Is the surge solely responsible for the turnaround? Of course not. Al-Qaeda alienated the Sunni tribes; Moqtada al-Sadr's Mahdi Army decided to stand down; the United States assassinated key insurgent and militia leaders, all of which mattered as much if not more than the increase in U.S. troops. And the decline in violence isn't necessarily permanent. Iraq watchers warn that communal distrust remains high; if someone strikes a match, civil war could again rage out of control.

Massey Hall, located at 178 Victoria Street, downtown Toronto, was built in 1894 by architect Sidney Badgley and financed by Hart Massey of Massey-Harris (later Massey Ferguson, then Varity Corporation). In 1933, the Massey Foundation undertook the further renovations to the hall. It is currently used for a variety of events and is operated by the same corporation as Roy Thomson Hall. The concert hall's debut concert was on June 14, 1894.
Massey Hall was the site of the legendary Charlie Parker-Dizzy Gillespie concert recorded as Jazz at Massey Hall in May 1953. Accompanying Gillespie and Parker in this acoustically sound hall were Bud Powell, Max Roach and Charles Mingus.

ProfWombat,
Elliot Fisk's is my very favorite guitar version of the Chaconne. On violin I still like the Hillary Hahn recording she made when she was a teenager.
I do not know how many recordings I have of it.
It is a veritable compendium of technique for the violin, and guitar as well, oddly. I play sections of it almosy daily as "etudes." I may never be able to pull off a complete and satisfying reading of it myself.
Yes, I went to school with Fleming, but she is a virtuoso, and I am a nurse.

TerryC: don't even have to do that. Divert all the resources now going into redundant specialty procedures and move them to primary care. Limit residencies in specialties. Forgive medical students' debt for service in needed specialties in underserved areas. Single payer, single form, single riskpool, to wit, everyone in the goddamned country. Mandate best practices and evidence based medicine. Attack medical error with the vigor the airlines and the navy deal with error. Eliminate for-profit hospitals, surgical centers, specialty clinics, imaging units. Provide insurance, such as Medicare, with its 5% overhead, rather than relying on private for-profit insurance, with its 30% overhead.
And that, m'dear, is just on my first day in office, after I, as commander in chief, close Guantanamo--not just the prison, the whole base--revoke the gag rule, and call Stevens, Ginzburg and Souter and tell them that I'll appoint Akhil Reed Ahmar, Erwin Chermerinsky and Lawrence Tribe to their seats.
Then, I'd go to sleep; enough loafing. Israel and Palestine await...

looks like Cheney's little adventure in Georgia is starting to receive blowback:
BISHKEK, (AFP) - - Kyrgystan will order the closure of a US military airbase used to support operations in Afghanistan "in a matter of days" under pressure from Russia, a senior Kyrgyz official told AFP.
"The presidential decree on the annulment of the agreement with the United States is already prepared. In a matter of days it will be published in the Kyrgyz media," the official told AFP, speaking on condition of anonymity.
The official said Russia had urged Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiyev to announce the closure of the base in exchange for financial help to the cash-strapped Central Asian nation.

I think I saw you in an ice-cream parlour, drinking milk shakes cold and long
Smiling and waving and looking so fine, dont think
You knew you were in this song
the version of this song he did on xm's "loft session" in 2005, solo with electric guitar, has to be heard to be believed.

Who could have predicted that Russia, which is rather closer to Georgia than we, might take umbrage at our posturing on Georgia/Ossetia, and brush us off, to the delight of the home folk and at little, if any, risk, given their importance as Europe's energy supplier?
Y'know, I can come up with this in minutes, and all I do is read the papers...

Sometimes people give up. Maybe they're hospital patients and they're sick as hell. Maybe they're exhausted family members. Or overworked residents.
But nurses never give up.
They don't have time to.

You are a good person to ask about socks. My qigong teacher has different size ankles. Can I make the socks based on the average ankle width or will one fall off?

Good pm/am.

Prof, you remind me that if we could just convince a very militaristic and nationalistic populace that healthcare - and it's practitioners - are every bit as important as the us military, and show people how we can apply the very same patriotic impulse to healthcare, that we apply to any other service.
Just as soldiers have a higher calling other than personal enrichment, so too can our health system mirror the same level of national commitment.
And you've got my vote for POTUS anyday.
if they are very, very different sizes, you may have to modify the number of stitches around the ankle. I would worry more about making them too tight if one of the ankles is larger due to an injury or swelling - you don't want to impede the circulation. If they aren't more than an inch or so different, I wouldn't worry about it too much.
