My brother in law got his first handgun in 1985, right after a neighbor up the street was murdered by Richard Ramirez.

I had a valuable lesson in life when my parents died and we had to sell of their "stuff." We gave away quite a bit to anyone who really wanted something but mostly, their stuff was just old - but not antique.

It is actually pretty damn funny when you think about it that they're seeing Obama as some kind of Black Messiah whose downfall will lead to a rebellion. I would say the real race-related question that merits discussion re Obama is will he even capture the lion's share of the black vote? He has studously avoided wading into the arena of race politcs, except in the most dog-whistle kind of ways, like adopting the "I have a dream" cadence in his victory speech in Iowa. White Southern Man that he is, Edwards probably offers a better package for the average black voter, and Hillary comes from an administration with a proven record of strong relations with black community leaders. Obama's platform is all squishy and vague. If he does get the bulk of the black vote, it will be his skin that got it for him and not anything that came out of his mouth, AFAICT. Makes for kind of an interesting sociological experiment.

BTW, I saw the Denzel Washington Great Debaters movie yesterday.
Much more interesting than I expected. It's not strictly a Hollywood feel good, David and Goliath little guy triumphs crowd pleaser shlockfest. It's actually an interesting look at a peculiar moment in American history, the time just prior to the contemporary Civil Rights movement.
It glosses over a lot, of course, but it's pretty smart and raises a lot of pertinent issues for our current historical moment....

Mom's dad was a Lutheran minister, Dad's paternal uncle was a methodist minister.
Funny thing is mom's parents were the conservative ones, though they never taught her racism. So mom was appalled and upset when, during a memorial service for MLK, grandma wouldn't sing We Shall Overcome. (grandma stood held and held hands, but wouldn't actually sing it).

I just read about them this week. I've got my own older photos/negs I need scanned, I'm thinking about using them.
Funny thing is, my parents died in 92/93, and my sister had those photos for 15 years before doing anything with them. I had stopped bugging her. And now the technology is even better and cheaper than it was 15 years ago, so it all works out.

At its core, racism is a manifestation of tribalism, and a fear of scarcity. Humans are deeply programmed to separate into "us" vs. "them" to survive. And it wasn't all that long ago that we still needed to - my mother's family would send all the cousins to live with whoever had a job during the Depression.
In an age of plenty, the lizard-brain still controls some people's reactions.

Just got here--has anyone discussed the NPR report about a NH rally last night, where several Dem candidates appeared? Hillary's campaign bought seats/tables in the middled and Obama's supporters were in cheaper seats.
When Hillary spoke, a said something pretty mild which might be applied to Obama, his supporters booed her. Then, when Obama took the stage, his supporters rushed the stage area and took over the Hillary supporters' area.
Now, I don't know if this was covered anywhere else--but, what will be made of that? His supporters were described as enthusiastic and young, but their actions were allowed to be seen as rude and--perhaps--revolutionary. Her supporters were described as more mature and less enthusiastic. One more mature Hillary female supporter was quoted as saying that she was disappointed all these young women didn't seem to care about having a female president, that they didn't know how much easier it was for them after all the work of the femninists' work in the 60's and onward.
So, is the a way of saying that Obama's youth corps may be a bit over the top? Or to paint Hillary's supporters as too old?
What were your reactions to this report? And have other MCMers covered this?

Well, to be fair to my in-laws, they were probably really expressing their true belief that other people would not vote for Obama for that reason. They tend to be easily swayed by family members (which I find very odd, I've never been influenced by family or friends in my political beliefs)- they are surrounded by flaming liberals (me, DH to some degree and his sister). Of course I have no idea what will actually happen when they go into the voting booth.

Why do you say that. The majority of folks I know in that realm, possibly including myself, have their insurance through their employer. Or do I not have a grasp of middle class again?

Actually, we fought a war to preserve the Union or assert States' rights. Slavery was not the proximate cause, although the war morphed more explicitly into that later, but even then more as a tactical thing (e.g., Emancipation, 54th Mass rgmt) than a goal. Reconstruction itself was only partly about civil rights...
I think we need to cast away our original impressions of Obama and give him a fair hearing.

Another way to put it is that people out of fear are clinging to a sinking ship. I work at a VERY progressive institution, and my health care benefits are slowly being shifted from the institution to me.

At the rate employer provided insurance is declining in coverage and rising in costs, there will be little if anything available and no one will have started a process for replacement until after they realize that.

"we" didn't fight a war over black people, that was the line used to get poor people to fight for the union. it worked. those same poor people weren't exactly welcoming or supportive of the newly freed's rights or that enthusiastic about giving them a equal seat at the employment or political table. what free blacks who did manage to make something of their lives after the war were quickly jim crowed back to near slavery. it took about a generation, but the blossoming post-civil war middle class of skilled former slaves setting up their own shops and whatnot was made to disappear.

I'm continuously giving them all a fair hearing. As I've said, I will be totally fine with any of the Dems and have contributed to Edwards and Dodd (wish he'd stayed in). Kucinich just happens to be the one who best matches my ideals and I think has a necessary message that has been drowned out in the rush to anoint the more corporate, acceptable candidates.

Edwards in talking about the Two Americas is much more graphic and specific. Obama seems more abstract and idealistic. Which is very appealing in that the young tend toward absolutes, while not always seeing shades of gray. They haven't been laid off--or at least not lost as much if they were.
Kevin Phillips wrote that he feard the people of this country would not really take their democracy back until there was another economic catastrophe similar to the Great Depression. We're not there yet.
BTW, I'm not thinking of young people as being less intelligent or perceptive--just thinking abou the studies of the mind which doesn't stop developing until mid-20's or so. And until that happens there is a tendency for the emotional parts of the brain to predominate. Which is why treating adolescents as adults in criminal cases is so bad, in my opinion.

As Steve Simels points out, there were warnings about the release of "Do The Right Thing." What did happen that summer in New York was the murder of Yousef Hawkins, a young black man who went into a white neighborhood to buy a car.
