GravatarIt had been many years since I felt that low. I think the last time was during the week before Nixon finally resigned. Then I feared he would engineer a military coup.

But in 2000, I watched a different kind of coup.

GravatarI remember it took a very long time before the media picked up on Watergate, then they mostly ignored Iran-Contra, and then the media aided & facilitated the vote 2000 debacle.

GravatarSaid before and I'll say again, I will regret for the rest of this and likely many other lifetimes not rioting in the street. I do. I regret it.

GravatarDon't want to live through it again.

I have all the paper and magazine clippings I could possibly collect squirrelled away somewhere. At the time, I almost knew too much about the fiasco.

GravatarDemocratic Black Caucus pleading for a senator to sponsor ...

yeah one after another they stepped up and did the right thing, but not a single Senator had a spine.

GravatarThe Clinton impeachment felt like a coup attempt to me. Florida looked like the successful second try. The creeping continues. Another Nixon legacy.

GravatarGore won Florida. I hope no one here disputes that fact. I can prove it, again, and again, and again.

Gravatar". I even kept turning off CNN today when they were showing clips."

i couldn't force myself to even watch the interviews of the actors that have been on teevee of late. it's like a kick in the stomach.

GravatarI'm still in shock. Watching that windy scene as reporters leafed through the brief(*insert correct legal word here), trying to figure out what the supreme court decision was, and basically looking up with a shrug of "that's it, it's over."

And immediately after I conjure that image, I see damn bush in his hotel room election night with the fucking bandaid on his nose.

GravatarCoT, that excerpt from the Clinton speech you posted downstairs was something else. I'm not sure what she is talking about anymore. Doesn't sound like the same person I was listening to six months ago.

GravatarAnd, here's a little reminder of what we lost.

GravatarI remember Dan Abrams - he was the first one to report on the SCOTUS decision that I remember - and he was truly upset; shocked, even. He was on the steps of the Supreme Court.

GravatarI will regret for the rest of this and likely many other lifetimes not rioting in the street. I do. I regret it.

Who knew they'd go as far in their abuses of power as they did, fuck up as much as they have, since taking power?

Nobody.

You have the benefit of hindsight now. Don't be too hard on yourself about it.

GravatarBush v Gore, to me, is the most shameful part of the whole thing. The role of SCOTUS was so trespassed upon. Could have just not taken cert and let the Florida courts do their job, as, people forget, they generally were. A dark blot on the court.

GravatarI remember Dan Abrams - he was the first one to report on the SCOTUS decision that I remember - and he was truly upset; shocked, even. He was on the steps of the Supreme Court.
Vicki, Who ♥ Al Gore

I think at first he said he thought the decision sent the case back to Florida.

GravatarI know exactly how you feel. I can't decide to watch it or if it's too painful.

I created a website in 1999, and was already a liberal democratic activist - trying to wean myself off it, actually - then of course 2000, I knew it was going go be bad.

The term itself, "recount" is a killer, like we Gore wants to keep counting until he wins, heh heh heh..

I understand the movie is probably sympathetic to our view, but somehow that doesn't help. Are we doomed to be proven right 5 years later again, and again, and again, and again????

GravatarKid's plane's in flight and she's over Brighton about now...I guess it's time to head out and pick her up.

And damn! I thread I'd love to chat on.

That's life.

Peace out, moonbats. Maybe later.

GravatarAnd it's not over yet. There's still some 240 days left until Bush is supposed to leave office, plenty of time to bomb Iran or engineer a national "emergency" and somehow hang on to power. The lesson of the last eight years? There's absolutely no bottom to the depths which Republicans, conservatives, evangelicals neocons and the rest of their ilk will descend to.

GravatarYou have the benefit of hindsight now. Don't be too hard on yourself about it.
SteveNS

Not to mention the adminstration cares not a bit about millions of protesters.

GravatarThe first fatal mistake was when Gore conceded too soon. It's difficult to "take it back." I thought Kerry would understand that, but he didn't. I hope to hell that Obama does.

GravatarWe've got the Tivo set at the Pink House. Most folks are going to Pink the concert (inc. Gladys Knight) on the West Lawn, but I'm staying home--too tired.

GravatarAs I've said, the fact that Congress didn't immediately impeach O'Connor, Kennedy, Scalia, Rehnquist and Thomas for throwing the election sort of put in perspective just how far down the tubes the country has gone.

That's a measure of just how much the government has changed since Nixon's resignation.

Gravatarshould be getting Cruise stage separation confirmation soon

GravatarThe lesson of the last eight years? There's absolutely no bottom to the depths which Republicans, conservatives, evangelicals neocons and the rest of their ilk will descend to.

GravatarAs I've said, the fact that Congress didn't immediately impeach O'Connor, Kennedy, Scalia, Rehnquist and Thomas for throwing the election sort of put in perspective just how far down the tubes the country has gone.

Easier solution: finding one goddamned Senator to joining the House Black Caucus in protesting the fucking Electoral Votes...

GravatarYou have the benefit of hindsight now. Don't be too hard on yourself about it.

It did not happen ad hoc that all those paid GOP operatives suddenly appeared in Florida to demand the recount be stopped. Next time we'll know better.

GravatarIt did not happen ad hoc that all those paid GOP operatives suddenly appeared in Florida to demand the recount be stopped. Next time we'll know better.

Gravatar
A friend recently told me that right after Chimpy's inauguration I said it felt like a dark cloud had descended on the country and something really terrible was going to happen.

My feelings weren't quite as bad, but I did have a sense of forboding, particular given the insanity that the GOPers had put the country through during the impeachment days.

I really started to say "oh oh" when the twits decided to revive Reagan's missile defense plans. At that point, it became clear that Bushco was as nutty as any of the GOPers in congress.

That said, I think the darkest moment for me was the 2004 election. Bush wins, and the GOPers get more seats in congress. I really wondered if the country was going to survive for another four years. To be honest, I still wonder if we're going to make it to 2009 without a complete economic collapse.

GravatarNot to mention the adminstration cares not a bit about millions of protesters.

I'm not talking about "protesting." I'm going to have to explain to my ancestors someday why I sat around and watched a junta assume power completely bloodlessly. I'm not looking forward to it; I have ancestors who died to protect American democracy and I sat in front of a tv and felt bad. Never again. It's like what we witches say about the Burning Times: Never again, the Burning Times. I won't let them steal it again w/o making them at least arrest me.

GravatarThis "60 Minutes" report on "Millennials" may be the stupidest and most pointless thing I've ever seen on TV.

GravatarAlternately, the lesson could be that we need to step UP as they descend...

GravatarRight on! I could not even read the review in today's Ft. Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel, and I have assiduously hit the remote at any mention of "Recount," even when, for instance, D. Leary came on the Daily Show. I lived & voted in Dade & worked in Broward in 2000. The day started w/ mass confusion at my precinct (on the border of the Hastings & Shaw[I think] district); big turnout, insufficient machines, ballot irregularities, clueless poll workers, etc. Then, the locals, esp. the Palm Beach butterfly-ballot people, began calling in to local talk (Neil Rogers & Randi Rhodes, especially); hosts at first thought they were being cranked but by around 2:30 or 3:00 p.m. it became apparent that there was a mass pro-republican cluster-fuck underway.
The next however-many-days were feverish--big migraines, arguments with the fascists at work [by the way, we all knew the bug-eyed chad-counter], despair, fear, rage - - you know the drill.
But I also want to agree re the blogosphere--The Trauma was what led me to begin for the first time to surf the net, looking for the (then unnamed) DFH-perspective. I found you, Doctor Blue, and your ilk. While this discovery did not lessen my bile at that time, it did help firm up my then-dormant leftyism. I have grown with, learned much from, and been comforted or challenged by you, Kos & the usual gang of idiots over the past eight years. I guess that's my unwanted-but-now-appreciated silver lining to the Electoral Coup's cloud - - - But I still ain't watching Recount or reading about it!! Living it here in SoFla was enough drama for me.

GravatarThe only way this won't happen again is the Dem gets a landslide.

And I don't think the race for the WH will be a landslide. I think the Dem will win, but, based on current polls, not by a landslide. And Obama's swiftboating is just getting started.

Gravatarthanks montag. I'm on stone age rabbit ears here.

GravatarIt might have been different had Kerry called for people to come and help force a recount instead of telling us to all go fuck ourselves because he couldn't be bothered not to quit.

I gave Kerry a lot of turkee, at least for a single old woman. The day before the election, I heard reports that he had planes of lawyers fueled up and sitting on the runway, ready to go. I went to my altar and cried with relief. Then, he did nothing. I'll never believe it was anything but warrantless domestic spying because nothing els explains it to me. But it made me wish that I'd saved my money for land in the middle of Canada for G/Son.

GravatarI listened to it.

CNN, back in those medieval days of the internets, had a live audio stream that I followed from the UK.

And I still remember the gut-punch of the Supremos shutting down the count.

It took until Fahrenheit 911 to bring it back. It's curious that while the taboo on replaying 9/11 footage is fading, there's still one on showing footage of the recount, the bourgeois riot, the Freepers and GOPeratives outside the Naval Observatory, the horrors of Katherine Harris.

It has to be shown in dramatic form.

Why? Because it was a fucking coup, and Americans can't afford to have that sink in.

Seriously, when you hear the stories coming out of Zimbabwe, you get the feeling that Robert Mugabe must have taken notes.

GravatarSHE'S ON A MISSION FROM GOD

Clinton speaks of faith in face of adversity

Associated Press - HORMIGUEROS, Puerto Rico

Hillary Rodham Clinton on Sunday offered a spiritual defense for continuing her presidential campaign, as she sought to put to rest the uproar over her comments about the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy.

Speaking to a full congregation at the Pabellon de la Victoria evangelical church, Clinton spoke in measured terms about faith in the face of adversity.

"There isn't anything we cannot do together if we seek God's blessing and if we stay committed and are not deterred by the setbacks that often fall in every life," Clinton said.

Clinton spoke of her determination to stay in the race despite trailing Illinois Sen. Obama by nearly 200 delegates.

"If I had listened to those who had been talking over the last several months we would not be having this campaign in Puerto Rico today," she said, alluding to calls during the past few months for her to drop out of the race and support Obama.

"But I believe this is an opportunity unlike any in recent history for the needs and interests and diversity of the people of Puerto Rico to be in the spotlight. This is an opportunity to educate everyone about this wonderful place," Clinton said.

GravatarI was pretty deep in my career + family life back then and must admit I was kinda out of it. I wanted Gore to win but didn't follow what happened after election night very well. I was pretty pissed at Nader for being such an ass during the election, and still am, but didn't appreciate the shenanigans going on.

We were robbed, with media complicity. It is really hard to believe, even now.

GravatarI grew even more angry when I learned that he was sitting on millions of dollars in donations that he had continued to beg for right up to election day.

Me, too. I wanted him to fight like hell and at least make it completely clear that it WAS stolen, and it was. If you make African Americans in Ohio stand in line for 12 hours, when they have to leave and go to work, you're stealing it. They stole it. And Kerry did nothing and we did nothing. Never again. They may steal it again, but they'll have to steal it over my pitchfork.

GravatarBy how much did GA go for Bush in 2004 and 2000?

Much. But rigging the election there in 2002 -- Cleland and Barnes -- is what really cemented the GOPpers in GA.

GravatarI remember the day after the election, Bush was photograph striding somewhere, doing his gunfighter thing, with his "transition team." He didn't waste time fucking about, looking like he gived a shit. He sat down and took a meeting.

they hardly need to scrub it away,as Bush filed suit and stole the election. Scrubbing away the GOP is what is happening, finally. The GOP is trash, and is to be dumped in the nearest toxic waste disposal site. It's members are walking trash, especially the cowards like AH who refuse to fight for their "principles". if there were a liberal media, Bush wouldn't have been able to get a White House tour. GravatarBy 2000 I have been a Dem activist for 15 years -- really it just seemed like the media was determined to defeat Gore. Do I sound bitter? Yeah, well.

I told people in 2004 that Kerry was "a fighter" - in fairness to me he gave that impression.

As regards Obama, I really believe he is not the type to give up easily. As person of that nature would not even have run in 2008, as young as he is.

Hillary has practically run her whole campaign as "not Gore or Kerry" so I assume she would fight a recount, but she is also a triangulator. Anyway we've learned some lessons since 2000 and 04, I think.

GravatarOT on my own post, but I was browsing netflix today and their library of stuff you can just stream to your computer is pretty large. Not the best way to watch things, but quite a few british tv shows and other things where it wouldn't be so bad.

Just as you promised to kill yourself, but missed. Oh well, my tuba plays in tune, unlike your insane lies and shrill cowardice.

Gravatar"Hello. You have reached the Mars Lander. Your call is very important to us...

I was thinking the other day how phrases like that one have been cheapened by being used on artificial voices. It doesn't mean anything, but then omitting it means something. So instead of feeling that my call is very important I feel that it's blah or that it's fuckoff.

Gravatartoo bad we have to wait 90 minutes for the first piccies.

GravatarI'd rather see that nose of his explode. But that's just me.

he did, you fucking moron. He won. Shame on ou for your ignorance.

GravatarIs there anything else the house really needs? I can go by the store tomorrow and drop you back at the house after dinner.

Doesn't appear to be right now, thanks. I'd asked yesterday and Des couldn't think of anything. I think I'm going to try bringing an extra mountain bike--the 10 speed is a bit rickety. Otherwise just love and good spells...

GravatarEVEN JANET THINKS GORE WON

which means, of course, that K-Lo parodies can't be far behind.

GravatarThat's apparently what McCain is counting on: the electoral college. A Dem majority should give the vote to DC and get rid of the electoral college. Then the fairness doctrine. Then eliminate "faith based" funding. IMHO.

I hope that you're right. I've seen zero evidence of it, yet, but I hope to hell that you're right and that some Wormwood isn't whispering in his ear that he's young and if he gives up gracefully now he can run again. I've got zero evidence for it, but I sure hope that it's true.

No.

this has been another edition etc.

10-Creating more enemies for the US.
11-The death of US soldiers over lies.
12-Outing CIA agents.
13-Vote caging.

Gravatarwww.mars.xxx

GravatarAs regards Obama, I really believe he is not the type to give up easily. As person of that nature would not even have run in 2008, as young as he is.

Hillary has practically run her whole campaign as "not Gore or Kerry" so I assume she would fight a recount, but she is also a triangulator. Anyway we've learned some lessons since 2000 and 04, I think.
Culture of TrÜth

My primary problem with Obama has been and remains that I have yet to see the evidence that he will take the fight to the GOP. I hope he does, I want to believe he will, I understand the argument that he has to win first etc., but I am not in any mood politically to give anyone the benefit of the doubt. The have-not group in this country has grown considerably larger in the past 8 years and all indications are they are goddamn angry. Not cranky, not irritable, not scared - 100% had efuckingnough ready to blow a gasket.

I'm just saying I'd like to hear a little more recognition of that fact coming from the Dems over the next several months.

GravatarHBO's showing their dramatization of the 2000 post-election fiasco this evening. They were kind enough to send me a screener, but ultimately I just couldn't watch it. I even kept turning off CNN today when they were showing clips.

I can't imagine why anyone who was sentient and paying attention in real time would want to watch that. Masochism much?

On the other hand, folks who are adults now but who were 12 years old back then might learn something.

But let's face it: the key names and faces to remember are those paid white Repuke fucks who showed up in Miami to pretend to defend democracy. They are highlighted in this video

I may be a naive partaker of the Kool-Aid but I really think Michelle has made it abundantly clear that this is the only shot you get, buster, if you want to stay married to me and live in the same house with your children.

One of the first things Sam Powers said when I heard her a few months back was that this was NOT an opportune time for the Obamas to undertake a Presidential campaign. She cited that MLK phrase: "the fierce urgency of now."

I believed her. Others will surely demur.

Gravatar"57"

well, he might as well be. Your fucking moron loser can't get shit done that isn't destructive to the country. imagine, letting Al Qaeda take down the WTC and the PENTAGON. What kind of fucking asshole lets 5 guys with knives take out the Pentagon? Guess what, lubby, you don't have a POTUS. You have a half-witted traitor with Cheney's hand up his ass. Albert Gore would never have allowed the attacks of 9/11, nor the disaster of NOLA, nor the escape of Bin Laden, nor the surrender to the Saudis. gah. probably the single most disgusting thing for me: i gave a presentation at the city democratic club, asking for volunteers. a number of people, including several councilmen, offered to help. ( i think they only stood up at the meeting to be seen as loyal dems). number of people there that knocked on a single door for JK? Z-e-r-o.

Gravatar...oh wait, that's the Jet Propulsion Lab.

I was thinking they must have received a great deal from Best Buy on monitors and shirts.

GravatarWho here married an Alsatian?

GravatarThat whole saga was just really traumatic.

Agreed. It's like watching a movie about J.F.K. and knowing how badly it will all end. It's probably a terrific movie (Laura Dern as Katherine "Tits McGee" Harris; inspired casting), but I can't relive it. It's still too raw.

GravatarHoly shit Colin Powell is on PBS

Gravatarwe can commiserate? - jdw

Yes.

I arrived in Columbus, and went to the Kerry HQ to sign in and volunteer. They told me they had all the volunteers they needed. My jaw hit the floor. (Then a guy who was standing there said "go talk to these people", and I ended up across town.)

It didn't get better. (We have all the volunteers we need. Can you imagine?)

GravatarYeah, in your strange, imbecilic parallel universe Albert Gore, Jr., is POTUS.

That would be in the un- Bizarro universe, unlike the one universe we currently occupy.

GravatarBet you had a v busy day today! Witches loved the 2004 Pouilly-Fuissé I got from you.
Hecate, Runnymeade Conspirator

Drink a toast to the late Mme. Ferret!

I have her top-of-the-line 2002 in the back room if you decide you want to splurge for a special occasion some time. It's 59.99 which is a ton for a Pouilly-Fuisse, but it's just about as good as white Burgundy gets.

I am also getting (probably) a couple of cases of magnums of 2004 Bourgogne Blanc from Bzikot... the vineyards for this wine are a stone's throw (literally) from Puligny-Montrachet and the wine (which I had at Belga the other day) is a dead ringer for an excellent Puligny. It'll probably be around 44.99 for the 1.5 liter bottle... mags are great fun for entertaining.

I was busy today, mowing the lawn and grocery shopping. No store-time for me, though.

GravatarIt's so fun to visit here and read comments from mentally challenged morons like Lubyanka, Tubby Petznoid, pud and Bugs.

Just watching them try so hard to come across as having just a thimble full of intelligence is breath taking and very theraputical.

GravatarWell, PHOENIX has landed. All looks nominal.

I need to run (metaphorically) to the market to grab some supplies.

Geeks and nerds made this possible. MY PEOPLE, MY TRIBE.

The trolls can barely reboot
their Windows 95 machines. Let alone even imagine doing something this magnificent.

Trolls! Your day is done. Tomorrow belongs to US.

And tomorrow dawns bright on January 20, 2009, with these words:

"I, Barack Hussein Obama, do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. So help me God!"

Suck. On. THAT!

GravatarAm I too late to tell you that Scalia thinks you should just get over it?

And he's the smartest guy on the Bench, so he must be right. I mean, everybody tells me how smart he is, and despite the fact I see no evidence of it at all (except for grades in school, which mean absolutely nothing about brains), and the fact that we praise "intelligence" (which we can't define) while we denigrate "wisdom" (which we only praise in retrospect, and long after the "wise person" is safely dead), everybody still says so, so who am I to argue?

So he must be right. You should just get over it.

Besides, it was Nixon in '72 for me, so I've had a longer time to adjust.....

GravatarI have about as much interest in watching this as a 9/11 movie. Too awful to watch. I still remember all the hope I felt when Gore postponed his speech the night of the election like it was last night.

GravatarLet's just move on, what's the worst that could happen?

Gravatargod damn coup

GravatarAtrios, your words are what Eric Alterman wrote this past Friday:

You need to be made of stronger stuff than yours truly to watch Recount. I'm sure it's great, but I'm going to hold off until we inaugurate President Obama and I can stand to look back on it.

http://mediamatters.org/altercat.../ 200805230004#3

GravatarGlad it's not just me. As passionate as I was, and still am, about the 2000 coup, revisiting it via a made for TV special just feels like a kick to the gut. Partially because I have absolutely zero trust in the media to tell the story right.

GravatarSo Laura Dern as Harris: Quel élancement!
Does that mean she has had a breast enhancement?
Fly-fornication Moscowitz | 05.25.08 - 7:49 pm | #

Not to mention the acting exercises she had to do to prepare herself to use only 1% of her brain in order to capture the essence of Katherine Harris.

GravatarAm I too late to tell you that Scalia thinks you should just get over it?

Not if I am not too late to tell Scalia that he is a fascist piece of shit and that I hope his end is long, excruciating and impoverishes his family for several generations.

He is a disgraceful, motherfucking son of a bitch.

GravatarI'd just like to pipe in that I can attest that the 2000 post-election horrorshow was my introduction to the left internet, through MotherJones actually. They had a thing called the Bush Files, which I think actually started before the election, but really blossomed after. It was, basically, a clearing house of links to other alternative media sources about Bush current events. So it led me to such places as tompaine, commondreams, thenation, alternet, TAP, counterpunch, consortiumnews, etc. I believe I also found TPM through MotherJones. The Bush Files continued until shortly after 9/11. By then, I had drifted away to other sources on my own. I can't remember how I got here. I found dKos the night of the 2004 election, and started posting the following day.

GravatarYou are so right about this. It was the time in history when I realized that there was no friendly port--when I realized we weren't just the bad guys, we wanted to be the worst guys in order to prove we were the good guys.

I was a journalism major in the early '80's and the idea of responsible reporting was a mental safe haven for me until Gore conceded. Now, of course, the news biz is an obscene travesty; in fact, it accomplishes the exact opposite of what it's supposed to do. Reagan would be proud.

The only thing that makes me hang on is knowing that the rich sociopaths who've taken over the planet can't understand why we all don't just hold hands and jump off a cliff. Knowing you're fucked doesn't mean you have to act like you're fucked.

Gravatartellybelly,

What in the Sam Hill did Scalia ever do to you? You seem awfully upset about something.

GravatarTHAT was your moment of realization? Were you asleep during the period for which I coined the terms "The Starr Scandal" and "L'Affaire Lewinsky"????

Andrea Mitchell on camera "phoning in" Clinton-attacking reports that consist of nothing but the right-wing Republican talking points that morning, talking about what "people" think without herself having a clue, looking sleep-eyed and lazy, a smug, do-nothing reporter on some cushy beat, like "foreign correspondents" who do nothing but pick up the morning paper in London or wherever and then parrot a few news headlines back at the camera for the edification of the American public....

GravatarWhat in the Sam Hill did Scalia ever do to you?

Simple answers to good questions:
Bush v. Gore.

But, technically, he did that to all of us.

GravatarAll Hail Media Whores Online!

Gravatarthis is pretty morbid...but like OJ's defense team there seems to have been alot of tragedies visiting the Bush Team that got him in office.

Ted Olson - who argued the case - lost his wife in 9/11, James Baker's 9 year old granddaughter was drowned by being sucked into a pool drain, the amount of staff that has had to resign under scandal...all the while Gore's life has gotten amazingly better.

It just seems like slowly, karma is coming to visit all of them in really unusual ways...

GravatarAgreed Atrios. I can't watch it either and I avoid any of the promos on TV about it.

GravatarJoe, You're a sick fuck. Why don't you join FreeRepublic where that kind of sickening garbage is appreciated. Kindly fuck off and die.
