Bitter apple.

Harry Reid has quietly affirmed that in the absence of sufficient votes to do otherwise, Congress will pass legislation to fund the militias for 180 days even if the cease-fire isn't extended-- but they'll revisit the issue after that, and they'll be taking a really hard look at al-Sadr's next funding request.

GravatarThat's all that was in the advert, too. I looked at it twice before I recognized the street.
ProfWombat

If any private property was recognizable (eg, can read street numbers), then it needs permission from the owner.

The street was not "incidental", it was the main point of the picture. It's not "public interest", it's a commercial enterprise.

In Canada this is skating on or over the privacy laws line.

GravatarI reckon we're rooting for anybody but McCain, who seems to have this magic power to make people vote for him in spite of all his asshole mainline Republican positions on everything.

GravatarAwwww.

A small North Dakota town is getting a bit of foreign aid to help build its community center: a $75,000 donation from Iceland.

Officials in Mountain, a northeastern North Dakota community with a rich Icelandic heritage told Iceland Prime Minister Geir Haarde about the $1.3 million community center project when he came to the town last year for the 108th annual August the Deuce Icelandic Celebration. It commemorates the beginning of Iceland's journey to independence from Denmark.

GravatarIt would be perfect if we had some Fredmentum in Florida.

GravatarI doubt Wall Street is terrified of a Democratic win, especially given that neither Clinton nor Obama are wild-eyed economic radicals. It's clearer by the day that Republicans haven't done so well by the economy in many ways. They've enabled a lot of folk to get stinking rich, and now the piper must be paid; that's been the Democrats' brief, again and again, and they've generally done well with it.

I was for Huckabee, on the theory that the American people need to see how batshit insane he and his fundie pals actually are, but I've changed my mind.

As somebody at Digby's place observed, back in 1964 everybody laughed at how batshit insane Barry Goldwater and his pals were, but by getting the presidential nomination they mainstreamed themselves even in defeat.

Huckabee's even crazier than Goldwater, and his pals are light years more dangerous. They really want to install a Christian theocracy in the world, not just this country. They have to be resisted on every fricking level....I'm not saying the rest of the Republicans aren't evil and a threat to everything that America is supposed to represent, but Huckabee is truly frightening on a whole other level.

GravatarWall Street certainly didn't have a problem with the last Democrat who occupied the White House. Only on Fox can they keep every last person who would point that out away from the camera.

"The civil lawsuit that led to Harris County District Attorney Chuck Rosenthal's downfall by exposing romantic e-mails he sent to his executive secretary actually began six years ago as a fight over cameras in a low-income, predominantly Hispanic part of town...

The brothers — Erik Adam Ibarra, 27, and Sean Carlos Ibarra, 37 — say the deputies stormed their home without probable cause, drew their guns, arrested them, seized their cameras and confiscated or destroyed their film."

That was the flukey weird part. It was very cold, ice was thick. But, unbeknownst to me, there was warm water being dumped into the lake from a nearby large building, creating a weak spot in the ice.

GravatarMarcellina-- Great post on meds. I was in a little village in the black forest (Bad Herrenalb) last fall, and wandered into an Apotheke to get something I'd forgotten to bring on the trip. If the German for Tylenol had not been "Tylenol", I would have been doomed.

GravatarInstead of begging the Saudi King to lower oil prices (which Bushboy won't do), how about a national conservation plan for the US that would reduce demand (also something Bushboy won't do).

Instead of more tax cuts, how about enforcing the tax code against rich tax cheats and closing tax loopholes for corporations? Estimated windfall = $300 billion.

With that we could announce a major national infrastructure rebuild, implement healthcare for all children and amply fund renewable energy technologies.

All of which will create US jobs and help reduce the deficits and mitigate recession.

Of course, Bushboy won't do any of the above.

GravatarTHE Taliban has seriously rejoined the fight in Afghanistan, an NGO security group said in a report that concluded the country was at the beginning of a war, not the end of one.

The Afghanistan NGO Safety Office (ANSO) said the Taliban's "easy departure" in 2001, when a US-led invasion drove them from power, was more of a strategic retreat than an actual military defeat.

"A few years from now, 2007 will likely be looked back upon as the year in which the Taliban seriously rejoined the fight and the hopes of a rapid end to conflict were finally set aside by all but the most optimistic," ANSO said.

About 1980 civilians were killed in 2007 - half by insurgents and the rest almost equally by soldiers or criminal groups, the group said.

Abductions and killings were likely to escalate this year, with growing links between insurgents and criminal gangs increasing the threat, ANSO said.

It said the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), which is helping the government fight insurgents, is "in fact just now entering a period of broad and deep conflict, the outcomes of which are far from certain."

ISAF may number about 41,000 soldiers but "realistically" could not have more than 7000 for combat, with the rest mostly support staff or prevented from fighting because of national restrictions, the group said.

The size of the Taliban force was unknown, but estimates ranged from 2000 to 20,000.

GravatarBobby Fischer died yesterday at 64 years of age.

Certainly one of the greatest chess players ever. Some of his games are as brilliant as anything the human mind could construct.

It was tragic that his brilliance was tarnished by a virulent schizophrenia that turned him into a recluse and hater.

GravatarElian!

That's South Florida.

GravatarRudy: and Fischer was the one we all wished we could play like. No plodding, painstaking Karpov-like positional play...

GravatarThe bodies of six kidnap victims were found inside a house in Mexico yesterday following a three-hour shootout between gunmen and soldiers and police.

The victims, all male, were blindfolded and gagged and had been shot in the head. The authorities in the city of Tijuana, near the US border, said the men had probably been abducted for ransom, or picked up for association with a rival gang.

The three-hour battle between a handful of gunmen in a house and about 100 soldiers and police outside has highlighted fears that a military-led offensive aimed at quelling a gruesome turf war between drug cartels is turning into a more general conflict.

Soldiers and state and local police were sent in to help control the gunfight, which began when federal agents prepared to raid a house police now say was a shelter for a cell of the Arellano Félix drug cartel.

The thing is that the recognizability of the properties were the sole purpose of publishing the picture.

GravatarGive ethics a break

One of the things that is bound to put me off anything is if I find out it's the 'ethical alternative' to something or other. At a visceral level I seem to react against all those things I'm *meant to do* - the books I *should* read, the places I *can't* shop in, those activities that find themselves on the *proscribed* list. It's not a great position for a green to be in but there you have it - I just don't like being moralised at I suppose.

GravatarA friend in SC says he has been getting tons of phone calls to vote for certifiably insane warmonger McCain for days now.
Ensley

What?? how dare you say anything against St. McCain - after all the "surge" is working and that proves that St. McCain was right about Iraq all along. /snark

PS - According to St. McCain - he opposed Rummy when it wasn't popular to do so. riiight.

(yawn)

GravatarRudy: yup, I'd add Alekhine and Morphy. Going for victories, occasionally indulging in brilliant combinations. You don't wish you were Nimzovich unless you have a desire to win so strong that you adopt the least colorful, and most powerful, of weapons.

That's the danger of watching the Patriots be methodically perfect in their games: that they'll be seen as the Karpovs of football rather than the Tals...

GravatarI saw Bobby Fischer once in a chess emporium in Greenwich Village in 1965.

The emporium was run by chess grandmaster Rossolimo who was wonderful man and USSR expatriate.

The two men couldn't have been more different. Rossolimo was kind, trusting and friendly. Fischer was furtive, suspicious and cold.

There is one absolute negative I see with Edwards when he is speaking. He never has a new story, comment, bit or anything. It doesn't generate an image of depth and diversity in experience.

Could easily have fallen and if I had not come home it would not have been easy to find me. Of course before WWII my father worked up in the bush cutting railroad ties. Two of them would be up there all winter cutting ties which would be floated down in the spring. If anything had happened there was no way anybody would have known about it until months later, so I guess what I did was not a big deal to him. Don't know how my mother felt about it though.

GravatarIn 2004 before she ran for the Senate Claire McCaskill said she hoped Hillary Clinton would not run

GravatarHate to make your head explode, steve, but the more I hear her speak, and the more the media piles on, the more I find myself warming up to Sen. Clinton....

Yesterday, even ErinPDX, said she wasn't quite as opposed. Still not supporting, but not frothing at the mouth against anymore.

GravatarMcCaskill is my grandkids Sen, and they made a great choice.

But I have to go read how to operate the new microwave, which replaces the Kenmore I bought in 1987.

GravatarThe real Reagan legacy, courtesy of Steve Gilliard, who I think would have been disgusted at the pandering of a certain presidentail candidate.

When Nixon croaked and got the whitewash treatment, there were SO many letters on the editorial pages in my neck of the woods.

The theme was:

"Were these people asleep during the entire 1970s?"

or

"Did I IMAGINE Watergate?"

GravatarMy childhood was not childproofed for my protection.

Have you seen Mad Men? There is a scene in which a child has the plastic from dry cleaning over her head and body, and the mom scolds her -- about the dry cleaning.

If Edwards (god forbid) has to drop out, Senator Clinton is my choice.

GravatarEven if Obama is black he's sending a signal that white folks needn't be afeared cause he's not "that kind".

You know, uppity.

"You folks can keep the money. I'm the safe bet."

To support him, I have to pretend he's a pretender.

GravatarI know it's difficult, but try to imagine how different Edwards' campaign would be if the MCM had treated him as legitmate candidate, had written about him as a man of poor beginnings who had singlehandedly done well in school and then in a legal career, then achieved the American Dream of becoming rich. Imagine if the press had presented his policies in this light, as someone who knew what it was to be working poor, had made it, and now wanted to make sure that the educational opportunities were there for everyone. Who wanted to free people from the bondage of health insurance available only through their employers. Who wanted to find ways to ensure corporations would create jobs in this country. Etc.

I think Edwards' campaign is a prime example of how the MCM
* is controlling our political discourse. They moved early and they moved fiercely to marginalize him. The 3H's which equal the Big H--Hypocrisy.

It was more difficult to marginalize with Al Gore because he had a better known public service history and was, like, the actual Vice President. But they worked to create an image of him which was almost the exact opposite of what his real record and previous image had been (wonky Boy Scout) and they succeeded.

What I find amazing is how similar the MCers' reactions to Hillary are to they way they had felt about Al Gore. The juvenile mocking, the glee at coming defeats. WTF is with these Heathers--er--journalists?

We theorize they do what they perceive to be their employers' desired approach. But, the almost childlike bullying of Dem pols spooks me. They are destroying our democracy.

GravatarDamn--sorry about the bolding slanties.

McCaskill campaign: Kerry should apologize for comments

Claire McCaskill's campaign called on Sen. John Kerry to apologize for a "botched joke" he made on Monday
Liars for Bush

I remember that - what a stupid moment.

1 - He didn't botch the joke.

2 - He didn't say what he was reported to have said.

3 - Dem pols should know better than to accept ANY media representation of their peers.

GravatarSen. John Kerry to apologize for a "botched joke" he made on Monday

You see, if Big John had been a 'puke, he could make all the jokes he wants.

He could talk about WW III and laugh about it.

He could go crawling under a table "searching for WMDs". All that good stuff.

But, since he's a Democrat, he's automatically a bad guy.

GravatarIMO McGaskill has been disappointing.

So has HRC and Obama.

They need to get in front of something like Dodd did.

GravatarWell, rather than fall for the media narrative, I sent John Edwards another $100, yesterday. I'll do it two weeks from now, too.
.

GravatarAmen, jawbone.

ql, the teen made it to your neck of the woods safely. She'll be heading back shortly.

Well, via Digby, here's the problem with both her and Obama:

In a time tailor-made for progressive ideas, when the conservative brand is almost entirely trashed, we have two centrist candidates running to lead the party.

I have basically abandoned any optimism that it will matter particuarly even if we have a big Dem win come November...

What? It is only 10 AM there.

Gravatarjawbone, you make some good points.

What I see also is that the media simply wasn't interested in Edwards. Hillary — ooh, a woman, and Bill's wife! and Obama (oooooh, a black man! — quite simply captivated the interest more of the journalists who were not against him, but not for him either. The few who fought for him and the wingers who ridiculed him were not swayed, but that middle ground, they went with the stuff they assumed people think is news.
Which was unfortunate for Edwards and the others.

GravatarHey simels-- Schlussel is moving in on your movie review bidness. It's really quite pathetic.

A progressive, assertive Congress is the key, not the Presidency.

GravatarMolly - good.

That was quick.

Is Snow on the ballot in SC?

GravatarI saw that botched joke ref in a circulating military email just a couple of weeks ago, amidst otherwise somewhat interesting and insightful writing. That's got legs, Murtha etc. - all now in the RW and even MSM basic principia.

I'm more optimistic than in the past. I think both Hillary and Obama have shown good signs recently (bad ones, too, but I expect that). And the thugs are in trouble.

Perhaps your expectations are too high. I hope to avoid open police state and full time war.

I caught some of that last week. Terrible.

At a caucus meeting it is called to order, those present pick sides (which takes only a few minutes usually), the count results are recorded and that's it. You're not getting paid by the hour.

GravatarAnd isn't it sad that's the best we can hope for?

I dunno--maybe they'll take Bob Herbert's advice from this morning. I was genuinely excited reading that.

I understand that grocery prices are anticipated to increase 4-7% this year. Which should just about consume the raise I was given.
Fuel prices continue rising and I won't be able to afford to get to work.

No. It's great that we have realistic hope for even that after 8 years of Bush.

GravatarIn a time tailor-made for progressive ideas, when the conservative
brand is almost entirely trashed, we have two centrist candidates

Why should Progressivism require a prostrate Republican party to be effective? We really do have to find a way to beat them even when they are on their feet.

It's sad that we got to that point in the first place, and now have to undo all the damage he did just to get back some semblance of sanity and accountability.

GravatarTweet is so into the violence and mayhem metaphors for the Clintons--they always go back to the 90's, they wait for someone to stick their neck out and then they bite their heads off.

Just now talking to an Obama spokesperson.

GravatarGail Collins was on Timmeh's Saturday show and said, about Obama, that he seems like the neophyte politician who's just gotten into office and thinks everything would be wonderful if everyone just was totally honest and just said what they think.

I'm not sure what she meant--seemed to be implying that he was not just a neophyte in DC but naive. I don't think it was praise...but hard to know with her.

Gravatardo it for Chuck Norris
