Given the demonstrated uselessness of the Democratic party of late -- stopped the war, have they? -- and especially the DLC 5th column, that is not a totally farfetched theory.

Nice scoot. I was drooling over Hondas on the web a few days ago. I'd have to convince Mrs Toonscribe, though, and she's leary of 2 wheels after having a BIL killed on a motorcycle several years ago -- a car driver "didn't see him coming" and pulled out in front of him.

I'm convinced that the Dems are going to win in a tidal wave in November. I have no doubt of that.
What I have doubts about is whether they will be emboldened by the scope of that win to actually do something.
Given their history, I think those doubts are eminently justified.

Willendorf Venus: When, exactly, does a vehicle cross over from bigass scooter to motorcycle? That behemoth looked like a motorcycle to me, but I am Y-chromosomally challenged.
All you wanted to know about two-wheelers (and then some): 1.) Motorized bicycle -- legal term usually indicating any two-wheeler with an engige 50cc or less. 2.) Scooter -- usually step-through frame (as opposed to straddling part of the bike) and usually automatic transmission. 3.) Moped -- can be powered by foot, like a bicycle, but also has a small gas engine, usually 50cc or less. 4.) Motorcycle -- generally larger engine, almost always manual transmission, always some substantial part of the bike can be "gripped" with the thighs.

The Democrats "control" the Senate only with the help of Mr. Lieberman. Who is out campaigning for Mr. McCain.
I can't imagine a more difficult situation for effective action by the Democrats in the Senate.

When, exactly, does a vehicle cross over from bigass scooter to motorcycle?
It's in the design -- the shape of the frame, placement of engine, how you sit, and the type of wheels. Engine size and over-all size make no difference.

Apparently, McCain's handlers are angry at Obama's 'losing his bearings' comment, seeing it as a poke against Oldie McOld's age. I wish Obama would just say something like "No, if I wanted to draw attention to McCain's age, I would have said something like 'He's fallen and he can't get up.'"

It happens a lot. I approach green-light intersections with a LOT of care. As many ambulances as I encounter in my daily travels, it'd really suck (and yet be ironic) to get plowed by one.
I had a dude step right off the sidewalk directly into my path on White Bridge Rd. yesterday. I'm glad I've practiced my panic stops, or that could've been bad. Oh, yes -- I cursed the man, mightly.

Hhhmmm, PBS political discussion programs saying Obama will choose among Sam Nunn, Wes Clark, Richard Lugar, Anthony Zinni, Jim Webb, Richardson a long shot.
I question Wes Clark with Obama, altho' of the military group he has more campaign experience. Zinni has zero political campaigning experience, and Jim Webb does not, per these folks, like to campaign. Plus, if he wins w/ Obama, who replaces him in the Senate? Is there another Dem who could win a US Senate seat? Sam Nunn same age as McCain, per Mark Shields, which neutralizes age issue. No women mentioned.
Sure may be interesting.
And I will never, ever vote for Sam Nunn after the way he kneecapped Bill Clinton in the first weeks of his presidency.

Moe: Thomas Powers agrees with you in the current NYRB. He doesn't see either Democrat declaring de facto defeat in a military exercise by withdrawing from it:
Iraq is the big war. Getting out of Iraq will require just as much resolution as it took to get in—and the same kind of resolution: a willingness to ignore the consequences. The consequence hardest to ignore will be the growing power and influence of Iran, which Bush has described as one of the two great security threats to the US. Israel shares this view of Iran. No new president will want to run the risk of being thought soft on Iran. This is where the military error exacts a terrible price. A political conflict transformed into a military conflict requires a military resolution, and those, famously, come in two forms—victory or defeat. Getting out means admitting defeat.
Is it possible that the new president will have that kind of resolution? I think not; to my ear Clinton and Obama don't sound drained of hope or bright ideas, determined to cut losses and end the agony. Why should they? They're coming in fresh from the sidelines. Getting out, giving up, admitting defeat are not what we expect from the psychology of newly elected presidents who have just overcome all odds and battled through to personal victory. They've managed the impossible once; why not again? Planning for withdrawals might begin on Day One, but the plans will be hostage to events.
At first, perhaps, all runs smoothly. Then things begin to happen. The situation on the first day has altered by the tenth. Some faction of Iraqis joins or drops out of the fight. A troublesome law is passed, or left standing. A helicopter goes down with casualties in two digits. The Green Zone is hit by a new wave of rockets or mortars from Sadr City in Baghdad. The US Army protests that the rockets or mortars were provided by Iran. The new president warns Iran to stay out of the fight. The government in Tehran dismisses the warning. This is already a long-established pattern. Why should we expect it to change? So it goes. At an unmarked moment somewhere between the third and the sixth month a sea change occurs: Bush's war becomes the new president's war, and getting out means failure, means defeat, means rising opposition at home, means no second term. It's not hard to see where this is going.
We are committed in Afghanistan. We are not ready to leave Iraq. In both countries our friends are in trouble. The pride of American arms is at stake. The world is watching. To me the logic of events seems inescapable. Unless something quite unexpected happens, four years from now the presidential candidates will be arguing about two wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, one going into its ninth year, the other into its eleventh. The choice will be the one Americans hate most—get out or fight on.
Good article, well worth the read.
