GravatarAt least 97 percent of the deaths occurred after US President George W. Bush announced the end of “major combat” in Iraq on May 1, 2003, as the military became caught between a raging anti-American insurgency and brutal sectarian strife unleashed since the toppling of Saddam.

Despite the losses, Bush on the eve of the war’s fifth anniversary defended his decision to invade Iraq, vowing no retreat as he promised American soldiers would triumph despite the “high cost in lives and treasure.”

GravatarThe Pentagon keeps two sets of books. The first is the official casualty list posted on the DoD website. The second, hard-to-find set of data is available only on a different website and can be obtained under the Freedom of Information Act. This data shows that the total number of soldiers who have been wounded, injured, or suffered from disease is double the number wounded in combat. New research by the Stiglitz/Bilmes team shows that the majority of these injuries and illnesses can be tied directly to service in the war.

After Linda Bilmes published a paper on the cost to veterans, the then-assistant secretary for Health at the Pentagon phoned her and her dean and demanded, “Where did you get these numbers?”

Bilmes said, “I got them from your website, which we now have access to.”
He said, “Oh, that can’t be.”

Bilmes said, “Well, look at your website.”

He said, “Well, fax me my own website.” So she faxed him his website.

Then they took down those websites. Then they directed the Department of Veterans Affairs to change the Veterans’ websites.

This trickery is seen in the president’s proposal for the FY09 budget for veterans. Ostensibly the budget is being increased by $5 billion, But if you look at the fine print, they’re hoping to recoup over $3 billion by increasing the co-pays and all the fees on the veterans who need to use the services.

Thats PRECISLEY what they say.

"Made in Iran". In Times New-Roman.

GravatarCan any Clinton supporters explain why she seems to feel a need to prove that she has faced great danger (e.g., the purported "sniper fire" when she landed in Bosnia)? Recent electoral history doesn't seem to support the notion that Americans elect the presidential candidate who has faced greater danger in time of war. Bill Clinton (who never served in the military) defeated both George H.W. Bush, naval aviator shot down during World War II and Bob Dole, who was gravely wounded in combat during World War II. George W. Bush (who used the Air National Guard to avoid service in Vietnam) defeated John McCain (2000 primary), a Vietnam War POW, Al Gore (2000 General Election), who was deployed to Vietnam, and John Kerry (decorated Vietnam veteran, wounded in combat). Granted, Shrub had help from the Supreme Court (2000) and Ken Blackwell (2004). But my point is this: if the American people seem plenty willing to elect people who haven't been "in harm's way" to the position of POTUS/C-in-C, why take such risks with her credibility by "embellishing" her exposure to danger? Doesn't this just play to John McCain's strength (heroic POW who was tortured by the North Vietnamese) in the general election?

GravatarAl Gore is short for algorithm.

GravatarI think both Democratic candidates can agree that McCain sucks.

GravatarUmmmm, Nancy Nice, he's certifiable. Will you please put impeachment back on the table. Thanks.
----
In President Bush's view, former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein was many things -- a developer of weapons of mass destruction, an ally of al Qaeda and "a guy that tried to kill my dad."

Recent intelligence reports have already shot down those first two notions. No WMD stockpiles were found in Iraq after the US invasion, and a just-released Pentagon assessment failed to find any "smoking gun" link between Saddam and the terror group that plotted the 9/11 attacks.

Now skepticism is newly enveloping allegations of an Iraqi plot to assassinate former President George H.W. Bush during a trip to Kuwait in 1993. Newsweek's Michael Isikoff reports that the same Pentagon report that has essentially disproved an Iraq-al Qaeda link also calls into question the 1993 plot that spurred former President Bill Clinton to launch a Tomahawk cruise-missle strike against Saddam's Iraqi Intelligence Service (IIS).

Just met with a builder, a local kid who grew up across the street from our family; played ball with my middle son. Decent guy who started building houses after graduating from college 15 years ago. At one time was building 20 to 25 a year; now has only two. He says that in the past 90 days more than three dozen builders have gone Chapter 11 in this city.

And we're here in the provinces, not part of those huge housing bubbles on either coast. Seems to these old eyes that things are apt to get a great deal worse.
