GravatarSteve Gilliard predicted Iraq would end like Dien Bien Phu. I think he was right.

Refresh my memory... Sadr is the Marquis of what?

GravatarAnd another option would be to... stop being the sponsor.

No, wait! McCain explained this to me! If we stop taking casualties, we can stay in Iraq. If we don't stop taking casualties, we have to stay in Iraq.

So if we stop sponsoring Iraq, we have to stay. And if we don't stop sponsoring them, we have to stay.

Well, McCain explains it better than I can....

GravatarThe French army got caught in a valley of the same name by Vietnamese forces. They held out for a while, taking a lot of casualties and suffering before their humilating surrender. It was a big part of the end of real French power in Vietnam.

Let's not invoke Christopher Hitchens, mkay?

GravatarSadr is a socialist.

GravatarAnd most importantly, Sadr remains perhaps the most popular figure in Shiite Iraq.

that would only matter if iraq were a democracy. colonies have their leadership pool chosen by their occupiers.

GravatarFurther Ackerman:

The dangers of picking and choosing who the Iraqi premier should be outweigh any imperial temptations we may feel. We'll be just as responsible for Prime Minister Next-Up's mistakes as we are for Maliki's. And the Iraqis will never trust any leader that foreigners pick for them. In what's shaping up to be the Second Sadrist Intifada, you go to war with the prime minister you have, not the prime minister you might want.

GravatarGen Giap surrounded the French and cut them to pieces. Everyone was killed or taken prisoner. It was the end of French Indochina. Gilliard predicted that Sadr would, when it suited Sadr's purposes, cut our lines of supply from Kuwait, surround the green zone in Baghdad, and cut us to pieces.

Gilliard has a series of maps of Dien Bien Phu and Baghdad and the road to the airpost laying out how this would all occur. It is just scary how prophetic he was.

GravatarNo one could have anticipated that a political figure standing up against foreign occupation would be popular with the locals.

GravatarFrom The Previous Thread:

Sinfonian : Meander, that's brilliant. And it means all the more to me as a graduate of Mr. Jefferson's college.

De nada.

Vicki : I love the way Meander responds to commenters. I'd steal his/her style, but then I'd feel guilty about it.

Meander rocks.

I'm immensely flattered that you noticed. And that you think that I have a style worth stealing!

sdf : Meander, that so excellent quote was passed around quite a bit circa November 2004.

That's when I learned it!

GravatarI can't decide whether or not to go to a spring training baseball game this afternoon. I'm afraid I'll be disappointed if I don't go because it's my last chance this year, but if I do go, that's a whole afternoon committed and I do have a lot to do ... and I don't know that I'd be all that excited to spend the money and time to go.

interesting that the people who were opposed to Saddam are also opposed to teh US isnt it?

GravatarThe video in yesterday's Charlie Rose post had a very interesting discussion regarding how the religious thugs tried to take over their neighborhoods in the aftermath of the first Gulf War. Nobody could have predicted, ad nauseum...

Gravatarpie -- i just saw your question. it appears just they learned recently with the revelation by the pentagon:

Bush administration officials said the fuses had been returned and that U.S. diplomats had been in touch with China and Taiwan to explain the error since it was discovered last week. But the Chinese Foreign Ministry, in a statement, said it expected to be told in more detail what happened and declared the shipment could have "negative effects" on relations between Washington and Beijing.

GravatarUnfortunately, we're screwed. Gas prices are going to strangle the economy at every level sooner or later. It's bad when everybody is having to shell out $100 per week or more just to buy gas. And no, the oil companies have zero incentive to lower prices.

Gravatarand I don't know that I'd be all that excited to spend the money and time to go/i>

Watch the first five minutes of "We Were Soldiers Once". Two good things - it shows what happened to the French forces, and Mel Gibson is not on screen during these scenes.

Gravatarhttp://arablinks.blogspot.com/ 20...conference.html

Read and learn

--- Voices of Iraq says the meeting, organized by the Sadr organization, included 300 tribal leaders, Shia and Sunni, from throughout Iraq, but the meeting also dealt with local issues including a promised re-opening of the "Bridge of the Imams" that links this mainly Shiite neighborhood on the west bank of the Euphrates with its twin district Adhamiya, mainly Sunni, on the east bank. (There is a nice satellite map on the website of the Meeting Resistance film, which was mostly filmed in Adhamiya.) Among the main points in the final statement of the meeting: A demand for scheduled withdrawal of the occupation forces from Iraq; and a statement to the effect the foreign forces are responsible for the internal divisions that have plagued Iraq since the invasion.

Statements to VOI by participants indicated that there had been considerable groundwork for this meeting, including reciprocal visits between Shiite and Sunni tribal leaders. Moreover, it looks as if the organizers of this consider this more than just an isolated or local reconciliation event, because VOI leads its story like this:
"The first Iraqi tribal conference wound up its proceedings on Sunday, in Kadhamiya, Baghdad, with the issuance of a final statement that demanded a schedule for the withdrawal of foreign forces from Iraq, and commitment to the return of those removed from their homes, and compensation for their damages."---

GravatarBasra is bigger than Fallujah, but given the incentive, the full force of American military might would eventually reduce it to the same result.

One thing's for sure. The string of US puppet regimes in Iraq is getting to look a lot like the string we propped up in S.Vietnam.

This latest "Tet" by the insurgents is being dealt with by an Iraqi force very much along the lines of the Vietnamization model of the late 60s.
Most likely with the same results as well.

GravatarThis is funny:

TPM: Coleman compares Al Franken to Rush Limbaugh

...But in preparing for his latest fight, Coleman has tried to turn the spotlight back on Franken, criticizing some of the more outrageous or profane things he's said or written in years of comedy routines and liberal commentary.

"If the partisan disease is what's tearing Washington apart, for years he was part of that," said Coleman, who officially launches his campaign Wednesday. "The talk radio culture, the Rush Limbaughs, the Ann Coulters, the Al Frankens. If that's the disease, I've tried to be the cure to that disease for a long time."

Coleman said Franken wouldn't be able to "work across the aisle with people he has so ridiculed and so debased."

GravatarA shiite led Iraq would naturally not side, at least not directly, with Al Qaeda - who are openly Sunni led.

More over, while we've seen an al qaeda attack on our own shores, the al qaeda and similar groups have long been the enemy of many Shiite political groups.

This is yet another case of us acting against our own self-interests nationally to support the self-interests of the sponsors of our politicians.

Money, here, has taken any obligation from our politicians to support our self-interests in Iraq.
