It had been many years since I felt that low. I think the last time was during the week before Nixon finally resigned. Then I feared he would engineer a military coup.
But in 2000, I watched a different kind of coup.

A friend recently told me that right after Chimpy's inauguration I said it felt like a dark cloud had descended on the country and something really terrible was going to happen.
My feelings weren't quite as bad, but I did have a sense of forboding, particular given the insanity that the GOPers had put the country through during the impeachment days.
I really started to say "oh oh" when the twits decided to revive Reagan's missile defense plans. At that point, it became clear that Bushco was as nutty as any of the GOPers in congress.
That said, I think the darkest moment for me was the 2004 election. Bush wins, and the GOPers get more seats in congress. I really wondered if the country was going to survive for another four years. To be honest, I still wonder if we're going to make it to 2009 without a complete economic collapse.

Right on! I could not even read the review in today's Ft. Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel, and I have assiduously hit the remote at any mention of "Recount," even when, for instance, D. Leary came on the Daily Show. I lived & voted in Dade & worked in Broward in 2000. The day started w/ mass confusion at my precinct (on the border of the Hastings & Shaw[I think] district); big turnout, insufficient machines, ballot irregularities, clueless poll workers, etc. Then, the locals, esp. the Palm Beach butterfly-ballot people, began calling in to local talk (Neil Rogers & Randi Rhodes, especially); hosts at first thought they were being cranked but by around 2:30 or 3:00 p.m. it became apparent that there was a mass pro-republican cluster-fuck underway.
The next however-many-days were feverish--big migraines, arguments with the fascists at work [by the way, we all knew the bug-eyed chad-counter], despair, fear, rage - - you know the drill.
But I also want to agree re the blogosphere--The Trauma was what led me to begin for the first time to surf the net, looking for the (then unnamed) DFH-perspective. I found you, Doctor Blue, and your ilk. While this discovery did not lessen my bile at that time, it did help firm up my then-dormant leftyism. I have grown with, learned much from, and been comforted or challenged by you, Kos & the usual gang of idiots over the past eight years. I guess that's my unwanted-but-now-appreciated silver lining to the Electoral Coup's cloud - - - But I still ain't watching Recount or reading about it!! Living it here in SoFla was enough drama for me.

CNN, back in those medieval days of the internets, had a live audio stream that I followed from the UK.
And I still remember the gut-punch of the Supremos shutting down the count.
It took until Fahrenheit 911 to bring it back. It's curious that while the taboo on replaying 9/11 footage is fading, there's still one on showing footage of the recount, the bourgeois riot, the Freepers and GOPeratives outside the Naval Observatory, the horrors of Katherine Harris.
It has to be shown in dramatic form.
Why? Because it was a fucking coup, and Americans can't afford to have that sink in.
Seriously, when you hear the stories coming out of Zimbabwe, you get the feeling that Robert Mugabe must have taken notes.

SHE'S ON A MISSION FROM GOD
Clinton speaks of faith in face of adversity
Associated Press - HORMIGUEROS, Puerto Rico
Hillary Rodham Clinton on Sunday offered a spiritual defense for continuing her presidential campaign, as she sought to put to rest the uproar over her comments about the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy.
Speaking to a full congregation at the Pabellon de la Victoria evangelical church, Clinton spoke in measured terms about faith in the face of adversity.
"There isn't anything we cannot do together if we seek God's blessing and if we stay committed and are not deterred by the setbacks that often fall in every life," Clinton said.
Clinton spoke of her determination to stay in the race despite trailing Illinois Sen. Obama by nearly 200 delegates.
"If I had listened to those who had been talking over the last several months we would not be having this campaign in Puerto Rico today," she said, alluding to calls during the past few months for her to drop out of the race and support Obama.
"But I believe this is an opportunity unlike any in recent history for the needs and interests and diversity of the people of Puerto Rico to be in the spotlight. This is an opportunity to educate everyone about this wonderful place," Clinton said.

Me, too. I wanted him to fight like hell and at least make it completely clear that it WAS stolen, and it was. If you make African Americans in Ohio stand in line for 12 hours, when they have to leave and go to work, you're stealing it. They stole it. And Kerry did nothing and we did nothing. Never again. They may steal it again, but they'll have to steal it over my pitchfork.

American Hawk | 05.25.08 - 7:54 pm | #
they hardly need to scrub it away,as Bush filed suit and stole the election. Scrubbing away the GOP is what is happening, finally. The GOP is trash, and is to be dumped in the nearest toxic waste disposal site. It's members are walking trash, especially the cowards like AH who refuse to fight for their "principles". if there were a liberal media, Bush wouldn't have been able to get a White House tour. By 2000 I have been a Dem activist for 15 years -- really it just seemed like the media was determined to defeat Gore. Do I sound bitter? Yeah, well.
I told people in 2004 that Kerry was "a fighter" - in fairness to me he gave that impression.
As regards Obama, I really believe he is not the type to give up easily. As person of that nature would not even have run in 2008, as young as he is.
Hillary has practically run her whole campaign as "not Gore or Kerry" so I assume she would fight a recount, but she is also a triangulator. Anyway we've learned some lessons since 2000 and 04, I think.

My primary problem with Obama has been and remains that I have yet to see the evidence that he will take the fight to the GOP. I hope he does, I want to believe he will, I understand the argument that he has to win first etc., but I am not in any mood politically to give anyone the benefit of the doubt. I arrived in Columbus, and went to the Kerry HQ to sign in and volunteer. They told me they had all the volunteers they needed. My jaw hit the floor. (Then a guy who was standing there said "go talk to these people", and I ended up across town.)
It didn't get better. (We have all the volunteers we need. Can you imagine?)

Yeah, in your strange, imbecilic parallel universe Albert Gore, Jr., is POTUS.
That would be in the un- Bizarro universe, unlike the one universe we currently occupy.

Bet you had a v busy day today! Witches loved the 2004 Pouilly-Fuissé I got from you.
Hecate, Runnymeade Conspirator
Drink a toast to the late Mme. Ferret!
I have her top-of-the-line 2002 in the back room if you decide you want to splurge for a special occasion some time. It's 59.99 which is a ton for a Pouilly-Fuisse, but it's just about as good as white Burgundy gets.
I am also getting (probably) a couple of cases of magnums of 2004 Bourgogne Blanc from Bzikot... the vineyards for this wine are a stone's throw (literally) from Puligny-Montrachet and the wine (which I had at Belga the other day) is a dead ringer for an excellent Puligny. It'll probably be around 44.99 for the 1.5 liter bottle... mags are great fun for entertaining.
I was busy today, mowing the lawn and grocery shopping. No store-time for me, though.

It's so fun to visit here and read comments from mentally challenged morons like Lubyanka, Tubby Petznoid, pud and Bugs.
Just watching them try so hard to come across as having just a thimble full of intelligence is breath taking and very theraputical.

Well, PHOENIX has landed. All looks nominal.
I need to run (metaphorically) to the market to grab some supplies.
Geeks and nerds made this possible. MY PEOPLE, MY TRIBE.
The trolls can barely reboot their Windows 95 machines. Let alone even imagine doing something this magnificent.
Trolls! Your day is done. Tomorrow belongs to US.
And tomorrow dawns bright on January 20, 2009, with these words:
"I, Barack Hussein Obama, do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. So help me God!"
Am I too late to tell you that Scalia thinks you should just get over it?
And he's the smartest guy on the Bench, so he must be right. I mean, everybody tells me how smart he is, and despite the fact I see no evidence of it at all (except for grades in school, which mean absolutely nothing about brains), and the fact that we praise "intelligence" (which we can't define) while we denigrate "wisdom" (which we only praise in retrospect, and long after the "wise person" is safely dead), everybody still says so, so who am I to argue?
So he must be right. You should just get over it.
Besides, it was Nixon in '72 for me, so I've had a longer time to adjust.....

I have about as much interest in watching this as a 9/11 movie. Too awful to watch. I still remember all the hope I felt when Gore postponed his speech the night of the election like it was last night.

Atrios, your words are what Eric Alterman wrote this past Friday:
You need to be made of stronger stuff than yours truly to watch Recount. I'm sure it's great, but I'm going to hold off until we inaugurate President Obama and I can stand to look back on it.
Glad it's not just me. As passionate as I was, and still am, about the 2000 coup, revisiting it via a made for TV special just feels like a kick to the gut. Partially because I have absolutely zero trust in the media to tell the story right.

So Laura Dern as Harris: Quel élancement!
Does that mean she has had a breast enhancement?

Not to mention the acting exercises she had to do to prepare herself to use only 1% of her brain in order to capture the essence of Katherine Harris.

Am I too late to tell you that Scalia thinks you should just get over it?
Not if I am not too late to tell Scalia that he is a fascist piece of shit and that I hope his end is long, excruciating and impoverishes his family for several generations.
He is a disgraceful, motherfucking son of a bitch.

I'd just like to pipe in that I can attest that the 2000 post-election horrorshow was my introduction to the left internet, through MotherJones actually. They had a thing called the Bush Files, which I think actually started before the election, but really blossomed after. It was, basically, a clearing house of links to other alternative media sources about Bush current events. So it led me to such places as tompaine, commondreams, thenation, alternet, TAP, counterpunch, consortiumnews, etc. I believe I also found TPM through MotherJones. The Bush Files continued until shortly after 9/11. By then, I had drifted away to other sources on my own. I can't remember how I got here. I found dKos the night of the 2004 election, and started posting the following day.

You are so right about this. It was the time in history when I realized that there was no friendly port--when I realized we weren't just the bad guys, we wanted to be the worst guys in order to prove we were the good guys.
I was a journalism major in the early '80's and the idea of responsible reporting was a mental safe haven for me until Gore conceded. Now, of course, the news biz is an obscene travesty; in fact, it accomplishes the exact opposite of what it's supposed to do. Reagan would be proud.
The only thing that makes me hang on is knowing that the rich sociopaths who've taken over the planet can't understand why we all don't just hold hands and jump off a cliff. Knowing you're fucked doesn't mean you have to act like you're fucked.

What in the Sam Hill did Scalia ever do to you? You seem awfully upset about something.

THAT was your moment of realization? Were you asleep during the period for which I coined the terms "The Starr Scandal" and "L'Affaire Lewinsky"????
Andrea Mitchell on camera "phoning in" Clinton-attacking reports that consist of nothing but the right-wing Republican talking points that morning, talking about what "people" think without herself having a clue, looking sleep-eyed and lazy, a smug, do-nothing reporter on some cushy beat, like "foreign correspondents" who do nothing but pick up the morning paper in London or wherever and then parrot a few news headlines back at the camera for the edification of the American public....

Simple answers to good questions: Bush v. Gore.
But, technically, he did that to all of us.

this is pretty morbid...but like OJ's defense team there seems to have been alot of tragedies visiting the Bush Team that got him in office.
Ted Olson - who argued the case - lost his wife in 9/11, James Baker's 9 year old granddaughter was drowned by being sucked into a pool drain, the amount of staff that has had to resign under scandal...all the while Gore's life has gotten amazingly better.
It just seems like slowly, karma is coming to visit all of them in really unusual ways...
