrupted the self-love fest with the observation that "there's a whole library of pretty pictures" over at city hall---plans for pedestrian-friendly streetscapes, plans for hiking trails, plans for pools and rinks and courts and ball fields.

Plenty of plans. Just no money to realize them.

Let's get back to what nobody wants to talk about: the Commonwealth Games. Remember the arguments? By spending $200 million of city money (and $2 billion or so in total) on world-class facilities for elite athletes from far away, we somehow or another would have ended up with an entire generation of local athletic superkids. And never mind the cost: with some creative budget juggling we could have afforded it all, without raising taxes.

Surely, if we had the money for the Commonwealth Games, we've got enough money for all the neighbourhood recreational facilities we could ever possibly need.

Alas, when it comes to creating a simple pedestrian trail, or a walking-friendly street or neighbourhood pool, there aren't a few dozen well-connected business mucky-mucks who can make boatloads of money servicing bloated construction budgets.

'Tis a pity, that.

hard to know what you are seeing because so many versions with different cuts were made for various govt boards.

I was interested tosee if a 1933 Austrian film contained 'messages' about the political situation.

It 'seems' to be euphemistic in some ways and the last ten minutes are totally inexplicable.

a tragic love story seems to erupt into a soviet style workers paradise film complete with happy workers celebrating labour, the land, and the birth of a child!!!!

Gravatarnoblejoanie,
The games run on a circuit. You should be able to find them by doing a search on google and see what might be in your area. It is great fun, if you like watching guys throw things, like telephone poles and bales of hay and hammers and weights. They love to throw things. We usually just do the Saturday thing, but I think they do a golf thing on Friday. GravatarBut:

'Gunning quite literally takes the traditional "Pills Of White Mercury" by the scruff of the neck and delivers a spirited rendition that makes the song his own. Geographically speaking, it's set in my native North East Scotland. The opening verse mentions the River Ugie, which sheds its waters into the North Sea on the northern outskirts of the fishing port, Peterhead. At the outset, the narrator " ...spied a dear comrade, dressed in white flannel " who had died of syphilis, a disease from which, because of his own loose social habits - and despite his parents' repeated warnings, the narrator is also suffering. When Gunning introduced this song during his Kerrville 2004 mainstage set, he commented that he had first heard it performed by a Scottish band. By way of settling his affairs, in the closing verse the narrator requests " Now get you six strong fellows to carry my coffin, Six pretty maids to bear up my pall, And give each of them a bunch of red roses, So when they pass by me they'll not know the smell ."'

GravatarRuth,

It agrees a lot with "KS." Except that Westen does clinical tests that show not only how bias effects political choices but he actually wired peoples heads to see what parts of their brains did what during their obvious denials.

Westen incidentally is a Democrat who points out how the Dems have often appealed to people's rationality, while the Goopers have focused on their emotionality.

Emotional always trumps rational thinking, which is why Westen recommends Dems change tactics.

trade some tiles. Hell trade all of them. You're bound to be better off.

GravatarThere's a lot of this stuff online:

The metamorphosis of a ca.1795 ballad about "pills and salts of white mercury" into The Bad Girl's Lament" and "The Streets of Laredo" is one of the best documented evolutions in Engliah ballad scholarship. ("St. James Infirmary Blues" is a stretch, however.)People, ballad printers included, evidently loved this stuff.

The late Kenneth Goldstein edited an entire Folkways album around 1960 showing examples of the sequential alterations.

I believe Philips Barry first pieced the evolution together in the 1930s. For a specific reference, see N. Howard Thorp, "Songs of the Cowboys," ed. by Fife & Fife (N.Y.: Clarkson Potter, 1966).

Gravatarplantsman, do you want to play "real"? Can you set up a game?

GravatarSure. brb.

Gravatarjuan no no nsense-- besides a pretty nifty history, the song is damn good. At least, the Old Blind Dogs version. I'm not familiar with the others, but wiki says:

"Streets of Laredo" (Roud 2), also known as the "Cowboy's Lament", is a famous cowboy ballad in which a dying cowboy dispenses his advice to a living one.

Recordings of the song have been made by Johnny Cash, Joan Baez, Roy Rogers, Marty Robbins, Chet Atkins, Arlo Guthrie, Rex Allen and many country and western singers, as well as avante garde rocker John Cale, the British pop group Prefab Sprout and Mercury Rev.

The song plays a prominent role in the book and film Bang the Drum Slowly, in which the song is sung. The words from the title replace the words "beat the drum slowly" from the lyrics above. This in turn is the phrase used in the song "Bang the Drum Slowly" on the album Red Dirt Girl by Emmylou Harris.

An Irish band, The Chieftains, made an interesting link between this song and the traditional Irish song "The Bard of Armagh" on their CD "Long Journey Home", as both songs are sung on the same tune.

GravatarI'm going to fix breakfast. See you all in a bit, I hope.

Molly -- still not sure what to do about that other thing. Perhaps an e-mail exchange with the party in question would be illuminating.

Also -- sound equipment? Want me to do anything there?

e-mail or chat l8r.

*MWAH!*

GravatarBut Moe, most 60's survivors remember the song best for "If you get an outfit, you'll be a cowboy too" by smothers brothers? I believe.

GravatarI want to play Steve too! Steve, please post who you are on fb

GravatarDid you see the cell-phone video of the Serbian Girls looting lingerie and shoes while their "brothers" were protesting Kosovo's Independence?

GravatarHm. ("hm" was a word the robot played on me)

Facebook, eh?

brb

GravatarDid you see the cell-phone video of the Serbian Girls looting lingerie and shoes while their "brothers" were protesting Kosovo's Independence?
plantsman, silly

the whole world is watching, huh?

okay, gotta do things now, myself. cya

GravatarThe robot's got a zillion of 'em. Licensed Scrabble uses Merriam-Webster, a dictionary you may have heard of.

GravatarThis Mudcat thread (about a quarter of the way down) mentions a Folkways album--The Unfortunate Rake: A Study in the Evolution of a Ballad -- from 1960 that has 20 different songs, all derived from the same English ballad.

Gravatarhbk - wanna play?

GravatarBut Moe, most 60's survivors remember the song best for "If you get an outfit, you'll be a cowboy too" by smothers brothers? I believe.

As I walked out on the streets of Laredo.
As I walked out on Laredo one day,
I spied a young cowboy all dressed in white linen,
Dressed in white linen as cold as the clay.
"I can see by your outfit that you are a cowboy."
"I see by your outfit you are a cowboy too."
"We see by our outfits that we are both cowboys.
If you get an outfit, you can be a cowboy too."

GravatarIt's not bad, SteveLG. There are nearly 40 Atriots to be found there, and lots of them play scrabulous.

I found the best way to start is to search "NTodd" and then get in touch with him there.

GravatarSure ql.

I was just listening to all the trouble Renzi is in.

Damn.

GravatarI'll set aside some time this evening, before I go to the Blue Rodeo concert.
Moe Szyslak

Son of a b--! Funny, it's pretty much exactly 20 years since I saw them play live, right when "Try" hit big.

They've written a crapload of great songs since them. Bet the show will be excellent!

Gravatar"In the words of the wise Arabella, pax."

what do that mean?

GravatarThe "real" licensed Scrabble (which you can briefly test-drive for free) lets you assign a skill level to your opponent, uses a much more normal dictionary, and has pretty tiles.

I bought that from Best Buy and I enjoy playing it, the only problem is, I am a real multitasker, and it takes up my whole screen and doesn't let me see my task bar, so I can see if my sister is instant messaging me, and I can't keep up with the conversations here. It also wants to shut down my computer after I've played about 3 games on it. I love the game, but not this disc. Oh, and I have to have the disc in my computer. I might do better to just pay for it again and just download it. :-(

GravatarLooks like Nader is gonna be on Meet the Press tomorrow. Some think he has an announcement to make.

http://www.mcclatchydc.com/homep...tory/ 28459.html

His announcement better be that he's supporting Obama, or even Hillary. But I doubt it.

GravatarHey SteveNS! That Commonwealth Games thing I'm working on has turned into a monster story. To be published March 13.

GravatarPoor McSaint. An "Arizona Co-Chair" of his campaign, Renzi is.

GravatarFacebook peeps can find me on other Atriots friends lists by my pic.

GravatarSteveLG, your name is apparently very common.

GravatarCool stuff, Moe -- think it's going to be an issue in the rumoured upcoming election?

Gravatarfoolme1ns, check it out at Game House.com, I think. Downloadable for sure.

Gravatar
what do that mean?

Well, at that moment, we were talking about how we need to walk away when we get angry or upset. And she always signs that way.

GravatarEven I walked away last night - I surprised myself.

GravatarHis announcement better be that he's supporting Obama, or even Hillary. But I doubt it.

On top of that, none of them are me. I guess I'll have to select something wine-releated for my nym.

I haven't gotten a 'confirmation email' from facebook. Do they usually take, like, forever?

Weird.

GravatarSitemeter continues to amuse me. I just saw that someone has clicked on my site via Hecate, from Iran.

Gravatar"Streets of Laredo" (Roud 2), also known as the "Cowboy's Lament", is a famous cowboy ballad in which a dying cowboy dispenses his advice to a living one.

I like the Smothers Brothers version

Funny stuff.

So get yourself an outfit, you can be a cowboy too

Gravatarthink it's going to be an issue in the rumoured upcoming election?
SteveNS

It should be, but it probably won't be. I can't believe I'm the only one tracking this down-- that says less about me than about how lame that One Remaining Paper is.

There should be (but won't be) a full inquiry. Blame the press.

Thanks Plantsman. I will do that. I also bought the real game last week so that me and the fam could play together. That's been fun.

GravatarThe confirmation emails are usually quick, but there was some trouble at Facebook/Scrabulous over the last several hours.

GravatarDid someone mention Ralph Nader?

GravatarCK, you may want to watch yer guy on MTP tomorrow.

GravatarI also bought the real game last week so that me and the fam could play together. That's been fun.

A big thing in my birth family, but impractical in my own home, for obvious reasons.

GravatarShould be interesting - I know at least 3 people that sent him over $300 and that's just from AK. I'd work my ass off for him, 'cause he's done more for this country than any 10 democrats combined.

GravatarClearly Mr. Shaw did not anticipate the Dubya level of unreasonable.

GravatarI can't believe I'm the only one tracking this down-- that says less about me than about how lame that One Remaining Paper is.

Yeah, investigative reporting doesn't happen much hereabouts. CBC does a little, but for the most part, they're just happy to churn out crime blotters and lame "news you can use!" pieces.

There are people out there who think "Live At 5" is hard news, and they are legion. The Chronically Horrid is targeting the same readership / viewership.

I thought of you when I heard about the Daily News -- is the new daily paper going to be any kind of competition for The Coast?

GravatarSaw a quote from Gates in Al Jazeera, the thugs in charge will "evaluate" the surge in July and August re" impending cuts.

Better believe they will make the cuts, in time for fall elections, everyone jump on board the flag waving express for McCain.

as the video says, if ralph runs this time he can stick his seat belts where the minimum wage don't shine.

they provide him his laurels and tell him to rest on them and take a damn nap or something.

GravatarMorning,all.

Off to Gomorrah on the Hudson -- we'll talk in the evening, j'espere.

In the meantime, the greatest vocal thing you'll ever hear is up at the homepage.

Later!!!

I'm not going any where PM - but I do like to poke folks in the party I used to pay dues to.

Gravataroh fuck the NYT and mcstain: in 48 hours we hear that the asshole repugnicants circled the wagons and are donating heartedly...pathetic stunt

GravatarAnyone ever play the board game Kings Cribbage?

It's an unholy amalgam of cribbage and scrabble -- and it's pretty challenging and fun, if you like both of those games.

GravatarTHANKS MOE
i'm going to set aside some time this weekend to get into this

GravatarLast I heard, McCain was crowing but would not release dollar amounts.

GravatarI thought of you when I heard about the Daily News -- is the new daily paper going to be any kind of competition for The Coast?
SteveNS

No. It's just another throwaway Metro paper-- I think they're just doing the Halifax thing so they can sell "coast to coast" advertising thing. Our sales dept. doesn't seem at all concerned.

We are worried, tho, becuase they have a reputation for sloppy distribution. They'll get into a coffeeshop or whatever, and make such a mess that the management gets rid of *all* the free papers, not just the offending one.

I write the polls at our place, including this one.

Gravatarthey provide him his laurels and tell him to rest on them and take a damn nap or something.

GravatarHeh. Tina Fey is hosting SNL.

Gravatara very good decision out of cali:

Health Net ordered to pay $9 million after canceling cancer patient's policy
The punitive damage award is the first of its kind and has prompted the giant medical insurer to scrap practices that have recently come under fire.
By Lisa Girion
Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
February 23, 2008
One of California's largest for-profit insurers stopped a controversial practice of canceling sick policyholders Friday after a judge ordered Health Net Inc. to pay more than $9 million to a breast cancer patient it dropped in the middle of chemotherapy.

The ruling by a private arbitration judge was the first of its kind and the most powerful rebuke to the state's major insurers whose cancellation practices are under fire from the courts, state regulators and elected officials.

Calling Woodland Hills-based Health Net's actions "egregious," Judge Sam Cianchetti, a retired Los Angeles County Superior Court judge, ruled that the company broke state laws and acted in bad faith.....

The judge's strong denunciation of the way Health Net carried out Bates' cancellation and big money award stunned and pleased regulators and patient advocates....

The case was heard by a private judge, rather than a jury, because Health Net required Bates to agree to binding arbitration, a practice common among insurers.

"That's the point," said Carl Tobias, a law professor at the University of Richmond in Virginia. "Those kind of agreements that mandate arbitration tend to favor the bigger party or the interest with more economic clout."

The size of the award will require other insurers to take notice, he said.

GravatarGlad to know you've taken the good of our country to heart.

Hah. That's rich. How's that surge working out for ya?

GravatarYeehaa Molly.

Great news.

GravatarI was hoping the subway answer would win, but readers had their own opinions.

GravatarIs Miss Vicki being held somewhere against her will? Why hasn't she held a press conference, as promised?

Is McStain afraid that she'll blow him and his "principles" sky high?

It's a pretty good take off on the anonymous video to the CoS.

with images of some familiar people who supported Nader in 2000, but almost assuredly won't this time around.

and they admit that Nader used to do some good for the country. though not when he was running for President on funds provided by the Republican Party

GravatarDo you mean, Krugman is coming to EschaCon?

Oh hell, what I'm gonna be missing.

GravatarRalph Nader's getting to be sort of a national Lar Daley, who Midwesterners of a certain age will remember...

GravatarBe in what?

GravatarWTF are you talking about?

I forget.

GravatarI had written to him at his NYT address and hadn't heard back, so I had sort of given up. Then it occurred to me that his school address was likely to have fewer filters and less traffic.

Bingo.

Tom - your starting to act like a Republican. 'cuse me - is that why the Dems and Rethugs kept him out of the debates. I think it was Ellul who pointed out that once you embrace the propaganda tactics of your enemy you become them. Give me a break.

GravatarMiz Molly rawks!

GravatarSheets

GravatarAnd sheets.

GravatarMaybe Nader can help McCain get elected and we can invade Iran. Won't that be fun.

GravatarThere's also a really good chance that Hamell on Trial will be there, although that's not totally set yet.

GravatarNever played cribbage here either.

My grandparents used to play one or two games of scrabble every day. I still have their set which was covered in leather and had fancy tiles. A lot of the letters are beginning to wear off. Mr. ql won't play with me anymore. I beat him too regularly.

Gravatarif i read the NYT, i wouldn't anymore

Sound like a Republican? Nah, more like someone from CounterPunch.

When you have folks like the Oregon Family Council making calls to get you on the ballot, ya have to wonder what the real motive is.

Snow, you're right. Ralph agrees with everything that McCain says. Fuck off. Democracy is not important to you I guess. It's winning that counts - we can speak through our elected leaders - ehh. Those powerful Congressmen and Senators who are only there to work for us.

I don't know - you tell me. The Dems and the Republicans have become peas-in-a-pod. They are almost indistinguishable now days.

GravatarSo GM is going to support him; does that mean he should quit?

I think we are all wondering what Ralph Nader's real motives are, since his actions are more likely to result in FEWER of his stated goals being acheived than more. i hate to think badly of the guy, I really do; but it sure starts to look like vanity.

I have to laugh, because that's the same thing the corporate types were saying about Ralph Nader back in the '60's. Sheesh - I wish folks would come up with something new and creative.
