Sinfonian, I have a feeling that the reason there seem to be so many hypocrites in the GOP is not that the GOP induces hypocrisy, but that the fearful, disturbed, self-hating types seek to hide within the GOP rather than face whatever ostensibly non-normative urges they have. They feel comforted belonging to the "daddy party", and outwardly conform to hide their shame. Liberals do not offer forgiveness, absolution, do-overs, or punishment -- they are the party of acceptance. (That's liberals, not necessarily Democrats who have a checkered history wrt social tolerance.)

I saw a comment somewhere that made some sense to me.
That the Democrats have considerable political risk in the short term by forcing a withdrawal because of the likely violence that would ensue and other problems that may occur - because they would be blamed on the Dems by the Publics. They (in Congress) would start owning the war if they take action.
If they do little or nothing, they face less political risk because the public will still mostly blame the Publics for the war, and that will help us in '08.
If that analysis makes sense or is accurate, man, that's fucked up.

Neither a prognostication nor original to Nader, but I agree with you nonetheless. One can barely slip a piece of paper between the parties on most positions which matter. Teh gays and abortion, etc., are used to keep the pot stirring, but the bottom line is Dems will do no more than Repubs. Impossible to claim one has gotten us into or out of more wars than the other, for example, and they are still convinced, in the words of George Patton, that "All real Americans love war!"

“Rumsfeld will serve on a task force of scholars and experts who will focus on issues pertaining to ‘ideology and terror,’ the conservative think tank announced Friday in a press release.”
Hoover director John Raisian said Rumsfeld will offer strategic direction on how the U.S. should proceed in a post 9/11 world. “I have asked Don to join the distinguished group of scholars that will pursue new insights on the direction of thinking that the United States might consider going forward.”

Oh, come on. They all proclaim their rugged independence, then go back home or read a few polls, and do a 180 on whatever the topic du jour is.
It's a requisite condition of the position. True for almost anyone in a leadership role. You have to appear resolute. You have to do what is possible, and that means consider the opinions of those you lead. You proclaim your independence so you don't appear weak and pusillanimous. You listen to what the group is saying so you can provide them enough of what they want/need so they leave you in "power."
Fail to understand that dynamic, you never get elected to anything above local school board, nor rise higher in the hierarchy than jr. flunky.

i don't know that there's any hope of them for now. even if a dem wins the WH in 2008, it'll be a balancing act for 'em. there's no way they win reelection in 2012 if they don't get some troops out, but they also lose if they get them all out.

The npr article is bullshit. Surprise! The dems have been trying to reach a ‘compromise’ bill for a while. Before the recess each side came up with bills. Some repub bills were just statements saying the Iraq war was going great. The best the repubs could come up with was some warner piece of shit that went no where. Mostly the repubs have filibustered anything the dems have put forward. The “liberal media” is lying to you. Another surprise!
The senate already voted on the Levin Reed amendment:
52-47 — Republicans block Levin-Reed amendment
By Klaus Marre
July 18, 2007
After an all-night debate session, Republicans succeeded Wednesday in blocking an amendment that would have required President Bush to begin withdrawing troops from Iraq within 120 days. http://thehill.com/leading-the-n...2007-07-

The npr article is bullshit. Surprise! The dems have been trying to reach a ‘compromise’ bill for a while. Before the recess each side came up with bills.
yes, but what they should be doing is not putting ANY authorization bill through, rather than a watered-down compromise. that's the point. the repubs can block, but they can't pass.
as with impeachment, the repub machine already poisoned the perfectly acceptable strategy of shutting down the gov't rather than compromise by doing so with the insignificant newt gingadulterer's contract on america.
In 1984, Jackson became the second African American (after Shirley Chisholm) to mount a nationwide campaign for President of the United States, running as a Democrat.
In the primaries, Jackson, who had been written off by pundits as a fringe candidate with little chance at winning the nomination, surprised many when he took third place behind Senator Gary Hart and former Vice President Walter Mondale, who eventually won the nomination. Jackson garnered 3.5 million votes and won five primaries, including Michigan.
As he had gained 21% of the popular vote but only 8% of delegates, he afterwards complained that he had been handicapped by party rules. While Mondale (in the words of his aides) was determined to establish a precedent with his vice presidential candidate by picking a woman or visible minority, Jackson criticized the screening process as a "p.r. parade of personalities". He also mocked Mondale, saying that Hubert Humphrey was the "last significant politician out of the St. Paul–Minneapolis" area. [4]

Don't know about the greatest show ever made, but I really liked Lexx.
Sallyh -- I guess part of the reason I'm pissed off about the creature movies on Sci Fi is that they passed on my chupacabra pitch in favor of the totally awful chupacabra movie they made.

Why I liked about Lexx, especially season two, was how they'd pick up some local yokels who, without any intentional malice on the Lexx's crew part, would get themselves all horribly killed by the show's end.

i propose that asimov was ambivalent through necessity. it would be nearly impossible to write that many books from the same perspective.

FReeper sez Osama was on a plate:
Democrats have a fixation on portraying war as a cop show.
According to them, the object of our efforts after 9/11 should be to catch "the perp" and bring him to justice. That is how Clinton treated the first World Trade Center attack in 1993... he jailed "the perps." We all know how well that worked out.
When offered bin Laden on a plate, Clinton turned it down, saying we didn't have sufficient evidence to hold him. The guy had by that time blown up several of our embassies, tried to blow up the World Trade Center towers, and Clinton wanted to read him his Miranda rights.
To hear Democrats tell it, once we capture bin Laden, we're done. When the next thing blows up they'll presumably want to catch that perp, too.
Meanwhile they hector the rest of us about "due process" and habeus corpus and "lack of trials" for enemy combatants captured on the battlefield.
If today's Democrats had been prosecuting World War II, they'd have tried to do it in a courtroom.
Like the Nuremberg Trials, maybe?

I had a humbling experience today.
I have a friend who is deaf and sells a street magazine at the entrance of the supermarket. This afternoon, she asked me to watch her stuff and sell her magazines while she went to the washroom, so I stood in her place displaying her magazine. A few people bought a magazine from me. But people definitely looked at me differently than they normally do.
A good experience nonetheless. I reccommend it to everyone.

If today's republicans were in charge on 9/11, they would have killed upwards of one million innocent people and spent a trillion dollars of taxpayer money to radicalize the islamic world and make this planet a far more dangerous place for everyone.

It may have been the budget -- they don't spend shit on those movies. My partner and I had a name producer who was going to cover the additional cost, but he wanted to keep European distribution rights to pay for his investment (would have doubled their usual budget). I'll never know for sure, because the folks at SciFi never said why they passed on it.
