I think it's more the "liberal media." The "liberal media" that turned Gore from boy scout to big fat liar, Kerry from vet to coward, Cleland from vet to osama luver, ect, ect.

Depends on what statistical sampling corrections the various pollsters apply. The number of self identified Republicans has probably gone down so the responses probably get juiced to the supposed norm of 40%

GravatarIf the conspiracy theorists are right and George has the dirt on the democratic leaders or followers. Time to get rid of them and get new ones in, no questions asked. If they are that dirty, they don't need to be there in the first place. They certainly aren't doing any good anyway.

Even if the conspiracy theorists aren't right, its still a good plan

Not the media originating, but acting as megaphone for the GOP. Something the Democrats still fear, despite the fact almost no one in America is listening to the GOP or their megaphone.

Otherwise, Bush would not be at 24%, and the majority of Americans would not want us out of Iraq now.

Well, it certainly is a manly package indicator...

GravatarThere's no blackmail on the Congressional leadership needed.

The constant conciliation is being done on purpose. I don't like it, but it's working as planned.

By the election the US economy will be in shambles, Iraq will have flared up again, and Democrats in the Congress will say "this is entirely the Republicans' fault, we gave them exactly what they demanded of us."

Of course, that message won't get out, because the major cable news networks will be pointing out how it all happened under "Democrat" leadership and we need a strong voice for change, like McCain.

Now, wanna hear my theory on why the Armed Forces are being deliberately broken, or shall I save that?

All the whining and hand-wringing about the Democratic candidates for president is all but beside the point. Bush has been able to pass nearly all of his legislative agenda because he has had congresses that either agree with him or disagree and give him his way anyway.

The public needs a Congress that is representative of the public's policy positions and that will push the Executive, regardless of who is in the White House. So I think the upcoming congressional elections are more important than the presidential race.

GravatarHi Dianne

There are probably some good candidates out there now ready to challenge the status quo. They just have an uphill battle because the incumbents have name recognition.

The constant conciliation is being done on purpose. I don't like it, but it's working as planned.

I'm coming to believe that the Democratic leadership in Congress isn't being played or "ritually humiliated," as Atrios said, so much as they are playing the Democratic base by saying they disagree with Bush and will stand up to him, when in fact they agree with his policy positions.

There are a few exceptions, such as Dodd, of course.

What would be nice is if the Wellstone Foundation had enough money to start looking for those kind of candidates.

That is called desperation!!!! The media wants desperately for the democratic party to split up, so they have been playing this to the hilt. I don't think the democrats are going to split. Not over this, not when you look at what the alternative is. Campaigns are very messy and mean. But this isn't going to split them apart. The party that is split is the republicans and neither they nor the media know how to deal with it. They are one trick ponies and they are trying to figure out what to do with the new reality. So the media keeps playing this "you aren't going to let him get away with that, are you Harold?" meme to try to force some kind of crisis that doesn't exist. This is just politics peole and the democratic party is stronger than it has been in years.

The media and the republicans are just absolutely desperate.

Three servals found in Seattle?

The elegant cats with long legs and graceful necks look like miniature cheetahs or leopards. They come from Africa and, like other exotic animals, are illegal to own in Seattle.

"You can't put a serval with another animal. You can't put them with a dog, a cat or monkey. Everything we have on this property is prey to a serval," said Miner.

"They can jump 15 feet straight up in the air. It means quite an enclosure is needed," she said. "They are incredible. They are very powerful animals.

SNIP
The first cat picked up three weeks ago was a young female. Baxter estimated that she was about 15 pounds underweight.

She was found under the porch of a house and walked right into the animal carrier when officers put it near the porch.

The second cat, a male, found last weekend on the schoolyard, was less cooperative. Animal control officers tried first to lure the cat into a carrier with some raw chicken, but he didn't take the bait. They ended up snagging him with a tool that resembles a lasso.

Here, kitty, kitty.

The male weighs an estimated 35 pounds. The cats can weigh up to 40 pounds.

I'm not sure that the democrats could, because by their very nature, liberals don't like moving in lock step and they have this crazy idea that other peoples ideas should be respected.

Maybe, maybe not. They want Hillary to win very badly and will do ANYTHING (just like Poppy Bush) to get the job done. At the same time the MSM want Hillary to win very badly and equally THEY will do anything to make that happen. Ever hear of yellow journalism or Randolph Hearst. At the beginning of the Spanish American war he sent a photographer out to get pictures of the war. The photographer wired him back and said not a lot going on, more like skirmishes. Randolph Hearst told him, you just get me the pictures, I'll get the war" (paraphrasing in the extreme).

So it could have been either the Clintons or the MSM or a combination of both. They are both working towards the same end right now. But that relationship won't last.

I knew these people who were smart, highly educated, really humane and good people. And they hated what Bush was doing in Iraq and to the US, and they voted for him anyway "to stop baby killing".

It's hard to understand.

GravatarAfternoon, Evening, or late morning to all.

Let's see: I will list five things that don't piss me off for a change.

My sister bought me this GE coffee maker that grinds the beans immediately before brewing the coffee. It really DOES make a difference. I like it very much.

The snow that fell this week is spectacularly beautiful. Not sullied at all by the world, just white softness covering a hard world. It looks as if someone went nuts with cotton balls.

I really am enjoying my Townes VanZandt. Interesting guy and interesting music: he had an interesting way of perceiving the world. (might be a book there someday - if I can ever write again)

Just had a wonderful lunch at a local restaurant. It was delicious and fairly reasonable for what it was.

I am enjoying my morning treadmill work. It seems to be getting easier and I am increasing both speed and duration. Hopefully this will strengthen my heart. I really do not want to die right away. . . .

But the Republicans suck and so do the Dems.

GravatarThere's a pretty standard campaign tactic (not implying anything about Clinton here) that when a black man is gaining on you start provoking the NAACP. White people hate the NAACP because it harshes their mellow, and all of a sudden that nice clean articulate black man now has huge negatives. Think Harold Ford Jr. here.

GravatarWhat have you got in mind?

GravatarThe number of schools introducing rifle ranges for pupils has surged since ministers backed shooting sports last year, say gun groups.

One local authority is reportedly seeking to introduce shooting at 16 of its schools, and an academy due to open in September in a deprived area of south Bristol is believed to be the first of the government's flagship schools to have an on-site shooting range.

The National Small-bore Rifle Association (NSRA) told the Guardian there had been a 6% rise in membership from schools since Richard Caborn, then sports minister, backed the sport last May.

Sponsors of the Merchants' Academy, in Bristol, said the sport "encourages discipline", but campaigners and teachers condemned the move, saying it sent the wrong message to children in inner-city areas affected by violent crime.

With official figures this week revealing a 4% year on year increase in gun crime, campaigners have called for a moratorium on gun sports in schools.

Geoff Doe, the NSRA's director of shooting, said discussions were under way with teachers in the Midlands about extending a pilot shooting scheme at one school to a total of 16

Gravatarhttp://openleft.com/showDiary.do...do? diaryId=3432

Matt Stoller description and impressions of final Hillary rally in SC.

There's one other point to note. While the blogosphere and the media have parallel conversations about race, identity, electability, etc, it's not like these things don't matter to voters. Voters are parroting these phrases, discussing who can win, who has more experience, who can bring change, who can attract independents and Republicans, etc. When you talk to low information voters, they tell you these things that started with Brian Williams, only it often feels like they are a foreigner learning English. It doesn't make sense but it has an impact. So since this is considered an incredibly hard fought and dirty campaign in the press even though it's not, that's how voters will perceive it.

Which is why we must continue to fight the MCM's bias.

It most certainly is, as hate is usually handed down from generation to generation.

GravatarDWD: sure, they probably believe that, but it doesn't mean they're right. I think either of them can do very well in the popular vote, but it would be much tighter in the electoral college.

I heard him speak last summer. He spoke well and passionately but something was missing, something, which the other candidates I heard (even Richardson) had. It's as if he doesn't want it badly enough or as if his charisma is not of the right type? This is very fuzzy and unscientific, but something about the way he played it didn't come across as leadership.

And it's precisely because I'm looking forward to supporting her if she is the nominee that I hate seeing her being overshadowed by her spouse and having her husband bigfoot the process which diminishes her and makes me think her presidency could be a 4 year soap opera where Bill won't shut up and let her have a shot at doing the job.

GravatarWhat kind of twisted sister thinks "family values" is "hate"?

Oh, right, a self-styled "progressive."

GravatarThey think they'd beat John Edwards, too.

I long ago called bullshit on this theory that the GOP is slobbering to run against X, Y, or Z so we better not elect whoever they tell us they want us not to or something. WTF is difficult to grasp about the fact that *their script does not change*?

GravatarEchidne,

Maybe they can beat Edwards but at least he would not be fighting uphill.

I have a really terrible feeling about this election. Even worse than last time. Everyone here seems cocky and sure: I am not. The media simply refuses to cover that which those in charge do not want covered (see Iraq War, Soldier's funerals, Budget deficits, Trade balances, shipping of jobs overseas, unemployment) and they cover in minute detail that which they want to expose as bogus.

The Daily Show with Samantha Bee did a wonderful job of exposing the media mindset the other night. The truth is that we cannot fight the media. Because the corporations are owned by the Republicans the Republicans own the media, we will lose. Simple as that.

Gravatarher presidency could be a 4 year soap opera where Bill won't shut up and let her have a shot at doing the job.

Bullfuckingshit and JMM can bite my shiny metal ass.

GravatarJeffCO.

I am sorry: call it bullshit if you want, But I RESPECTFULLY feel you are in error.

GravatarA Billary candidacy will galvanize the GOP like none of their own candidates will.

GravatarS h e e t s e s e s e s ...

GravatarFor the life of me I cannot figure why Edwards does not do better, but it can't be all laid at the feet of the press. He's been at this longer than either HRC or Obama.
-----------------
He doesn't have the bankroll that HRC and Obama have either. He isn't accepting money from pacs or lobbyists. Money buys a lot of things some tangible and some not, but it makes a difference.

And this is what we worry about now? I couldn't care less if Hillary ties Bill to the bedposts or the other way round. I couldn't care less if journalists hate having to cover the Clintons again. I care about the war and the world and the economy and the Supreme Court.

GravatarA Billary candidacy will galvanize the GOP like none of their own candidates will.

So Hillary galvanizes the GOP. And Dems are supposed to panic over that because...
No wait, they don't have to panic over that.
To be really galvanized, the GOP has to nominate a somebody. And so far there isn't one.

Gravatarwe will lose. Simple as that

Respectfully, DWD, IMO you are projecting.

GravatarI looked at all the Galliano photos--at the beginning, the medieval look, with furs and big berets was pretty neat. I liked the jester hats and weird jester clothing. The torture/victim stuff was pretty hard to take.

And the jesters were sort of mixed in
with that, iirce.

I would like some of the hats....

GravatarOff Topic: This totally pathetic. John Aravosis owner of AMERICAblog recently posted a thread about how angry he was because while making over $75,000.00 running his site he will not receive a rebate check.

The thread had over 500 comments, most by angry commentors, many were regulars. Mr. Aravosis in sheer panic mode for being exposed as the asshole he is quickly archived the thread and then totally removing the thread from his archives.

What progressive would do such a thing. First he censors comments that do not agree with him then just like a republican he destroys the thread like it never happened.

Screw you Mr. Aravosis! And by the way what the hell have you done with all of that money donated to you to upgrade your site!?!
