HULK SMASHED

GravatarAnother "from the future" post, I'm guessing.

GravatarOh, dear.

GravatarThis is undeniably fun.

GravatarHome Run?

Gravatarla la la

GravatarLinkee no work.

GravatarLast link doesn't work.

GravatarWe took a lot of crap in those days, no doubt. But where's the link supposed to go?

GravatarBob Herbert: Tears for Teddy.

GravatarThat second link, however, is funny as shit.

GravatarOops.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/2....html?th& emc=th

GravatarTheir whole lives they've been taught to think of conservative as "grown-up" and responsible and liberal and as "childish" and "indulgent".

Some sort of holdover from Woodstock and rebelliousness in the
80s was conservative and - but really just whiny and selfish and an excuse
to be racist - sorry, politically incorrect.

GravatarAt our pot luck last night not one person said they would vote for McStain. Not one. Not even the retired military guy.

GravatarAs Steven M. Gillon notes in Politics and Vision, his excellent history of the ADA, it was virtually the only liberal organization to back President Harry S Truman's March 1947 decision to aid Greece and Turkey in their battle against Soviet subversion.

Cool. Installing right wing police states is truly part of the Battle For Freedom.

GravatarThis conservative guy where I work really wants McCain to win but then loudly announced yesterday that he though an Obama - Clinton ticket was unbeatable! "Unbeatable!!"

Then he said he was looking forward to them running together in this very snide way, like they would be fighting all the time and wingnuts would get a big kick out it.

GravatarThere was drama at the Tigard Transit Center , a bus transfer point with a roof to keep off the rain. A railroad crossing signal stuck in the "closed" down position not far away, blocking busses headed to Portland from reaching the center as the bells clanged moronically. Would-be passengers expressed consternation and alarm, I worried that my blood sugar would fall too far before I could complete my errand and make it home.

I made it.

GravatarShould I venture to make a comment about Hillary's "Obama might get shot dead like those lynching victims" statement? Or would that insert a bit of unneeded discord into an otherwise fine morning?

GravatarMore Petey:
But, over the next two years, in bitter political combat across the institutions of American liberalism, anti-communism gained strength. With the ADA's help, Truman crushed Wallace's third-party challenge en route to reelection. The formerly leftist Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) expelled its communist affiliates and The New Republic broke with Wallace, its former editor. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) denounced communism, as did the NAACP.

In other words, thousands of labor union organizers and civil rights workers were purged in an ideological coup that turned the labor movement into a gutless bureaucracy that began to fade nearly at once and paralyzed the civil rights movement for nearly a decade.

GravatarMoe, it's the assassination elephant in the room, I'm
afraid.

GravatarPlantsman, you and Molly can exchange funny bus stories.

GravatarFWIW, I think she'd be just as vulnerable as he is to that sort of ting. There's a whole lotta crazy in the world.

GravatarForget refighting the Vietnam war, let's refight the battle in against soviet subversion the Peleponnesus!!!

GravatarCan't wait for MoDo to weigh in on that which shall not be referred to...I am a sick puppy

GravatarCan I mentioned many Atriots got together in Central Park last evening and good time was had by all?

GravatarJokes about fear of Cheneydom aside, the fact that no one's tried to get Bush suggests that assassination may have run its course as a crazy person endeavour.

GravatarOh, nice, CoT. Did you have good weather?

GravatarThe point I made at the bus transfer point (everyone willing to commit aloud said he or she supported Obama) was that the Republicans got us here.

That being the case, why on Earth would we return them to power.

GravatarAnd plantsman, I have a gardening story (as I often do). I was clearing out a thicket of weeds, preparing to plant my remaining tomatoes. And there in the middle was a nest, on the ground, mind you. And in the nest were three baby birds.

Watched to see if the mother came back. She did. So now I'm stuck. Can't plant the tomatoes until the babies grow up.

Gravatar(?) Sheesh.

Gravatarthe fact that no one's tried to get Bush suggests that assassination may have run its course as a crazy person endeavour.

You know, I never really thought about that. Where of where are the Squeaky Frommes of yesteryear?

GravatarPetey
During the early cold war, liberals repeatedly argued that the denial of African American civil rights undermined America's anti-communist efforts in the Third World. This linkage between freedom at home and freedom abroad was particularly important in the debate over civil liberties.

This story lacks veracity. Actually, the cold war liberals justified jim crow on the grounds that fighting communism took precedence.

So poor pathetic petey and his moronic historical fantasies about stern strong Men who will firm up his limp ideology.

GravatarThen sun setting over the elegant building overlooking Sheep Meadow, the kids throwing their frisbees, there was sushi, tikka, wine, cheese, olives, pita, hummus, and fantastic dessert made a certain tiger.

GravatarSnarkworth, that's sweet, and if the weather permits this, I'm sure the 'maters won't mind much. They can be transplanted even when seriously root-bound and snap out of it.

GravatarOne weird thing about the rural route bus is that it seems to be used primarily for MR adults going to assisted workplaces, and senior citizens going to their day programs. When I asked if I could use it to commute regularly, the bus driver seemed flabbergasted that anyone might want to.

Gravatarcheese...so it wasn't vegan...no moles then

GravatarHeh, Moe and Molly; I've been wondering that for a long while. But you can't say so here or you'll get the WGG treatment.

GravatarNeither here nor there, but nearly everyday, even today, a Saturday, I receive a judicial order against publishing the name of someone in and/ or the details of in a court proceeding. That never happened down in the states, of course. Publication bans are just part of the usual course of business here.

GravatarWeather was nearly perfect. A little chilly, but then it was time to leave.

They kick people out of the park at 8:00.

We started talking politics but moved on to a subject of more interest to NYers, real estate.

GravatarOh, that sounds great, CoT. We'll have to get down for one of those soon.

We were watching Godspell a couple of months ago, and there's a high tracking shot over the Sheep Meadow in which you can see those big granite rocks. The 8YO said "Hey, I climbed those!" I was amazed he remembered.

Gravatar

GravatarCan I mentioned many Atriots got together in Central Park last evening and good time was had by all?

The sheep meadow is a traditional gathering place of you ideologically unreliable softs who are not willing to put your shoulders to the grindstone of anti-islamofacism. See how much your tahini and sushi can protect you against AL QAEDA!

/Petey

Gravatarplantsman, I'm not advocating violence. Far from it.

For one, it's not necessary, at this point. Simple return of democratic representation would make a world of difference.

GravatarPetey should hit this:

GravatarAssassination is so retro. Of course, now that it's 1974 again, who knows what might happen?

GravatarOne of my favorite movie scenes of all time is in The Fisher King , I think it's called. It's an incredibly coreographed long shot in Grand Central
where everyone dances.

GravatarPublication bans are just part of the usual course of business here.
Moe Szyslak

that is odd. About the only time a criminal courtroom is closed here is when an undercover officer might be outed.

GravatarI wouldn't want to see him assassinated either, but it is a bit weird no one has tried.

President Cheney must scare the shit out of even the craziest among us.

GravatarHere's a fun way to start your day.

The comments are kinda fun too.

plantsman, less blue

Thanks, p-man. Maybe I'll just put them in bigger pots for the duration.

GravatarNor am I, but my level of frustration is quite high.

GravatarSnarkworth, that's a great idea.

Gravataryup. and Liberal is still a bad word.

GravatarA great scene indeed

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c...h? v=cn9ifIhCIhg

GravatarMost of the publication bans involve sexual assaults, or allegations thereof. Some are about financial matters, and about half of these are successfully contested, either by one of the parties in the case or by the press. The other big category is minors. And then some assorted other issues.

GravatarMaybe the crazies have moved on. Like Tim McVeigh. or Kascysnski, etc. Domestic or international terrorism.

GravatarA couple of years ago, I bought Thers a small pin that said "liberal."

Caught the teen wearing it the other day.

Gravatarthe right uses political assassination because it works and they get away with it.

GravatarCoT,
Well, that's true. Abortion clinics, etc.

But there hasn't even been much of that lately.

Gravatarthe right uses character assassination.

GravatarThanks, rootless-e; that's it.

GravatarAtrios fixed the link, btw...

GravatarWell, Hinckley wasn't particularly right wing, was he? And Fromme certainly wasn't.

GravatarIt does seem amazing when you look back. The Kennedys, King, Malcolm X, even Gerry Ford. And Hinckley.

Strange times.

There are other countries where of course this still goes on. Some important was just shot in Eastern Europe or Asia, I think.

GravatarThe whole ethos of the Manson Girls was spectacularly creepy, to me.

GravatarWell, Hinckley wasn't particularly right wing, was he? And Fromme certainly wasn't.
Molly Ivors | Homepage | 05.24.08 - 7:04 am | #

Fromme was. But from RFK to Alan Berg, the successful political assassinations are all of left/liberals.

GravatarHinckley was mentally ill. He originally targeted Carter. Attention seeker. Like that guy that Lennon.

Gravatar"Junta: Myanmar cyclone claimed 1250194 chickens, 136804 buffaloes"

GravatarWhere did the Guardian dig this up, haven't heard it here:

Earlier this year, the Clinton camp distanced itself from a New Hampshire supporter who referenced the Kennedy assassination while introducing the former first lady at a public event.

"Some people compare one of the other candidates to John F Kennedy," the New Hampshire supporter said while Clinton looked on. "But he was assassinated."

GravatarBut when I asked my students about their aspirations, the first boy yelled, “When I grow up, I want to be a foreigner!”

www.nytimes.com

GravatarI wasn't there, but it seems like the political rise of people like Nixon and Reagan was a reaction to craziness the Manson types, a general desire for law and order. Just a hatred for hippies drugs and anti-war and civil rights protests and riots.

Now Beinart still thinks he's battling these same people.

GravatarThe link to alicublog has a link to Sadly, No. One of their posts on this subject is entitled "Axis of EVOO"

(!)

GravatarFrom Kos: the Clinton for VP bribe
In a move that could foreshadow a public push from the Hillary forces to get Barack Obama to invite her on the ticket, Hillary's top campaign fundraising official said in an interview that there's a "risk" that Hillary's political and financial supporters won't get behind Obama in time for him to win in November if she's passed over for the veep slot.

The fundraiser, businessman Hassan Nemazee, is Hillary's leading finance chair and one of the most influential money men in the party. He's the first prominent Hillary campaign official to raise the possiblity of an Obama loss should she not be invited on the ticket, and his comments suggests that this argument could emerge as central to any Clinton camp push to make her veep.

GravatarMcCain, in Miami, promises to continue isolating Cuba
Los Angeles Times - May 20, 2008
Sen. John McCain talks to supporters today at the Sheraton Mart Hotel in Miami, Florida. The GOP presidential candidate says he’ll continue isolating Cuba until the Communist-ruled island frees political prisoners and allows multi-party elections.

that policy has worked out so well for > 50 years. ahh the lame-old-party, sticking to the same process and expecting a different result is the sign of...what is it? oh right, INSANITY.

thanks media, for not pointing out how hypocritical our policy towards cuba is, we the people really need to not know

GravatarMy best student is the local constable, Officer Li. He approached me about a private lesson in English vulgarities, “so I know when a foreigner is cursing me.” We met over dumplings. As the rounds of beer kept coming and other customers turned to stare, I compared Officer Li to body parts, told him what to do with himself and appraised his mother. He nodded happily and asked for more.

GravatarCoT,
That's my sense, too. Thus the ongoing potency of the "Culture Wars."

It also explains the sneering attitude toward peace, environmentalism, and the social safety net, all of which benefit conservatives at least as much as liberals.

GravatarLike most people, I guess, I had a phase of my adolescence when I was fascinated by the Mansons.

I was always a Zodiac man, myself...

GravatarNow Beinart still thinks he's battling these same people.
Culture of TrÜth | Homepage | 05.24.08 - 7:11 am | #

The right has always used the tactic of identifying themselves with the preservation of order against the crazies. The identity of the crazies changes, but it's always the same story.

Meanwhile, Manson was nothing compared to the Aryan nations nutters who roam the country.

GravatarWell, I'm younger than you, trademark dave.

GravatarFighting previous wars is always popular for rat wangers.

GravatarSo just what are Chinese people learning about the English-speaking world? For starters, we’re moody sluts. A book called “Love English” teaches that “Do you want to go to a movie?” really means “I’d eventually like to have sex with you,” while “I’m bored” really means “Do you want to have sex?” The final entry in “50 Selected Love Letters Between United States Presidents and Their Beloved” is from Monica to Bill, and introduces the adjectives “disposable,” “used” and “insignificant.”

www.nytimes.com

GravatarI was never really fascinated by the Mansons, though I definitely seen how one would be, but I was fascinated the Kennedy assasination.

I'm like K. Spacey in that clip from "Recount."

"How could not know what happened?? How could you not know!?!"

GravatarFighting previous wars is always popular for rat wangers.
plantsman

Looking forward to the next one is also favorite.

Gravatarrootless,
Absolutely. But Manson had a crowd of people around him, whereas someone like McVeigh, it was really only him and a couple of others.

One time, Thers and I had rental car trouble in far northern New York, and had to take a cab from the middle of nowhere to Rochester to get a new car. "Lotta guys up here know how Tim McVeigh feels," the cabbie told us.

GravatarWell, I'm younger than you...

Zodiac was a local boy, too.

I'm sure you know the real target of the Tate murders was probably Terry Melcher. He stymied Manson's music career.

Dennis Wilson was probably on the short list, too...

GravatarCoT,
Yep, had a Kennedy phase, too. And Jack the Ripper. I was always amazed that the London police took photos of those crime scenes.

GravatarAs if. Sea Bear Smokehouse just sent an email beseeching me to "reserve my line caught, Copper River Wild Salmon". I don't know how I'm gonna eat next month, and I highly doubt wild salmon is in my future unless I catch it.

Gravatardave,
I did know that. Melcher was whose son? Dinah Shore or something?

GravatarNorthern New York??

Yeah, the federal government really represses people up there.

[ rolls eyes ]

GravatarOh molly

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ Ary...yan_Brotherhood

GravatarMelcher was Doris Day's son.

And the "Terry" in "Bruce and Terry"!

GravatarDoris Day.

GravatarWell, I hear stirring and flushing and such upstairs. I'd better make a fresh pot of coffee to keep peace in the Snarkhouse. Have a great Saturday, all!

GravatarOooh, the Ripper. Another obsession of mine.

A couple of years ago a read a book that posited he moved to San Francisco. Riveting.

GravatarAnd don't forget Jonestown. That always scared the shit out of me. That so many people were willing to subvert themselves to a crazy.

GravatarYeah, the federal government really represses people up there.

[ rolls eyes ]

Heh. Oh, the gulags of Buffalo!

GravatarMeanwhile, Manson was nothing compared to the Aryan nations nutters who roam the country.

Temporarily flushed out of of the bushes during the white powder era. I was amazed then at pix of fatigue-clad aka-toters in the boonies, armed for whatever.

Wonder if they're still there.

GravatarThe New Fillmore West was right down the block from the abandoned People's Temple. Kinda shook me up.

Gravatarrootless,
Yep. But it's less of a one-person-crazy org, that's all I meant.

A lot of my students these days are coming to me having watched American History X in high school. Their teachers must be worried about them.

GravatarI gotta go. Later, all.

GravatarI seem to recall, in the early 70s, rumors about Doris Day hanging out with Sly Stone...

Gravatar
Wonder if they're still there.

Yep.

GravatarAnd the group that got Patty Hearst.

Where is Symbion anyway? And did they ever get liberated?

GravatarA-man will be waking up early for a few days until his clock gets back on 'merkun time.

GravatarManson had a crowd of people around him, whereas someone like McVeigh, it was really only him and a couple of others.

How about the crazed anti-abortion violence? That was a fairly well organized bunch.

GravatarOoo, Jonestown! That was really my first obsession. I think I was 12 r so when it happened, and I was fascinated.

ANd then one of my favorite bands at the time did a song about it. That was weird.

Less egregiously stupid than the last two. Cate Blanchett as Lotte Lenya is the sexiest woman alive.

GravatarNancy,
More upstate crazies: Randall Terry came from here.

GravatarAnd the group that got Patty Hearst.

Talk to res ipsa about them. When she was in the Bay Area last summer, she wanted to check out the apartment they grabbed Hearst from in Berkeley, but we didn't get around to it.

I also owe her a Zodiac tour...

GravatarMolly, did you know Jackie Speier was just elected to Congress?

GravatarWe were living in Italy when the Jonestown mass suicide occurred. A lot of our Italian friends kept asking how could it have happened. The best I could come up with, at the time, was that they were Californians and, therefor, a little nutty. Seemed to satisfy them. Heh.

GravatarMolly, did you know Jackie Speier was just elected to Congress?

I hadn't seen that. She, at least, understood the danger they were facing.

GravatarMSNBC interviewed the dreadful Rep. Marilyn Musgrave (R-CO) about the "wedge tornado" that ripped thru Windsor, Co in her district yesterday.

GravatarAnd don't forget Jonestown. That always scared the shit out of me. That so many people were willing to subvert themselves to a crazy.

GravatarThe best I could come up with, at the time, was that they were Californians and, therefor, a little nutty.

See, if I were like certain Southerners, this would trigger a days-long shitstorm of indignation on how Californians are always unfairly picked on.

As it is, I think I'll just go back to bed (so I can get up at 6 and go back to work)...

Why didn't they just put the UN there, dammit.

GravatarAs much fun as this thread is going to b, they've begun construction of a whole new floor immidiately above.

GravatarSimels is here - maybe he explain was the hell was going from 1967-1975

What's weird is that it seemed so normal.

GravatarI'm sensing that McSame's greatest vulnerability is his bad temperament and explosive temper. He's incredibly condescending to and dismissive of Obama, and apparently can't stand him. He could really screw up in a debate as a result.

GravatarPeter Beinart, Joh Chait were vetted by members of the right (the political right who have an agenda), AND NOT for their liberal view points, but instead for their Republican viewpoints. This should not to be confused with conservative viewpoints, because neverending wars and nation building aren't particularly conservative.

Joe Klein "ditto". Klein's pushing of the wiretapping immunity bill (his willful and outright lies about it in TIME magazine wasn't exactly true conservative behavior because conservatives believe in “strict construction” of the US Constitution - Klein was pushing ONLY pro-Bush policy, with an intent to push it, to willing use TIME to lie to readers, to the public.

These people are Republican plants that have been paraded in magazines and media by Republican owned and controlled media sources as if these so-called journalist were mainstream liberal comment. They are not and have never been main stream liberal comment.

They are nothing more than propagandist plants placed in their position by a well-oiled Republican machine, a criminal organized one.

Gravatar"tough tough I'm tough tough tough tough tough. Harry Truman would suck my cock"-Peter Beinart

Gravatar

How about taking responsibility for the mess you created, instead?

Not possible.

First, the people who created this mess feel powerless. Since they know they have no power, the mess in the world cannot possibly be their fault. Ask them.

Second, people who feel powerless attack every perceived threat with everything possible. They are extremists, yet since they have no power, no extreme is sufficient.

Third, such "powerless" people have to attend to EVERY possible threat. Their perception is flawed. A major element in their feeling of powerlessness is a total lack of perspective. All threats are equal to them, and that is why they attack every threat with all guns blazing.

Michelle Malkin will never take responsibility for her actions. In her utter fear at everything possibly threatening, whatever she does is justified - and simultaneously ineffective.

GravatarDon't flatter yourself. You were in no way a dirty fucking hippy. You were just a stupid faggot of a DorkBoy. Still are.
