Repost from below:
District 49-Olympia
Friend saying it was haphazard.... poorly-organized, the organizers appeared overwhelmed, people were confused about the rules, and that time for discussion was cut WAY too short (one minute per candidate)... One Hillary supporter showed up from another precinct to speak on her behalf. The votes were 71 for Obama, 19 for Hillary, remaining votes undecided.... Total people present approx. 100+. Delegate awards BELIEVED to be as follows:
6 for Obama
2 for Hillary
1 for undecided
Originially 5 for Obama, 2 undecided.... switched support to Obama.
NOTE-- this delegate count refers to county delegates... county delegates then proceed to state convention.

I also noted the CATO reference to 'more efficient and flexible compensation policies for workers'. More flexibility and efficiency, oddly, never, ever, ever redounds to workers' benefit. Bet you didn't know that.
Productivity rises in the private sector, year after year, as do corporate profits. Workers' salaries and benefits don't keep up. THe money's getting made; it's going somewhere. Not to the workers.

Mayor Quiet on Bid. Senator Not So Much.
By MICHAEL M. GRYNBAUM and JOHN HARWOOD
There are still outstanding questions about the fast-fading presidential dreams of Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg. Here are a few answers:
Yes, Senator Chuck Hagel was approached by the mayor about being No. 2 on an independent presidential ticket.
Yes, the mayor’s chances are diminished by the success of Senator John McCain, a moderate candidate who has emerged as the Republican front-runner.
Yes, NTodd, I already checked the lyrics, but honestly I have grasped the meaning of Yes songs more easily.

I must admit..... I caucused too today.
It so sucked.
Last time around, I was told there were only 25 or so people in attendance.
This time around they filled the entire cafeteria and had the whole thing had to be split into to separate rooms. The cafeteria and the gym. Four hundred at least.
I was forced! Forced! I say to be a delegate. What crap! I hate this! I didn't want to volunteer or get involved...... geez......
Eventually, people were told that they should step up to speak for their candidate. Once a volunteer was randomly selected, they were told they were allowed 60 seconds to speak. One person spoke for each candidate for sixty seconds and then discussion was closed.

The caucus was not intended for mass participation by the rabble. Until fairly recently it was the province of the courthouse gang - pols, operatives, moneybags etc.
In my neck of the woods they would do things like advertise the meeting in the paper like the law said, but in teeniney print buried in the back pages, time and place, like 'noon, under the First National Bank clock', then show up early, vote to relocate to some backroom where they would drink, smoke, make the deals and divide the spoils.
That is, until the MFDP did battle, which changed things considerably, much to the consternation of people I hate, haha.

Largent was a right wing fuckwad in Congress.
Gomez |
02.09.08 - 8:06 pm | #
Largent had kind of a funky political career, according to wiki:
One of his first bills was a "parental rights" bill that died in committee after it attracted opposition even from other Christian conservatives. Another one of his early bills would have abolished the federal tax code at the end of 2001, a measure that made Republicans appear fiscally irresponsible in the press. He opposed ending the 1996 federal government shutdown, and when it ended was one of the major players in an attempted coup against House Speaker Newt Gingrich. After the Republicans suffered heavy losses in the 1998 midterm elections, Largent was one of a group of Republican congressmen who drove Gingrich into retirement. He introduced a bill that would ban adoptions by gay and lesbian parents in Washington, D.C. He was criticized as anti-Catholic due to his line of questioning of a House of Representatives chaplain in 2000, though he defended his actions as not anti-Catholic.

OK, let's make sure I understand.
HRC wins a whole bunch of votes in her home state and CA, while O wins a large majority of the votes in smaller, red states - you know, the states we actually have to bring over - so hrc should be the nominee. Sure, maybe if she wins huge in OH and PA.
But, short of PA and OH going big for hrc, making a decision on that basis solely would kill a lot of the enthusiasm on our side. There's been a lot of discussion about O voters not coming out for hrc, screwing them over would be a great way to do just that.

Largent decided to run for Governor of Oklahoma in 2002. He easily won the Republican nomination and resigned his House seat to devote all his energy to the race. Initially seen as an overwhelming favorite against Democratic state senator Brad Henry, Largent lost a three-way race.
The surprise gubernatorial loss came as a result of three factors:[citation needed]
* the presence of a well-funded independent (a former Democrat) on the general election ballot;
* Henry's support of cockfighting, garnering a last minute endorsement by rural cockfighting interests who turned out in large numbers as the legality of cockfighting was on the ballot; and
* Largent's unfamiliarity with hostile press interviews, as he had been somewhat of a popular local celebrity in Tulsa. This led to what was perhaps his greatest misstep: swearing at an Oklahoma City television reporter who wanted to know where he was at the time of the September 11, 2001 attacks.[citation needed] Largent's office released a statement as if it were from Largent; it was then learned that Largent had been on a hunting trip and didn't find out about the events of 9/11 until a day or so later.
Largent lost to Henry by just under 7,000 votes in the three-way race.
Hey, it was just my weird neighborhood.

What helps Obama will be some momentum but also helping will be campaign time. He'll be able to do a lot more campaigning in these few states than he was on Super Tuesday.
Clinton on the other hand will want to just pretend February didn't happen and hope enough people go along.

While Obama wins Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Idaho, Utah, etc.

You are confusing state totals with demographics. The breakout Buchanan cites matches every other analysis I seen, including remarks from the candidates camps.
Hillary is strong among 'traditional' Democrats, including working people and the 'Reagan Democrats'. Obama is big with college-educated, utes etc.
The point is that Rachel is right about Nebraska not being a liberal bastion, and 'look Obama won!' - but the Dem will not carry Nebraska in November. Hasn't since 64. They won't carry Kansas. Hasn't since 64.
Pat is saying that Hillary's support is the basis for winning the general election, ie win the blue states Gore/Kerry won and add some purple states.
Makes sense to me, but I'm a sucker for the workers.

We don't have any history of the current set up in the D Party re: superdelegates not voting their state's outcome. So far, they always have.
What has happened in the past is the winner was determined ahead of the convention and the super delegates simply voted the way the state voted or caucused.
Now, it if's undetermined prior to the convention, we'll have a very interesting situation. How would Hillary's voters fill if she was ahead, but supers voted to go with Obama? Or the reverse?
Not too hot. So I get the feeling something will be worked out, as Dean has sort of suggested.

Minnesota is as liberal as Massachusetts (in most senses), and Obama killed here.
Equate that to the fact that we have a caucus system, or what...but it's got nothing to do with NE being particularly conservative.

Media spin. The media will run stories about him winning those 20,000 voters.
American voters tend to act like followers. people like to back the winner.

I think everyone can agree that either Hillary or Barack would be 1000X better than McCain.
My point was not to throw gas on a fire, but to ask whether it is valid to compare caucus results with either open or closed primary votes.
Delegates are delegates, of course, but it also matters what the voters say in the privacy of the voting booth.
Our daughter was afraid to go to the caucuses in MN because all her friends are for one candidate and she for the other and she would have had to state her preference openly.

These points (minus hyperbole) refer to facts found in polling studies, many of which are available to the public at pollsters' sites, CNN etc., available for your review. And they must match pretty close to the candidates' private internal polling based on their rhetoric shifts and media approach etc.
I haven't seen where anyone is giving some other basis which contradicts this. It's just how it's breaking out, you know? What it means is debateable of course, but the underlying voting is not somebody's 'thesis'.
