Could you even have gotten from Philly to SF and back by train? I'm assuming all the mess-ups were due to our wonderfully-deregulated airplane system?

Off the top of my head, SF to Chicago, and then onto Philadelphia.

GravatarCrab & beer at Duncan's! I can be there half an hour if I don't stop off to play disc golf.

GravatarHecate!

So on the night of January 1st I had a dream about a very pleasant witch. I was sitting next to her in a library/coffee show bench. I got sleepy. I laid down on the bench. She bent over me and with a small hand turned mixer put it in my open mouth and while turning the mixer she recited some sort of incantation. I was confused because I couldn't make out the words, but I wasn't scared. My over all experiences with the witch during our earlier conversation was pleasant.

Of course when I woke up I thought of you. I know you don't do dream analysis, but I just thought that I should tell you since you do those night time poems that I love and hey, it was a interesting witch dream.

First dream of the new year.

GravatarHecate, I think he was fogged in at SF

GravatarDiane took the train from L.A. to Albuquerque, that's a good ride. And I've gone from Dallas to D.C., but there's a long layover in Chicago.

We need a high speed train with only a couple of stops, to get Coast to Coast.

GravatarI have kitties.

And a Paxcast about Nixon's Quakerism.

GravatarOff the top of my head, SF to Chicago, and then onto Philadelphia.

Looked up the schedule: SF by bus (30 minutes) to the train, then to Chicago (53 hours), then to DC (17 hours) then to Phili.

GravatarUnion Station in Chicago is something else.

Of course, the scene from that one movie was shot there...

GravatarJust checked AMTRAK - 68.5 hours San Francisco to Philly.

GravatarWhat Israel is doing is immoral and probably stupid, but it's utterly shallow to argue that "the jews" should have learned from the experience of being butchered because they were unarmed and nonstrategic that butchery is bad.
rootless-e, stuntman | 01.03.09 - 2:37 pm | #

Not shallow at all. It was one musing in a large, overarching discussion that addressed the shortcomings of all sides, including Americans. What's shallow is to then declare that people who say such things are themselves bad for even daring speak the words.

There are lessons to learn from the Jewish and global response to Nazism. There are lessons to learn from the Jewish and global treatment of Palestinians. To focus on one remark is shallow and glib.

Gravatardamn i missed the economics thread.

When I worked in Chicago in the mid-80's I used to take the train into Union Station. Used to walk out those same stairs all the time.

Then onto PDX and a transfer to the Empire Builder and back to Chicago. Long, but fun. Much better than spending two weeks in school.

I don't think you are bad, I think you are glib. In fact, Hitler's goal of ridding Europe of a thriving and growing Jewish minority was achieved by extermination camps. The white settlers in the USA prospered by murdering indians and taking their land. There are still vast fortunes from the slave trade that give the inheritors lives of ease and power to this day. Rockefeller never paid a price for having miners machine gunned. Crime and worse pays. The reason that morality is difficult is that it often involves damaging your own self interest.

Of course, one might also ask what the 50% of Israeli Jews who are not of European extraction are supposed to have learned from the Warsaw Ghetto.

GravatarWelcome home, Atrios, and good afternoon, good people.

Given AMTRAK's current schedule, SF to Philly is a long trek. However, if mass transportation is to take hold, and if AMTRAK can shift to a more modern mode (such as non-diesel locomotives and high speed rail it doesn't have to share with freight trains), it should be possible to go coast to coast in no more than 48 hours.

And what a grand tour of this country it would be!

Ah yes, redefining things now. The Final Solution failed, as did the Thousand Year Reich overall. And it would've failed even more spectacularly if more people engaged in nonviolent resistance. But you go ahead and get all upset and defensive if people in a long discussion muse about a potential lesson learned from the carnage, about how reducing your enemy to barbarians, vermin, etc, only justifies your barbarity in your mind.

GravatarHeh.

When the 111th Congress convenes on Tuesday, Norm Coleman may be out of an office, even though his Senate race remains far from settled.

Coleman’s first term officially expires at noon on Saturday, and he is locked in one of the closest Senate races in history, with Democrat Al Franken clinging to a 49-vote lead out of nearly 3 million votes cast.

Since he has not been certified a winner in the race, Coleman may have to give up his privileges as a senator, including his desk on the floor, his personal office and his right to vote on legislation, according to Democratic aides familiar with the rules.

GravatarOf course, one might also ask what the 50% of Israeli Jews who are not of European extraction are supposed to have learned from the Warsaw Ghetto.

Indeed, they could not have learned a fucking thing from history, particularly one that is oft held up as the prime example of humanity's inhumanity to humanity.

I took the Empire Builder when I moved to Seattle in '81. It's great, if you've got three days to spend on a train (although my trip arrived twelve hours late), but it's not really practical transportation compared with air.

Amtrak had sale that ended the day before spring break began, but Mom and Dad thought that the trip would be more educational and three weeks out of school wouldn't be so bad.
Of course, this being the middle of march and going through the plains/midwest, there was a snow storm and we got rerouted. But we got rerouted through Clovis, NM, which is where Dad was stationed during the first years of their marriage. So that was cool.

GravatarLONDON (Reuters) - Thousands of chanting, banner-waving demonstrators marched in cities across Europe on Saturday to demand a halt to Israeli bombing in the Gaza Strip.

Protests were held in Britain, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Turkey as the Israeli offensive entered its second week, and before Israel confirmed ground forces had entered Gaza.

Israeli Arabs held a protest march and Kuwaitis also took to the streets, a day after bigger Middle East rallies.

In Paris, police said more than 20,000 demonstrators, many wearing Palestinian keffiyeh headscarves, marched through the city center chanting slogans such as "Israel murderer!" and waving banners demanding an end to the air attacks.

Is there something wrong with erradicating Hamas Terrorist Scum?

GravatarNTodd, seeing that pic of the Ellis Island log reminded me of the one our family's historian sent me.

My father came first, from Poland. He was an illegal, landing in Canada and then sneaking into the US through Detroit as a 15 year old. Five years later he brought his parents and siblings over legally, and it is their names that are registered.

Their courage and determination are quite a legacy, one that I'm not sure I've carried on, especially these last 8 years.

Gravatar

Angry protests against Israel's bombardment of the Gaza Strip have continued throughout the world, with two of the largest demonstrations taking place in London and in Sakhnin in northern Israel.

Other large demonstrations were staged in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, Srinagar in Indian-administered Kashmir, Lebanon, Turkey and the West Bank.

Protesters in Kabul pumped their fists into the air and shouted slogans against Israel and the United States, while in Srinagar activists burned an effigy of Ehud Olmert, Israel's outgoing prime minister.

In Ramallah in the West Bank, Palestinians seeking national unity marched through streets and there were clashes with Israeli riot police.

Elias, you have no posTition to defend.

You've reduced him to sarcasm.

Which is many levels of discourse above the sophomoric crap you post.

GravatarSince people aren't listening to the Paxcast, how about a quote from Howard Thurman:

The religion of Jesus says to the disinherited: "Love your enemy. Take the initiative in seeking ways by which you can have the experience of a common sharing of mutual worth and value. It may be hazardous, but you must do it."
...
What one discovers in even a single experience in which barriers have been removed may become useful in building an over-all technique for loving one's enemy. There cannot be too great insistence on the point that we are here dealing with a discipline, a method, a technique, as over against some form of wishful thinking or simply desiring.
...
A whole group may be regarded as an exception, and thus one is relieved of any necessity to regard them as human beings. A Negro may say: "If a man is white, he may be automatically classified as one incapable of dealing with me as if he were a rational human being." Or it may be just the reverse. Such a mood, the mood of exception, operates in all sorts of ways...The deadly consequences of this attitude are evident. On the same principle scapegoats are provided, upon whose helpless heads we pour our failures and our fears.

GravatarIs there something wrong with erradicating Hamas Terrorist Scum?

Thou must be anti-Semitic if one criticizes the Israeli _government_. This is undeniable.

Hate to break this to you, Elias, but this is an Intertubes rule, not an Eschaton Rule.

Atrios very rarely comments on Arab-Israeli issues.

However, if you want to see people screaming about anti-semitism if anyone dares to question the Israeli militants' policies, Glennzilla's place is a good place to start.

GravatarGO WARREN!

Gravatartoo many trolls this Saturday night

GravatarNo, we know it's a true Elias post when it's full of smug self-righteousness, or a sexual description that is creepy.

You are an original Elias.

GravatarWhat extraction are they? If you read the Turkish and British census data from pre-WWI and the Palestine Mandate, there were very few Jews in the area. IIRC only about 50,000 about the time of WWI and many of them had moved to Palestine around 1880.

The bottom line is that Israel is an international construct. It, at least, has the responsibility to listen to the world consensus in this case, which is to cease its murderous onslaught.

GravatarIf Obama comes in and starts kissing Israels butt like our past few presidents and doesn't demand that they quit being TERRORISTS, then it is official, we were lied to, there will be no CHANGE.

GravatarThere is no possibility that one could actually be so in favor of preserving the Israeli state as to criticize it for its self-destructive policies.
Elias

Actually, Elias, I fall into that camp. I want Israel to succeed as a nation, free from fear of extermination, but I want it to do so as a good citizen in the Middle East.

There is no doubt in my mind that both sides are currently being run by power-seeking assholes. The trick is going to be to get some power to the people most directly affected by this madness on both sides of the divide enough power to find a way to resolve what at this point look to be impossible questions, but are in fact not.

Jimmy Carter proved that.

GravatarThis is weird, but I agree with much what both rootless and Ntodd have both said. Oh well.

GravatarWhy doesn't Israel allow any reporter to go inside the Gaza?! Having war crimes captured on film is generally detrimental to the perpetrators.

GravatarWow, I sure mangled that last post, didn't I.

GravatarYou are an original Elias.
trifecta

Why, thank you very much, tri.

GravatarWhile we're cleansing things let's get rid of those $70 an hour UAW feather-bedders. Kill. Otherwise the laid-off vermin collect the $70 an hour just the same.

GravatarCulture of Truth is pretending to be above the fray, proving he is an ignorant antisemite who loves Israel.

GravatarWell, they don't call Israeli's the Masters of Deceit for nothin, doncha know.

The whole world has known it for centuries.

GravatarThis is weird, but I agree with much what both rootless and Ntodd have both said. Oh well.

I don't think it's weird at all, as I can agree. You can learn a lot here while lurking and not being invested in taking sides in the 'debate.'

GravatarOwls, bats, ongers.

GravatarYeah, and I have also learned to go grocery shopping earlier.

GravatarMorocco, Tunisia, Iraq, Iran, Yemen, Egypt and, of course, Ethiopia.

I did not know that many had come from there. My main area of study with Jewish immigration to the area dealt with the British efforts to control/stop it during the 1930s.

GravatarWow, I sure mangled that last post, didn't I.
Diane C. Barking-Mad

No, you're absolutely right.
Both sides are run by idiots.
But Israeli governments have consistently refused to give the Palestinians the chance to prove that they can be a viable state.
How in the world could anyone exist normally, with clear, objective thinking, when you're being forced to live in inhuman conditions?
The majority of the Palestinian people support a 2 state solution, but will refuse it as long as this apartheid is forced upon them.

GravatarThe point is lost on someone as igorant as you.

There's no point to anything you post.

GravatarEverybody's "Elias" now.

What's that Cali?

GravatarYou have too many cats. Please eliminate one.

PS I am not a crank

GravatarBring your shoe polish upstairs, folks.
