Spam “seems to do well when hard times hit,” said Dan Bartel, business agent for the union local. “We’ll probably see Spam lines instead of soup lines.”...
...Pancake mixes and instant potatoes are booming. So are vitamins, fruit and vegetable preservatives and beer, according to data from October compiled by Information Resources, a market research firm.
“We’ve seen a double-digit increase in the sale of rice and beans,” said Teena Massingill, spokeswoman for the Safeway grocery chain, in an e-mail message. “They’re real belly fillers.”
Kraft Foods said recently that some of its value-oriented products like macaroni and cheese, Jell-O and Kool-Aid were experiencing robust growth. And sales are still growing, if not booming, for Velveeta, a Kraft product that bears the same passing resemblance to cheese as Spam bears to ham...
...Invented during the Great Depression by Jay Hormel, the son of the company’s founder, Spam is a combination of ham, pork, sugar, salt, water, potato starch and a “hint” of sodium nitrate “to help Spam keep its gorgeous pink color,” according to Hormel’s Web site for the product.
Because it is vacuum-sealed in a can and does not require refrigeration, Spam can last for years. Hormel says “it’s like meat with a pause button.”

This stuff needs to be stamped on....
"A Fairfield woman whose car was adorned with celebratory signs for President-elect Barack Obama is furious that a priest singled her out during Sunday morning Mass and ordered her to leave.
Elizabeth Caster admits her Toyota Sequoia was parked in a loading zone outside of the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Fairfield, but said it was common practice by parishioners during services and that two other vehicles parked on either side of her vehicle were not addressed.
Caster said the Rev. Sebastian Meyer humiliated her in front of the congregation, saying from the pulpit, "We cannot have a car with Obama signs written on it on these premises. And I don't care who Obama is."
He continued, "I want this car off the premises in 10 minutes or it will be towed. Whoever's vehicle this is, I want it removed. I don't want to see that car anywhere around here," she said.
The Rev. Meyer did not return calls. An attempt to speak to him face to face ended abruptly Wednesday morning when he announced, "No, we're not writing that," and attempted to snatch a reporter's notebook away.
Caster said the priest followed her and her 10-year-old son out of the church and refused to let her park anywhere in the parking lot. She had to come back after the service to pick up her parents, who were visiting from Kenya.
She has since forgiven the pastor, she said, but noted a definite tone in his voice. "It was something to the effect of, I don't care who Obama is, he won, get over it," she said. "It seems there was some anger and animosity in his tone. You could feel the Holy Spirit sucked out of the church."

I have to admit that I'm engaging in some serious fantasizing right now.
I envision an Obama transition team keeping track of each new Executive Order, noting its number, so that on 1/21/09 President Obama can repeal each and every one of them.
Of course, in my fantasy, President Obama signs the new executive order and then extends his right middle finger in the general direction of Crawford, Texas.
I guess electing a new president doesn't quite change everything. I just hope it changes how this country deals with such tragedies.

That sucks...no question. But most states have now realized that they can't have the only healthcare in a given region with religious restrictions. So the Catholic hospital has to provide access for Planned Parenthood or somebody to provide those services.

There were NEVER that many homeless people on the streets till Saint Ronald of the Monster Deficit took over.
Terry C - Yes We Did!
I am the designated devil's advocate today.
It wasn't St Ronnie of the Rocks that closed down the mental health institutions. It was our side. And we didn't fight hard enough for the community care that was supposed to replace them.
There's plenty of blame to go around on the issue of the homeless.

Not exactly. The plan was for people to receive the appropriate level of care in their own communities.
However, just as this movement got started and everyone was released from institutions, the gummint started cutting funding for it. So the initiative (which might have been a good one) withered on the vine.
And that's a major reason for the problem of homelessness, although it's certainly not the only one (what homeless people *all* have in common is extreme poverty).

Karl Rove's 3 point plan for Republicans to come back to power (from the Newsweek link)
"3. Winning the war on terror is a matter of national survival. Republicans must be President Obama's best allies in waging unrelenting war against terrorists, and prod him sharply if he weakens or wavers."
The phrase "winning the war on terror" is pure bullshit. The War on Terror does not transcend all other matters as McCain kept blabbering. "Winning" whatever it's supposed to mean is not a matter of national survival. Trying to invigorate the only thing that got Bush re-elected namely making Americans scared shitless of 'terrorism'. It's the only thing that'll ever bring the Repugs back to power - 'be afraid, be very afraid'!

In my experience, most problems with social services have come from a board (for instance) deciding that they need a "businessperson" to run things "cost-effectively."
What usually happens after that is an orgy of nepotism, an explosion of administrative costs (salaries, in particular), and, as often as not, the closure of the facility, or the shifting of its services away from actually needy people.
The business expert then goes on to repeat the process elsewhere.
That's how it usually seemed to play out in CA, anyway.

The reality is that gay people are the last minority where it's socially acceptable to openly malign them, marginalize them politically and even take away their basic civil rights.
Expect the wingnuts to not give up so easily for that very reason.

Bullshit. Even you could have beaten McCain.
a) I was born in Canada.
b) Despite running a flawless campaign against an incompetent fool and during the middle of a financial meltdown blamed on the GOP, Obama still only beat McCain by just over 6 percent in the popular vote.
Edwards would have been sunk by the revelations about his affair.

The reality is that gay people are the last minority where it's socially acceptable to openly malign them, marginalize them politically and even take away their basic civil rights.
Stinky, I think for the most part you are right. However, there is another group of people who are hungering for basic civil rights: those women (1 in 3 over the age of 45) who have had an abortion.
Ellen Goodman had a great column in the Boston Globe on the issue about a month ago (and that column is now behind a firewall, I think).
Those women have not come "out of the closet," for perfectly good reasons, given the last 15 years. I hope the new administration changes the discourse so that those women will talk more freely. It's especially important right now while we are examining the true meaning of civil rights.

Phila, Pizen Sarpint
Funny how the whole 'mission' that was supposed to justify the tax-exempt status in the first place pretty much goes by the wayside.
On the other hand -- in our current greed driven culture, most social service organizations have only two sucky options:
1. Turn into businesses and survive to serve some portion of their clients
2. Maintain the purity of their mission and go bankrupt.
Be nice if we could find a happy medium somewhere.

Given Obama was:
1) largely unknown
2) African-American
3) had, by his own admission, a "funny name"
That he won at all is remarkable. It says much about him, but much about McCain, too. And about the preferences of the country.
The 6% spread, IOW, isn't really all that significant.

I think you overestimate the intelligence of the voting public. As I said, despite having everything stacked against him, McCain still was alarmingly close to Obama in the end, and lets not forget he actually had the lead coming out of the GOPer convention.
In a sane world, McCain's loss would have been McGovernesque.

Who will pitty the poor mutilated hangars used for back alley abortions.
All they wanted in their life was to hold your shirt, crisply pressed from the Chinese laundry.
But no... they get sacrificed, cut up and bent, to be stuck up some strange uterus, only to come out bloody and eventually.... rust away.

and starting to see beggars on the street - something you never see in the USA.Published 1979.
We had plenty of hobos travelling thru the southwest around that time - travelling men always would follow the sun. But only a very very few years later did we start having 'homeless' folks on the streets - sometimes whole families. They didn't have a clue how to live off the land, didn't know where to find shelter or supplies. '84 is when we had this huge upsurge in 'accidental' fires - fires set by folks looking to make a little warming fire but too ignorant to know how to do it. Even the hobos were astounded.
