These two were my faves:

Do you have direct or indirect knowledge of any government entity or a proxy ever intervening to support the stock market (or any individual stock) via futures or in any other way?

Does the Federal Reserve have an opinion on the morality of debasing the income of wage earners and the cash savings of retirees in order to support speculators, stock-selling corporate executives, and 30-something hedge fund traders making millions a year?

GravatarSee how a gun can help.

No charges will be filed against a man who shot and killed his roommate on New Year's Eve, authorities said Friday, contending that the shooter acted in self-defense against a violent and out-of-control figure who had forced his way back into the house.

Brian Sessoms, 24, was shot with a handgun in the chest, stomach and elbow after he climbed back into the home through a second-story window, according to a sheriff deputy's report. (he was drunk)

After reviewing the 911 dispatch audiotapes from that night, 9th Circuit Solicitor Scarlett Wilson said she will not file charges against the shooter, Joseph Harriott, 25. (police did not respond in a timely fashion to the 911 call)

Harriott's actions are covered by the state's "Castle Doctrine" law of self- defense, she said. The doctrine allows homeowners to use necessary force, including gunfire, to protect themselves in the face of impending danger or injury.

Sessoms' last documented address was in Cross, but he had lived in the Summerville home for at least two weeks, and possibly as long as two months. He and possibly as long as two months. He and Harriott were friends.

Sessoms' family members expressed outrage that the incident did not lead to criminal charges.

"We feel my nephew was murdered in cold blood," said Regina Sessoms, the dead man's aunt. "He was not a home invader, he was living there and paying rent."

She added, "How can it be self-defense against someone who was unarmed?"

perhaps its related to this - Reported on many Iraqi news sites, an Iraqi soldier killed two American soldiers and a captain for kicking a pregnant Iraqi woman

The incident happened two days ago when an Iraqi soldier "Caesar Saadi" joined the American occupation forces in a raid in Mosul, he opened fire after he saw the American soldiers started to beat and kick an Iraqi pregnant woman.

Lebanese newspaper Al-akhbar reported today the story added:

In the streets of Mosul, graffiti appeared on the walls yesterday saying:

Well done Caesar

Also, people in the city are distributing leaflets saying the same text.

Caesar is now in custody accused with killing three Americans.

GravatarWhen I read about all of these folks who so passionately defend their right to have firearms to "protect their home", I think about the response here in Georgia to the shooting of a 90-year-old African American woman who was killed by the police in her own home as they served a bogus "no-knock" drug warrant (obtained with false testimony from an informant).

She shot at them in the belief that they were home-invaders, so all of the wingnuts were arguing that the police had every right to kill her in her own home since she "resisted authority".

My brother in law got his first handgun in 1985, right after a neighbor up the street was murdered by Richard Ramirez.

Then he got an M-16, which he did take out during the 92 riots. Not that there was a chance of any riots happening in Diamond Bar, California. But you can never be too sure.

I don't (my middle sister not being counted), though I'll count my soon to be ex brother in law-the gun toting one.

I'm beginning to realize this was a bit odd.

GravatarIt is actually pretty damn funny when you think about it that they're seeing Obama as some kind of Black Messiah whose downfall will lead to a rebellion. I would say the real race-related question that merits discussion re Obama is will he even capture the lion's share of the black vote? He has studously avoided wading into the arena of race politcs, except in the most dog-whistle kind of ways, like adopting the "I have a dream" cadence in his victory speech in Iowa. White Southern Man that he is, Edwards probably offers a better package for the average black voter, and Hillary comes from an administration with a proven record of strong relations with black community leaders. Obama's platform is all squishy and vague. If he does get the bulk of the black vote, it will be his skin that got it for him and not anything that came out of his mouth, AFAICT. Makes for kind of an interesting sociological experiment.

GravatarI can't imagine doing that. He's going blow a hole in something someday.

GravatarThe real issue is that the breakdown of civil society is the perpetual wet dream of gun nut glibertarians like Reynolds.

Speaking as a Texan, Duncan: are you sure you're not a Texan? You have so much insight into the thought processes of many of my fellow citizens.

Or, to take it seriously, you are dead on. The real driving force behind the NRA is a collective mindset secretly wishing for a breakdown in civil society, in which all shoot-em-up fantasies come true. They honestly think they'd do well under such a scenario. Not just creepy, but stupid.

I agree. Most of the things I regret losing though were of little value to others. Students never returned certain books, for example. indeed. one of my favorite parts in the movie "grand canyon" is when steve martin's character is held up at gunpoint, by a man asking for his wallet. the character he plays is a flashy, wealthy man with an expensive sports car. he says to his robber, "here! take it!" and fumbles for his keys instead of his wallet.

the robber shoots him, takes his wallet, and says, "i don't want your car."

it sort of encapsulates my belief that white people seem to think nonwhite people are bloodthirsty, perpetually covetous, angry murderous rapists, when in fact the truth is that poor people don't want to be poor, and sometimes will do "drastic" things not to be. why is that so hard to understand?

I agree. Most of the things I regret losing though were of little value to others. Students never returned certain books, for example. But most of the things I keep evoke memories, for example photographs. That is why on those news reports after a tornado or hurricane you see people rescusing photograph albums instead of their Kenmore washer and dryer.

Where I was I reading this week that someone who considered themselves liberal was supporting Huckabee because he wanted art taught in schools.

Never mind that he'll destroy everything else, and probably never get art in the schools, that was what was important.

So I suppose that makes him too 'liberal'

GravatarBTW, I saw the Denzel Washington Great Debaters movie yesterday.

Much more interesting than I expected. It's not strictly a Hollywood feel good, David and Goliath little guy triumphs crowd pleaser shlockfest. It's actually an interesting look at a peculiar moment in American history, the time just prior to the contemporary Civil Rights movement.

It glosses over a lot, of course, but it's pretty smart and raises a lot of pertinent issues for our current historical moment....

Oh, and Denzel just has charisma up the wazoo, of course.

Mom's dad was a Lutheran minister, Dad's paternal uncle was a methodist minister.

Funny thing is mom's parents were the conservative ones, though they never taught her racism. So mom was appalled and upset when, during a memorial service for MLK, grandma wouldn't sing We Shall Overcome. (grandma stood held and held hands, but wouldn't actually sing it).

It really changed Mom's view of her own mother.

Gravatar.I pointed out that with a good tan I could be almost as dark as Obama

Skin tone aside, from the perspective of pedigree, Obama is every bit as white as he is black. It's odd to me how this "touch of the tarbrush" mentality makes everyone with even one part in eight of black African ancestry "black".

Gravatar DIYARBAKIR, Turkey (Reuters) - Turkey's prime minister on Saturday visited victims of a bomb that killed five people in the mainly Kurdish city of Diyarbakir and said the attack proved the desperation of Kurdish PKK separatist rebels.

Turkey has blamed the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) for Thursday's bombing, which targeted a military convoy in the centre of Diyarbakir. Five people, including three children, were killed and more than 100 injured in the blast.

"This treacherous act shows the desperation of the terrorist organisation as well as its lack of any goal," Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan told a news conference after talks with the provincial governor.

The PKK has made no comment on the bombing and there has been no claim of responsibility.

Turkey is currently waging an aerial bombing campaign against PKK targets in nearby northern Iraq, including cave hideouts that serve as living quarters and arsenals.

I disagree with the last statement.

At its core, racism is a manifestation of tribalism, and a fear of scarcity. Humans are deeply programmed to separate into "us" vs. "them" to survive. And it wasn't all that long ago that we still needed to - my mother's family would send all the cousins to live with whoever had a job during the Depression.

In an age of plenty, the lizard-brain still controls some people's reactions.

But I agree with the "deny reality" bit. My father was a dyed-in-the-wool racist, but would freely admit that his best friend was a black man.

It's all those other niggers that wuz worthless.

No, I'm just thinking Denver = Chicago, and a turning point socially and politically. But the other ugly stuff might happen, too--sadly, there will be no Apollo 8 to save '08.

So my usual question: what are we prepared to do about that, having these predictions in hand?

GravatarJust got here--has anyone discussed the NPR report about a NH rally last night, where several Dem candidates appeared? Hillary's campaign bought seats/tables in the middled and Obama's supporters were in cheaper seats.

When Hillary spoke, a said something pretty mild which might be applied to Obama, his supporters booed her. Then, when Obama took the stage, his supporters rushed the stage area and took over the Hillary supporters' area.

Now, I don't know if this was covered anywhere else--but, what will be made of that? His supporters were described as enthusiastic and young, but their actions were allowed to be seen as rude and--perhaps--revolutionary. Her supporters were described as more mature and less enthusiastic. One more mature Hillary female supporter was quoted as saying that she was disappointed all these young women didn't seem to care about having a female president, that they didn't know how much easier it was for them after all the work of the femninists' work in the 60's and onward.

So, is the a way of saying that Obama's youth corps may be a bit over the top? Or to paint Hillary's supporters as too old?

What were your reactions to this report? And have other MCMers covered this?

GravatarDon't forget people don't like change. Middle and upper middle class people have health insurance and they're afraid that going to a universal system will somehow deny them that insurance. You can talk till you're blue in the face and still not convince some of em.

Well, to be fair to my in-laws, they were probably really expressing their true belief that other people would not vote for Obama for that reason. They tend to be easily swayed by family members (which I find very odd, I've never been influenced by family or friends in my political beliefs)- they are surrounded by flaming liberals (me, DH to some degree and his sister). Smokes --

I've been meaning to ask you. Is your gravatar the Charlie Watts illustration from his kids book about Charlie Parker?

If not what is it? It's really cute...

Travel. It's a big world full of hysterical irrational racists of many kinds. Don't over-estimate the originality of Americans.

Gravatarhere in the UK the 'anti PC' crowd whine a lot and jump on any extreme example as an example that the left wing pinkos are being fascists just because they can't use nasty and disgraceful words anymore

GravatarBut I'm still voting for Edwards. He's the only one that gets it. He isn't taking any corporate money and both Hillary and Obama have completely sold out.

And that's why I'm sending him money.

Gravatarin three more years, a lot of people who think of themselves as middle class will be on medicare..that is the time to make the move for single payor --

turn the page with boomers

GravatarWe fought a war over black folk. That must be gotten past before we can get past the racism.

Actually, we fought a war to preserve the Union or assert States' rights. Slavery was not the proximate cause, although the war morphed more explicitly into that later, but even then more as a tactical thing (e.g., Emancipation, 54th Mass rgmt) than a goal. Reconstruction itself was only partly about civil rights...

GravatarI think we need to cast away our original impressions of Obama and give him a fair hearing.

I'm prepared to do that.

There are components of guilt and fear.

Well, I meant she would she go left as president, but fair point. We shall see what she does next....

GravatarThat's exactly it. You have health insurance. That's the point--many people are afraid of "socialized" medicine because they are at least covered now under the current system and have "freedom" and whatnot. They don't see the golden handcuffs and vote out of fear.

Another way to put it is that people out of fear are clinging to a sinking ship. I work at a VERY progressive institution, and my health care benefits are slowly being shifted from the institution to me.

This is one of the most unusual examples of American 'exceptionalism' I've read. I'd say the World's history shows all races on Earth share in inter and intra race hatred to a degree existing here in the US.

Gravatarwas your father poor?

Yes, he was. As was everyone in the town he (and I) grew up in - in the 5th-poorest county in the nation.

what about rich racists like bush, does he fear scarcity?

Not consciously. But the urge to draw borders between "my" tribe and "your" tribe comes from that evolved fear.

As does the wingtard's obsession with "family." I know people that, even today, make a distinction between "real" children and "adopted" children. Our genes want to live on - thus sex, family, and racism.

Much of the behaviour is learned, and as such it can be unlearned or avoided.

Which brings up the question: do you want to control your urges, or justify them?

GravatarFrom last night:

"There really is a finite amount of bullshit any people are going to suffer before the characterization of them as bloodthirsty peasants becomes all too real and all the snarky dismissive putdowns in the world won't save you. At some point the class warfare of the the type the right whines about becomes real and they discover that they aren't the only ones with firearms."

GravatarOr do I not have a grasp of middle class again?
EkCenTriK

No. Of course they have it through their employers and they don't want the government messing with it. Explain all you want that it makes you a slave to a corporation and they'll agree, but just try and change it.

GravatarI love how much we've progressed as a society when folks won't vote for someone because of their fucking name.

Even "Old Europe" France has a leader with a non-French name.

The obsession over Obama's name is racism, pure and simple. The Repukes don't feel they can come out and point to the color of his skin, but invoking his name, which stirs up their limbic-brained fears and racism, is just as good.

I abhor them for this.

GravatarNo, it's your golden boy himself, Obama, who is threatening "riots" by blacks in this country. Get your facts straight!

have many of them actually USED their 'healthcare' beyond a checkup? fuck the idiots, i am sick and tired of arguing very simplistic things that ought to be known

GravatarJoe Scarborough now talking about the event where Obama spoke--saying his speech was so electrifying that his crowd rushed the stage, adds that Hillary was booed.

So that must be the main MCM take on "crushing the stage."

NPR noted that Hillary's supporters left after the event--but Obama's supporters were lined up to get his autograph.

1968 was truly horrible. As a result of that year, the battle lines were drawn in indelible ink. People's positions got hardened, and it was when the seeds of our national nightmare were planted.

GravatarEurope has its own race flashpoints

worrying about immigrants, especially those with brown skins and even second and third generations

GravatarI have so little faith in the ability of my people to see past that shit.

I hear you.

Are you referring to the Hillary Clinton who just blasted Obama for being "Liberal?"

Thanks for playing.

GravatarObama's speech is seriously good. The difference between Obama and Edwards talking about poor people is that Edwards gives me the impression of advocating charity and Obama social justice.

GravatarI'll work like hell and give the max to the candidate the Dems nominate. I'm not going to give anybody money now though.

it's going to be interesting.

I'm particularly curious to see if Chelsea takes an active role in reaching out to young women, who don't seem to like her mother very much.

Gravatarnothing else comes close, or is more irrational and deeply seated in something i will never, ever understand.
chicago dyke, daring to belitt

At the heart of it is stupidity and ignorance and that's what it should be called. Stupidity and Ignorance! not racism which is a quaint word with little meaning that lends an air of social credibility to the hate - in fact most racists are okay with being called racist - it empowers them - Don't think they'd like being labelled as Stupid and ignorant in every tv broadcast about the subject i.e "The stupid and ignorant members of the kkk today rallied against..."

Gravatar"we" didn't fight a war over black people, that was the line used to get poor people to fight for the union. it worked. those same poor people weren't exactly welcoming or supportive of the newly freed's rights or that enthusiastic about giving them a equal seat at the employment or political table. what free blacks who did manage to make something of their lives after the war were quickly jim crowed back to near slavery. it took about a generation, but the blossoming post-civil war middle class of skilled former slaves setting up their own shops and whatnot was made to disappear.

The Holocaust comes to mind.
blerb

no one has suffered like the jews when you take all of history into account, but i'm speaking of this country. going all Public Enemy, 400 years is a long fucking time, yo?

Gravatarwhat a hoot it wuz when the press was trying to find ways to report about the influx of Eastern European migrants to our shores

as they were white it was so hard for the gutter press to mold it in racial terms.

so instead they went on about numbers.

lotta legislation when it comes to immigrations is very racist and always hits those with brown skin the hardest

and they are also turned into demons by the press

GravatarI think we need to cast away our original impressions of Obama and give him a fair hearing.

I'm continuously giving them all a fair hearing. As I've said, I will be totally fine with any of the Dems and have contributed to Edwards and Dodd (wish he'd stayed in). Kucinich just happens to be the one who best matches my ideals and I think has a necessary message that has been drowned out in the rush to anoint the more corporate, acceptable candidates.

GravatarThe obsession over Obama's name is racism, pure and simple.

Yes, it is.

Zapette and I were talking about this last night, and she brought up the fact that "Hussein" is a very common name/middle name with a lot of the students she works with. But the (sorry for the term) "hysteria" over his name is directly tied to the islamophobia that still permeates and rears is ugliest head every so often.

I just think that rightists are pissed that they won't have a Hillary to kick around for much longer.

GravatarFrom last night:

GravatarThe Social Security Administration employs about 65,000 people.

GravatarI seriously think certain segments of American political life...

Must be referring to the radical wing of the bridge players international.

Gravatar. The obsession over Obama's name is racism, pure and simple.

I don't even thin it's so much racism ofn the part of those who promulgate it. Mostly, it's a straw that is being grasped at in desperation. Outright racists wouldn't ever vote for him anyway. They figure they can do enough subliminal damage to him among more or less normal people with subconscious race issues to knock off a point or two, so they're going for it. It really shows that there is no bottom below which they will not sink.

Gravatarjawbone | Homepage | 01.05.08 - 11:28 am -- My question about other's takes on this report about the supporters of Hill and Barack.

NPR also said Edwards didn't attend this rally--was in Portsmouth instead. Noted no one attending was going to have their vote changed, so Edwards was looking for the possible changeable votes, apparently.

GravatarPretty much everyone has prejudices.

GravatarI just think that rightists are pissed that they won't have a Hillary to kick around for much longer.
Zap Rowsdower

Ha! Another reason to pick one of the other 2!

Gravatar.but i'm speaking of this country.

I don't really want ot be all cussed about this, but I'm not sure it takes the cake even here. We did, after all, pretty much exterminate the original inhabitants of this country. know I can only get into trouble trying to make these sorts of comparisons from my position of relative privilege, but as I see it Man' unspeakable inhumanity to Man is pretty damned pervasive and consistent.

GravatarReconstruction itself was only partly about civil rights...
NTodd, Twat

The first use of the 14th Amendment was to grant corporations personhood. So the Union was preserved, but the Republic began its long decline.

GravatarPretty much everyone has prejudices.
Econ 102

well I'm prejudiced against the backwards thinking members of the political right - and people who believe in angels and fairies and shit - I take a wide berth but I'm cordial

GravatarHeading upstairs now.....

GravatarEdwards in talking about the Two Americas is much more graphic and specific. Obama seems more abstract and idealistic. Which is very appealing in that the young tend toward absolutes, while not always seeing shades of gray. They haven't been laid off--or at least not lost as much if they were.

Kevin Phillips wrote that he feard the people of this country would not really take their democracy back until there was another economic catastrophe similar to the Great Depression. We're not there yet.

GravatarBTW, I'm not thinking of young people as being less intelligent or perceptive--just thinking abou the studies of the mind which doesn't stop developing until mid-20's or so. And until that happens there is a tendency for the emotional parts of the brain to predominate. Which is why treating adolescents as adults in criminal cases is so bad, in my opinion.

GravatarRE: gun nut libertarians. Wi does not allow conseal carry. When it comes up in discussion I am always amazed at the paranoia of the people who are pushing it. These are usually white men who's likelyhood of ever needing to use a gun is almost zero.
shemp

Yeah, but the need for penis compensation is much higher.

GravatarThere are multiple sheets above. Just thought I would let everyone know.

Gravatar"we" didn't fight a war over black people

This country most certainly did. It was speech made by Lincoln in 1858. It was not about states' rights as Southern states didn't give a damn about states' rights other than their own and insisted that slavery be permitted everywhere.

GravatarAs Steve Simels points out, there were warnings about the release of "Do The Right Thing." What did happen that summer in New York was the murder of Yousef Hawkins, a young black man who went into a white neighborhood to buy a car.

I remember the often reviled Al Sharpton leading a march through that part of town to show that black people should be able to go anywhere they wanted in NY. The reaction of the local white residents was unbelievable. They lined the streets waving watermelons and calling nigger.

Gravatar"And until that happens there is a tendency for the emotional parts of the brain to predominate."

I HATE YOU! YOU'RE RUINING MY LIFE!!!!

GravatarWhen did we go from holding back our support for him beacuse "he's not really black" to threatening an insurrection if he's nominated, and loses the general election? I missed the transition.

GravatarBo Gritz style survivalism is now considered mainstream by the repubs

Gravatar"Now mind you - they didn't come right out and say that *they* wouldn't vote for him for that reason.. See, that way they can't be accused of being racists.. sigh.."

I'm already tired of people playing the game of arguing that "America" isn't ready for a black President. As if they were qualified to speak for the nation! Bleh.

I think that accusing them of latent racism would just close their ears. Instead, I've started taking the line that they're "lending their personal power" to racism. Don't know yet if I'm getting through to anyone, seems like it's worth a shot though.

GravatarIf the "bad guys" are looting and what not then they are "bad guys". Heh.

Other than that the "penis extender" schtick is tired. Real tired. Looks like you spent way too much time in Europe, guy. My condolences.
