“There is still a long way to go,” said Nouriel Roubini, an economist at the Stern School of Business at New York University and chairman of the research firm RGE Monitor.
Mr. Roubini has long predicted the real estate downturn would cause a severe recession. He envisions foreclosures accelerating this year, and banks counting fresh losses. That could make them less able to lend and further slow economic activity, not just in the United States but around the world.
“We’re facing the risk of a systemic financial crisis,” Mr. Roubini said. “It’s not just subprime mortgages. The same kind of reckless lending has been occurring throughout the financial system. And it’s not only mortgages: Now it’s credit cards and auto loans, where we see problems increasing. The toxic junk is popping up everywhere.”

Of course the moneyed non-working libtards at Fark gave this a "stupid" tag, but here is an interesting piece on something we were talking about the other night, which is that Americans (and appearantly Canadians) view the service industry a modern license to treat people like serfs, at Tim Horton's. While we haven't worked there we would add that you get what you want anywhere when you ask for it clearly and concisely and without baggage from your troubled marriage. "Please" and "thankyou" are totally unnecessary, especially as passive aggressive bullshit, but your temporary slave cannot obey you if he or she cannot understand you.

The New York Times found 121 cases in which veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan committed a killing in this country, or were charged with one, after their return from war. In many of those cases, combat trauma and the stress of deployment — along with alcohol abuse, family discord and other attendant problems — appear to have set the stage for a tragedy that was part destruction, part self-destruction.
Three-quarters of these veterans were still in the military at the time of the killing. More than half the killings involved guns, and the rest were stabbings, beatings, strangulations and bathtub drownings. Twenty-five offenders faced murder, manslaughter or homicide charges for fatal car crashes resulting from drunken, reckless or suicidal driving.

i really, really wish hillary had come up in another time. i have no doubt, had we the fairness act in place and true, bipartisan civility a la the previous decades, she'd be everything i could want in our first woman president. i don't even fault her for choosing to present herself in the way she has in this race; although as a progressive i can't support her, i understand her logic. which is "win, and do what it takes to get there." that's ahem, ballsy.
i have the utmost respect for her as a woman. a cheating hubby everyone knows of, constant attacks from political enemies, a hostile and contemptuous press, 1/2 a nation harboring a razor-sharp hatred of her and wishing for her death and humiliation...no, she's a better woman than i am, clearly. i couldn't take that, nor would i even try.
hillary is a great woman, like churchill was a great man. both have serious political flaws, but i don't doubt that if anyone can save us, it's an unfettered hillary. i just don't think our corporate overlords are going to let her be herself. i don't blame her for that, tho. hillary, whatever else her failings, isn't responsible for the long, ever more pressured shift to the right in this country. no, i laud her for surviving and thriving in such a reality.

The bankers have, as a group, utterly surrendered to greed.
We have seen it proposed that modern finance as an industry is well disguised but complete corruption and scamming. It's certainly very hard to dismiss that as cynicism or oversimplification since the most reliable prediction for the past three decades has been that these Ponzi fuckers are lying to you, stealing from ytou, and doing it on a far larger scale than you've suspected.
Three-quarters of these veterans were still in the military at the time of the killing. The bankers have, as a group, utterly surrendered to greed.
So now the Reich can start blaming Jews?
Midway through Douglas Miler's You Can't Do Business With Hitler, and besides the parallels between Nazi totalitarian machinations and certain modern imitators, one of the most interesting points is what dishonest double dealing shysters the Nazi financiers were. They would arrange their trade with foreign countries so as to dump surplus materials, grabbing up whatever they wanted and leaving the seller expecting payment with materials such as automobiles which never came, defeating competition with the kind of price subsidies only a totalitarian state can offer, and their only logic in their economic work as in everything else was what was most profitable at that moment. And of course because this is Germany, at any minute the Generalstab can step in and stop sale of a militarily necessary material without explanation, or dump stuff on a market to grab up something else they need. Almost all the near-constant focus on Hitler in American historical memory is rooted to either military or atrocity stories, but Germany was an industrial and business powerhouse almost from reunification and the bastids certainly did a lot of damage pulling themselves out of the depression they created with their first major act of megalomaniacal psychopathic egotism, their overprinting of money to screw over their conquerors after WWI.

I am sure that Lucianne Moneymountain's son has a chapter on this liberal evil fascism.
Honestly, there is one son of a bitch we would like to walk up to, identify as Iraq vets, and just freaking punch him. He is not a journalist or a commentator. He has absolutely nothing to say about anything.
That Roubini - one of the DFH bloggers - gets print time in the Grey Lady is a telling revision in the status quo.
He is known to many in the traditional media from his tenure in the Clinton administration.

Quick work, boys, thanks for persevering
This is interesting. The leftist conventional wisdom is that the Nazis both set the fire and exploited the hell out of it; the "sensible" anti-leftist conventional wisdom is that the Nazis certainly exploited the hell out of it while they did not actually set it themselves; the inarguable history is that Hitler and his most important assistants were photograohed at the scene before fire crews arrived. By the way the prosecuting attorney at the time was WWI ace and most laughable over-Nazi Goering.

osecutors in Wisconsin are considering charges after a Twin Cities man allegedly left his 1½-year-old son in a van outside a strip club for several hours.
The complaint alleged the 45-year-old Maplewood man lounged inside the Cajun Club in St. Croix County while temperatures outside dipped into the low 20s.
The club's manager said a customer entering the club told staff there was a baby crying in a van outside. After finding the doors of the van locked, the manager called 911.

This is actually the general attitude in Tailand toward its famous entertainment industry. Given the warped view Americans usually are given of the millenially ancient Tai culture, it is surprising to come across their rigid Confucian (strengthened by Indian and Muslim) mores. Moronic Christians tell the police on earnest girls trying to get over and succeed only temporarily jailing what are honest working citizens; somehow the missionary set never picks up on the awful economic options (they usually make far less in sweatshops than distributing soapies).

You know what really bothers me about Kucinich's challenge of the NH vote? It's not verifying the vote in itself. That can never hurt.
It's that the way it was done comes off as an accusation that Clinton cheated. If she is the nominee, it will play into the groundwork the Rethugs are already laying to accuse Dems of vote fraud. I can see that spreading to any Dem that gets the nom.
While optical scanners are electronic, they aren't the major worry that touch screen is because they do have a paper trail.
Kucinich and the other candidates should have gotten together ahead of time and announced that because of past worries about electronic voting, they're volunteering to have Dem elections audited. That would have drawn attention to the problem and established their honesty as a party.
But that would have taken some leadership in the party, I guess.

If Clinton is the nominee, and if she were to win the election in a close contest, the Republicans would challenge the count in every state. And the media would be cheering them on.

Temporary or long term?

permanent.
here's the deal, and a warning to all you fat-eaters and salt-lovers who don't exercise. on the day before xmas (thank you jeebus!) he woke up, literally blind. the cause was a blood clot, as the eye specialist said, "a stroke of the eye." although no doctor is willing to say "exactly" what caused it, most of them agree (and i've taken him to many these last weeks) that diet, lack of exercise, and an unwillingness to accept that the elderly must take aspirin daily, are likely factors.
take your health seriously. most of us aren't going to go in a 'blaze of glory' in a single painless heart attack. indeed, most of us will end up forgotten, on a skimpy bed in some gov't run hovel, cared for by underpaid people who don't speak english and don't care to deliever the pain relieving drugs on time. i won't let that happen to my dad, and i'm willing to sacrifice anything to avoid that for him, but the rest of you don't have me in your life, so watch out.
/end soapbox/

no and that's just the point. they are politicians. you know what you are going to get with hillary. and you know you are not going to get what edwards promises.
with obama there is an undefined choice. i read his books, i mostly don't agree with him. it's not the right way to be doing it, but lets face it, a lot of picking your next president is a hi school personality contest. let's hope "we" (and here is the rub) don't pick the guy we'd like to have a beer with.
