The invasion came under cover of darkness around 8 p.m., after electricity was cut to much of the strip. Teams of soldiers with night-vision goggles advanced on foot, while others traveled in tanks and armored personnel carriers. The only light came from Israeli flares that periodically illuminated the sky, and from the towers of bright orange flame that followed missile strikes, revealing scenes of devastation on the ground.
How can anybody think this is right?

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

I like 'Edmund Fitzgerald' a lot, actually. I'm a bad person.
People simply forget that Lightfoot was a Canadian folkie from the start. "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" was very much in that tradition. If he'd stuck to such stuff exclusively, he'd probably have about the same exposure and audience as, say, Stan Rogers or Bill Stains.
But, he had enough tunes cross over that "Edmund Fitzgerald" seemed wrong to a lot of people, even though it's much in the mold of Lightfoot's earlier tunes, such as "Canadian Railroad Trilogy."

Nire Farina lyrics arising from my memory:
Oh the falcon is a pretty bird wandered as she flew
She danced around and pranced around wherever the warm winds blew
And the falcon is a pretty bird her voice was always still
But men with drums and men with guns they taught her how to kill
Her eye was on the sparrow her mind was on the dove
But no one cared and no one dared to speak to her of love
Her eyes are always hooded her claws are sharp as steel
We teach her not to see too much we teach her not to feel
Jeez they were good...

No. I disagree. There are some here who still interpret any criticism of the Israel government as anti-Semitism.
There's a crucial and important difference between anti-Semitism and legitimate disapproval of a government's behavior--especially when the governments of the U.S. and Israel are as tightly intertwined as they are today. That makes it our business, too.
So, it's more likely that people here are not expressing a generalized and blanket anti-Semitism. They are saying, however, that the disproportionate responses and collective punishment engaged in by the government of Israel is unacceptable.

I can't believe TCM has 5000 Fingers of Dr. T on now.
About the earliest movie I recall from early kidhood, along with Niagra from the same year.
Go build you a log cabin on a mountain so high
And hear the feathered war-birds yell as she goes screaming by
She'll tease you she'll please you she'll satisfy your needs
But someday she might turn around and maul the hand that feeds
Your hours might be numbered your end might come someday
Go break her chain and free her brain and send her on her way
And the falcon is a pretty bird wonders as she flies
She asks us easy questions we tell her easy lies
I don't think they view the falcon as innocuous, but they do see a moral difference between man's use of them in war and their natural predatory ways.
These days the topic always seems to be "Jews Suck."

Brings to mind Robinson Jeffers' 'Hurt Hawks':
I'd sooner, except the penalties, kill a man than a hawk;
but the great redtail
Had nothing left but unable misery
From the bone too shattered for mending, the wing that trailed under his talons when he moved.
We had fed him six weeks, I gave him freedom,
He wandered over the foreland hill and returned in the evening, asking for death,
Not like a beggar, still eyed with the old
Implacable arrogance.
I gave him the lead gift in the twilight.
What fell was relaxed, Owl-downy, soft feminine feathers; but what
Soared: the fierce rush: the night-herons by the flooded river cried fear at its rising
Before it was quite unsheathed from reality.
Yeah, I was just being glib re: the falcon--big difference between rustling up grub and killing for the political designs of a whole other species.

But, you agree, they are atrocities, correct?
Of course they're not exactly like any other atrocities, but share some similarities, especially regarding a pre-concentration camp Warsaw ghetto. Similar in the collective punishment nature of it, the apartheid-like structure, the isolation through walls, checkpoints, assassination, former IDF testifying to torture, etc.
YOur second point is predicated on the idea that there is no such thing as cause and effect, therefore it's to be discounted...

clearly the vid is not a gimick.
It's typically 30 frames per second, 640 x 480 AVI or MOV files, but it's still interesting unless you've got a high quality small video cam. The biggest problem besides the low quality, is that those small cameras are prone to too much hand shake, though a ghetto steady cam (google this) can prevent the shake.

1. Israel's government, Israel's population, Israeli Jews, American Jews, AIPAC, Likud and Zionism are all quite separate things, as are Islam, Hamas, Al Qaeda, Fatah, Wahhabi Islam, Shi'a Islam, Sunni Islam and so on.
2. Violence begets more violence in the Middle East, as elsewhere and elsewhen. It takes courage to refrain from it when faced with it. And the policy of taking out whole families to get to the Hamas leadership (and even murdering them with no trial) sure looks like a war crime to me.
the fact that the elected government and Prime Minister of Palestine didn't flee immediately to their hardened concrete bunkers, with their communication and safety personnel, but instead chose to huddle with their families in their apartments and mosques, or underground, while a withering aerial bombardment rained down upon them, and instead placed their families and neighbors in the flight path of IAF missiles, well, that's the real crime here

I of course agree about violence begetting more violence. And I've oft thought that the more powerful enemy needs to be "the bigger man" as it were, but as David McReynolds notes, it's necessarily the ones who are oppressed who have to rise to the challenge. It's perfectly reasonable for Israel to try to stop the rain of missiles from Gaza.
The bombing does not seem to me either effective or reasonable. In principle the invasion could actually be less destructive, but it depends a great deal on the skill of the invaders and the forbearance of the invaded.
I have no idea how to handle this. I don't blame the Israeli government for taking action, but this particular action seems to me unlikely to do what they want, and likely to generate a new (or perhaps, a larger) generation of people who want to harm Israel.

Look, let us all understand that many Jews are very conflicted and understandably so. They love their people and their country, and we should all respect that. I'm motivated by the horrendous history of the Jewish people, and their horrific victimization. It kills me to see them resort to such inhuman means. I of course agree about violence begetting more violence. And I've oft thought that the more powerful enemy needs to be "the bigger man" as it were, but as David McReynolds notes, it's necessarily the ones who are oppressed who have to rise to the challenge. And nonviolence is actually a tool of the strong...

The truly ironic thing about this is that the Israelis originally supported Hamas, helped its development, as a means of blunting the influence of the more secular PLO, as a sort of divide and conquer strategy, just as it had done to a lesser degree with Hezbollah in Lebanon.

What I was trying to say, Mrs I A-J, is this: Bombs do not discriminate. Five daughters were killed a few days ago. My perhaps naive belief is that a IDF soldier would not willingly shoot five little girls.
It could be that some in Gaza are not very happy that Hamas is lobbing missiles at Israel, but that they are fearful of standing up against this stuff. Those Gazans might like nothing better than for the cops to come and throw the artillery guys into the brig.
I do not know if the IDF will act as cops, but I do think they could be less destructive than bombs. That doesn't mean they will be. But I have to hope for the least terrible outcome of a bad situation.

I do think much of the problem continues as it has because of the tight linkage between the right wing in Israel and the right wing in this country. There are just too many similarities to ignore (see a long comment of mine to that effect here a day or two ago).
The Forward did a survey a couple of years ago, and found that most (roughly 70%) had very moderate views toward Israel and saw peace as an absolute necessity--for Israel's good--even if it meant giving up land taken by force.
Not at all oddly, about the same percentage identified themselves as liberals, Democrats, or the equivalent.
The right wing can only keep power (as we've seen here in the 2004 election) by scaring the bejesus out of the people, and furthering the very circumstances that bring them to power. I don't see much difference in tactics there or here, except that here, even liberal politicians are inclined to bend to right-wing views, because of a longstanding foreign policy posture of the United States to treat Israel as its very own bulldog on a long chain in the Middle East (a policy that's been in place ever since the U.S. suspected that Israel had begun production of nuclear weapons).
One thing for sure, though. Both the United States and Israel will probably destroy themselves, from within, if they continue thinking that overwhelming arms and the use of overwhelming force are the only path to safety and security.

NTodd: alas, when some criticise Israel, it is indeed anti-Semitism, just as when some criticise Obama, it's because they're racist, and Hilary Clinton because they're sexist. In no way does this mean that Irsael (or Obama or Clinton) are above criticism. It does mean that one requires of critics substance. There's plenty of that with respect to Israel's actions with respect to the Palestinians and in Gaza. We should restrict ourselves thereto, and demand it of others, and be careful who we let into our tent. The enemy of my enemy isn't always my friend.

I think it's all woven together. In Israel today, one in four jobs depends upon either the IDF, arms production or arms sales.
Here, about sixty percent of all manufacturing assets are owned by corporations doing business with the Pentagon.
I do think safety and security are part of the equation, though. The powerful and the wealthy have the most to lose in any sudden upset, foreign or domestic, of the political status quo. That's why I think many views in this country that we ordinarily consider maniacal are, from the perspective of those whose wealth or power is potentially threatened, utterly necessary.
The wealthy in this country were greatly fearful of Bolshevism. They'd lose their money and power if such happened here. Hence, even ninety years ago, people like Hoover were making their bones on things like planning the Palmer Raids....

Hiroshima, of course, worked. The US destroyed the Japanese will to resist by incinerating hundreds of thousands of innocent people. My point is that massive violence has often been a successful tactic in human history. Athens still flourishes and Melos is a memory. Of course liberals are complicit. The right demands policies that are bloodthirsty, and liberals tone them down just enough to put a human, "compassionate" face on them.
They play other roles, too, in other areas, some of which are more laudable than that. But in terms of "maintaining empire," liberals are absolutely complicit; it wouldn't be possible without them, IMO.

Well, if you came to power by promising to defend the citizenry from terrorism, is it to your advantage to maintain a steady supply of terrorists against which to wage neverending war?
Is that not what's happened by this country's government in the last seven years? The "war on terror" will go on for decades, and yet, that war on an abstraction has been instrumental in creating more of the terrorists necessary to wage that war....

What's your definition of "failed"? A few survivors?
It's a bit more than that, and the Reich collapsed, with a Jewish State now in existence. The Final Solution was supposed to be the total eradication of Jewry in Europe. Sorry, but it didn't work.
And if the Balts and many Poles and Russians had been willing to risk their lives to help their jewish neighbors instead of collaborating with the Nazis we'd be discussing fantasy, not actual history.
It's called learning lessons. I'm not revising history, I'm saying what can be gleaned from it. Collective action works if there is, you know, a collection of people acting. The individuals and organizations that did act did good, and if we worked harder to foster a willingness to do so there will be greater success.
You keep defending yourself against an accusation I have not made.
Actually, I am not defending myself. Yet you have, on these boards, called people haters of Jews. Sorry about your luck.
Hiroshima, of course, worked.
Yes, I'm sure the Japanese feel the same way. Your humanity is certainly in evidence.

No fucking shit. I've observed, as have others, that there's another fucking lesson to learn. Learn that Hitler lost. Tojo lost. The US lost in Vietnam. The Soviets lost in Afghanistan. The British lost in India. Subjugating a population doesn't win.

bill b: smaller portions, daily exercise, even a ten min. walk. Nothing more. that'll do it.
That, and the anticipation of the Yankees, with Sabathia and Teixera, and the new park next to the old park, still not having succeeded in buying a championship...

Having been shocked by the Reverend Jeremiah Wright, who has said things that would be unthinkable even (or especially) if they were true, we're now well on the road to recovery, thanks to Obama's speech on racism, wherein he distances himself from Wright's "profoundly distorted view of this country," while espousing the healing doctrines of American exceptionalism and business as usual in the Middle East....
In my view, this brings us back inescapably to Obama's vow to combat "the hateful ideologies of radical Islam" (and to defend our staunch ally Israel, and so forth), the very possibility of which requires perpetuating the victimization and racial paranoia and economic stress that Obama decries...to say nothing of the monolithic, undeconstructible faith in our essential "goodness and greatness" that he offers as an antidote to Wright's dour fixation on the people we've killed and tortured despite our generally good intentions.
Let's get over what we've done, so we can do it again, in pursuit of a world that will redeem the bones on which it was built.

Speaking of personal epiphanies, conversations this morning sparked a couple of memories and strung a few things together.
Wife and I were discussing it and ended up with a question.
Can a former student request all materials, files etc. related to that student that were generated during his school years?

Wombat,
Exercise is the missing component. Have been eating properly for some time, rarely drink anymore, and aside from demolishing a cheesecake on New Year's eve, take it pretty easy on the sweets. But I haven't had a gym-compatible schedule in a while, and it shows.

It's a bit more than that, and the Reich collapsed, with a Jewish State now in existence. The Final Solution was supposed to be the total eradication of Jewry in Europe. Sorry, but it didn't work.
The Jewish state is not in Europe. What was Jewish Europe in 1925 is utterly gone.
Actually, I am not defending myself. Yet you have, on these boards, called people haters of Jews. Sorry about your luck.
Oh sure. When people "explain" that the "chosen people" think God gave them rights to murder everyone in their path, I will call them anti-semitic.
Hiroshima, of course, worked.
Yes, I'm sure the Japanese feel the same way. Your humanity is certainly in evidence.
"works" is a functional description, not a moral judgement.
No fucking shit. I've observed, as have others, that there's another fucking lesson to learn. Learn that Hitler lost. Tojo lost. The US lost in Vietnam. The Soviets lost in Afghanistan. The British lost in India. Subjugating a population doesn't win.

Sallyh, I had some last night with snow peas, mushrooms and other stir fried vegetables.
But "decadent" didn't come to mind with the corn. But it came close with the potstickers and a soy/Chinese vinegar/ hot chili sauce and all that.
Which I may have to have ..tomorrow..

Wright's dour fixation on the people we've killed and tortured despite our generally good intentions.
---
Exactly. But like the Chomsky quote on the other thread stated (paraphrased), discourse is constricted to shallow talking points that don't really matter one way or another. Notice how TradMed buried as "radical" what Wright was saying.
Shorter abashed yet comfortable TradMed:
We can't go there or someone's gonna get hurt.
Then, let's vote for him and criticize those who refuse to...

Chomsky wasn't speaking on "America" so much as he was about "Americorp", for whom humiliating, losing wars are profitable, thus "winning". These are less than complete human beings, and should have no standing.
