Two points for those of you coming to DC,
I was up on Capitol Hill today. It is not true that there are no porta potties, but no way are there enough porta potties. This weekend, an even larger contingent of Canada Geese than normal have settled on the Mall. Wear boots.
It is pretty exciting to see the huge banners hanging from all kinds of buildings celebrating the Inauguration. The Corcoran, the Newseum, and the Teamster's Building were all neat. But it's the bigger than life size pictures of Jack and Jackie at his Inauguration in the window of Brooks Brothers that made me cry, for some reason.

and yet they want to pour more troops into the country?

President Bush deflected a secret request by Israel last year for specialized bunker-busting bombs it wanted for an attack on Iran’s main nuclear complex and told the Israelis that he had authorized new covert action intended to sabotage Iran’s suspected effort to develop nuclear weapons, according to senior American and foreign officials.
White House officials never conclusively determined whether Israel had decided to go ahead with the strike before the United States protested, or whether Prime Minister Ehud Olmert of Israel was trying to goad the White House into more decisive action before Mr. Bush left office. But the Bush administration was particularly alarmed by an Israeli request to fly over Iraq to reach Iran’s major nuclear complex at Natanz, where the country’s only known uranium enrichment plant is located.
The White House denied that request outright, American officials said, and the Israelis backed off their plans, at least temporarily. But the tense exchanges also prompted the White House to step up intelligence-sharing with Israel and brief Israeli officials on new American efforts to subtly sabotage Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, a major covert program that Mr. Bush is about to hand off to President-elect Barack Obama.

Bushboy neglected Afghanistan and deceitfully and stupidly invaded Iraq. Obama will not let the Taliban retake power in Afghanistan, and will leave Iraq within two years.

I was reading a short piece that Amory Lovins wrote in 1991 saying that if the reductions in oil consumption in the United States in the late 70s and the first years of the 80s, had continued during the Reagan-Bush I years that we could have stopped importing oil from the Persian Gulf countries.
So, the Republicans were also making certain that the money would keep flowing to the Saudis so they could fund our enemies as well as arming them directly.
Republicans are the enemies of the United States, that's the only logical conclusion. They've sold us to the oil interests and the Chinese government.

The rot in the American system is related to that in the British system. Pointing out that there are European governments that are better run and produce a better standard of living for their people is forbidden in the United States. When there are problems finding or fixing medical issues, there really isn't much left except finding second (or third) opinions and other practitioners. I have seen it make a difference often enough.
Sometimes, of course, they just don't know what causes things. At that point, all we can do is what we feel is best for ourselves. Even if you are feeling ill, you have to make the best of your waking moments even if that means embracing your illness. Therapies often need to be emotional and spiritual more as much as anything else, perhaps starting with just knowing someone else cares.
This kind of stuff can be hard for the ailing to talk about. Heck, I find it hard to talk about.

Russia and European Union officials have signed a deal, which could pave the way for the re-opening of gas supplies to Europe.
The deal, signed by Russian PM Vladimir Putin and Czech PM Mirek Topolanek, sets out how gas flowing to Europe through Ukraine will be monitored.
Hundreds of thousands of European homes have no heating after gas shipments via Ukraine were halted on Wednesday.
Mr Topolanek is now in Ukraine for talks with PM Yulia Tymoshenko.
The deal cannot work without Ukrainian agreement.
Ahead of the meeting with Mr Topolanek, Ms Tymosheno:"We are ready, as we go into this meeting, to take all political and technical steps so that Europe receives gas."

LONDON - More than two-dozen British schoolgirls have been suspended for using the Facebook website to engage in a hate campaign against their teacher, a school principal said.
The 29 girls were suspended from the venerable Grey Coat Hospital School in London for persecuting a member of staff, Principal Rachel Allard said Friday.
It was not clear what the girls wrote on the website but the Telegraph newspaper says the targeted teacher was forced to seek counselling.

More rumor: when Pitt first got logos (1963, IIRC), they wore gold helmets. So they tested the logos by putting them on one side. They didn't like it, so they changed to black helmets for their "playoff" game. But for some reason, the "logo on one side" thing became a "tradition."
Could be bullshit, but I've never heard a better explanation.

Sounds like the Hollywood school of Buddhism to me. I don't find that kind of Buddhism particularly convincing either and annoying. If you've read any of the Theravada scriptures, listening to it can be pretty aggravating, especially since you know that a lot of people figure their blather is authentic or all there is to it.

The squash dish came out really well, even without the curry leaves (which I will try next time). This is Amanda Hesser's recipe:
3 tablespoons olive oil
1/2 cup chopped onion
1/2 teaspoon turmeric
3/4 teaspoon lightly crushed cumin (I used 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin)
1/4 teaspoon cayenne
3 cups baked, braised or mashed butternut squash
1 teaspoon black mustard seeds
1 red chili
10 curry leaves
1/2 cup unsweetened coconut
Salt
1. Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a medium saucepan. Add the onion and cook over medium-low heat until softened. Stir in the turmeric, cumin and cayenne and cook for 1 minute. Fold in the squash and warm gently.
2. Heat 2 tablespoons oil in a small saute pan. Add the mustard seeds, chili and curry leaves. When the seeds begin to pop, stir in the coconut off the heat. Fold into the squash, and season with salt.

And if you were in his position, would you think that sending the right messages to lefties was the priority?
people, children, who die needlessly simply due to insurance company greed? *not* a "leftist" issue.
or do you think rethugs who are poor don't suffer these same kinds of crap? c'mon, rootless. you're smart. universal single payer= a winner for any candidate, any pol, and gets the attention of 99% of the fucking population. if only some dem were savvy enough to understand how to beat the rethugs and media about the head and shoulders like Moore. but that's not your boy. no sir.

surprised, i am.
i wasn't really taking or making sides, basically i agree with Moe also.
but i don't disagree with the notion that what you do in life, effects what happens to you in life.

Does he grind his teeth? That causes little cracks you can't even see until you bite on something and then you're spitting it out into your hand. I've done that. Sucks.

I saw a poster for that when I drove by a Burger King. What the hell are they talking about?
From the commercials I've seen, an Angry Whopper is basically a whopper with jalapenos and some kind of spicy, hot onions on it.

There is also the karma that says, palace or no palace, Amin went through life with the equivalent of blown tweeters."
A hired killer (take George Bush...please) is not a fully formed human being.
Love and hate can not exist in the same space.
There's some justice in that, it seems to me.

I'm sure George Bush is very upset about it.
Oh, wait. No he's not.
But even if he was, let's tally up, shall we? One side, a million dead Iraqis, a sunken American city, a world economy in freefall, a nation that has embraced torture, etc. On the other side, George Bush feeling a little uneasy in the evening.
That's some bullshit justice, let me tell ya.

She'd already been on the phone for hours with Apple support and Earthlink support, who told her the porblem soounds like it's the modem. And, true, the modem's lights aren't on or blinking anymore.
Ordered from Wal-Mart.com, but we used the store's computer. For some reason she seems paralyzed about just shipping the damn thing back, it's still under warranty. Asks, what do I think? And why would a 5 month old modem not work? I say, things are sometimes defective, send it back!

Awesome defensive game.
Except every time I see the Ravens, I see what the Browns _could_ have been if Modell hadn't screwed Cleveland.

I seriously doubt George W. has a moment's remorse about anything. But that only proves what a half-formed human being he is--and he pays a heavy price for that, whether he's aware of it or not.

No one could have predicted that Afghans would have access to Aljazeera beamed into their homes by satellite in Kabul and Kandahar, and that they might take issue with the humanitarian catastrophe that the Great Satan and Baby Satan (from the Islamist perspective) have inflicted on the people of Gaza for the past two weeks with no end in sight...and that they might target US and NATO troops in retaliation. Could blowback against US troops happen in Iraq, too?
The BBC World Service runs a Pashto/Dari broadcast reporting news of Israel's war on Gaza on every laptop and radio 24/7, and Afghans are inclined to view this conflict as an Israeli-Zionist/US offensive against Muslims. Also, Pakistanis are watching the atrocities on Aljazeera and the BBC broadcasts an Urdu service into Pakistan, and the leading Pakistani newspaper Dawn has used the word "savagery" in its ledes on Gaza.
Certainly, first-hand reports from desperate and dying Palestinians and parents carrying dead infants and toddlers and endless scenes of brutality and carnage inflicted on the elderly and women and children of Gaza have a tendency to radicalize those who are already considered to be radical -- like the Afghan and Pakistani Taliban and the Afghan war lords who are, after all, Muslims.
Thanks so much for that excellent link -- I've bookmarked it for future reference and political activism.
What a great list of Israel's sponsors and supporters to boycott starting right now and then letting them know the reason why you won't be buying their products!
It ties right in with Naomi Klein's latest piece for The Nation:
It's time. Long past time. The best strategy to end the increasingly bloody occupation is for Israel to become the target of the kind of global movement that put an end to apartheid in South Africa.
Exactly!
