GravatarSallyh, I'm just riffing on the metaphor that's already there.

There is no rational basis for our drug policy. The schedule system cuts Congress out of the debate on what becomes criminalized. And the only criminals involved with marijuana are law enforcement itself.

We throw people in jail for something we don't even believe, laws that were passed solely by racial hysteria ... seventy-one years ago.

So, Drug War = war on you.

But, it's a "moral" issue, which means reason isn't allowed.

Fucking parasites, throwing people away just so they can look "tough." In fifty years, I wouldn't be surprised to find that the politicians had been bribed by the cartels to keep these drugs illegal. They're the only ones who benefit from this psychotic assault on our own people.

GravatarFalstaff, maybe the GOP found out about the original Mother's Day Proclamation:

Arise, then, women of this day!
Arise, all women who have hearts,
Whether our baptism be of water or of tears!

Say firmly:
"We will not have great questions decided by irrelevant agencies,
Our husbands will not come to us, reeking with carnage, for caresses and applause.
Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn
All that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy and patience.
We, the women of one country, will be too tender of those of another country
To allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs."

From the bosom of the devastated Earth a voice goes up with our own.
It says: "Disarm! Disarm! The sword of murder is not the balance of justice."
Blood does not wipe out dishonor, nor violence indicate possession.

GravatarAs men have often forsaken the plough and the anvil at the summons of war,
Let women now leave all that may be left of home for a great and earnest day of counsel.

Let them meet first, as women, to bewail and commemorate the dead.
Let them solemnly take counsel with each other as to the means
Whereby the great human family can live in peace,
Each bearing after his own time the sacred impress, not of Caesar,
But of God.

In the name of womanhood and humanity, I earnestly ask
That a general congress of women without limit of nationality
May be appointed and held at someplace deemed most convenient
And at the earliest period consistent with its objects,
To promote the alliance of the different nationalities,
The amicable settlement of international questions,
The great and general interests of peace.

GravatarMcCain offers the most responsible fiscal policies? Notice that this wasn’t about who you think will be most economically sound in general, or who you think would be better at fiscal management in practice — although even there, nothing in the Republican party’s past 30 years offers any reason to believe that it would be responsible in any way shape or form. But this question was about what the candidate is offering — and McCain’s proposals are, demonstrably, wildly irresponsible.

It’s true that the WSJ seems to have surveyed business economists rather than academics. But this is still shocking.

GravatarProblem is, I had 485 students this last semester. Even if I'd been in prime shape and had all the time in the world, I'm not sure how many would even let me reach out to them.

THERE'S the other part of the problem. People willing to take the time and effort (and lots of both) to reach out to these young people, but there aren't enough of them and they're asked to look after too many, and to top it all off, they're not compensated for it and they're despised by so many out there who are creating the problem and dumping it on the doorstep of the teachers.

Bless you for what you do, and what you wish you could do, if only you were given the support you deserve.

Gravatardonc, if a kid comes to me--and occasionally they do--and asks for my help, I'll refer them to people that can help and talk with them.  But it's draining and time consuming often to get that kid to feel hopeful enough to do it.

My suicide attempt apparently became well known on campus, and I was shocked at how many kids yesterday wanted me to talk about it--and how many have either attempted it or considered doing so.

I don't consider this a positive sign.
