GravatarWhat could the Iraqis possibly know about ensuring the security that we want them to take charge of?

Wait, something wrong there . . .

GravatarMP the same for me. I had no idea that I went to a very privileged school. I got a really great education.

It was amazing to me that when I was teaching theater the kids would come to me for help with their English assignments. Then I found out that the English teachers there had no idea that
the Canterbury Tales are a Frame tale, and that they assigned essays with the topic "given what you know of his behavior would Beowulf have gone to heaven"? Pretty scary.

GravatarLast time I checked, management were employees too.

My bad - I should have said that unions prevent employees from being as productive as OWNERSHIP wants them to be.

GravatarDon't killfile me - I am just pissed at two random things this week:
1. College education costs have gone up 40% in Michigan since 2000
2. The Detroit Tigers are pimping for a charter school in Detroit. (that one just pisses me off royally. They can make a difference in Public Education too if they want.)

When someone starts denigrating teachers I just go ballistic: damn! The job is hard enough to do without people carping at our heels about our laziness and the fact that we are overpaid in spite of not receiving a raise in pay since 1999. (Not even a cost of living)

Just pisses me off.

GravatarActually, I kind of like Matthew's suggestion. Sounds like a winner to me.

That would be true only if the US were seriously looking for a reason to leave.

Instead, however, this administration is constantly looking for reasons to stay.

GravatarThe Virginia Beach public school system has a 1 billion dollar annual budget.

Gravatarcobb county is one of the richest in the atlanta area, and walton high is the best school in ga (statistically).

and it sucks.

Two kinds of public schools:

1. war zones, where teachers can only try to keep the students from killing or impregnating each other prematurely.

2. glorified SAT preps with football teams.

This is what people want. They may say that education is important and that children are our future, but what they want and get is a largely empty ritual and social promotion that gets the kids off to college and out of their parents' lifestyle.

If I took over education in America tomorrow, I would rule it with an iron fist. I would track mercilessly, I would divide the capable students from the slavering animals that hold them back, I would let faculties take back power from administrators, I would insist that US students finally come up to the standards of the third world, and I would require that all testing be done in person by human beings, not scantrons.

And I would be assassinated within four months.

Those start this week. Xmas sales start in September. Your must report back to consumer training h.q. for embedded chip adjustment.

Gravatardirk, as a former teacher and a paralegal involved in one of the education equity cases where basically NYC students sued the State because they were not getting their fair share of the State tax dollar, I assure you it is quite a bit more complicated. Education in NYS is funded through local property taxes and the State kicks in, but not dollar for dollar. And some districts need extra $ for ESL and some for state of the art swimming pools/ Three guess who gets what and the first two don't count.

GravatarMissed the earlier discussions. Kids are my witness that I predicted the iraq invasion fall 2000..."we're in deep shit if bush gets in there guys."

GravatarYour must report back to consumer training h.q. for embedded chip adjustment.

No way, man. I'm pulling myself out of the Matrix.

GravatarActually, I kind of like Matthew's suggestion. Sounds like a winner to me.

well, maybe except for the "shaking hands" part. I can't think of anyone in Iraq I would blame for not wanting to shake hands with us.

Even though we made the mess, we can't fix what's wrong in Irsq. We have a national mentality of conquest; by and large, Americans believe that they are ethically superior to the rest of the world, that our system is the best possible system, and that we are intrinsically more precious than all those people out there in the rest of the world. We're no good at peacekeeping, which is precisely what this mission calls for. There's no well-defined enemy; this is not a war. For our government and military leadership to continue to pretend that it is is a prescription for failure.

We should go to the UN, admit that we screwed up, and ask for help.

GravatarI think Bush's best move would be to say that he'd had a vision in which God told him to pull out of Iraq.

with kids as criminals so often - bring back the military school option
Charter schools are selective and by that are eating away the public dollars afforded to lower income schooling.

Tracking is seen as "evil" but we have people who publicly admit that they believe that the gifted kids should be in the classrooms functioning as teacher's assistants - UNREAL -the decline of gifted programs and the infiltration of emotionally berift kids into the mainstream is killing education altogether.

We have a district in financial crisis and they decide to can the para-professionals because the 100K +/per annum admin. layer have crisis=proof contracts.

But since not one of those is true, I think I would prefer to skip the part where we measure our pros and cons as a people and work on doing things right.

GravatarTeacher: pay attention, you're going to need to know this.

one quarter of my junior year of college, I had a course with a professor who found a classroom with chalkboards on all four walls, and scheduled two two-hour lectures a week, with a short break at the one-hour mark. he did this so that he could cover all four walls with fairly longhaired math.

one day, about fifteen minutes into the second hour, the professor turned to the class and solicited questions. the fellow sitting next to me in the back of the room raised his hand and asked politely: "Professor Epstein, is there any reason why we will ever need to know how to do this integral?"

Epstein scratched his head, looked at the board, and replied: "Some day, when you are teaching undergraduates, you will need to know how to do this integral."

GravatarThough anecdotally, I think children are getting somewhat more sophisticated at an earlier age. We had our niece and nephew visit for awhile recently.

Goddamn, I don't remember at twelve being as wired in to all of the minutia of adult oriented stuff as these kids evidently are.

Why would it be ridiculous ?

GravatarBut since not one of those is true, I think I would prefer to skip the part where we measure our pros and cons as a people and work on doing things right.

Part of doing things right is acknowledging the wrong that you've done.

But since we have such a hard time acknowledging and apologizing the simplest of state-sponsored criminal activity, like concerted murder of our native peoples, testing chemicals on our poor, and enslaving an entire race, it's important that we continue to be reminded of that so that it never happens again.

Even though Dayton's public transit system has declined over the years, usually I don't mind not having a car.

But when I'm given almost no notice that I no longer have ride tomorrow for groceries, then I get annoyed.

I'm not really able to go today, so if no alternate transit is arranged, I'll have to leave work early to do this by bus.

Thats when it sucks.

The greater problem is the despair inherent in the idea that this is all these kids can look to as a goal in life. Pimping, drug dealing, or an unrealistic expectation of a glorious sports career. I don't recall any one of them ever saying that they wanted to be a teacher or an accountant or a mechanic.

GravatarI hate stuff like that. Either the teacher is just going through the motions or he/she is teaching stupid things.

well, he *was* teaching technology that was rapidly becoming obsolete.

fortunately, I was also taught the technology that replaced it, albeit by a holocaust denier.

I know. That's my point. Kids are very serious. Dead serious. Everything is serious when you are a kid. Locker assignments are major serious.

Kids, being powerless, will try anything that might work to get from A to B. If not doing classwork is the goal, then some kids will try or say anything. My brother was like that. He always argued with the dad about how school was dumb and wasn't teaching him anything he didn't know and how he didn't have to know what they taught.

He was about 11 at the time.

If he was a finalist in American Idol, and not Charlemagne's grandpappy, you'd get better results.

GravatarMy one visit out west, in part, included a ride with a guy who picked up us two gals hitchhiking. He was an arcade game repair guy and he put thousands of miles in on a given week (this was the pacific northwest), Our ride with him covered the ground between the Columbia River basin outside of Portland Ore. and a small mt town in Washington were a rainbow festival was taking place.

At least that's an argument from putative authority.

But his argument was from a wild supposition that was almost certainly untrue for at least 99% of the students.

Gravatarit has become unfasionable to call sheets.

GravatarYou need both to live in AZ.

ditto Tennessee and Alabama.

but freeways clogged with idling Lexi cry out for some sort of solution, and passenger rail isn't it.

some day we'll have smart freeways capable of managing our traffic and driving our cars for us.

I don't know how many of us will be able to afford to drive on them, though.

lay that at the feet of the media/culture/fucking commercialized society not the kids themselves.

problem is that even there, the jobs are for the select few with plenty of territorial gun fire as deciders/hirers.

Gravatar"Kids are very serious. Dead serious. Everything is serious when you are a kid. Locker assignments are major serious."

granted. now tell me - you are faced with a kid who wants to grow up to be a stripper. She refuses to do work, instead asking you what position you fucked your wife in in order to make your kids. ask her to be more respectful and she'll tell you to fuck off. call her parent and get ok I'll talk to her or no answer. send her to the dean and get back a note saying you need to improve your classroom management. send her to the counselor and she refuses to go. talk to her friends to see if they can reach her and they refuse to help (but are sympathetic) kick her out and get an obscene tirade.

all this has a bad effect on the learning of the rest of the class. what would you do?

yes this is a real kid.

Who would (no offense) ?

In junior high school most kids have fairly unbelievable goals -- astronaut, baseball player, president of Coca Cola, beauty queen.

If I met an 8th grader who said he wanted to be a teacher, accountant or mechanic, I'd think the kid was messed up.

School and education is not about what job you want when you graduate. It's about your life. And your life is not your job.

If your life is your job, what happens when you get laid off ?

Or most places in the US.

Being an older city, Dayton's had public transit for eons, so it least it had something to start with.

At the post office the other day, I was helping a new boxholder work out the combination on her box - which even as I did so I knew would drive out my own combination. It did. After 12 years on the same box I couldn't remember the combination to save my soul. Had to go humiliate myself to the desk clerk....

I believe you.

If she told me to fuck off, I would just not let her in my class anymore. If I was forced to have her in class, I would file a grievance and/or transfer to another school.

GravatarThat is not the same thing as apologizing to the sainted countries of this world which was the comment I was objecting to.

That's what you said, Snow.

And where did I use the word "sainted"? Where did I say that every other country is innocent of committing crimes on a grand scale? I was only speaking to our responsibility as USers. I'd be stupid to speak for any other country in the world.

So don't put words in my mouth. It's very unbecoming.

I made sure that we slept in shifts!

I used to hitch a lot before crack became epidemic. Once stories of crazed SOBs who killed for 5 bucks were widespread, my and my girlfriends stopped hitching. Too bad because we had such great times meeting people and outtalking them.

My peeps and I were high IQ chicks in halters so our prey never knew what was about to hit them!!!!

Gravatar"If she told me to fuck off, I would just not let her in my class anymore. If I was forced to have her in class, I would file a grievance and/or transfer to another school."

I got told to fuck off on a daily or occasionally hourly basis.

I did not have the authority to kick a kid out. only management can do that.

someone finally did pull the kid out, but not until march.

GravatarIf she told me to fuck off, I would just not let her in my class anymore.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

If I was forced to have her in class, I would file a grievance and/or transfer to another school.

After that, good luck finding a job. Administrators will punish you for making more work for them. And, if you have a reputation ...
.

GravatarAnd, if you have a reputation ...

If anything happens to the kid you can be held responsible.

Gravatargood grief

we are two sheets to the wind down here

Gravatar"Administrators will punish you for making more work for them."

I had a kid refuse to work, tell me to fuck off when I tried to get him to, and walk out of the class when I insisted.

I filed a disciplinary referral on him and it came back marked "this is a classroom management issue".

with all due respect anyone who says "I just wouldn't put up with that" is not a teacher.

Gravatar"If anything happens to the kid you can be held responsible."

yep - if you tell the kid to "get out" without sending them somewhere and they raise hell somewhere else in the school it's your ass.

Gravatar"high IQ chicks in halters"

Gravatar“He told Bush that if Petraeus continues doing that he would arm Shiite Militias. Bush told al-Maliki to calm down,” according to the lawmaker who said he was told of the exchange by al-Maliki.

I disagree with the COC's suggestion, he really should have told him to "Knock off this shit!", that would be the more diplomatic solution.

GravatarI know I discussed this on a prior thread but here goes:

Cal Ripken, Jr. who is getting inducted into the Hall of Fame, did NOT save baseball after the 1994 strike.

In fact, his team, the Orioles, were responsible for nearly ruining baseball. Baseball needs a salary cap, like football, so that the same teams don't play in the playoffs every year. The Orioles opposed the salary cap.

So F the Orioles and F Ripken.

GravatarI said: Because ever man and country is an island unto themselves; and we're the only bad apples in this barrel of monkeys.

You said: Yeah. That's exactly what I said/implied.

If that was sarcastic, then it was a misinterpretation . . . not fucking selective reading.
