"What does Barack Obama want?" Dodd rhetorically asked reporters Friday in Hartford. "He's talked about reconciliation, healing, bringing people together. I don't think he'd necessarily want to spend the first month of this president-elect period, this transition period, talking about a Senate seat, particularly if someone is willing to come forward and is willing to be a member of your family in the caucus in that sense."
Obama's tax-plan as he described it yesterday was precisely what was up on his website for months.

DT'd:
Most senators are receptive to Lieberman's argument that allowing him to stay represents the type of unity that President-elect Barack Obama espouses.
The aide also said that Lieberman was not offered a subcommittee, as has been reported, but rather was offered chairmanship of a lesser committee. He didn't specify which one he was referring to. However, if Lieberman left Homeland Security, Sen. Daniel Akaka (D-Hawaii) would be next in line and would have to give up Veterans Affairs, which would then be open for Lieberman.
There is no part of this that isn't horseshit.

ThinkProgress has this turd from Sen. Evan Bayh concerning Lieberman:
BAYH: And I think if Joe came before the caucus and said look, if I said some things that came as offensive, I’m sorry, but they were, you know heartfelt in my support of John McCain. I think we had to just let bygones be bygones. We’re going to need him on healthcare and energy independence and education and a whole lot of other things.
I think we had just to let both Bayh and Lieberman find a nice short dock to take a long walk on. Creeps.

One final anecdote from that Newsweek series:
The day of the third debate, Palin refused to go onstage with New Hampshire GOP Sen. John Sununu and Jeb Bradley, a New Hampshire congressman running for the Senate, because they were pro-choice and because Bradley opposed drilling in Alaska. The McCain campaign ordered her onstage at the next campaign stop, but she refused to acknowledge the two Republican candidates standing behind her.

"Obama said nothing yesterday to suggest that his actual tax plan might change, though of course it might. Even if you buy the idea that he was spinning his plan slightly differently than he was during the campaign (he wasn't), that doesn't change the fact the plan itself has yet to change. But for Chris Matthews and the gang this was evidence that maybe Obama wasn't as much of a socialist as they thought."
While I carry no brief for Tweety, I think your the tone of this comment is a bit over the top given the question asked of Obama and his answer. Obama was asked directly whether, given the state of the economy, he still intended to raise taxes on people making over $250k/year. Note that the question was about the future, so what is the basis for making the point that "the fact the plan itself has yet to change"? More importantly, Obama did not directly answer a direct question. Instead, he talked about the fact that his plan will produce a "net tax cut". We are rightly celebrating the fact that we've elected a very, very smart man who uses language very precisely . . . so are we really going to go off the edge when pundits notice variation in Obama's language when responding to questions about his intentions?

Democrat Tom Perriello yesterday declared victory in his challenge against Rep. Virgil H. Goode Jr., a longtime incumbent in southern Virginia, although Goode has not conceded and the close contest might be headed for a recount.
"I am proud and humbled to be elected as the next congressman from the fifth district of Virginia," Perriello said in a statement.
According to unofficial results from the Virginia State Board of Elections, Perriello was up by 745 votes yesterday, with 50.9 percent of the vote, compared with 49.85 percent for Goode. The results will not be certified until Nov. 24, after which the losing party will be able to request a recount.

Their RS banner showing a strip through the center of the country all in red. This section consists of 33 states, of which only 9 & 2/3's are actually red (Nebraska 1/3 blue now) leaving 23 & 1/3 blue.

Gonna be a Big Dumb Four Years! Even That One can't change that.
No, but WE CAN... Look, it's going to be extremely difficult for the talking heads to remain as willfully stupid in their "discourse" (if discourse is defined as the retarded ramblings of a seriously maladjusted, pre-teenesque propaganda mentality) when pitted against a seriously intelligent, articulate president and his staff -- provided that they all approach press conferences, briefings and comments like they are addressing adults -- as has been the case throughout the Obama campaign...
The difference is night and day... it was relatively easy for the yapping heads to spout nonsense and put up false arguments because with Bush and his minions providing the sound bites... everything coming out of their mouths was designed to be unintelligible gibberish...
There will be a stark difference set between the Obama folks and the yapping heads -- the difference between sense and nonsense...

Tweety grew on me, yesterday he was just trying to convince the wingnuts that Obama wasn't going to take their money and redistribute it to the middle class.
I was also under the impression that Obama tax plan would raise money by upping the taxes on the upper 5% and therefore allow the middle class tax cuts.
But yesterday I came under the impression that Obama could lower middle income taxes without raising the upper 5% tax bracket, at least temporarily until the economy stabilized.

Kevin Phillips was on Bill Moyers' Journal last night and noted the missing player at Obama's press conference Friday. Lots of investor class advisers (plus new chief of staff Emanuel very up front and visible, and VP Biden), but no one from labor. Phillips said Robert Reich sometimes addresses labor issues, but he is not of labor in the way the Banker Boyz and banksters are of the controlling investor class (which does not include workers with money in IRA's and 401K's--we have zero clout; to call us part of the "investor class" is Bizarro World terminology).
Phillips did not sound very optimistic. In the past he has said it will probably require something as dire as the Great Depression to shake American voters out of their propaganda-filled world view and see that there needs to be real change. So far, this has not been bad enough is what I took from his discussion. Good segment.
He closed with "We live in an age of disappointment." Oooofffff!
On PBS later Friday night was Charlie Rose with a segment telling in its way: A discussion with two historians and one political journalist waxing eloquent in their praise of OBama. Michael Beschloss, Alan Brinkley, and David Remnick were still filled with the glow of Tuesday night in Grant Park, Chicago--altho' Remnick said that in a week or so journalists would "climb out of the tank" and begin to actually analyze Obama and his actions. (Hey, first time I've heard a journalist admit to being in the tank! He seemed pleased to be there.)
Brinkley said Obama was the greatest orator to become president in the last 100 or so years. FDR was "ok" and Reagan was great but didn't write his own words. (Obama does?? And he knows this how? This is from a historian!)
My late kitty Sammy Jean would jump up on my bed every night and drop her fake mouse toy on my pillow.

Feldman: What I saw the other day is the domino effect of Kerry as Secretary of State might put the Democratic caucus in a position where Senator Feingold would be the next up to chair the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and of course that poses a whole series of problems...
Mitchell: Why does it pose a series of problems?
Feldman: Well, because of Senator Feingold's opposition to the war... I think that would immediately then raise some issues for the caucus and for leader Reid . . .
Mitchell: But the president [elect] of the United States is opposed to the war...

Steve Young, the former QB for the 49ers, is a direct descendant of Brigham Young.
Fuck off, bitch.

I can see my econ degree from my chair. It's covering up a stain on the wall, that's about as much good as it has ever done!

Oh, wow. Chris Matthews took the plunge into the dismal science and opted in for macro econ as well as micro!
Ye gods, before the press conference, Matthews was telling us that he'd taken economics in college and that there were two things that Obama could do.
1. Fix teh economy
2. Profit!

Hell, I took two years of Marxist econ in college. I can't remember much of it-- I can't remember what I had for breakfast this morning--- but I probably took something away from it.

Good for him. It's great that a prominent Mormon would oppose that publicly.

I hope Matthews runs for the PA senate seat in 2010. It'll get him off tv. He'd run as a repub, wouldn't he?

What a sanctimonious piece of garbage.

His brother (who we know from Chris' testimony, is very smart) is a Rethug.
Chris worked for Tip O'Neill...I imagine he'd be a center-right Dem at best.

I feel like the it may be revealed that his father is Malcolm X. That is why he wanted to keep it secret. He knew if people found out before the election, he would lose votes for two reasons. 1-His father is MALCOLM X! 2- People might be mad he put a false one on the interenet and lied. Of course, now he can spin it and people would feel sorry for him."
Surveys show that about 20% of the population of the U.S. shows signs of mental illness at one time or another. Roughly 20% of the population supports right-wing authoritarian assholes. Coincidence?
We report, you decide.

Gawd, Armando's a dick.
Wow. Interesting reaction to someone pointing out the MCM thinks Russ Feingold must be "controlled." I guess antiwar Dems should go under the bus, as well?

The media has been centrist for some time long before this election
Bedbug | 11.08.08 - 1:03 pm | #
Or, center right. Actually, corporatist to my thinking. Anything that will keep them in power.
What they're trying to do now is box Obama into being centrist to center-right.
They're trying to make sure he doesn't listen to libs and actual progressives. Or at least doesn't act on what they tell him or want to achieve.

can't we get rid of Chris Matthews by stapling him and Lieberman to a chicken and sending them into traffic with pockets filled with milk bottles?
okay okay I know, ... too dangerous and unrealistically cruel to the chicken it's true but ... can this be modified?
