GravatarI blame brown people.

As Pat B. told Rachel last night: it's a white man's world, we just let brown people live in it because they made such good slaves/servants.

Maybe that was a mistake.

GravatarDave, my mother started out by joining a mother's group when I was
small.  They'd have coffee and talk.  She was a member of the ladies'
guild at her church. My da had taught her to play bridge while they
were courting, and pretty soon, she belonged to several bridge clubs.
She was very, very good at bridge and started on her way to becoming
nationally ranked.  By the time I was in HS she was playing 3 times a
week--social, duplicate, and tournament.  She began working part time
when my youngest brother was 2 and did advertising for a real estate
firm for the next 25 years.  She didn't slow down on the bridge circuit
till about five years ago; she noticed she wasn't as sharp as she used
to be.  She got a computer and she and her friends were all
electronically linked.  She had artistic talent and painted because it
was fun.  She loved her grandkids and saw them every chance she got.
She played in several scrabble leagues, ran a travel club for seniors,
traveled extensively, and made a damn good life for herself.  She was a
widow at 53 and she was not about to curl up in the fetal position and
fade away. She loved the theatre, the symphony, dining out with her friends. At her funeral, when I said goodbye, I told her, well done.

Uncle Pat: MSNBC’s Knowing Promotion of White Supremacy and Racial Hatred

So why is MSNBC promoting this? Yes, promoting. They're not just occasionally interviewing their dear "Uncle Pat" to find out what whacko extremists are saying; they're actively promoting him, every day, and night after night. And this is the same MSNBC that was condemning Reverend Wright for weeks, showing endless loops of video clips and urging their hosts and guests to characterize Wright's views as unacceptably anti-white.

MSNBC knows that Buchanan has engaged in such racist speech throughout his career. The producers of MSNBC's political news/commentary shows must be convinced that they can attract more viewers and sell more advertising if they feature an unabashed white supremacist as their featured "conservative" panelist. They don't care that this must be deeply offensive to huge numbers of Americans; those viewers apparently don't matter. We don't matter.

The opening of a foreign trade, by making them acquainted with new objects, or tempting them by the easier acquisition of things which they had not previously thought attainable, sometimes works a sort of industrial revolution in a country whose resources were previously undeveloped for want of energy and ambition in the people: inducing those who were satisfied with scanty comforts and little work, to work harder for the gratification of their new tastes, and even to save, and accumulate capital, for the still more complete satisfaction of those tastes at a future time.

GravatarNTodd --

I just skimmed the post you so obligingly linked to, and one point you made early on, before you went into specific issues, sticks with me:

that perhaps the biggest difference between conservatives/liberals, Republicans/Democrats, them/us, is empathy: the ability to internalize the feelings of someone you identify as "other," i.e., not of your family/tribe.

Perhaps that's why "empathy" became such a hot button word and issue these past few weeks -- because it is the great divider. People who feel it can't believe that others can't; people who don't have it think people who do are lying just to appear to the world as good and kind -- they don't really believe empathy even exists.

Does this make any sense?

In order to be a leader a man must have followers. And to have followers, a man must have their confidence. Hence, the supreme quality for a leader is unquestionably integrity. Without it, no real success is possible, no matter whether it is on a section gang, a football field, in an army, or in an office. If a man's associates find him guilty of being phony, if they find that he lacks forthright integrity, he will fail. His teachings and actions must square with each other. The first great need, therefore is integrity and high purpose.

-Dwight D Eisenhower
