oh my - BERLIN (AFP) — Three executives dubbed "Germany's stupidest bankers" in the press have been suspended from state bank KfW over erroneous transfers of more than 500 million euros (710 million dollars) to the bankrupt Lehman Brothers, the KfW said.
Two board members and a top risk control manager were suspended "pending final clarification of the incident" following a meeting of KfW's supervisory board meeting attended by top ministers including Finance Minister Peer Steinbrueck, the bank said in a statement late Thursday.
A law firm has also been hired to see if further "consequences" are appropriate and the bank, already under fire over its rescue of IKB -- Germany's biggest casualty of the subprime crisis -- will subject its business procedures, especially those of risk management, to an "in-depth audit."
The bank state-owned lender mistakenly transferred more than 350 million euros to Lehman Brothers on Monday after the US investment bank filed for bankruptcy protection, and according to the Bild daily the total exposure has since been established at 536 million euros.
"I have never experienced anything like it in my life," Bild quoted Steinbrueck as saying after the meeting.
Really? I kinda like Boo Weekley. He's been fun to watch, IMO.
Oh, I know. He's got the John Daly thing going. And to be honest, it'd be good for the Cup if the US won this one.

The ambitious effort to transfer the bad debts of Wall Street, at least temporarily, into the obligations of American taxpayers, was first put forward by the administration late last week, after a series of bold interventions on behalf of ailing private firms seemed unlikely to prevent a crash of world financial markets.
Um, since the American taxpayers are literally trying to save the world here, you think maybe some of the multinational corporations who will benefit from saving the world could actually, you know, build some factories here and maybe give us a break on energy prices for a while so that we can actually generate some tax revenue here?

ouch. just saw this article in the NYT, "The Pain of Selling a Home for Less than the Loan"
This was the situation confronting Mike and Linda Kelly, who needed to sell their house in the foreclosure-plagued Central Valley of California when Mr. Kelly got a new job 75 miles away.
The Kellys owe $300,000 on their house, which has a pool in the back, crepe myrtle bushes in front and, because Mr. Kelly is a ham radio buff, a 40-foot antenna above it. But the best offer they could get gave the bank $220,000.
CitiMortgage said it would approve a sale at that price, but at the last minute told the Kellys they needed to pay $166 a month for the next 20 years, a total of $40,000.
“When you are ready to participate in the loss, feel free to call me,” a Citi loss mitigation specialist, April Easter, wrote to them in an e-mail message.

hey, what a surprise, it's the fault of the Clenis, again:
To some extent, Mr. Bush was simply following a deregulatory pattern set by his predecessor, President Clinton. Perhaps the most significant recent deregulation of the banking industry — the landmark act that allowed commercial banks to expand into other financial activities, like investment banking and insurance — was signed into law by Mr. Clinton in 1999.
and the article is continuing to push the myth that this is all the fault of giving loans to poor (black) Americans:
“The Democrats pushed affordable housing goals, even in the face of evidence that people who got the loans shouldn’t have gotten them,” said Robert E. Litan, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution.
He added: “I blame the Democrats for demanding that Fannie Mae keep buying these loans. I blame the administration for going along with it.”
I guess these are the memes we'll be hearing for the next few days. sigh.

I found the ND-MSU game on regular ESPN (not HD). I didn't realize they could separate the feeds, but I guess that makes sense.
So I've got a relatively shitty picture and sound, but it's better than no game at all.

From the Times:
Still another group of Democrats was pushing for a wider stimulus package that would direct help more directly and immediately to Main Street, perhaps including an increase in unemployment benefits and investments in infrastructure projects, including bridges and roads, that would help to create jobs.
A fourth, smaller group of lawmakers was highly critical and in some cases adamantly opposed to the plan. That group included including Senator Jim Bunning, Republican of Kentucky, and Senator Bernard Sanders, independent of Vermont.
Independent? Ironically, Bernie Sanders is one of the few actual (democratic) socialists elected to public office in America. Surely the paper of record must know this or did the irony meter peg and set off editorial alarms?

Of course Fox News thinks Palin is a godsend for the Republican ticket.
But I think she is a particularly horrible public speaker.
One, she knows nothing about what she's talking about, and two, her voice can't possibly get more lecturey and chirpy and grating.

Day after the election...
CORPORATE WHORE: Oh, by the way, Mr. President, I hope you'll forgive me for the "up yours, nigger."
PRESIDENT OBAMA: Of course.
CORPORATE WHORE: Oh, and I hope you'll have the good taste not to mention that I stopped by!
This article seems to be pretty good. At least, it makes sense in the context of what Atrios and others here have been saying. And it uses language I can mostly understand.
Finally, there is the question of how much it will ultimately cost. “Institutions so far have written down $550 billion globally of bad debt,” said Daniel Alpert, managing director of Westwood Capital. “We think that when you add up all the problems in the residential housing market still to come — further erosion of housing prices, mortgage foreclosures and so on — we are going to need another $1 trillion of write-downs.”
In other words, for all the toxic securities that Wall Street has acknowledged holding, there will be yet more mortgage-backed paper that will go bad as the housing market continues to fall. As much as we all hope the worst is over, it’s probably not.
And as much as we might hope that the government finally has the answer, it probably doesn’t.

Nearly 17 million people in the Horn of Africa are in urgent need of food and other aid - almost twice as many as earlier this year, the UN has said.
Some $700m (£382m) in emergency aid is needed to prevent the region descending into full-scale famine, it said.
Top UN humanitarian official John Holmes said food stocks were critically low in parts of Ethiopia, Somalia, Eritrea, northern Kenya and Uganda.
The area has suffered from drought, conflict and rocketing food prices.
The number of those at risk could rise still further "as the drought deepens and the hunger season continues", Mr Holmes said.

Janna Barber told Channel 4 in Denver that students in her English class were asked to write an essay based on three sources that criticize, undermine or contradict the Republican portrayal of Palin's life as "a fairy tale" during her speech at the Republican National Convention.
"I was shocked. I was like, holy cow. This is just an open door for him to discuss politics with us," Barber told the station.
An English teacher at Denvers Metropolitan State College is being investigated by the college for bias, bullying and harassment after he gave students in his class an assignment to undermine Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin.
Sounds like a pro/con essay to me. Had to do a helluva lot of those in Rhetoric and Composition. The professor takes the pro position and the student has to write the con. Sounds like people were a little miffed that someone had the audacity to question Palin. The nerve!

The entire NYT article carries only this little bit of direct criticism of the bailout plan (aside from the wishy-washy statements of Schumer et al.):
A fourth, smaller group of lawmakers was highly critical and in some cases adamantly opposed to the plan. That group included including Senator Jim Bunning, Republican of Kentucky, and Senator Bernard Sanders, independent of Vermont.
“The free market for all intents and purposes is dead in America,” Mr. Bunning declared on Friday. “The action proposed today by the Treasury Department will take away the free market and institute socialism in America. The American taxpayer has been misled throughout this economic crisis. The government on all fronts has failed the American people miserably.”
Hey, grey lady, it would have been nice to include a quote from Bernie. I suspect he has a slightly different take.

Also good from that story about the whiny little fucking wingnut who was stunned she was being asked to think:

So, no complaint was filed? No phone calls made? No letters written?

one way or another, sure they do.
They're raiding SS to pay for all of this, so if they are still working they pay ss taxes. Later, there may be no ss left for those who paid in. They'll pay for it in higher prices, more local taxes, etc.

Despite what the pols in Washington think, the RTC bailout was also a Wall Street scandal. Many of the financial firms that had financed the S&L industry's reckless lending got to buy back the same properties for pennies from the RTC--profiting on the upside, then again on the downside. Guess who picked up the tab? I suspect Wall Street is envisioning a similar bonanza--the chance to harvest new profit from their own fraud and criminal irresponsibility.

Solution: DO NOT VOTE for any Dem who supports this, OBAMA INCLUDED!
I live in a Southern swing state on Obama's "gettable" list.
If the Dems support this bailout without adequate contingencies (many of which Sanders mentions) I may not vote this November. I certainly will not vote for the Democrat running for Senate/House.
And I will not vote for Obama if he supports this blank check.
I'll wait to see what Obama says. (Though I'm sure he's meeting with Citigroup Chair and former Clinton Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin about how to handle this...a man who is no less culpable than Sen. Phil Gramm).
The Dems oppose the Iraq War, but we're still paying for it as if the Rs are in power.
Meanwhile, SCHIP expansion, Unemployment Insurance extension, Mortgage Relief for Average Citizens is non existence. Nothing has changed in 2 years (I realize Bush wields the veto pen, but it's getting ridiculous).
I am sick of rich people raiding the coffers while the rest of us pay and the Dems act complicit.
If the Ds support this, there will be no money for anything else in the next decades. I will not support them if they support a trillion dollar blank check.
We might as well have Rs in charge in that case. Nothing will have changed.
