MMM, so fristy

Hey all, less than 72 hours of the Cheney presidency left.

"Ding Dong, the Witch is Dead!"

GravatarThe media and right wing blogs are circulating incorrect information about the inauguration.

GravatarIs this more Gypsy shit or what?

GravatarMargo and the Nuclear So and Sos?
Sure, why not, somebody already used the name 'the Beatles'.
.

GravatarHi Agent!

GravatarThe cost of Obama's inauguration? 30 billion.

(includes all costs incurred on that day, including Iraq, Afghanistan, the State Deptarment, and Congressional Republican Whore/Toupee subsidies)

GravatarWhy Vicki, good evening.

GravatarHi Agent!

GravatarAtrios is challenged by music.

GravatarHi M31,

After I said hi to AO, I felt guilty for not saying hi to you. Don't wanna be rude, although I don't know you. Or do I?

Anyway, welcome. Regardless.

GravatarI'm challenged by music. Being in a band will do that to ya.

If I still had nerves, I'd love to continue to play music. I'm a wreck and can only do music when I'm sufficiently plied with alcohol. It's pretty sad, but that's when my fingers work.

Gravatarwow, sidras got us a new thread, fast.

So 10 years ago I'm in Budapest Hungary staying at the Hotel Kempenski, the only 5-star there at the time. I call the elevator, it stops at my floor, the door opens and who's alone on the elevator - Lou effin' Reed. So I say 'you're Lou Reed?' He grunts or nods in the positive somehow.
I couldn't think of anything else to say.

Nope. Yeah, I was six when Ian Curtis offed himself, but I love that shit.

On Feb. 1, California will cut off all money and caregivers for the blind and disabled. If you are in CA and know a blind or disabled person, please check on them then. They may be without food or assistance as of that date.

Admit It: The Surge Worked
By Peter Beinart

http://www.washingtonpost.com/ wp...id=opinionsbox1

In which the intrepid and wisdomy young pundit moves the goal posts, and claims the Surge worked, even though

Is the surge solely responsible for the turnaround? Of course not. Al-Qaeda alienated the Sunni tribes; Moqtada al-Sadr's Mahdi Army decided to stand down; the United States assassinated key insurgent and militia leaders, all of which mattered as much if not more than the increase in U.S. troops. And the decline in violence isn't necessarily permanent. Iraq watchers warn that communal distrust remains high; if someone strikes a match, civil war could again rage out of control.

GravatarMassey Hall, located at 178 Victoria Street, downtown Toronto, was built in 1894 by architect Sidney Badgley and financed by Hart Massey of Massey-Harris (later Massey Ferguson, then Varity Corporation). In 1933, the Massey Foundation undertook the further renovations to the hall. It is currently used for a variety of events and is operated by the same corporation as Roy Thomson Hall. The concert hall's debut concert was on June 14, 1894.

Massey Hall was the site of the legendary Charlie Parker-Dizzy Gillespie concert recorded as Jazz at Massey Hall in May 1953. Accompanying Gillespie and Parker in this acoustically sound hall were Bud Powell, Max Roach and Charles Mingus.

GravatarProfWombat,

Elliot Fisk's is my very favorite guitar version of the Chaconne. On violin I still like the Hillary Hahn recording she made when she was a teenager.

I do not know how many recordings I have of it.

It is a veritable compendium of technique for the violin, and guitar as well, oddly. I play sections of it almosy daily as "etudes." I may never be able to pull off a complete and satisfying reading of it myself.

Yes, I went to school with Fleming, but she is a virtuoso, and I am a nurse.

Not your average nurse, probably, but a nurse indeed. And that's a good thing.

GravatarI can't bitch about my pay, Blue in C. Well OK I can.

But what really toasts me is the way Phoenix pays its police. I think they start at $28K a year. They can't even afford to fucking live here on that kind of pay.

GravatarOne O'clock Jump is also on the Basie at Newport CD.

GravatarThers, your wife is indeed extraordinary.

I think in Monsieur's case, it's obvious he married a freak of nature.

GravatarThe issue isn't whether universal health benefits would be nice to have. They would. The issue is whether we can afford it. We can't.
manny

Oh, stop it. Stop that bullshit right now.

We CAN afford it.

GravatarTerryC: I'd go further: we can't afford not to do it.

GravatarCircular breathing, that's how he did it.
Karin Hussein

Featured in, of all places, a Spider Robinson novel, "Variable Star" (with a little help from RAH)

GravatarTerryC: I'd go further: we can't afford not to do it.
ProfWombat

Damn straight.

Pull out of Iraq and make the rich pay their fair share of taxes and we'd have more than enough.

GravatarI like the sax performance, Kidnap. Where is that, it looks like a log cabin?

GravatarIn the global picture in fact American workers are hamstrung by the fact their employers have to bear these costs, which is killing American industry.

To pin-headedly pretend otherwise is to be against America.

Gravatarwell, I guess we did rock on, at that.

GravatarTough luck doc.

GravatarSallyh, we're all freaks of nature here.

GravatarKarin, I've been crying for hours for the past week, every day.

Normal humans don't do that.

Gravatar"Normal humans don't do that."

depressed ones do.

Gravatarkarl rove: president elect obama, how did you get by the laser fields...

obama: ah, ha. the laser fields...

GravatarOMG, Crooks & Liars linked to my favorite song in Guys & Dolls.
It doesn't get any better than this.
http://lnmc.crooksandliars.com/d...lub-stubby- kaye

GravatarTerryC: don't even have to do that. Divert all the resources now going into redundant specialty procedures and move them to primary care. Limit residencies in specialties. Forgive medical students' debt for service in needed specialties in underserved areas. Single payer, single form, single riskpool, to wit, everyone in the goddamned country. Mandate best practices and evidence based medicine. Attack medical error with the vigor the airlines and the navy deal with error. Eliminate for-profit hospitals, surgical centers, specialty clinics, imaging units. Provide insurance, such as Medicare, with its 5% overhead, rather than relying on private for-profit insurance, with its 30% overhead.

And that, m'dear, is just on my first day in office, after I, as commander in chief, close Guantanamo--not just the prison, the whole base--revoke the gag rule, and call Stevens, Ginzburg and Souter and tell them that I'll appoint Akhil Reed Ahmar, Erwin Chermerinsky and Lawrence Tribe to their seats.

Then, I'd go to sleep; enough loafing. Israel and Palestine await...

Gravatarlike the sax performance, Kidnap. Where is that, it looks like a log cabin?

GravatarI did when I was going through my divorce.

Gravatarlooks like Cheney's little adventure in Georgia is starting to receive blowback:

BISHKEK, (AFP) - - Kyrgystan will order the closure of a US military airbase used to support operations in Afghanistan "in a matter of days" under pressure from Russia, a senior Kyrgyz official told AFP.

"The presidential decree on the annulment of the agreement with the United States is already prepared. In a matter of days it will be published in the Kyrgyz media," the official told AFP, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The official said Russia had urged Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiyev to announce the closure of the base in exchange for financial help to the cash-strapped Central Asian nation.

the version of this song he did on xm's "loft session" in 2005, solo with electric guitar, has to be heard to be believed.

GravatarWho could have predicted that Russia, which is rather closer to Georgia than we, might take umbrage at our posturing on Georgia/Ossetia, and brush us off, to the delight of the home folk and at little, if any, risk, given their importance as Europe's energy supplier?

Y'know, I can come up with this in minutes, and all I do is read the papers...

GravatarTake all the strength we have, please. I'm brimming with it now, but I may need to tap yours at a later date. Pass it on.

GravatarHe's always had the eyepatch. You just couldn't see it before because his hat was strategically dipped below that eye. And his scarf was apricot.

GravatarThank you, God, for allowing Obama to be elected...in a majority.

GravatarSometimes people give up. Maybe they're hospital patients and they're sick as hell. Maybe they're exhausted family members. Or overworked residents.

But nurses never give up.

They don't have time to.

Woo hoo! I taught myself how to knit gloves a few months ago from an article. Now that's tricksy, but fun.

Gravatarkind of sheety in here

GravatarThat brain was a very odd knitting project. Even stranger than the ones I've seen of the FSM or of squid.

GravatarWoo hoo! I taught myself how to knit gloves a few months ago from an article. Now that's tricksy, but fun.

You are a good person to ask about socks. My qigong teacher has different size ankles. Can I make the socks based on the average ankle width or will one fall off?

GravatarO Best Beloved...

GravatarYou look at portraits of George Washington, he had a quite large nose.

Gravatar"Why ddn't yu just mail it?"

(Looks over shoulder) "We have a hovercraft."

GravatarGood pm/am.

Attack medical error with the vigor the airlines and the navy deal with error.

Prof, you remind me that if we could just convince a very militaristic and nationalistic populace that healthcare - and it's practitioners - are every bit as important as the us military, and show people how we can apply the very same patriotic impulse to healthcare, that we apply to any other service.
Just as soldiers have a higher calling other than personal enrichment, so too can our health system mirror the same level of national commitment.
And you've got my vote for POTUS anyday.

GravatarEchidne,

if they are very, very different sizes, you may have to modify the number of stitches around the ankle. I would worry more about making them too tight if one of the ankles is larger due to an injury or swelling - you don't want to impede the circulation. If they aren't more than an inch or so different, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

GravatarElias: you remind me of the classic James essay, 'The Moral Equivalent of War'; peace hath its victories no less renowned...

Would that the word would get around...

GravatarAnd thank you

GravatarNow explain that using evolutionary psychology Just So stories....
Echidne

I just cut & paste, I don't explain 'em.
