Just driving by to say that The Last Legion was the worst movie I have seen since Battleship Earth.
You know, I used to have a slight respect for our generals, but not any more:
Speaking to Pentagon reporters Friday via teleconference from Iraq, Lynch said, "Only when the Iraqi security forces come forward and say, 'OK, here I am, I'm trained and equipped, I'm ready, I'm the Iraqi army or I'm the Iraqi police,' can I turn those sanctuaries over, and that's not going to happen between now and Christmas."

Thanks.
I asked him a question at the Yearly Kos convention. I told him how ABC/Radio Disney had my blog shut down, how the hosts talked about killing people on the air and how since the FCC rules say nothing about killing people on the air I took it to the advertisers.
Then I asked, "How does the call for killing people on the air serve the public good."
He didn't know where I was coming from (I was later told that I wasn't specific enough and that he probably thought I was just talking about generic violence on radio) and said that going to the advertisers was the right thing to do.
But I'm thinking about droping him a follow up letter and explaining that one reason that I believe that Disney was so eager to support the hosts because they were trying to sell their "assets" and that if they got fired or their new boss found out how much money they were losing it would put a wrench in the sale (or at least the sale price).

S P O C K O,
The answer is not in questioning it is in explaining. If people do not know of injustice then they have no stake in correcting such things.
Ignorance is the state that "They" would like to keep us in. If people knew and understood that corporations are taking their power and using it to stifle objective and fair discourse, then the equation can be changed.
Asking questions is a good start but the questions can be stifled as well. (IOW, the offer stands.)

no one who lunches and takes benes from murdoch is wholly "good." even her hubby, if he does (and i don't know in his case). i've read her words rather closely, and i think she's made it very clear what she is: the "moderate" candidate when "moderation" is supporting lifetime sentences of hard labor instead of gas chambers.
if i'm being extreme, it's because i don't think it's "better" that she'll continue a war which has killed ~600K iraqis such that only 10K/yr die instead of 100.

I would have LOVED to meet you in Chicago. I did get Athenae down to the bar on Saturday night and it was WONDERFUL! I dragged her over to Digby and introduced them to each other.
In my letter to the commissioner I think what I will do is provide him clips and also another good example of how ownership in the hands of a few forces them to do things that are unthinkable.
At YKos he talked about the rubberstamp of licensing.
The way that licensing has become a rubber stamp makes it almost impossible to impact is one of them.
Frankly KSFO could have or should have lost their license over their behavior.
Some how I don't believe that the community standards of San Francisco support inciting violence toward blacks, liberals, democrats and journalists. Yet they supported ALL those things when they supported the hosts on KSFO.

Friday: 1 GI, 45 Iraqis Killed; 36 Iraqis Wounded
Updated at 6:40 p.m. EDT, Aug. 24, 2007
So, today, Iraqis got off pretty lightly, so to speak. Using NTodd's 11x factor, it's only been about 1/17th of a US 9/11 death toll.
Of course, there was only one 9/11 day in the US--Iraqis get a portion of one or more every single day.
What a horrible thing we have done.

Echidne,
though my dog is not well at all and the day approaches when I have to decide.
The very best that you can do is try to find the optimum time of quality of life. The distress you suffer will very markedly ease the transition of those you love. To love is to be able to release those you love, but only at the time that best suits those you love, and not you.
That is all I ask out of life.

I will try draining the anger into the ground. Let's hope the raccoons aren't out there snacking.
Not a good idea. It gets into creeks and steams and into the water supply. Better to go to a designated disposal center. Or you can wait for the designated day of the month that recycling picks up hazardous material. Bear in mind that you may have to make an appointment to schedule collection of anger.

Brzezinski Offers Support for Obama
Right on the heels of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton’s assertion that she could handle the political ramifications of a terrorist attack better than her Democratic rivals, a major foreign policy figure associated with Democrats endorsed her archrival, Senator Barack Obama.
In an interview with Al Hunt that will air on Bloomberg’s “Political Capital” at 11 p.m. tonight, Zbigniew Brzezinski said that Mr. Obama is “clearly more effective and has the upper hand.” The national security adviser under President Jimmy Carter continued, “There is a need for a fundamental rethinking of how we conduct world affairs, and Obama seems to me to have both the guts and the intelligence to address that issue and to change the nature of America’s relationship with the world.'’
He called Mrs. Clinton’s foreign policy “very conventional.”
“I don’t think the country needs to go back to what we had eight years ago,” Mr. Brzezinski said.

Documents obtained by IraqSlogger show Iraqi Prime Minister Maliki's chief Iraqi opponent, Ayad Allawi, is paying Washington lobbyists with close ties to the White House $300,000 to help with Allawi's efforts in the U.S. to promote himself and undermine Maliki.
The powerhouse Republican firm retained by Allawi is Barbour, Griffith, & Rogers (BGR), and its BGR International unit is headed by President's Bush's one-time White House point man on Iraq, Robert Blackwill, who will lead the lobbying efforts on Allawi's behalf.

This is a bit off topic, but I find when I talk to young children (grade school and older), it's better to talk to them as adults, or in the same manner. I don't really modify my behaviour at all. I think this is better because you take a child seriously. Too often I see people dumb themselves around them, and while they may not have tons of knowledge, they have intuition, and they know if you're talking down to them.

Q: How many Neo-Cons does it take to change a light bulb?
Would it be overly cynical of me to suggest that Pete Hoekstra's wanton lust for throwing our money and lives into the grinder of the military industrial complex might be predicated on something other than our best interests?
Does it matter to anyone that Ol' Sneaky Pete was given $25,750 by the defense industry in '06? Or that the energy/nat resource sector gave him $16,980 that same election cycle?
Is it cynical of me to mistrust the hawkishness of a man who numbers Boeing Co, General Dynamics, General Motors, Lockheed Martin, and Northrop Grumman among his biggest financial supporters? Or am I getting all mired down in reality based thinking?
"Facts are stupid things" --Ronnie Reagan
Folks will just have to excuse me if I'm less concerned with sound bytes about mythical tax and spend democrats than I am with the reality of attack-and-spend "conservatives".
Those quotes around the word conservative are there because someone who's only conservative with their own life and their own money isn't a *real* conservative.

Although this information is about a year old I will share it with the assembly just because I am tired of seeing advertisements for erectile dysfunction on my television.
When I had my last physical before the current situation my doctor asked if I needed any Viagra or Cyalis or Levitra to which I replied no. I had to see the urologist because I am the right age and have an unusually shaped prostate gland that has to be inspected by an expert. He asked me if I needed any Levitrata, Viagra, or Cialias to which I replied No.
I thought about this and when I went back for my follow-up with my doctor I asked the question that I came up with. Now male anatomy is such that when males are young sex is about all they think about. (Junior high and high school are the worst.) But as us guys get older it does diminish some.
As it diminishes we actually do think about it less and less. As we think about it less and less the NEED becomes less and less. It is not that we can't it is that we really don't NEED to. (In a lot of ways it is fucking relief)
My question was this, "If a guy can't, why would he want to take a drug so he can?" The need is no longer there and he can kind of relax. I guess maybe SHE might want to but in general if you can't, you really don't WANT to.

Today's Justin Raimondo column dissects the lies in the Freedon Watchers' ad campaign and comments on the the major funders listed in a WaPo article.
Here is the real face of the War Party: openly and brazenly peddling long-debunked myths designed to appeal to the emotions, rather than the intellect. This is classic war propaganda produced without respect for the facts of reality or the most basic human decency.
So what else is new?
What's interesting, aside from the crude content of these ads, is their funding: who's paying for this pack of lies? The Washington Post lists the major donors:
Raimondo thinks this campaign will boomerang--too optimistic?

first time: at a school lecture, hosted by the college rethugs. i dressed up and was all conservative-looking, although i was the only non-white face in the crowd. during questions, he ignored my raised hand until the end, when i was the only one left. he said then, "well, that's all the time we have" and left.
second time: in a bar. a public, but rather small and intimate place, also on campus. he was drinking with a small group, one of whom i knew as a student. i sat down, bought him a drink, and made nice small talk with others in the group, not trying to act as if i was there b/c of him only. when i finally started to include him in the conversation, he got up and left, his drink unfinished.
third time: at AEI, in DC for the lieberman/mccain lovefest. chickenhearted mother didn't even speak with me- he saw me sitting b/w to an exec from the lincoln group and some arms dealer, chatting it up and laughing. again, i was the only dark face there not serving the food. so he noticed me, and my seat in the middle of the room, and B-lined all the way to the back, behind the cameras.

Prof,
I was a single parent with my two older sons for seven years, and I always tried to pull off the "treat 'em like an adult" thing. But there were times when I had to say no or otherwise raise holy hell with them. They'd ask why, and I tell them and then remind them that it was my job.
They were fine with that. Now they're both attorneys. I have other faults, too.

i guess i'm not a parent so i really don't know, but i've never had a problem with disciplining younglings. look 'em in the eye, say no, and move on to the next topic. if you can take 2-5mins of crying, they usually seem to get over it. but what do i know?

when i say "odd looking" i mean "mixed race." nothing, and i mean nothing, not even pregnancy, gets more stoopit kweshuns from strangers on the street. if you're not white and have a "white" hair color, it's even more ridiculous. people are so fucking obsessed about "race" in this country. although- it's getting better. a lot. the Kidz are truly Alright. it the old timers who can't seem to let it go.
re short men: to me, it's like bald men. women really don't care. i'll confess, i get a hard clit for the occasionally-found brilliant man, and it doesn't matter what he looks like. i'm sure most str8 women are the same. if you do it for her, you do. if you don't, all the money, power, cock inches or athletic prowess won't matter. and if you do, those things won't matter either.
there's a woman for every man, and a man for every man, and a woman for every woman, and a man for every woman. and then some. seriously, if you doubt this- go out in public and just start chatting it up with what you want. i used to be ugly, but i've never had a hard time getting It, as i learned this truth early on. even the "best" people are often really lonely, and a smile and a little concern for your fellow human is the easiest and most successful way of satisfying that itch.
hmmm...i guess i should head out and git it on. later, taters.

one last and then it's into the Boots: Wilson is a real, honest to god gentleman. he took the time to speak with me, despite the differences in our station, and in a group of Beltway Elites, when he didn't have to. and he didn't flirt, or shy away from difficult topics.
i'm one of the original Foil Wearing Doomsayers, and no one hates the MIC more than i do. but if we had more people like Wilson and his wife in those positions, i'd be ready and willing to believe in "america's greatness" in the world again. seriously- he's a terrific, intelligent, compassionate guy. or at least, that's my impression after a couple of meetings.
ok, i'm gone. sleep well, all. and yes, goddess E: we should compare family in the old country some time. i'm sure you're as proud as i am that finland was the very *last* nation in Yurp to go xtian. fucking swedes.

This is true. Whenever something goes wrong with famous blacks there's this extraordinary willingness waiting just under the surface to reassure anyone listening that this is the final straw and justice cannot wait. When something goes wrong with whites, there is a variety of responses depending on the situation, sometimes very gentle.

I'm surprised that more Republicans haven't defended Vick. They would use the excuse that "people are jealous of his wealth, and his right to entertain himself as he sees fit. He's simply enjoying his wealth, and to prevent him doing so is Communism".
That's pretty sick, but it's a realistic Republican position.

But I've never loved anyone the way I've loved my kids, and there's a piece of me I'd never have known about were it not for them. And I think they make the world a better place.

Did you ever listen to the commentary on The Naked Gun DVD? It's one of the best I've heard.
Kurt Russell does excellent, usually drunken, commentaries - the ones for Used Cars and Big Trouble in Little China are possibly funnier than the movies.

Listen to the never-ending whine./ The darkness sleeps. You cannot./ You can hear her dance. It is hot./ When the dance is over she will dine.
You'll be her meal, laid out on bed./ Unless you rise and find her first,/ and squash her and her bloody thirst,/she will turn your pillows red.

I like Rowan Atkinson, but never liked Mr Bean (tv or movie )
The movie was an abomination and should not be viewed by anyone.
The live action TV series was excellent, and had some incredibly inventive physical and situational comedy.
I haven't seen enough of the cartoon series to render an opinion on that.

I've been blue of late and I apologize if I've added to others' sadness. So I pop in now to say something good--that Feingold Progressive Politics video? A dear young friend did the signs he held up, my fav being My Next President will be a Cheesehead! She's a senior in college and works her young butt off for progressive causes. My kids are doing the same.
Those of you still raising young ones, the day will dawn when you will reap what you've sown. And having gotten to know some of you, I can go to sleep tonight knowing the best is truly yet to come.

Out of the night that covers me
Black as the pit from pole to pole
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Despite the bludgeonings of chance,
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this vale of wrath and tears
Lies but the horror of the shade,
And all the passing of the years
Finds, and shall find me, unafraid.
It matters not how straight the gate
Nor charged with punishment the scroll.
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.
