It's not about demonizing FDR, per se, it's about attacking activist government.
It's the next logical step for them. Their ideology requires it. They know this is a seminal moment that could result in a sea change in our nation's progress, or lack thereof.
The fascists are just doing what they've always done.
The question becomes, will Obama be as bold as FDR, or will he become the next Clinton and kick the can down the street...

S. Clay Wilson was moved out of intensive care Thursday afternoon, capping a pretty darn good week for the injured cartoonist.
"He's in much better shape," Lorraine Chamberlain, Wilson's long-time partner, said Friday morning. "This means he's not in danger of dying."
Wilson, 67, was in intensive care for two-and-a-half weeks after sustaining severe injuries on Nov. 1, injuries most likely incurred while falling and striking his head as he walked home drunk from a friend's apartment.
Chamberlain said Wilson is slowly regaining his ability to communicate with the help of a speech therapist. On Monday, she said, "I leaned in real close to his face and said, 'Baby, do you remember you love me?' And he grinned from ear to ear and pooched out his lips so I could kiss him."
But she added that the cartoonist is still suffering from aphasia, an increased difficulty of summoning the right words. "The part of the brain that was injured," she notes, "makes him weigh a question so long that you don't think he's going to answer it at all.
"The irony is not lost on anyone that Wilson is the most talkative person in the world, a real motormouth. We're so used to not being able to get a word in edgewise."
Bet that'll get a lot of airtime.

Ex: A friend of mine is a single mom, just gettin by. One day before the election, she called on her cell and bitched about how she's in line at the drugstore drive-through, and she can't afford the rx she needs.
I mentioned something about healthcare reform, then she goes into a long diatribe about how we have to vote for McCane or else our healthcare will be ruined, etc.

In fact, he may very well have lived at the same address, or at least the same neighborhood for all that time. So why do I have to read about his life-threatening injuries in a newspaper from Portland while there's NOTHING about it in his "hometown" paper?

Back from dinner.
I once experienced hysteria on great early 70's acid. My facial features did not change as an internal needle swung back and forth between profound grief and utter hilarity. The point I was trying to make is that grief and laughter could not occupy the same space (and the mid point of the needle cancelled both out). The same goes for love and hate--you can't experience them at the same instant.
And if you're a shit-eating weasal you have the life of a shit-eating weasal--even if you think you're God's gift to humankind.
Of course the revenge-minded part of us want to see certain people hung from the Capital rotundra...or begging forgiveness in sackcloth and ashes... I'm still convinced a "karmic" price is being exacted nonetheless for being a rat ass.

How is this bullshit?
It is my life....how in the hell can I not be responible for it? Whether I want to admit it or not, this is how life works.
Shared Humanity
You're responsible for what you can affect. But most of what happens to be has nothing whatsoever to do with their own choices. For example, you're fated to live in the 21st century, as opposed to Neanderthal times or the glorious future age of the galactic empire; that has a lot to do with how your life proceeds.
Then there's the small issue of external factors. All the bullshit Buddhist wisdom in the world can't convince me that the people of Gaza are "responsible" for the IDF bombs landing in their neighbourhoods. Or that the rape victim is responsible for being murdered by a sadistic fuck. Or the baby born in a gutter...
So, yea, you've got responsibility for the millimetre width of shit you control (even that is arguable, tho), while the mile-wide world determines everything else.

Like many things it can be carried to extremes. People have things happen to them that they cannot control. Some are born poor and sick and others are not.
You can do the best you can given your circumstances and there's no use complaining that someone else was born with more.
still - the fact that someone was born on third base does not give them the right to think they chose to hit a triple, ya know?

And, for that which we indeed do have responsibility for, the choices are often not exactly clear, and yet taking any action at all (even not taking action) has enormous future implications that we can not even begin to conjure. So, we're hardly responsible, beyond trying to do the "right" thing in the dark.

In other words, conservatives don't want to return to Franklin Roosevelt's policies, they want to continue George W. Bush's.
Foser gives 'em more credit than they deserve. The history of the last thirty years can be largely attributed to one goal - discrediting FDR and removing every last vestige of his policies. Especially the ones that worked.
A secondary goal was to preempt any future president from attempting the sort of thing FDR achieved. In this, the deficit is central. FDR paid for the new deal by running up the deficit. Well, if your deficit is already run up to record numbers before the next FDR comes along, then he's gonna be hamstrung. Even if there is a will, in other words, there just ain't no way.
And that's where we are now. It remains to be seen whether Obama is akin to Roosevelt. But it's a safe bet he's more inclined to follow FDR's path than, say, Ronald Reagan's.
Trouble is, even with a record deficit, we're still talking about government stepping up and bailing out regular folks. That wasn't supposed to happen. Everybody was supposed to nod sadly at the deficit and reluctantly agree that maybe we can't afford things like Social Security, Medicare and public education after all.
So it's time to ratchet up the anti-Roosevelt rhetoric.
It pretty much comes down to that.

It's real fucking easy to say you're in control, when your biggest challenge is arguing with a cartoon bartender on a sucky blog. But in the real world, lots and lots of people have real struggles that they're not up to: their house and family get blown to smitereens. Their loved ones leave them, leaving a irreparable hole in their heart. They've been knocked down by racism at every turn in their lives. And a billion other things. Sure, a handful of them are strong enough to survive, even shine. And hundreds of millions of them get angry, lose patience, strike out at the world. Let's point to the handful of astonishing strong ones and tell the hundreds of millions that their misfortune and anger is their own fault.

No, you don't subtract a loss with a wild card win. You add a win.
9 - 6 and 1 for the regular season.

OK, talked with my mom and my sister and my brother, who flew in from Cinci.
She's feeling a lot better since they removed fluid from her lungs and actually was able to eat a bit today.
Yesterday, they were talking about sending her home today, but thankfully decided to keep her in the hospital through at least Monday, when they will do an exam and biopsy through a bronchoscope.
I'm relieved that they decided to keep her until they have a diagnosis and treatment/comfort care plan. This is the best that I was hoping for at this point. Whew.

They've adjusted. Jacobs is healthy. Once they sewed up the division, they played not to get hurt.
The wide receivers will be less important tomorrow than the runners are. And they have three good ones. Westbrook can't carry the entire team.

Watch out:
Mercury -- the Messenger God in mythology and the ruler of transportation and communication turns retrograde in Aquarius on January 11. This is the first of the four Mercury retrogrades happening in 2009 and lasts till January 31 or February 1 (depending upon your time zone), when he halts and begins his return to direct motion through the zodiac
Mercury is the planet that rules all forms of communication and any time a planet turns retrograde it is time to review. So, when Mercury turns around and goes back through territory it's already traversed, it is time for you, too, to travel back. Don't try to institute plans for the future. Instead see if you can lay the groundwork to provide a secure foundation. Mercury's current placement in Aquarius makes this a wonderful time to break away from old habits and ideas. Mercury will move back into Capricorn on January 21 in its retrograde motion creating disruptions or breakdowns in communications and administrative details. Since this sign also signifies ambitions, it might see us trying to push through own agendas and gain status or rise in life. Jupiter, the Sun, and Mars will also all cross Mercury as he moves along his backwards path, and those days could prove to be significant.
Mercury conjuncts Jupiter on January 19 -- this might be a time for reflections, and old friends can come back into our lives. On January 20, Inauguration Day in the United States, the Sun will conjunct Mercury in the first degrees of Aquarius. The new President is sure to have some very important messages for us on how he is going to clean up the mess left for him from the past and with Aquarius involved, he may have some new and unique ideas. Retrograde Mercury conjuncts Mars in Capricorn on January 27, and Venus will be sending them some positive energy at the same time. The Solar eclipse of January 26 formed by the Sun and Moon will definitely make us ready for some changes.

Calling John McCain. Senator John McCain...pick up the white courtesy phone, please.
------------------------------
An "eternal" flame at Bullhead City's new veterans memorial park that only lasted until city officials received a $961 gas bill has been re-lit following complaints by veterans groups.
The Medal of Honor Memorial at the Arizona Veterans Memorial Park alongside the Colorado River was lit on Veterans Day in November. When the bill arrived in late December, city officials were stunned.
"It caught us by surprise," City Manager Tim Ernster said Thursday. "What we decided to do for the time being is to turn the flame on ... for special events, for Veterans Day, Fourth of July, Memorial Day — those types of activities."
The flame was extinguished on Monday. The Mohave Valley Daily News published a story Friday quoting city officials and disgruntled veterans who had worked to pay for and build the memorial before turning it over to the city.
The flame was back on by midmorning Friday following a meeting of city officials.
"What happened was really a miscommunication," city spokesman Steve Johnson said. "The issue came up one day and it was never intended to be shut off."
Johnson said the flame is impressive, but city parks officials are looking at ways to put a smaller burner in place and only use the larger one at special events.
"We're looking at alternatives, because $1,000 a month in these economic times is certainly a consideration," Johnson said.

The thing is that effective and actual population size are two different things, and that population structures are very important.

And, for the record, I LIKE hearing about NTodd's "latest crusade."
AND Vicki's love life.
So there!
Terry C, Footloose & Fancyfree
good for you.
I, for one couldn't care less what that egotistical fuck does or who that fucking slut beds down with. But I'm glad it interests you.
Maybe you can have NTodd include you in one of those podcasts noone except him and his girlfriend listen to......

Oh, he's got a well-stocked bar.
I would just to accept that I would never be invited over to dinner ever again. At least not by him, though it's possible that his wife would still invite me (his political crusades are driving her nuts).

Zod cares about Vicki, that's obvious. I mean, come on now.
It's Gomez, not saying it hasn't been around for a while, but it was Gomez then too.
My opinion, I was here when it all went down, and I'm sticking with my opinion. No one else has to.

Then you're fools. But hey, I guess some guy suddenly calling Vicki a slut while not caring who she fucks is normal. On planet insanity, maybe.
