She called my wife right after the baby was born, and my father when he was in the hospital. We're like family." But nope, I'm not at all a biased political reporter.

GravatarThis book talk reminds me that when I was taking lit courses in the late '70s, writers like John Barth and Jerzy Kosinski were teh hot.

I was OK with "Being There", although I thought the concept was better than the execution.

But I balked at "The Sot-Weed Factor"; I very dimly recall that it was written in a synthetic argot; IMO, it proved the point that writing in dialect is perilous and best done sparingly. The professor, or instructor, or whatever she was just loved the book, and claimed there were "jokes within jokes" on many levels, etc. I still think she gave me a lower grade for the course because I didn't play up to her enthusiasm for the book.

Real breakthrough stuff, supposedly. I'm not sure if they're still considered masterpieces, but I don't hear much about either writer any more. Incidentally, Vonnegut was dismissed out of hand as primitive dreck-- by faculty members, that is.

I know someone who's been a career English teacher and administrator in both high school and college, and I notice that he too seems to cozy up to certain writers. But it seems to do more with how much he likes "teaching" these authors, and how accepted or hyped they are by his peers.

When his son, a smart kid, was assigned Updike in high school, the guy announced, "Dan is reading Updike" clearly dropping the name as if he were announcing that Dan was accepted as a cello pupil by Yo-Yo Ma or something.

Gravatarwhat I want to know is why Mrs. Dalloway is considered to be such an excellent tale. I couldn't develop any interest in the characters. They seemed to be cardboard cutouts moving through scenery, and maybe that was the point.

GravatarLook, the "professional politcal consultant" is just a subspieces of the most malignant, parasitic "profession" of all.

The marketing asshat.

Those who take some idiotic "trend" and conflate it into "the solution" to sell crap to the masses. Crap can be soap, it can be an automobile, or it can be political candidate. The idea is to sell, based on image, not substance. The purpose of soap is to clean you, not to make you tingle with cleanliness. The purpose of an automobile is to get you from point a to point b, not to attract a mate.

But then again, we live in a society where, as Fernando taught us, it is much more important to look good than to feel good.

GravatarBut other current and former officials cautioned that the administration had invested so much in General Musharraf’s success that its leverage was now limited. Similarly, they and Pakistan experts said that a series of policy miscalculations had left the administration with few good options.

Isn't that just great news.

But you have to have an actual policy in order for there to be a miscalculation, don't you?

GravatarShayla sha(y)-la is pronounced SHAY-lah. It is of Gaelic origin, and its meaning is "from the fairy palace". A variant of Sheila (Irish, Gaelic) "blind". Also possibly a short form of Micheala, from Michael (Hebrew) "who is like the Lord?" or a rhyming name based on Kayla.

Shayla has 12 variant forms: Shaela, Shae-lyn, Shaila, Shailagh, Shailyn, Shaylah, Shayleen, Shaylene, Shaylyn, Shaylynn, Shaylynne and Shealynn.

Names that sound like Shayla are Shyla, Sheyla and Shaylla.

Shayla is a popular female first name and a very rare surname (source: 1990 U.S. Census). Displayed below is the baby name popularity trend for the girl's name Shayla.

GravatarI participated in one of Murray's recent on-line chats for the Post. I kept sending in questions like, "How much could the Post save by firing Shailagh and just printing RNC talking points verbatim?" They finally posted something about how they were getting too many questions about the practice of journalism and those should be sent to Howie Kurtz instead.

So I asked why The Village was such a thoroughly corrupt place, both politically and socially. Murray took that one and answered something along the lines of, "Because everyone is spending someone else's money."

I figure you can interpret that one of two ways: either Murray was admitting to being on the take, a la Armstrong Williams, or Murray is too stupid to realize that I include the Beltway punditry as part of the corruption.

There's a story about Sidney Morgenbesser, a (wonderful) philosophy professor, who heard a lecturer wax wroth on the notion that there are many linguistic examples of double negatives advanced as positives--'No, no, really? Wow!', for instance--but none of double positives advanced as negatives. Morgenbesser shook his head, and muttered, so everybody could hear him, a disgusted, 'Yeah, yeah.'

GravatarBob Shrum?

GravatarCan we all get behind Edwards for president?

I know that he's the one that the Republicans fear the most. He's the most anti-corporate, besides, perhaps Kucinich.
I like Kucinich best, but really, Americans will not vote for a president with an ethnic-sounding name. (And, to make another point based on a triviality...he's too short.)

We all know the various problems with Hillary (being unelectable is the main one) ...Obama is flawed (ethnic sounding name, will lose the south, and needs to explain why that indicted guy helped him buy his house.)

I think we need to support Edwards.

Gravatarhuh?

anyway, be sure to see the video bit of Bill Maher from last night. It even made CNN today!

GravatarI cannot get behind Edwards. I think he is unelectable to those who are still swaying on their choices.

Have you ever seen his campaign mgr on tv? I have, and it was a HUGE turn off. This guy represents him and wow. All i can say is he will turn tons of ppl off. The fact this guy was chosen as campaign mgr says a lot about the person running imo.

I of course would support Edwards if he got the nod. I'm an independent liberal, pretty damn old, and don't forsee myself ever voting republican again.

GravatarShe is fucking moron, yes, but the Devil?
Well, ok, if you insist.

GravatarMy guesses on the other person would be Mary Beth Cahill, because of the shared Oirishry, or Donna Brazile because of the hackery.
