You know, my mother, who by her own admission is not the sharpest knife in the drawer, instantly asked (although not in these words) how the fuck are road maintenance costs going to be paid if we cut the gas tax.
She also instantly figured out that 18.4 cents off a 3 dollar gallon of gas is not a 20% decrease in the cost of a gallon of gas.
Apprentice to Darth Holden |

It's 18.2 cents a gallon. The difference between 3.79 a gallon and 3.99 a gallon isn't that much.

10 Debate Questions John McCain Will Never Be Asked:
1. Do you agree with Pastor John Hagee that war with Iran is the fulfillment of biblical prophecy?
2. Doesn't your legendary temper make you too dangerous to be trusted with the presidency of the United States?
3. Doesn't your confusion regarding basic facts about the war in Iraq, including repeatedly citing a nonexistent Al Qaeda-Iran alliance, make you unfit for command?
4. Given your past adultery, should Americans consider you a moral exemplar of family values?
5. Doesn't your flip-flop on Jerry Falwell being an "agent of intolerance" show your opportunistic pandering to the religious right?
6. Given your wealth and privileged upbringing, aren't you - and not Barack Obama - the elitist?
7. What is your religion, really? And has the answer in the past changed as the South Carolina primary approached?
8. Didn't President Bush betray you with his signing statement on the Detainee Treatment Act? You claim to be against torture, but aren't you a hypocrite for voting "no" on the Senate waterboaring ban?
9. Why did you flip-flop on the Bush tax cuts you twice opposed? Why do you now support making them permanent for the wealthiest Americans who need them least?
10. With the economy tanking, shouldn't Americans be concerned over your past statements that "the issue of economics is not something I've understood as well as I should?"

It would be much more reasonable to get rid of the income tax for gross wages under $50,000 and tax gasoline $10 a gallon. Gas is going to $10 a gallon no matter what so it can either go to the oil companies or go to the health, education and welfare of Americans.

The Katrina aftermath was the pilot project, where they tested how far they could boost margin and what the response would be. When we all sucked it right up without a blink, they knew it was time to cash in the oil industry at maximum escalating return. And then board the rocket ships for Aldebaran, I guess.

So McCain want the 18.5 cents a gallon tax eliminated?
Why? My gas here went up twice that in the last four weeks. The oil companies will just delay rising prices for about two to four weeks and collect the difference themselves. Meanwhile, the funding for roads and bridges will be hurt badly, and the tax will never be replaced. More bridge collapses, anyone?

Jeebus, the price of gas went up 25 ($3.45) cents in one frigin day here in Minnesota, WTF would cutting the tax do, other than funnel another 18.5 cents per gallon in to the pockets of Big Oil. Oh yeah, never mind.

One action by the Bush administration that would probably have an immediate impact on rising crude oil prices (driving them lower) would be the release of crude oil from our nation's Strategic Oil Reserve to domestic oil refineries.
With OPEC unwilling to increase production and with oil companies in the U.S. reporting low reserves, this is the only way the Bush administration (if they cared about U.S. citizens) could indicate to the oil futures speculators (responsible for a third of the high per-barrel prices) that per-barrel prices over $100 is unacceptable. Of course, the Bush administration won't do anything, because they could care less about U.S. consumers, as they proven over and over again.
