Once again:
The remains of Animal Control Solution owner Julio Diaz were found below a bridge near the town of Barceloneta after Diaz was reportedly seized and dragged off by residents of housing projects in the town.
Howver, town officials remain unconvinced that the residents are the ones responsible for Diaz's fate.
"We have never thrown Diaz off any place," residents said. "They can't prove that we were the ones who put him there."
The coroner has not yet determined whether the death was caused by a fall from the bridge, or whether Diaz was sleeping under the bridge when attacked by animals. Although lime had been sprinkled over Diaz to reduce his smell, the corpse appeared to have been partially devoured by various animals, including dogs and cats.

"I think there is too much concentration of power in the White House. Everybody has doubts about the full independence of the judiciary. There are clearly questions about the independence of the electronic media and there are, I think, questions about the strength of the Congress," said Rice, referring to the spineless gimps in the Democratic "leadership".

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has pledged support for human rights activists in Moscow, during a Russian visit that has been coolly received.
Ms Rice said she wanted to hear from local activists about the state of human rights and democracy in Russia.
She emphasised, however, that she had no wish to interfere in Russia's internal affairs.
The US has accused President Vladimir Putin of rolling back democracy and trampling rights, charges he denies.
One of the activists who met Ms Rice told the BBC she wanted the United States to condemn what she called the Kremlin's stifling of democratic society.
uh surely offering support for the activists count as interfering in Russia's affairs?

Maybe it's without irony because it is 100% clear that Putin and gang will remain the de facto leader of Russia, regardless of any pesky elections or transfer of "power".
Bush and gang are already waning, and will be out of power in 16 months. Likely it will be a democrat in the white house, which is obviously good. It could be much better and we still have a lot to complain about, but don't make it as if we have things as bad as Russia.

Mencken's not the only one who's thought that.
George S. Kaufman only made one movie, but it's a lost comedy classic about a politician who's just as dumb as Bush.
The Russian President has stepped up pressure on the Bush administration to freeze plans for an anti-missile defence shield to be located in Europe, by threatening to pull out of a Cold War-era nuclear treaty and warning that the US determination to press ahead risked harming relations with Moscow.
With the US Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, and the US Defence Secretary, Robert Gates, sitting opposite him during a meeting at his dacha at the start of two days of US-Russia negotiations, President Vladimir Putin surprised his guests by embarking on a spirited monologue in which he said, somewhat cryptically: "We may decide some day to put missile defence systems on the moon but, before we get to that, we may lose a chance for agreement because of you implementing your own plans."
He also warned that Moscow might pull out of the 1987 Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty, which bars the US and Russia from deploying medium-range nuclear missiles, unless the pact is expanded to cover other countries. He did not mention other states by name, but his spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, later said Moscow had in mind India and Pakistan which are "closer to our borders than to the US".
uh surely offering support for the activists count as interfering in Russia's affairs?
That's no more interference than, say...occupying a sovereign nation.

I just read this to my husband, and he was speechless.
The United States government under George W. Bush has amassed so much central authority that the power-grab may undermine Washington's commitment to democracy, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Saturday.
"In any country, if you don't have countervailing institutions, the power of any one president is problematic for democratic development," Lavrov told reporters after meeting with human-rights activists.
"I think there is too much concentration of power in the White House. I have told the Americans that. Everybody has doubts about the full independence of the judiciary. There are clearly questions about the independence of the electronic media and there are, I think, questions about the strength of Capital Hill," said Lavrov, referring to the American congress.
The notion that Obama has secret Muslim roots faded from the mainstream media, and even from most conservative blogs and magazines.
But rather than vanish, the whispered smear campaign appears to have gone underground, and in its purest form: Obama himself, according to a pair of widely circulated anonymous e-mails, is a Muslim.
...
“I had a lot of readers ask me about Barack Obama and his background, and a lot of them had heard he was a Muslim or thought he was a Muslim,” Schlussel said. “I looked into it, I found out his middle name was Hussein.” http://www.politico.com/news/sto.../1007/
6314.html
The nyts says it won't go away then links to the republican funded politico. politico points to an email chain letters and says thats gonna people's first impression of the candidate. schlussel dig into obama's background and comes up with his middle name [Now that’s some quality detective work].
Does it get dumber than that? [Yes it does but only if a Clinton is involved.]

We just got a reply from Tim Walberg about the SCHIP legislation. He claims that this version of the bill changes the current law to make it easier for immigrants to receive SCHIP money, increases taxes on the poor, pushes approximately 2.4 miilion children on private insurance into government-controlled insurance, covers childless adults, and requires an additional 22 million more smokers to fully finance the program. Furthermore, a child qualifies for SCHIP in New York in households that make up to $83,000 per year. That is just not fair to Michiganders where the income level is less than half of that.
He also was one of the repubs to go after the Dems for that immunization nonsense.
"In any country, if you don't have countervailing institutions, the power of any one president is problematic for democratic development," Rice told reporters after meeting with human-rights activists."

I found this editorial, which we will be citing when we email Walberg about his *facts*. Includes this interesting detail about illegl immigrants:
But a more blatant distortion comes from James Ogonowski, the Republican candidate for the 5th District Congressional seat in an Oct. 16 special election. "What bothers me the most is the benefits SCHIP gives to illegal immigrants," he wrote in an oped column in the Lawrence Eagle-Tribune.
Ogonowski claims to like SCHIP and has delayed saying whether he would support an override of Bush's veto - an important question, since the replacement for former Rep. Martin Meehan may be in Congress by the time an override comes up for a House vote.
But he ought to read the bill before he votes on it, including this part: "SEC. 605. NO FEDERAL FUNDING FOR ILLEGAL ALIENS. Nothing in this Act allows Federal payment for individuals who are not legal residents."

Mr. Bush could and should be an active and productive participant in the debate to follow. This is the stuff of legacy: He has the chance to transcend any talk of besting or being bested by Mr. Gore if he helps put in place concrete solutions to the problems so dramatically outlined in "An Inconvenient Truth." If the president continues to sit on the sidelines, not only the Nobel committee but history as well will judge him poorly.

long story short ... man I got mine and I went snow blind ... thousands of younger relatives havin' a hey ho time watchin their mothers and fathers go in there and get shitfaced and pay to play endless games of chance that were decidedly slanted (as in toward the abyss) to losin losin losin ... and the whole time the theme was christianity and a sense of brotherhood that was impenatratable. Thank you so much for your letter encouraging me to seek the presidency in 2008. I appreciate your kind words and I am very grateful for your continued support.
While I do not have any plans to be a candidate gain, I intend to remain very active in fighting for the causes we believe in and working to ensure that the Democratic Party becomes a more effective voice for the values that you and I hold dear. I hope that you will join me in continuing to promote the vision we share for our country.

I've been thinking about the "Gore paradox" a lot lately.
Here's a guy who was literally bred for public service, who "lost" a heartbreaking bid for the presidency; who overcame that disappointment to become the energizing force behind the fight against environmental disaster, and emerged as a much stronger public figure; who now has a groundswell of mainstream support to make another run at the presidency; and who has, thus far, steadfastly refused to answer the call.
I know you can't force someone to be your president, but this doesn't make much sense: Does Al honestly believe think he can accomplish more as an activist than as president?

I can understand how Gore would believe that he can accomplish more as an activist than as the head of the military industrial complex. I admire Gore as an activist, and I do not much care for him in government. As an activist he can roughly ignore everything the media say about him. Sens. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) — [does this make him an Icon?] — and John Warner (R-Va.) unveiled their long-awaited climate plan. It looks pretty good to me because
It is bipartisan — indeed, it follows the strategy recommended by moderate senators like Mary Landrieu (D-La.), Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), Blanche Lincoln (D-Ark.)
It starts quickly — by 2012 we must return to 2005 levels.
It has a credible 2050 target — and requires regular reports from the National Academy of Sciences on the “extent to which the emissions reductions achieved under the Act no, together with actual steps taken by other nations, stabilize atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations at a level adequate to forestall catastrophic impacts of climate change.”
It does not have a safety valve, but instead has banking and borrowing.
This plan will be the starting point for legislation from Sen. Boxer (D-CA). Here is a detailed summary from Greenwire (subs. req’d)

Two weeks ago, I treated myself to a refurbished laptop from e-bay. Got it for about $250. Everything loaded on there. Works real nice. BUT can't get on the Internet, which is what I bought the fucking thing for.

Okay, I bought one (Belkin) from e-bay Thursday night. Got it today.

Is Debbie S the one who demands total obediance to one's religious strictures? Like, thou shalt not lie?
The first clear appearance of the theme on the Web came in a Dec. 18, 2006, column by Debbie Schlussel, a Detroit-based writer who often alleges ties between mainstream American figures — most recently, former Sen. Fred Thompson — and Islamic radicalism.
“I had a lot of readers ask me about Barack Obama and his background, and a lot of them had heard he was a Muslim or thought he was a Muslim,” Schlussel said. “I looked into it, I found out his middle name was Hussein.”
The result: a column titled “Barack Hussein Obama: Once a Muslim, Always a Muslim.”
Schlussel’s theme was picked up in the Unification Church-owned online magazine Insight the next month, which reported, with no named sources but a political twist, that Hillary Rodham Clinton’s campaign was pushing a story about Obama’s Muslim heritage.
“Are the American people ready for an elected president who was educated in a madrassa as a young boy and has not been forthcoming about his Muslim heritage?” Insight asked Jan. 17.
The story jumped to Fox and then faded from public view in the face of Obama’s angry response.
It partly died because it was debunked but also because many mainstream conservatives refused to pay it much heed. [Bcz they were saving it for the general election?]
Dems told republicans to stop picking their scabs ofrrisk infection knowing they couldn't help themselves
Republicans continued to itch and scratch and remove the scale and beat their chest that they were healing. To most they'd never ben wounded to begin with.

FReeper runs down Hillary's scandals:
To what scandals could the article be referring?
Surely the opposition won't drudge up that old tale of Hillary sharing her sleeping quarters with another woman?
Surely they wouln't accuse Hillary of being responsible for the shameful bombing of Yugoslavia?
They wouldn't want to know what role Craig Livingstone played in the White House and who hired him, would they?
They wouldn't want to know who killed Vince Foster, or why nearly 60 people have been either outright murdered or died under mysterious circumstances when their only common thread was that they had the goods on the Clintons, would they?
Would they want to know why Albright was allowed to hand over the missile guidance secrets to the Chinese Communists?
Would they want to know why the Communist Chinese purchased the Worthen Bank in Little Rock?
Would they want to know why Hillary wouldn't allow eye contact with staffers in the White House walls?
Would they want to know why she abetted her animal husband's raping and fondling innocent women?
Would anyone ask if the old USSR had anything to do with joining these two marxist hillbillys and giving them a mission?
Would anyone ask HRH if she's ever paid for anything in her shoddy life?
Would anyone ask who instructed Sandy Berger to steal classified documents that would prove the Clintons' actions were mainly responsible for the 9/11 terrorist attack?
You forgot the thick ankles part.

At the time, the MCM* was in full-throated roar that no one dare upset the Merkin electorate--it had been so traumatic that the election was close, it was verboten to speak ill of the Supreme Five's ill-advised and possibly unconstitutional decision.
Remember, this was the MCM which refused to show images of protesters along the inaugurual parade route.
This wss the MCM which essentially lied to the American people.
The Dems knew it was a losing proposition to fight the ceremonial vote in the Senate.
I do not excuse them, but the Democratic Party would have been branded many terrible things by the reThugs and the MCM. They decided to live to fight another day.

Nacchio's account, which places the NSA proposal at a meeting on Feb. 27, 2001, suggests that the Bush administration was seeking to enlist telecommunications firms in programs without court oversight before the terrorist attacks on New York and the Pentagon. The Sept. 11 attacks have been cited by the government as the main impetus for its warrantless surveillance efforts.

I have never understood the idea that we need to panic in times of crisis. I used to be on a volunteer rescue squad. When there was a major event, some volunteers basically threw up their hands and began screaming. We officers had to say, "You need to wear protective gear, you need to do triage.., etc" We lost a volunteer because she went helter skelter into a burning building without any gear, any backup and any thought. So when our country is in crisis, what do we do? We abandon constitutional norms and have John Bolton pounding on county clerk doors in Florida. It is worth pointing out that crisis is the Greek word for decision. It does not have to demand panic, fear and the loss of laws and regulation. It can at best allow for correct and decent thinking. But this administration has turned any crisis into a clusterfuck. Can you imagine being in an accident and having Bush and Cheney pull up in the fire truck?

CA: Gov. Schwarzenegger Vetoes Gay Marriage Bill Again
By STEVE LAWRENCE
Associated Press Writer
SACRAMENTO—Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Friday carried out his promise to continue to veto gay marriage bills.
The Republican governor turned down a measure by Assemblyman Mark Leno, D-San Francisco, that would have lifted the state's ban on same-sex marriages by defining marriage as a union between two persons, not just a man and a woman.
Schwarzenegger vetoed a similar Leno bill in 2005.
The governor announced in February that he would veto this year's version if it reached his desk and said last month that he would keep turning down such bills as long as lawmakers kept sending them to him.
"It would be wrong for the people to vote for something and for me to then overturn it," Schwarzenegger said in September, referring to voters' approval of Proposition 22 in 2000. "So they can send this bill down as many times as they want, I won't do it."
Proposition 22 was intended to prevent California from recognizing gay marriages performed in other states or countries.

David Cameron has rounded off his best week as Tory leader by claiming Hollywood support for his policies on the environment, gun crime and the family.
On a three-day tour of the United States, a buoyant Mr Cameron met Arnold Schwarzenegger, the Governor of California, to discuss how they could jointly forge solutions to the problems facing society.
After the get-together with the former film actor turned Republican politician, Mr Cameron said he was confident they could work together to develop an agenda that would show centre-Right politicians were most in tune with the needs of voters.
Mr Cameron said: "The interesting thing is we're both centre-Right politicians looking at broadening the appeal of our party.
"We're talking about ways we might hook up in the future, but I can't be more specific than that.
voter: uh no .. jut decided for right now with things so uncertain in the world it wouldn't be fair to subject even an embryo to the kind of stress I experience on a daily basis minute by minute and hour by hour.
DeVos: Well if you vote republican you can have as many kids as you want ... we'll even hire the chemically birth defected ones for presidential posts and stress related hereditary malfunctioning for national security positions. They tend to make the best prison guards and we're planning to expand the Dept of Corrections in michigan when we finally steal... er I mean win election.

Washington has angered Canada's airlines with a proposal to order them to hand over personal information about passengers who take flights that go south over U.S. airspace en route to sunny destinations.
Although the planes wouldn't take off from or land on U.S. soil, the Department of Homeland Security is proposing Canadian carriers send passenger manifests up to 72 hours in advance of departures to popular winter escapes such as Mexico and the Caribbean.
Under the U.S. Secure Flight program, the requirement to transmit data would also apply to northbound return flights from holiday destinations.
So, what's Canada going to do about this?

An end to a long-running dispute that has disrupted Britain's postal services was in sight last night, after negotiators from Royal Mail and the Communication Workers Union (CWU) reached agreement over pay, pensions and working practices.
The terms, which have not yet been made public, will need to be approved by the union's postal executive.
Last night the two sides issued a joint statement signed by Royal Mail's chief executive, Adam Crozier, the CWU's general secretary, Billy Hayes, his deputy Dave Ward, and Brendan Barber, the general secretary of the TUC, which has brokered the talks.
what with the German train drives striking and the unions slowly moving out of their post Thatcherite malaise, the European ruling class has had quite a bit of a headache I'd say

My students had an assignment to write a letter of advice to someone.
C-SPAN interview with the Washington Post’s Glenn Kessler. Kessler was discussing U.S. - Soviet relations, and the difficulties they present putative Russia expert Condoleezza Rice, when he let fly with this little gem about Bush and Putin:
[A]t his very first meeting with Putin, Putin told [Bush] a story about a cross that he had blessed in Israel that used to belong to his grandmother. People that are aware of this conversation at the State Department feel that the President got played by Putin. There is no cross. There was just some KGB story that he made up. But it had a real impact on President Bush. That’s when he walked out and said, ‘I looked into his soul and decided this is the guy I can work with.’ And for the longest time in the first term, if you talked to then National Security Adviser Rice, she always painted the relationship with Russia in very rosy terms. …”

The BBC has been was inundated with complaints after Kelvin MacKenzie, the former editor of The Sun, made disparaging comments about Scottish people on Question Time.
MacKenzie, who is notorious for his forthright opinions, provoked outrage after he claimed that the Scots lacked entrepreneurial skills and enjoyed spending but not making money.
He was shouted down and booed by the studio audience as he attacked Gordon Brown for being "a socialist Scot who wants to spend every single penny you earn. Never forget that."
Challenged by another panellist, Chuka Umunna of the think tank Compass, Mr MacKenzie went on: "Scotland believes not in entrepreneurialism like in London and the South East.
"He [Brown] could not find anybody who could carry his bag better than another Scot, so he grabbed Darling [The Chancellor] from wherever he was.
"The reality is that the Scots enjoy spending it, they do not enjoy creating it, which is the opposite of down in the South."
From what I have heard, she neither sucks nor bangs.

Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has urged Muslim countries to boycott a planned US-sponsored Middle East peace conference next month.
He said the aim of the meeting was to bolster Israel's position at the expense of the Palestinians.
The Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, hopes it will kick-start substantive talks with Israel on the creation of a Palestinian state.
But the Hamas movement, which controls the Gaza Strip, opposes the conference.

You know, I do come by it honestly. Mrs DWD and I took Youngest DWD out for lunch (the only time you get to talk to college kids these days) I told them that everyone on the blog was mad at me because I said that Hillary was the choice of the Republicans to run and that she would never be elected. Both Mrs DWD (the non-political one) and Youngest DWD (the prescient one) said, "Why? That is the truth. No one is going to vote for her." (And I swear I never discussed this with them: they find politics BORING)
So, I remain persona non grata.

BAGHDAD - Iraq's Shiite-dominated government said the killings of 15 women and children in a U.S. attack on a Sunni area were a "sorrowful matter," but emphasized yesterday that civilian deaths are unavoidable in the fight against al Qaeda in Iraq.
The comments by government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh appeared to be tacit approval of Thursday's raid northwest of Baghdad. They suggested the Iraqi government holds the American military to a different standard when it comes to assaults against suspected Sunni insurgents.
Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's government has complained loudly to U.S. military officials when Shiite civilians have been killed in American attacks against Mahdi Army militants, and tensions have been high over recent shootings of Iraqi civilians by private security contractors.
"We are in a war against those diabolical and wicked groups; therefore during military operations there might be innocents killed," he added. "The victims are an unavoidable matter in fighting al Qaeda," al-Dabbagh said.
First NToddcast I heard was on 2/17/06, with a lovely version of Cry Me A River.

However, he just ran the "dickless" routine from Ghostbusters, which is my all time favorite, so I have nothing but praise for this latest effort...
I loved that sequence.
They always edit that if Ghostbusters plays on cable.
It was one of the funniest moments in the film when I saw it in the theatre.

That is frustrating. I find that sometimes the sequence in turning on devices is important. At least here, one has to turn on the modem, then the wireless router, then the computer. Windows is especially stupid if things are not in order when it boots.

Would you believe we tried all that?
I might have just gotten a defective router.
It happens.

GENEVA 2007 (Reuters) - The World Health Organisation (WHO) said on Friday it had asked Iraqi authorities to probe media reports of several cases of Rift Valley Fever in animals.
The viral disease primarily affects animals but can infect humans through handling of blood or organs of infected animals, leading to high rates of disease and death, according to the United Nations health agency.
Herders, farmers, slaughterhouse workers and veterinarians are deemed at higher risk through handling of animal tissue during slaughtering, assisting with animal births, conducting veterinary procedures or disposing of carcasses.
"We are aware of media reports and have put in a formal request for verification to Iraq," WHO spokesman Gregory Hartl said in Geneva

She just wanted to say something to get her name mentioned by Keith...and Jon...and probably even Stephen.
