Now he's reading Canterberry Tales and it sounds like Latin.

GravatarIn case you haven't seen this:

U.S. raids Baghdad slum; 26 Iraqis die

BAGHDAD - Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki condemned a U.S. raid Saturday in Baghdad's Shiite Sadr City slum — a politically sensitive district for him — in which American troops searching for Iranian-linked militants sparked a firefight the U.S. said left 26 Iraqis dead.

The U.S. military said all those killed in the fighting were gunmen, some of them firing from behind civilian cars. But an Iraqi official put the death toll lower, at eight, and said they were civilians. Residents also said eight civilians were killed in their homes, angrily accusing American troops of firing wildly during the pre-dawn assault.

Sadr City is the Iraqi capital's largest Shiite neighborhood — home to some 2.5 million people — making U.S. raids there potentially embarrassing for al-Maliki's Shiite-led government. The district is also the stronghold of the Mahdi Army, a militia loyal to anti-American cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, who was once al-Maliki's ally.

"The Iraqi government totally rejects U.S. military operations ... conducted without prior approval from the Iraqi military command," al-Maliki said in a statement concerning the Sadr City raid. "Anyone who breaches the military command orders will face investigation."

snip
Also Saturday, the military announced that two American soldiers were charged with the premeditated murder of three Iraqis and with planting weapons on the bodies to cover up the slayings, which took place between April and June near Iskandariyah, 30 miles south of Baghdad.

If only the Rs had listened to Jack Murtha - last year, instead they mocked and smeared him for daring to challenge the failed policies of Bushco. Stop the madness and bring home all the troops now!!

Cut off funding - if the Rs don't go along with the new Iraq resolution in July.

Camping is rarely fun. You're hiding from dive bombing mosquitoes, and in the morning, somebody always wakes up first and rattles everything that can be rattled, preventing the whole time they're trying to be quiet. As you wake up, you realize you're in a pool of sweat, and there's no way in hell you're gonna catch any more sleep.

They can't afford cable.

GravatarIn many respects, Michael Moore's new movie, "Sicko," is like a trial for those who oversee health care in the United States.

The industry _ doctors, drug makers, hospitals, insurers _ is charged with greed and putting personal interests above patients'. Moore heard from thousands of people who had maddening and heartbreaking brushes with this system.

As chief prosecutor, Moore lets them do most of the talking and weaves their stories into the film with wit, compassion and humor.

But one aspect missing from the film is the defense. Do not expect to hear anyone speak well of the care they received in the U.S.

The great thing about complete and utter bullshit like this is, anyone who reads it (who isn't already a bought-and-paid-for moronic brownshirt fuck) will say "what in Christ's name are these idiots jabbering about?"

Fascinating backstory by Amy Goodman on how the Pentagon Papers actually got published--and Sen. Mike Gravel, when still a senator, was able to get the papers into the Congressional Record which meant a publisher could get them into print with less fear of government actions against the publisher.

Wow.

People took actions back then, and were willing to pay the consequences if necessary of those actions, to fight against the war and against the excesses of the Nixon admininstration.

There actually were people in the Congress who believed in oversight and accountability. There were judges who took law breaking by government officials seriously as well.

Digby's comments today about Silverstein's LATimes column about how the press wants to accepted by and acceptable to the power elite really hits it. On top of everything esle, we have a really bad MCM* in general.

GravatarSome FOOKIN Trool above linked to the AP article on Moore's Movie: May I?

The industry _ doctors, drug makers, hospitals, insurers _ is charged with greed and putting personal interests above patients'. Moore heard from thousands of people who had maddening and heartbreaking brushes with this system.

As chief prosecutor, Moore lets them do most of the talking and weaves their stories into the film with wit, compassion and humor.

Well, now, that sort of sounds like an endorsement to me. But, remember boys and girls, this is the Associated (Compromised) Press. The article continues . . .

But one aspect missing from the film is the defense. Do not expect to hear anyone speak well of the care they received in the U.S. On the other hand, patients and doctors from Canada, Britain, France and Cuba marvel at their health care.

And two plus two equals what? No one has ever said that you cannot receive excellent medical care in the USA. That basic premise is as stupid as a MENSA application on the President's desk! My GOD! Do they really have to burn straw men to light a fire to keep their toes warm?

Shit. Assholes. Every. Damned. One. Of. Them.

Well, actually, it is, especially in the health insurance industry. Friend of a friend got cancer, and it was fairly far along when it was found. Her insurance company continually put roadblocks in her way to getting to the kind of specialists who just might be able to help her live a bit longer. That was not economically beneficial to the insurance company. The faster she died, the better for them.

And, yes, I do not know all the details, but this seems to have been the outcome if not the strategy.

GravatarWhat this means is higher property taxes because the public hospitals have to take in the "vagrants". Meaning that the county has to pick up the tab, letting every one pay the bill anyway.

Yup. The uninsured do get care, ultimately, and it is paid for by others. Sometimes taxpayers, sometimes people who buy insurance. But in both cases the care the uninsured get is often too late and more expensive than if the condition had been looked at earlier. It's almost always given at ERs, too, which bill a lot higher than ordinary physician offices would.

It is actually quite threatening to moneyed interests if too many of us do, therefore the scarring is deliberately promoted to serve the existing system.

How tragic that so many who are victims are manipulated into allegiance with the victimizers.

GravatarMichael Moore shouldn't be playing fast and loose with this number. He said 47 million on Larry King and in the film he says 'about 50 million.'

Let's go to the video (look! a link to a source!):

August 29, 2006

THE NUMBER OF UNINSURED AMERICANS IS AT AN ALL-TIME HIGH

Data released today by the Census Bureau show that the number of uninsured Americans stood at a record 46.6 million in 2005, with 15.9 percent of Americans lacking health coverage. “The number of uninsured Americans reached an all-time high in 2005,” said Robert Greenstein, executive director of the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. “It is sobering that 5.4 million more people lacked health insurance in 2005 than in the recession year of 2001, primarily because of the erosion of employer-based insurance.”

Census data show that 46.6 million Americans were uninsured in 2005, an increase of 1.3 million from the number of uninsured in 2004 (45.3 million). The percentage who are uninsured rose from 15.6 percent in 2004 to 15.9 percent in 2005. The number of children who are uninsured rose from 7.9 million in 2004 to 8.3 million in 2005.

Hmm, 2005 numbers show EXACTLY what Moore reported. I wonder the chances that fewer people are uninsured two years later?

answer: stupidity and fear. played up by the media and medical industry so much that the mere words "socialized healthcare" bring images of stalinist gulags where babies are raped by orcs.

GravatarThe thought that people don't understand that health care for everyone in this country is not a good thing for this country is beyond me.

Not only that, but there is a very good conservative (read heartless) case for universal coverage, too. First, it would relieve the auto industry firms which are now paying more for health insurance than for steel. The burden would be spread more equally. Second, it would improve the quality of the labor force and make the country more competitive in these new global markets (which didn't just fall upon us from the sky like manna; someone made them happen).

There are other alternatives. I doubt there is a doctor that would not see you even if you had no insurance that would not lower the bill for you. Also there are some free health clinics, and colleges sometimes have low fare treatment plans. Don't do that again. You're asking for trouble.

But that is not the point. Health care that SOCIETY has developed for SOCIETY should be available to SOCIETY. Not to those who happen to be lucky enough to have jobs that provide them with insurance or who are wealthy enough to afford to pay for it. THAT. IS. NOT. MORALLY. ACCEPTABLE.

(Why do the morally correct people have so much trouble with morality?)

Gravatarwell, my $5000 deductible plan was supposed to cost $5000 a year, but then they found pre-existing conditions so they raised the price and exempted a bunch of stuff from coverage. plus i needed eye surgery, which they only covered at 80% after the deductible because it was out of network (no one locally in network qualified), and as a result my rates were going up the next year.

there was just no way i could afford to be spending close to $20,000 net on healthcare. next time i'll just go blind.

GravatarEchidne of the snakes

For the so called conservatives everyone should be in a "free market." But that doesn't seem to apply to the big corporations, banks and utilities.

In the "free market" for individuals, you have to earn your living, pay your taxes and make good on any debts you incur.

Not so in the world of the Big Money where many corporations have been found to "earn" their living by cheating or lying to their customers, where 60% of Fortune 500 corporations (according to Mother Jones mag) don't pay taxes and as far as paying their debts? That's why bail-outs were invented with the taxpayer getting stuck for the bill.

The only thing "free" about the "free market" is the "free ride" the rich get at the expense of the taxpayers.

GravatarThe banning of people by their IP address is extremely easy to circumvent. Our trolls are almost certainly using proxy servers to post. Allen Butler on occasion has boasted about being banned in the comments here as well as on his Shoelimpy blog, yet it has never stopped him from posting.

My biggest issue is rediscovering that discipline from when I was younger and less decadent as I downsize my lifestyle--something I really should've done years ago, but was too lazy.

GravatarWhat I have now for health care is simple. If I get very very sick, like when I pulled my back out so bad I was paralyzed from the chest down, I get driven to the emergency room. And then I rip up the $2,000 bill they send me for giving me a prescription for pain killers. In Maine, hospitals are barred by law from denying you medical treatment. I'm sure in other states they can actually shoot you in the face. But in Maine, at least, there still is the emergency room.

GravatarI had a tooth pull a few months back. My insurance did not pay one dime. The first part cost me 1500 dollars. Now he wants to put in a post to ready it for a crown. I'm in a money crunch right now and have to debate weather I want to spend the extra 400 dollars to be knocked out, but if not it's going to cost me 2600 dollars. Then I get to pay for the crown, which I have yet to figure out how much that's going to cost me.

GravatarThe only thing "free" about the "free market" is the "free ride" the rich get at the expense of the taxpayers.
Rudy - Free Woody

I've prolly written about this before (I'm an economist), but there is no such concept in economics as "free markets", not in the sense conservatives use the term. What they mean are "unregulated" markets, where anything the firms want to do goes. Supposedly the markets self-correct and self-police, so there is no need to regulate. For instance, if lots of people die from tainted Chinese medications, well, the American firms will stop importing them! See how it works?

But the power of the term "free markets" is that the conservatives mix "unregulated" markets with competitive markets. Competitive markets are something very defined and very precise in economics, and one can prove that competitive markets are an excellent thing. But the preconditions for one make them realistic in only very few cases, such as your local farmers' market. Conservatives somehow equate this case with the unregulated case and come up with something that is untrue.

GravatarWhat I have now for health care is simple. If I get very very sick, like when I pulled my back out so bad I was paralyzed from the chest down, I get driven to the emergency room.

When I needed to have a little eye procedure done (OK, it was nip-and-tuck for the bags, and I had my ass lifted at the same time!), they sent me to a specialist outside their hospital. They then paid for everything with nary a peep and no crossed wires. I then saw the out-of-the-hospital specialist for all my follow-ups, and they paid.

Honest to God, over the years I couldn't be happier with them.

Yes, markets are never truly free except in cases where you mentioned.

I have always had trouble with the supply side of the market coefficient. For the life of me I simply find it hard to believe in any sort of shortage. We can manufacture as much of anything that we choose to. Therefore the only scarcity that has an effect on markets would be the scarcity of raw materials or the scarcity promulgated by those who are manipulating the market. . . .

Yes; in 2003, I was making $30/hour, salaried, but I was working an average of 38-42 hrs./week, too. And, I had the company store (the company owned a lot of hospitals, including about a dozen within an hour's drive) insurance. I had two sleep studies done when I worked there, and I bet my out-of-pocked for both was less than $25.

I made over $100K one year, and my ex strife made certain to spend every fucking penny, even on couple therapy - the subject being my complaints that she was spending us into a hole. That was an additional $1000 per month - her therapy and couples therapy.

GravatarI have always had trouble with the supply side of the market coefficient. For the life of me I simply find it hard to believe in any sort of shortage. We can manufacture as much of anything that we choose to. Therefore the only scarcity that has an effect on markets would be the scarcity of raw materials or the scarcity promulgated by those who are manipulating the market. . . .

Well, the definition of economics is as the science of how to allocate scarce resources among competing needs. This is based on the assumption that our desires will always ultimately exceed the resources. Not all economists agree with that basic definition, but most do.

Scarcity can be natural or something created. For an example of the former, oil is getting scarce now. Created scarcities exist in any markets where the firms already in it manage to keep new firms out even if there would be space for more firms.

Then there is the distinction between scarcity on a local level and internationally. Take food. There are countries where food is very scarce but we could actually feed everybody if we did the allocation on a global basis.

GravatarWe can't influence the govt.

Err ... run for elected office.

GravatarHow can one be rich when one is almost a trillion dollars in debt?

GravatarI like my chiropractor. I went there today. He managed to put L5 back into place. It has an annoying habit of twisting and hurting like hell ever couple of months.

But my expectations are very low. I don't even like him to try the neck and upper back pain. What he has done has never helped and has, at times, actually hurt. I simply have asked him to concentrate on the one that he can fix.

As far as the rank and file GOPers go, the suckers who actually for vote for the dipshits, I agree.

With regards to the media fellators, it's about being a sychophant to preserve your access to power and the material benefits you derive from that access. I think folks like David Broder have always been shameless sychophants, the only difference nowadays is that the Bush administration's evil and incompetence has made it blatantly obvious that they are whores to the powerful. Their sychophancy can no longer be hidden or convincingly rationalized anymore. The funny thing is, they obviously haven't realized it yet, a consequence of being in the beltway bubble, I would imagine.

I've been reading Becker/Posner blog and you have to see Nobel Prize winning Prof. Becker's analysis of the subprime loan meltdown to appreciate what a propagandist he is. He offers an entirely fact free analysis of the market as if it were made up of individuals, deals with the issue of fraud/predatory lending by explicitly assuming it is not a problem, and pretends there will not be a federal bailout of the big players in order to conclude that everything is fine and dandy. There is no place in his analysis for the fact that the market benefits banks who act as middlemen and profit from transaction costs or that many of the investors are institutional or that the lenders are sharks.

Yup. The way to understand Becker's models is to see what he assumes away or in. It's all in the initial assumptions. You don't even have to wade through the math, because it doesn't matter.

Are you in Mass. ? What town ?

Squirrels, for example, are not usually garden eaters. Neither raccoons. Skunks dig up gardens, but only to get grubs. Rabbits will nibble on stuff.

Absent woodchucks, your plant eaters may be more slug-like, as in slugs ...

But what town you're in would be helpful info.

GravatarThe subprime losses have yet to translate into much more than some heightened volatility in the markets. Wtf is getting bailed out? Not the poor bastards facing foreclosure!

If they're lucky, they may wind up with a renegotiated loan situation that gives them a longer time and lower payments to repay what they owe.

The only ones whoever get bailed out in this country are the rich or the corporate incompetents (who are often the same people).

Gravatarultimately people should be held responsible for their investments.

The pre-Murdoch WSJ has had some good articles on it. This was considered a recommendation by his managers.

I had been, I thought, getting them used to me sitting near their watering hole at my pond waterfall (next to the Buddah statue interestingly enough--then won't go to the identical rock on the other side.) But after that night they went back to being just as cranky as they had been before.

Remember the S&L scandal? Who got bailed out in that? The government is always bailing out people who did something due to ignorance or greed, but most often they are quite well-off people.

I'm not saying that people who got mortgages they can't afford should be bailed out, necessarily. But the banks are every bit as much to blame as they handed out mortgages they knew the recipients couldn't manage.

GravatarHecate, how did the naked moondancing go? In fact I wish you would give updates after ritual gatherings, I never did hear how the Gathering for the Bees went.

T'was lovely tonight. This was our first moon ritual working w/ Lilith, and it focused on personal empowerment. Then a lovely grilled dinner on the deck. I am so lucky to know these women.

I did two rituals for the bees at the last moon, one with an ad hoc group of pagans organized by my friend R. and one with my own sweet circle. Since then, I've seen a few lone bees on my roses and at my gardenia, which is more than I'd seen before. The women who are sensitive to stuff like this got messages to plant "the old flowers" so some of us have been planting heirloom plants.

Interesting that yours seem to like Buddha. I was thinking someone should set up a central collection point (blog) that collects information on what the bees do seem to like, what is working.

GravatarYes, the mortgage lenders were aggressive. And many of these lenders are now going out of business. But this argument that people were tempted or manipulated or coerced into taking out loans bigger than they should have is patronizing and suggests that they--primarily the poor--need to be taken care of by some group of elites. The fact is that millions of us had to postpone our hopes for a home because we were responsible. Instead of rewarding that responsible behavior through letting prices adjust to levels where they should be, Congress wants to essentially provide support to keep prices from adjusting. So the irresponsible behavior gets rewarded. Makes no sense to me.

In 1985, Keating hired Alan Greenspan as an economic consultant, in an effort to convince an oversight agency to exempt Lincoln Savings from certain regulations. roseanne | 06.30.07 - 11:35 pm | #

A house is an investment in the sense that food is an investment. It is a necessity, unless you support massive government-subsidized public housing projects, which I suspect you do not.

Gravatari did not realize the link is dead. i will have to correct this.

but let us discuss slavery, michelle obama's relation to and advocacy for that slavery in china, the trade deficit, outsourcing, wal-mart, obama's mansion, the endorsement of daley and daley's veto of the big box ordinance, which creates near slave conditions of work in chicago. all of this is related, and all of it is relevant, as workers in chicago will never be able to afford homes.

and let us discuss how michelle obama is the pivot around which all these issues spin.

GravatarFor most Americans, a TV IS a necessity.

(raises hand sheepishly)

GravatarYes, but that dual role makes it not your usual investment, so don't conflate it with stocks, for fuck's sake.

GravatarLa Cosa Nostra--Unless you are buying derivative contracts on frozen concentrated orange juice, food is NOT an investment.

GravatarNTodd, For most Americans, a TV IS a necessity.

How is it a necessity?

A cheap DVD player provides more and cheaper entertainment than the local googoolplex, particularly if the local library offers DVDs.

Still not a necessity. Oddly enough, when I was growing up we didn't even have VHS!

Doug, NTodd, please address your questions to Robert Reich, not me. He's the one who offered the opinion.

He's not here. You are, and I'm more interested in what YOU think, anyway.

Perhaps, but her 90s show was funny, and John Goodman was good, man.

Gravatarthis argument that people were tempted or manipulated or coerced into taking out loans bigger than they should have is patronizing and suggests that they--primarily the poor--need to be taken care of by some group of elites.

So you suggest throwing them on the street. Yes, that's not elitist at all.

And we should get rid of Social Security, too, eh?
NTodd, Trashy

Did anyone else happen to watch the movie, MAXXED OUT? Those images are still floating in my head: the gleeful loan collectors, the woman who killed herself, the young people who killed themselves over credit card debt - the predatory lending practices toward the uneducated. . . Great fucking country this one. Made me Proud to be an American.

GravatarMy show was really funny.

Gravatar$51,200 from Wal-Mart for Michelle Obama. That is a real issue. Just who does she think she is? And then her husband claims he will not shop there. But he will certainly live off of the profits, profits gained by slave labor in China.

GravatarSo the irresponsible behavior gets rewarded. Makes no sense to me.
roseanne

Please stfu! You haven't a clue about what you're saying.

Rich corporations and Gooper politicians have been manifesting criminal behavior for years while being continually rewarded (Big Oil, Big Pharma, Big Insurance, etc.).

Some people bought homes on two paychecks and then one of the paychecks got downsized. Then there are the predatory lenders.

The Fed Reserve (who work for the Big Banks and Wall St.) sets interest rates so if you want to bitch take it to them.

Gravatar
you have to make sure that you put enough margin in your house investment to make it through difficult times.

That's an interesting idea, but difficult to implement. I have a fixed 30-year mortgage that I pay off as if it were a15-year mortgage. IOW, I went on the web and found calculators that showed me how much extra to pay a month in order to pay my mortgage off in 15 years. So every month I pay off some extra principal and, in the end, I'll pay a lot less interest than if i paid the mortgage off over 30 years. But every month, in spite of the extra principal payments, I get a new bill. The only way for me to "make it through difficult times" is to, as I do, have almost a year's worth of salary in the bank so that, if I lost my job, I could still make my mortgage payments for a year. By 8 or 9 months, I'd be terrified and would have to put my beloved home and garden on the market and hope to sell for at least what I owe. This is a rigged game and it's foolish to pretend that it isn't.

GravatarDo not be afraid, little bot, we want to help you. You can chatter freely here.

GravatarToo bad Tom Arnold left me for a cutie.

GravatarDWD--I hope you have the same level of sympathy for the Wall Street guys who lost everything in the dot.com bust, lost their homes, and were desperate or committed suicide. Oh, wait, people who make money are bad...that's right.

GravatarBut this argument that people were tempted or manipulated or coerced into taking out loans bigger than they should have is patronizing and suggests that they--primarily the poor--need to be taken care of by some group of elites.
---

Stop shilling. Salespeople are trained to appeal to peoples' vanity and their lack of self-esteem, which are essentially the two sides to the same coin. For this reason, in recent years, many people have been cajoled and deceived by salespeople into taking on much more debt than they could afford. The salesperson wins on the deal, they get the commission. The downside won't happen for at least a few years. By that time the salespeople will be long gone. This is predatory lending. It's called LOAN SHARKING.

Gravatarand let us discuss how michelle obama is the pivot around which all these issues spin.

Oh, is she running, too?

I'd rather discuss policies. Tell me why Kucinich is a good choice. I want to hear more about him since I find him the most aligned with my values of nonviolence. What other positive policy statements can you make supporting him?

Gravatarhmmmm, food fight in the middle school cafeteria.

GravatarMrs. Obama didn’t put it that way, of course. “As my campaign commitments continue to ramp up, it is becoming more difficult for me to provide the type of focus I would like on my professional responsibilities,” she said in a statement.

ust how big a deal was that for the campaign? Earlier this week on Tucker Carlson’s MSNBC show, columnist Lynn Sweet mentioned the Obama connection: “By the way, in Trenton last week, Barack Obama proclaimed that he will not shop at Wal-Mart. His wife is on the board of a company that is a vendor to Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart could emerge as a second or third issue. It’s a litmus test of something.”

And people call this "New Politics?" What a joke!

GravatarNTodd, if one is poor, one is likely not enjoying a really fun life.

And frankly, I'm not going to tell someone who is even poorer than I that their TV/DVD player is not a necessity.

If a TV or DVD player can make someone's life more bearable, or can provide a modicum of entertainment/diversion/education, then I'm all for it.

Being poor in America is hard enough. If someone gets a few hours of pleasure from the ball game on a Sunday, or Star Trek reruns, or watching PBS, then yes, the TV is a necessity.

If they can borrow Discovery Channel/History Channel/PBS DVDs from the local library, then who are you or I to proclaim that the DVD player is just a consumer item and not a necessity for them?

I actually have no problem with people making money. I know a lot of people who have made a lot of money. A lot of my friends have made a lot of money. But, as far as I know, NONE of my friends have made their money by exploiting people who did not know any better. (If they did, they would not be my friends. Acquaintances is about it)

Money is not evil in an of itself. It is the need to acquire money at any cost that is. If you are a great writer or musician or physician or lawyer or plumber or electrician or body shop man or carpenter or teacher or anything else and people are willing to pay you big bucks to work for them: good. In most cases those who are good at something share their wealth with other people who tend to be good at things as well. It is a nice system.

GravatarI assume that everyone saw this?

GravatarNTodd, if one is poor, one is likely not enjoying a really fun life.

When my family was poor, we enjoyed a fun life.

I am. They may want it, but they do not need it to live. One of my friends is homeless in Montpelier. Somehow he manages to find news and entertainment and even time to blog without owning more than what can fit in a cardboard box.

If they can borrow Discovery Channel/History Channel/PBS DVDs from the local library, then who are you or I to proclaim that the DVD player is just a consumer item and not a necessity for them?

Oddly enough, they can do that at most libraries without even bringing the stuff home.

GravatarTerry C,

He was so funny that it hurt. Our high school has only had 4 principals since it opened and his old principal, the first at our school, was there. Near the end, Black told a joke that involved the line, "So she decided to suck his cock." He looked up to his old principal and said, "I've waited a long time to say those words on this stage." I was laughing so hard that I thought Son was going to have to carry me out of there.

Gravatar7/18/64 was the day when everything changed in America.

It was when Nelson Mandela was sentenced to life in prison at Robbens Island Prison, South Africa and when I was born: fat, bald and stupid.

GravatarAnd as soon as Obama is not the Takedown Target O' the Week, fy under one of his other names will be back with the talking points against another Democratic contender for some other list of Lapses from Populist Purity. Christ, people, he was here ranting on Edwards a couple of months ago with practically the same spiel.

He's probably got a sheet ready to go for every candidate currently declared. Mike Gravel didn't do enough to publicize the Pentagon Papers (even though he was very nearly singlehandedly responsible for putting them in the public domain in the first place.) Kuchinich once turned down a phone solicitation for the Ohio Humane Society so he's as bad as Mitt Romney driving with the dog on top of the car. And on and on.

The one thing I can't quite figure out is if he's a genuine Naderite or just a fucking Republican stooge. I'd say the former but I think the last one of those went extinct in a zoo someplace in '01.

GravatarYes, you are being a dick -- by defining necessity in such spartan terms. I mean, if you won't to define necessity to what is essential to sustain life, then the fucking libraries you laud should be closed. You can't eat a book. "I'd like to see libraries improve lives by helping out with food and medicine rather than reading matter."

No, I'm not being a dick. I've observed that there are things that can help people without their need to own something. They can then use such money to invest in healthcare, housing, food, etc.

We as a society can collectively assist people to have better quality of life rather than having individuals buy into a consumerist society. And yet, I'm not saying that people shouldn't want to have nice things or enjoy life: I simply noted that TVs are not necessary to live and I'm more interested in other measures of quality of life.

That would include: do people have enough money to eat healthfully so they aren't going to McDonald's all the time, becoming obese and having the associated health issues that negatively impact quality of life?

I was talking about this rather reasonably and I'm getting called a dick. Weird.

GravatarAnd note I made no judgement about anybody's decisions to own a TV. I just don't like the notion of defending a rather destructive corporation by saying people can get cheap TVs.

GravatarThere is no necessity for a TV, and, in fact, the existence of one in virtually every household has made us into what we are today: lazy, gullible, overly comfortable and ignorant. There is nothing positive about using TV, DVDs or anything like that to substitute for a fulfilling life. This is how the Right has achieved its dominance, by making credit easy and shiny objects desirable. There is scarcely a single one of us here who wouldn't benefit in measurable ways from giving up television, especially now, with our web and the level that mass media has sunk below. Television and technology is being used as a weapon against thinking and creativity.

GravatarObama is not fit to be president imo. His wife has noting to do with it.
