The top counterterrorism and national security adviser to Romney’s presidential campaign is Cofer Black, vice chairman of Blackwater USA. The Iraqis died after guards employed by the private security firm opened fire following an alleged attack on a State Department convoy under their protection. Blackwater has a lucrative contract to guard U.S. diplomats in Iraq.

In about a century, some of the places that make America what it is may be slowly erased.

Global warming — through a combination of melting glaciers, disappearing ice sheets and warmer waters expanding — is expected to cause oceans to rise by one meter, or about 39 inches. It will happen regardless of any future actions to curb greenhouse gases, several leading scientists say. And it will reshape the nation.

A Canadian ex-girlfriend of mine got her arm broken in several places (among other things) by a machine at her work.

Excellent, timely care all the way around.

GravatarThe Bush Administration has been collecting detailed records on the travel habits of Americans headed overseas, whether you fly, drive or take cruises abroad -- not simply your method of transit but the personal items you carry with you and the people you stay with, according to documents and statements obtained by the Washington Post.

They even keep sometimes keep track of what books you read. For as long as 15 years.

In a terrifying front-page article Saturday, the Post outlines the latest in US government surveillance.

GravatarHAJI OMARAN (Iraq-Iran border), Sep 21 2007 (IPS) - Sixty-year-old Khadijah Hama Khan has had to flee home again. Nothing new. "All our life we have been on the run," she says.

This time she had to flee Iranian shelling on her border village. It was not easy; she injured her leg after walking barefoot two hours.

Now she lives in a tent with several other families on the foothills of the ragged Qandil mountains separating Iraq from Iran. Hundreds of families were forced to leave their villages to take refuge in shabby tents.

Here the families cook over burning wood, sleep on worn-out rugs, and drink from a dirty creek. Some children are suffering from diarrhoea, at a time when large parts of Kurdistan region have been hit by cholera.

The tragedy of the millions of Iraqis displaced by violence in other parts of the country has overshadowed the new misery of these families. Despite their terrible living conditions, they have received almost no aid.

"This is no life we are living. We have lost everything, our crops and houses. For some nights we did not have food," said Halima Hassan, 35. "We don't even dare to go back because Iran may shell the area again."

Having lived in Canada, one of the things I think Canadians have a hard time understanding is how much we've internalized this nonsense down here.

I mean, I've been a lefty all my life, I'm conversant with Marx and so forth...and even so, it's hard for me to draw simple conclusions like these on an emotional level. The conservatarian line about how global warming is "unstoppable" really pisses me off. I came up with this analogy for it a while back:

[They're] a bit like a doctor who tells you that you absolutely, positively don't have cancer - no matter what the tests say - and accuses you of being a hypochondriac and an hysteric. And then, once you finally get a correct diagnosis from another doctor, he says "You're too far gone. Treatment won't help, and even if it would, you couldn't afford it."

Cranky Novak Rips Greenspan ‘As A Democrat,’ Calls Mukasey ‘Totally Unqualified’

This weekend on Bloomberg Television, right-wing pundit Robert Novak ripped former Fed chief Alan Greenspan because he criticizes Bush’s economic policies while hailing those of President Clinton. Novak said that Greenspan revealed himself “as a Democrat”:

[Greenspan] suddenly emerges from the sea, naked like Venus, as a Democrat. He loves Bill Clinton, he loves tax increases, he’s dismissive of Ronald Reagan as an amiable putz, he detests the Bushes.

There are so many funny things about that, but what really kills me is that none of the people who believe this story ever have an explanation for why Bush doesn't come out and announce that that's what happened.

I mean, all they have to do is say, "He doesn't want to admit it, 'cause he'd be confessing to losing the war before it started." But for some reason, they won't.

GravatarMost people have yet to decide whether Gordon Brown is following a fair and just foreign policy since he came to power.

A YouGov survey for Oxfam found the jury was still out on Mr Brown's actions overseas. One in five people said they did not believe Mr Brown's overseas policy was fair and just, the same as the proportion of people who approved of his record since taking power in June. Mr Brown has been anxious to distance himself from Tony Blair's foreign policy and ministers have dropped references to the war on terror.

Oxfam Director, Barbara Stocking, said: "Public opinion is still out as far as Gordon Brown's approach to foreign policy goes.

"With UK foreign policy containing the potential to impact positively or negatively on many of the people Oxfam works with around the world, the public is waiting to see how he will take a different approach.

GravatarNTodd: is that good that Kayla is losing weight? is she sick?

It's *very* good. She's quite the porker, and overweight dogz tend to not live very long. Plus, it's hurting her joints, so I want her to lose at least 10 lbs--she's down about 4 or 5 so far thanks to a new diet food and more exercise (which Daddy was reluctant to force on her since she'd spent so much of her life alone outside fending for herself).

Good for you. Henrietta was also kept outside, in a little traveling cage, for the first three years of her life. She will not be out on her own, even now. But her turning sixteen in November or so is probably partly because she has always been svelte and has had her daily run until the last year or so.

The dispute had been brewing for days, but became more serious and violent when the workers discovered that they had been locked out of their factory.

Hundreds of police, backed by army units, were deployed to disperse them.

Garments are Bangladesh's biggest export earners - accounting for 75% of total export earnings last year.

Gravatarjust read digby on the way that the right jumped up an down about the Moveon ad.

And I also read Jamison Foser's column at Media Matters comparing how Powell was praised to how the General Named David was praised.

What I get from both of them is pointing out just how the whole discussion for the media is about one image or word.

There was a complete message in the ad , but the headline was all they wanted to look at.

Powell's presentation in the lead up to the war was all about his stature and not the facts.

I think that we need a few more top line images to push because that is all that seems to get through to the media

You're not nuts.

The lyricism of Deleuze (and Guattari) is really rather unnerving when you look closely at it. Their descriptions of the rhizome are extraordinary in their grace.

I think that French criticism has a strong tendency to love of self, love of high concept, love of the word.

Therefore, French Marxism or socialism tends always to be rather oblique in its expression.

GravatarMore than 100 cities in China, including the capital Beijing, have remained clogged with traffic jams despite the country staging its first "Car Free Day" in an attempt to cut congestion and pollution.

Many countries around the world observe the day on September 22 but Saturday was the first time China had joined in in a significant way.

"It's the same as always," said Dong Yonguin, a taxi driver, in the capital. "I don't see any difference."

The situation was reported to be similar in other major cities, such as Shanghai and Wuhan, a vast industrial city in the centre of the country.

The Unattainable Dream of Bureaucratic Mediocrities.

It can help to cut the paint with mineral spirits (? never remember the U.S. term here) and to do two thin coats rather than one thick one.

GravatarFor some reason it's off limits in our political discourse to mention this, but the $200 billion Bush wants for Iraq could buy a lot of that health insurance for kids he's going to veto.

There are no emergency rooms in Iraq.

Gravatarmineral spirits

GravatarYou will have to paint it at least twice. I did three coats. To load your brush, dip it in the paint, then remove the exess on the trim. Do this to both sides of the brush several times so that the brush is "loaded" with paint, not dripping though. You just want the interior of the brush to have paint as well as the outer bristles.

GravatarIt's just very gooey and sticky in a way that the matte paint is not. This is obvious, I know. But it's still a fucking mess.

Cutting it would help. High gloss will show all imperfections a lot more, though. That's why I never use it unless on something which will be washed regularly. Trim usually doesn't need that.
