well, i'm watching 'all the president's men' and the scene where dustin hoffman/carl bernstein calls the library of congress to confirm the that howard hunt had checked out books on the kennedys recently. the woman who answered confirmed he had and went to get more info, and when she came back on line was rattled and denied he had.
isn';t that info private -- even now, and a library is not required to release that info without a search warrant.

Yes, I believe so, but you miss the point. That it's so easy to find out information if you know where to look. That's why Tricky Dick and crew were brought down. I am sure KKKarl thought he'd never get brought down, and look at the bastard now. Emails. Comey. You name it. There is always a trail and info somewhere.

Well Cezanne's father wanted him to be an avocat

while the interracial relationship is perceived as freakishly weird, the fact that the 37 year old distinguished doctor picks up a young 23 year old thing at a "Dean's party" after lecturing at a university is seen as perfectly normal.

37 vs. 23 was nothing in those days. Audrey Hepburn made an entire career out of on-screen romances with men 20+ years her senior: Bogart (30 yrs!), Astaire (ditto), Gary Cooper, Cary Grant, Rex Harrison.
As for this particular movie: they couldn't very well cast anyone but Poitier, whose status at the time was unique, and they couldn't cast anyone but Houghton because Hepburn was damn well going to have her niece in the movie and didn't want to hear any of your backtalk! Sort of a fait accompli...

I'm sure they do, and it's pretty much standard procedure to recommend aborting the extras. It's the fundie parents who ignore the advice of the doctors who let these litters happen, with tragic results.
If we're going to have legalized in vitro fertilization, we should have the law contain a requirement that doctors get final say on how many to try and deliver.

Dana Priest and Anne Hull have another beaut. If by beaut I mean sorry tale of how repubs treat vets:
For the past 2 1/2 years, the counseling center at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms, Calif., was a difficult place for Marines seeking help for post-traumatic stress. Navy Cmdr. Louis Valbracht, head of mental health at the center's outpatient hospital, often refused to accept counselors' views that some Marines who were drinking heavily or using drugs had PTSD, according to three counselors and another staff member who worked with him.
...
In an interview, Valbracht denied he ever told counselors that PTSD does not exist. But he did say "it is overused" as a diagnosis these days, just as "everyone on the East Coast now has a bipolar disorder." He said this "devalues the severity of someone who actually has PTSD," adding: "Nowadays it's like you have a hangnail. Someone comes in and says 'I have PTSD,' " and counselors want to give them that diagnosis without specific symptoms. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp...ml?

So, the law would say that any woman who becomes pregnant by means other than vaginal-penile intercourse would only be allowed to become pregnant if she were to agree beforehand that a doctor would determine how many infants she would be allowed to give birth to as a result of that procedure? Or would there be a top-limit applied in all cases, such that every woman in that situation would be told that she could have the procedure and be allowed to give birth to, say, at most two children as a result of the procedure?
And would that law not apply to a woman who became pregnant through vaginal-penile intercourse and whose body is supporting more than one fetus, only one of which is viable?

No. But just like doctors can't prescribe fatal doses of painkillers, there should be some medical guidelines on the use of fertility drugs. Either they can mandate a reduction if too many embryos take hold, or they should change the procedure to only implant one or two at a time.
The reason they do multiples now is because of cost, trying to increase the chance of success. But since the parents are clearly too ignorant to abide by proper medical advice it's time to change the procedure.

Maybe the parents aren't ignorant; maybe they're conflicted and have to make a difficult decision.
If the law isn't going to set hard limits, the guidelines you describe would leave women and the medical profession exactly where they are now.

Irish catholic priest stereotype on "Guess Who" right now.
The daughter is played by Katherine Hepburn's real life niece...
Katharine Houghton was born on March 10, 1945, in Hartford, Connecticut, the daughter of Marion Hepburn Grant (Katharine Hepburn's younger sister) and Ellsworth Grant. Before going into the movies, she went to Sarah Lawrence College and majored in philosophy. Her debut in the movies was in 1967's Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967) as Joanna Drayton. This movie also starred her aunt, Katharine Hepburn, with whom which she has had a close relationship, Spencer Tracy and Sidney Poitier. Since this time, she has starred in over fifty on and off Broadway and New England regional theater productions. She is also a playwright and amongst her credits are such productions as: "Best Kept Secret", "Merlin", "The Marry Month Of May", "Mortal Friends", "On The Shady Side", "The Right Number", "Phone Play" and her translation of Anouilh's "Antigone". She also presents lectures: "Katharine X Three", "My Grandmother's House Near The River" and "The Secret Life Of Louisa May Alcott".

It has to do with marriage, not fucking so much. Think of a young man growing up to the age when marriage seems advisable in his society. This used to be at a fairly young age. If he wants a fertile wife the woman can't be much younger (or she won't menstruate). So it does have roots in history that the partners are fairly close in age, at least in first marriages.
That the difference in ages almost always benefits the older partner in power and so on is probably what Atrios points out. Older women seldom marry younger men.

I'd like to see evidence that women have married men of the same age throughout history. As I understand it, the man has often been several years to several decades older.
And the point about children was.. well that is exactly my point. You can't expect a 50 year old man who wants to have children to marry a 50 year old women.
My point wasn't that there would never have been age differences of the type you mention, only that there is a fairly good and natural reason why partners are often pretty close in age, and this is the way one used to get married in most agricultural societies. There are exceptions, especially where polygamy was common, but mostly people got married fairly young. My family records in some lines go back to 1500s and at least my ancestors were close to each other in age within each marriage.
You can't expect a 50 year old man who wants to have children to marry a 50 year old women.
But historically speaking most 50-year old men wouldn't have wanted to have children as they already had them by that age.

Oh hell, I ain't even gonna try. As I explained before: when I tried it the last time it took me four hundred pages and I just scratched the surface. That question - men and women and the age differences and the desire factor is one of the most intriguing of all questions and the answers are simply not very easy.
What women are seeking and what men are seeking are seldom the same thing and the obvious things are seldom as important as it would seem on the surface. Most of the answers, oddly enough, seem to be embroiled in people's self-images and not in their egos.

It's interesting to speculate on this. But during some eras 50 was very old indeed. A man of that age would not expect to see any new children grow up. If (as I suspect) one reason for having those children was to have someone to support you in old age then it might not have made much sense at that age. I'm just guessing here.

Depended on class too. A lot of men couldn't afford a "decent" bride until they'd established themselves, or inherited something. And then they'd want a child bearer.

Hersh, re Taguba:
“He was ethical and he knew his stuff,” Myatt said. “We really became close, and I’d trust him with my life. We talked about military strategy and policy, and the moral aspect of war—the importance of not losing the moral high ground.” Myatt followed Taguba’s involvement in the Abu Ghraib inquiry, and said, “I was so proud of him. I told him, ‘Tony, you’ve maintained yourself, and your integrity.’ ”
Taguba got a different message, however, from other officers, among them General John Abizaid, then the head of Central Command. A few weeks after his report became public, Taguba, who was still in Kuwait, was in the back seat of a Mercedes sedan with Abizaid. Abizaid’s driver and his interpreter, who also served as a bodyguard, were in front. Abizaid turned to Taguba and issued a quiet warning: “You and your report will be investigated.”
“I wasn’t angry about what he said but disappointed that he would say that to me,” Taguba said. “I’d been in the Army thirty-two years by then, and it was the first time that I thought I was in the Mafia.”

They will not necessarily have problems the rest of their lives. Well, I guess if I were a 37 year old professor, I'd try to meet a 23 year old girl too....and let's face it; she'd be a girl. I'm only 30 and women who are 25 are girls in my eyes. But bless them just the same We're all just people, after all.

Atrios may be amused that the first person I heard make his point was the legendary Dr. Laura Schlesinger.

I was a 34 year old grad student when I started dating my then-23 year old wife-to-be. This was in 1988, FWIW. Seems to be working out so far.

I keep thinking I might pick up with someone aged 20 to 40 and bring her home to stay with me and my wife, as we have sort of drifted apart, separate beds and I'm too old for this sort of thing kind of stuff.
But I don't have the distinguished position of lecturing to make them drool. And I've been married almost 40 years, which probably doesn't me a very appetizing specimen as a sperm donor.
Still, Jimmy Carter said it was ok to lust in my heart.
Movies are fantasies, even with interracial May-December romances.
Nice fantasies though. Beat hell out of blowing each other to bits over some black oil.

"I forget: Why am I supposed to care who Keith Olbermann dates?

In general, I agree with this.
However, if it turned out that Keith O had started dating Karl Rove, I believe that would be a legitimate topic of discussion.

I've never understood the mores of May-December dating. Feminists, and everybody else, fought for the right of a 21+ woman to make up her own mind about everything, including whom to take as a lover. But at the same time the zeitgeist suddenly wanted to protect young (but adult) women from "cradle-robbing" old men. So, which is it? Are the innocent young things competent or aren't they?
My own theory is that the newly-liberated older women wanted to squelch the competition.

She's an adult. As far as I'm concerned, their ages are their business.

And why shouldn't it be normal? Maybe in those days 23 year old women didn't act like infantilized teenagers, and so the age difference didn't seem so much like child molestation. If young adults today weren't so goddamn unbearable, I'd think about screwing one or two myself. Besides, in the old days, way before GWCD?, young women looked for men who were financially ready to start a family, so for younger women there just weren't many marriageable men their own age.

So racial discrimination = bad...
but age discrimination = good?

That's one important reason. There's certainly a big difference. People don't change but culture and expectations do. Like Paris said, it was an act and she acted dumb. Along with that went the party persona. And if that wasn't encouraged by males around her, and the culture in general, it simply wouldn't happen. But you see it over and over because of the environment.
In the bookstore yesterday I picked up one of those 70's nostalgia paperbooks with ads and headlines of the era. I was kinda shocked at the maturity of the young women in the ads, and the acceptance of women who demanded respect and spoke of independence and rights - the idea was so mainstream they were in the actual ads! The songs of the day, the tv shows of the day, all were on message (a good message) of respect for women and for each other. It's very different now.
The other reasons, are varied. For one thing, the discomfort with black people as the "other" was much worse back then. It's one thing to bring a mature Sidney to dinner, but what about younger, more threatening black male? So the age difference was probably necessary.
And yes, back then it was common for women to look toward men as support mechanisms and head of households, not as soulmates. So it seemed perfectly normal to have a much older spouse. As far as letchery and dating much younger women and all that....those things were not discussed openly, and therefore, they did not exist. If uncle wanted to bounce you on his knee even though you were 12 and way past that as appropriate, no one said a thing. Because molestation just didn't exist, just as incest didn't exist, wife battery didn't exist, etc.

Folks, it's the difference in POWER.
And class.
The elephant in the room that people like to talk about even less than race.

That IS perfectly normal. Its a 14 year age difference. No biggie. I've known plenty of average couples where the husband is about that much older than the wife. Slow news day here?

I had the same view when I first saw that movie. Me and my friend (same age, 26 now, then 22) both couldn't figure out why the parents were freaking out over the inter-racial thing but not the "we just met two weeks ago and now we're getting married" thing. I mean, we understood the culture at the time, but still.
Made the movie almost unwatchable.
