GravatarCanned sardines on saltines with mustard and domestic beer. I did that once.

GravatarOh no, the sardine, she must be eaten live.

GravatarI like canned sardines every once in awhile. Not the ones in mustard. Well, I haven't tried those, but they don't sound good.

GravatarNice song.

GravatarOkay, off to bed.

But in the meantime, there's a droll new Listomania -- theme: Songs About Going Somewhere or Anywhere! -- over at the homepage. For those who care.

And it has a Space Moose reference, and if you know what that means you ought to be ashamed of yourselves.

GravatarI remember an episode of Iron Chef where sardines were the theme ingredient. Yummy stuff.

GravatarALSIP, Ill. (AP) - Three gravediggers and a cemetery manager unearthed hundreds of corpses from a historic black cemetery south of Chicago, dumping some in a weeded area and double-stacking others in existing graves, in an elaborate scheme to resell the plots, authorities said Thursday. All four were charged with felonies.

Food isn't a human right - talk about social Darwinism. And when I pointed out that he was a hypocrite for calling everyone 'ideologically rigid'and then turning around and telling everyone what argument to make or not to make in favor of a public plan of some sort, he dodged and then got all passive-aggressive. I hate that passive aggressive shit.

It was an nact of generosity by Ensign's parents, who were blessed with enormous wealth and can afford such acts of kindness. GravatarSorry, that Anonymous was me - had to downgrade Firefox and forgot to add my info. Because killfile wouldn't yet work with the new version!

GravatarI know what you mean... you like to think someone is just sort of wrong, and they can be brought around. Then it turns out you don't really know *what* they think, just that they're screwing around...

GravatarI don't think s*bs will be with us much longer. Then soon afterwards, a new name will appear, speaking in naive but friendly tones, agreeing with everyone, pleasant and polite....and the dance begins again.

IL, if yer still around, I had a very similar experience the last couple of days with that which-is-worse, the-heat-or-the-solar-rays question. Went down to Shiloh battlefield Tuesday, which was not terribly hot by any means by the last few weeks' standards. And nice breeze, humidity relatively low...should have been ideal.

Yet walking around, if I was out in the sunlight for more than 5 minutes or so the eyesight started to get wavery, the stomach felt not so good, and movement became...not exactly difficult, more like in slow motion.

As soon as I got into some shade these phenomena went away. It was very strange. Have lived in TN for 10 years now but am occasionally reminded emphatically that 46 years in more northerly latitudes will never be overcome.

not that i really want it to be. I want to win the fucking lottery so I can get the fuck out of this damn place. Back to PA, back to IL, back to IA (well, okay, that's pushing it), just the fuck out of the south.

GravatarAnd finally, just to let you know I have not been lazy this week, a shot of one of my gardens.

GravatarSebs is an obvious troll, he gets a kick out of people getting angry at him.

If someone is making you angry, it's probably a troll. The reasoning is simple, once you get mad, you lose your reason and it's super easy to lead you down the garden path.

GravatarI know what you mean... you like to think someone is just sort of wrong, and they can be brought around. Then it turns out you don't really know *what* they think, just that they're screwing around...

That's the key - IMHO, in the 5 years or so I've been coming here I am hardpressed to think of very many people espousing overtly Republican views who weren't just yanking chains, as they eventually reveal through any of various means.

GravatarNick: Born there. Dragged away involuntarily at the age of 7 when (step)dad got a transfer to a job in IL, probably to get away from his in-laws.

GravatarSome lady got hit by lightening inside her house. Like I needed to know that, I can't deal with knowing that can happen.

Oh, so that puts you in the what you don't know can't hurt you camp?

So you only want to know about things you have control over? What happened to knowledge is power? What about discovery that leads to the ability to exert greater control over one's environment, ability to barter, ability as a consumer to have informed discussions with providers?

For example, I may not know how to do brain surgery, but the more I know about what's being proposed, the better my ability to offer *informed consent* which is essential to the bona fides of any legitimate contract.

hm?

Gravatarbtw Nick, thank you for the educational lesson here. Never heard of "Effigy Mounds" before and had to look it up. Did not know that Mound Builders culture extended anywhere near that far north. Lots of them in southern Illinois, along the Ohio, indeed I nearly walked on some in Shiloh on Tuesday (not literally of course, that would be both sacreligious and illegal.)

The Shiloh mounds are not long for this world, geologically speaking. They are right at a 90-degree bend of the Tennessee River and several have already been undercut and fallen in. They keep loading the banks up with riprap every few years but it won't hold out forever.

What these mysterious vibrations say about future earthquakes is far from certain. But some think the deep tremors suggest underground stress may be building up faster than expected and may indicate an increased risk of a major temblor.

Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, monitored seismic activity on the fault's central section between July 2001 and February 2009 and recorded more than 2,000 tremors. The tremors lasted mere minutes to nearly half an hour.

Unlike earthquakes, tremors occur deeper below the surface and the shaking lasts longer.

GravatarI thought that was spinach.

Only in Philadelphia or Toledo.

Self defense against fresh fruit!

What about pointed sticks?

Pointed stick?
Oh, oh, oh. We want to learn how to defend ourselves against pointed sticks, do we? Getting all high and mighty, eh? Fresh fruit not good enough for you eh? Well I'll tell you something my lad. When you're walking home tonight and some great homicidal maniac comes after you with a bunch of loganberries, don't come crying to me! Now, the passion fruit. When your assailant lunges at you with a passion fruit..

Can't hurt!

GravatarWon't people be surprised when they can't twitter after the earthquake? Or use their phones.

Those of use with land lines and ham radios will rule the world!

Actually, I had better luck contacting friends in Manhattan after 9/11 via the Internet than via the phone.

But ham radios do rock because of their decentralized nature...

plus they make tasty sammiches.

GravatarI recently dug out my solar powered battery recharger.

I have a ham radio that runs on batteries.

If I cared enough I could look up the process for sending packets to the internet via ham radio. The problem is I would have to reach something that could accept them. Hand held radios don't have much reach.

GravatarI have a hand crank radio...

Remember the air raid shelters with the green cans filled with saltines?

Duck and cover!

One of my old students used to do a lot with ham radios and TCP/IP.

The handhelds work fairly well, but you do need a receiving device, and the public nature of the system means it might be deuce difficult to find something in the boonies. Yet somehow in the Starfleet Academy area methinks you'll find plenty...

GravatarI do admit to enjoying deviled ham on crackers.

GravatarAlmost anything deviled is yummy.

GravatarI had an early transistor radio that was powered by the geomagnetic force. Can't remember if there were one or two leads any way, for power you connected to a significantly large hunk of iron.

My mom had tons of canned food in the hall and she talked about putting mattresses against the broken windows after the bomb hit Los Angeles....

scared teh hell out of me.

GravatarI actually did look it up at the time, but as you said, I needed a receiver device. And if the whole area is down?

Their are a couple of battery powered repeater towers in SF but I don't think I can reach them from my location.

It might be fun to try. Of course when the real emergency hits that won't be a good time to try. The tower might be busy with more important traffic.

But if I could figure it out I could log on to haloscan =---and promptly get kicked off!

Maybe I could twitter my sister and she could retweet me around the world!

GravatarI like deviled eggs. With olive slices and tiny shrimps.

GravatarAtrios needs to dump that Repower America ad in the upper left. It covers up the content in the left corner (i.e. whoever is paying for the top banner ad is not getting their ad completely seen) and when you click 'close' it doesn't close.

GravatarWatch out, Sarah's Twittering again!

Tonight she quotes Walter Cronkite in order to back up her claim that the media has a liberal bias. Here's what she twatted:

"...."Most newspapermen by definition have to be liberal; if they're not, by my definition, they can hardly be good newspapermen" W. Cronkite about 1 hour ago from TwitterBerry "

Oooh, bad stuff eh?

Only she chopped the quote. The full quote is: "I think most newspapermen by definition have to be liberal; if they’re not liberal, by definition of it, then they can hardly be good newspapermen. If they’re preordained dogmatists for a cause, then they can’t be very good journalists." ~ Walter Cronkite, Playboy, June 1973

Preordained dogmatists, ya mean like Hannity, Greta, Beck?

No wonder it took her 5 schools to get a Journalism degree, she sux at it.

GravatarAgain with the "internal server error."
Sheesh.

GravatarFrom Krugman:

What Mr. Obama needs to do is level with the American people. He needs to admit that he may not have done enough on the first try. He needs to remind the country that he’s trying to steer the country through a severe economic storm, and that some course adjustments — including, quite possibly, another round of stimulus — may be necessary.

What he needs, in short, is to do for economic policy what he’s already done for race relations and foreign policy — talk to Americans like adults.

GravatarFrom the BBC:

China ordered mosques not to open for Friday prayers in the western city of Urumqi, which has been hit by several days of ethnic violence.

Public notices were put on gates of mosques across the city, although at least one mosque did open for prayers at the request of worshippers.

GravatarSasha is all kinds of cute.

GravatarDear President Hu Jintao:

Lemme know how that "denying Muslims the right to worship" works out for you.

GravatarWell, Sen. Roland Burris finally did something smart: decided not to run for a full Senate term in 2010 for the Seat Blago gave him.

GravatarWell, let's see . . . headline: Buy American may hurt trade.

Duh . . . (Isn't that the purpose?)

GravatarThere's an elemental conflict between wanting everything to be cheap (and likely imported) and wanting it to be durable and high quality (and hopefully domestic).

GravatarWell, let's see: How are you doing today, DWD?

Oh, not too badly. I am kind of feeling sorry for Young DWD though. He has a job interview - a job he REALLY wants - in Grand Rapids and he is sick. (Swine Flu?)

He is off to Florida on Saturday so cannot reschedule: I am driving him there.

Hope it works out.

GravatarBest of Luck to young DWD.

GravatarThere's an elemental conflict between wanting everything to be cheap (and likely imported) and wanting it to be durable and high quality (and hopefully domestic).
plantsman, mad google skillz

The problem has ALWAYS been that our economy drives the world's. (We is good consumers - too good)

To these ends, trade agreements are not very reciprocal. Those who wish to trade with us insist on protecting and encouraging their own markets: yet when we even talk of responding in kind, we get a bunch of shit.

In my world, trade would be absolutely free or nonexistent. If you do not want American Beef (for example) Japan, keep your fucking cars. . .

and so on.

GravatarHaloscam is up to its old tricks

Good luck to young DWD.

A friend has applied for her first passport. They're asking her if she was ever arrested, has any outstanding parking tickets, etc. I wonder if that is standard operating procedure these days?

GravatarPlantsman,

He has been in bed for almost two days now: but his appetite is good. Just achy and feverish.

Not sure what to think of this.

GravatarDobro jutro svima.

Break a leg to the young DWD. Probably not swine flu, god forbid. I'd dose myself up with advil and some caffeine for the interview, and hope for the best.

GravatarWell, H1N1 is highly communicable but not so lethal at this point.

GravatarCheese and 5:30, y'all.

GravatarI got an email on the plans for H1N1 from some govt. official. Hope the crash vaccine program goes well.

GravatarGood morning.

Who are our new posters, John and sardine?

GravatarPoopy HaloScan!

Gravatar HoneyBearKelly: Who are our new posters, John and sardine?

'Tis a mystery!

GravatarSort of like the "Mystery Guests" on the old game show.

Gravatarcoke to JP.

GravatarAtrios said he had given the keys to some new people. So far they don't seem to have much of an agenda.

GravatarQL,

Can you imagine giving ME the keys? Endless folk music, economic bullshit, and egotistical rantings about everything.

(Prolly not a good idea)

GravatarSome mornings I can hardly get my agenda out of bed.

Good morning, good people.

GravatarUpthread, some other poster I've never heard complained about John using "Posted By." Sheesh.

GravatarOh.
OK.

It would have been polite for them to introduce themselves.

Gravatar plantsman: Upthread, some other poster I've never heard complained about John using "Posted By." Sheesh.

It's a Blogger setting that A-man activated, yesterday.

GravatarThe new version of Firefox (3.5) has a Google Window right next to the navigation window, and thus far seems to work fine.

GravatarSo, apparently, the electric meter reader completely screwed up last month and WAY overcharged me, but now this month's bill is already paid and I have a credit balance, but no clarification.
