Adding to the problems in the state of Florida (and I'm sure the same is going to be true in other states that have had big spec bubbles in RE), the state is trying to reform property taxes at a time when property tax revenues are going down, due to the deflation of said bubble.
Additionally, in some areas where growth was really fast for several years, local officials made projections for projects based on those accelerated growth numbers. Now that growth has slowed to more normal numbers, we've got schools with no students in some areas, because the population grown didn't keep up the way people expected it to.

A number of Christians have come to believe, because of recent prophecies, dreams, and visions, that I-35 is the highway spoken in Isaiah 35, verse 8: “And a highway will be there, it will be called the way of holiness.”
… [Heartland Ministries’ Hill] believes God has an awesome plan that starts along I-35. “Let’s draw a line in the center of America, set people on fire, get young people saved, get moms and dads saved, get churches on fire, get holy, and watch how it affects the rest of America.”
“What do we expect to see?” [said Cindy Jacob.] “We expect laws to be changed in cities. We expect righteous leaders. We expect a movement, a reformation that will literally sweep the face of the earth.”
I have honest work. I start Monday.

Democrats Corrupt Debate Process [David Freddoso]
Look, we can blame CNN all we want. But there's more to the sad fact that Democratic campaign and Party plants asked 11 of the questions in the last two debates, as though they were mere "undecided, concerned voters" from the "real world."
CNN deserves much blame for it, but I doubt they actually colluded in letting this happen. They should have reacted, however, by castigating the Democrats for corrupting the process. Isn't that what's really going on here? Isn't this what Hillary's campaign also does by planting questioners at each campaign stop? They're creating Potemkin villages of political opinion everywhere they go, and showing them off to the television cameras.
Hey Dems: Just stop it already, will you? You're ruining the democratic process for everyone, making us all even more cynical about public service and politics.
So give back the two presidential elections you stole.

Ron Paul is the only person to say anything true during the republican debates (except when Mccain explained torture is torture). I don't care if he hears voices.
Dennis said that he would not appoint anyone to the supreme court who was not supportive of Roe-v-Wade and the larger right to privacy.
Both of them are taking moral and clear stands against the invasion and occupation of Iraq and face intense media derision for that reason (note that Hucksterbee can call for getting rid of the IRS without so much as a giggle). It's sad to see how many people buy into the media framing.
Haha haha, the weird looking guy said we should impeach Cheney and that anti-un nutbar said we were attacked on 9/11 because we have soldiers all over the middle-east for no good reason. Very funny.

For anyone interested in how trolls so readily get around getting banned I recently ran across this article ... http://www.googobits.com/article...acy-
online.html
Anonymous surfing allows you to surf the internet while not allowing any computer to access the information on your computer. They are not aware of your IP address or any other information about you whenever your computer connects with their server.
The way this is done is through a proxy server. Essentially what you are doing is informing the proxy server of what sites that you want to go to. The proxy server then connects to the web site for you, and loads it up onto its own server. You never leave the proxy server, but are able to view web sites from any server in the world through a proxy. That means that the only computer which could possibly get your information is the actual proxy server that you are using, because you are in no direct contact with any other server.
Proxy servers generally work in one of two ways. The first way involves you actually logging onto a special proxy server web site, where you will then be allowed to open up other web sites through the proxy.
The second method of using a proxy server is to program it into your internet browser. For example, if you go to the preferences folder in Netscape Navigator, then look under connections, you will see an option for using a proxy server. You type in the address of the proxy server and the port, and then every time you use that browser you will automatically be sent through the proxy.
There are many free proxy servers out there, as well as paid programs to allow you to surf anonymously. Any proxy server is going to function in essentially the same way, the major difference between servers will be speed when deciding which proxy server that you prefer.

I come from the state that gave us all Jesse Ventura, and then threw him back into the garbage heap he came from.
But I remember the day he was elected--no one could believe it. So I think we discount Ron Paul at our peril.
I was 10 in 1964. My parents used to take the family to Oakland to the SNCC office where we all stuffed envelopes for their efforts in the South at least once a week.
So I grew up believing that government could do good. And until Bush, I believed that the good it does outweighs the bad.
Now, I don't know.
So that's why I'm not totally dismissing Ron Paul.

Hillary was a Goldwater girl approximately 40 years ago. I can forgive her youthful indiscretion. Kucinich remained anti-choice right up till he wanted to run for the presidency. There is a sharp difference.

I should add that this isn't all that uncommon among vegans...I've known several who are troubled by certain things about abortion. Most people grow out of it, and I don't believe any of 'em would've voted against choice. But then, Kucinich had the Catholicism thing going on as well.

JUDY WOODRUFF: Four years ago, you changed your position, is that right, on abortion?
REP. DENNIS KUCINICH: Well, you know what? It was long before I ran for president the first time that I came to an understanding of how this issue was tearing America apart and how it's possible to simultaneously stand for a woman's right to choose and, at the same time, work to make abortions less likely. I think it's possible to do both.
We're called upon, those of us who run for president, to have a kind of wisdom which comes from understanding what people go through, not that I'm smarter than anyone else, but I understand the kind of difficulties that people have, how complicated life can be for people.
So when you come with the intention of not rejecting the teachings of the church, but of trying to create a society where the concerns of the church are given full effect and, at the same time, make sure that women have this right to choose so that they can -- and create a society where women can choose what is best not only for themselves, but for the society, as well.
but steve, how do you know he will be a firmly pro-choice president, then? if it's just pandering, why should he be?

NARAL did not endorse Kucinich for President, but he does have a 100% Pro-choice voting record in congress under their rating scheme.
Ice and snow sculptures are the quintessential attractions of the St. Paul Winter Carnival, but they're a drain on festival coffers.
Lacking the kind of corporate cash needed to pay for the sculpting competitions, festival organizers are turning to you for help.
The massive ice blocks used to build the carvings in Rice Park go on sale today. At $122 apiece, they may be the most expensive chunks of ice you'll ever come across.
The producers of the 122nd Winter Carnival are hoping you - or your Lions Club, your Boy Scout troop or your business - will buy a 300-pound block to save a time-honored tradition. They're calling the concept "stock in a block."
"It gives the opportunity for the community as a whole to buy a piece of the carnival and keep strong the real draws of the carnival, which are snow and ice," said Kathy Bjerke, board chairwoman of the St. Paul Festival and Heritage Foundation.
Sponsoring a block of ice? Lame.

Then, just three days later, frontrunning presidential candidate Hillary Clinton singled out Colin Powell as one of the personal emissaries she would send out to tell the world that "bipartisan foreign policy is back."
But as these incidents display so nakedly, "bipartisan foreign policy" has never gone away. It has continued to operate smoothly at the highest levels throughout the Bush imperium, greased by the blood money flowing to both parties from the spoils of war (H. Clinton now receives more legalized bribery from military-related industries than any of the Republican candidates), and by their shared vision of armed American hegemony over world affairs. (The latter is well-limned by Arthur Silber here.)

It was a demand. You demand to somehow find the one thing that will convince you DK is pro-choice. It's weird when he's said and done everything he should as a pro-choicer in the last several years and is still consistent in all his other life-affirming positions.

And IIRC they changed the number on Route 666 through the Navajo reservation.
I thought the story was the fundies (them again) were all atwitter over that route number due to its mythological implications and insisted it be changed.
Of course, there is also the issue of the decommisioning of US 66 when most of its footprint was paved over with Interstates.

Then, just three days later, frontrunning presidential candidate Hillary Clinton singled out Colin Powell as one of the personal emissaries she would send out to tell the world that "bipartisan foreign policy is back."
The one thing I always give HRC credit for is smarts, which is why this just shocked me. It's arguably the most Beltway-insular thing any candidate on either side has said in this cycle. I think the only people who have an opinion of Powell anymore, outside the Village, is (more or less) disdain, on the right and the left.

I said it, and it's correct in essence - through your misrepresentation. 1/3 of republican women voters label themselves as pro-choice yet they routinely vote for anti-choice candidates.
Anyone who thinks that all women voters will automatically prize Hillary's stronger pro-choice record over, a candidate who futzes the issue and gives them some hope on economics and/or war is just wrong.

I would offer up Lincoln Chaffee and, outside of electoral/player politics, Stephen Chapman and Paul Craig Roberts. Hagel talks a good game but almost never backs it up with a vote.
My main problems with (post-retirement) Powell are that he wanted to stay on for the second term (arrogant enough to think he could clean up the mess or just liked the title) and he mostly expresses his regret by mild or non-denial denials of what Larry Wilkerson (or someone similar) said.

Acrobats, Fire Dancers Fuel Circus Craze
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The DNA Lounge was a real circus the night The Mutaytor came to town. The band looked like a bunch of clowns. Young contortionists folded their limbs like fortune cookies above and around the stage.
There were no complaints from the 500 or so cognoscenti who paid $20 each to watch acrobats and aerialists on ropes perform to a live percussive beat.
Once a month, the techno dance club hosts the Bohemian Carnival, an informal gathering of troupes from the Bay Area's underground circus scene and a bellwether of a subculture trend taking hold in a city near you.
"People are ready to be entertained on a much more visceral and darker level. There is this hunger to see something fancier," said Mutaytor front man Buck Down, explaining why the group made clown costumes, fire spinners and jugglers part of its trance music act. "It pushes a button, and it's a very primal button."

I'm sure I'm not the only one that finds it ironic that that "the party of life" supports such futile efforts as war, killing people via penal code, marginalizing an entire sex.

Speaking of racism, I've got to whore this post about John Derbyshire again:
I'd add in that the vast majority of 'pro-life' Republicans, the men especially, don't give a fiddler's fuck about abortion one way the other. And even many of those that aren't completely cynical about it see it through a Victorian lens of controlling the plebs. If it's their wife/daughter/mistress/son's girlfriend who has an unwanted pregnancy, they'll find an ob/gyn to perform a "therapeutic miscarriage".

When S Dak passed that crazily anti-choice law a few years back, I remember an interview with a guy in his late twenties who was for it, because he was convinced that the reason he and his wife couldn't conceive was God's wrath for the two occasions when he had knocked up his girlfriends and paid for teh abortions.
And the phrase "therapeutic abortion" was coined (AFAIK) by Susan Carpenter MacMillan to describe her second abortion, when she was married, rich and in her early forties, and a 'prominent pro-life activist', before she met Paula Jones.

The beauty of the "over-turn roe-v-wade" program is that it can be understood purely in terms of punishing people you don't like. JC Flowers, the US private equity firm, made a last-ditch bid yesterday to wreck Sir Richard Branson's takeover of Northern Rock after it signalled possible increased payouts for shareholders as part of a revised offer.
The move is likely to heighten tensions between the three main bidders for the bank and the Treasury, which is thought to be keen on a quick sale to close the door on the politically and financially embarrassing episode.
Sources close to Flowers said attempts to sit down with Treasury officials this week had proved fruitless, despite promises from the government that all takeover proposals would be examined.
The Treasury denied last night that it was reluctant to engage in talks with the Flowers team. "We stand ready to have discussions with any bidder that meets the principles we set out," it said.

Do the right-to-lifers really think abortion originated with Roe v. Wade or that it will end with a repeal?
Pre-Roe, when a woman of childbearing age came to the ER complaining of abdominal pain, a botched abortion had to be ruled out as a matter of course. Some women died and a lot more were sterile for life. The major effect of Roe has been a reduction in pain and suffering for omen. Oh, and better statistics. I really don't believe the rate of abortions has increased by very much.

They used to run this commercial where they had all these women who had had abortions and "regretted" them.
