Bill Foster earned a Ph.D. in theoretical particle physics from Harvard.
I don't think Harvard is exactly known for their physics program. None of my physicist friends ever talked about it.
(Not intended to diminish Foster's accomplishment, but I do like diminishing Harvard.)
I'm a Princeton guy, I love dumping on Harvard, but they have a spectacularly good department. Sheldon Glashow is there, till his death last November Sidney Coleman was there, Vafa, Strominger, Maldacena, Lisa Randall, Lena V. Hau, it just goes on and on...
They're fabulous, and have been for the entirety of the twentieth century.
Not as good as Princeton, of course, but Princeton, in my humble opinion, was the best in the world for most of the twentieth century; certainly for the period 1945-1990 or so.

(Princeton physics, again): Here is a partial list of people I had courses from 1970-74: John Wheeler (was Feynman's Ph.D. advisor), Val Fitch (Nobel, 1980), Jim Peebles, who should, with Bob Dicke, have shared part of the 1978 Nobel for the cosmic blackbody radiation; Alan H. Guth (inventor of inflation), Karel Kuchar, world class relativist now at Utah, Valentine Bargmann, collaborator of Einstein, famous mathematical physicist known for work in symmetries in particle physics.
I didn't have a course from Dicke, or Eugene Wigner (Nobel, 1963), or Arthur Wightman (PCT, Spin and Statistics, and All That), or David Gross (Nobel, 2004) or Frank Wilcek (Nobel, 2004) or Joe Taylor (Nobel, 1993); but every one of these guys was there. 60 professors or visitors with the rank of professors in the department!

Depends on her mood.
That's standard for me.
The relations between IAS and Princeton U are, to put it mildly, ambiguous. For the longest time IAS was housed at Princeton (oh, 1932-1945, maybe.) It didn't go over to Fuld Hall and all that till after the war, I think. People at IAS sometimes give courses at Princeton, often give talks there, and there's a lot of foot traffic (about a mile, IIRC) between the two. I am pretty sure IAS folk have complete freedom with respect to Princeton facilities (certainly the libraries.) Ed Witten sort of yoyo'd between Princeton Physics and IAS till he took the job at Harvard (forgot to mention him, I think, with respect to Harvard, which is worse than forgetting Hawking at Cambridge.)

In a stunning upset Saturday that could be a harbinger of trouble for the GOP this fall, a little-known Democratic physicist won the special election for a seat drawn to re-elect former Republican House Speaker Dennis Hastert.
Bill Foster defeated Republican Jim Oberweis, who lost his fourth high-profile election in six years, following an expensive and highly negative contest.
The win gives Democrats another House seat until at least the end of the year. It also could serve as an omen for November, when two other Illinois congressional seats are up for grabs following Republican retirements and Sen. Barack Obama could bring out a huge turnout if he's the Democratic presidential nominee.

My beautiful, unbelievably smart daughter switched majors for the fourth time last week (she's in the second semester of her junior year), but it sort of doesn't matter because she has enough to major in any of them, from German to international relations to history to Russian. I think she'll graduate with IR and Russian, but who the hell knows? Anyway, she wanted me to take Russian during my year off, so that we might speak Russian with each other; and as we do not speak English with each other nearly as often as I'd like, this was a significant motivation. Princeton required either German or Russian from physics majors in the early 1970's.

While that might sound ambivalent, I'm actually positive about the vehicle despite it's flaws. If I had my druthers I'd get a Prius, but they're just too small for what I "need" right now and they just aren't good winter cars (plus there are safety issues with battery placement).

BRANCACCIO: Welcome to NOW.
Let's figure out these gasoline prices. How did it happen that we now live in a country where a gallon of gas that costs deep into the two dollar dollar-range is the norm? Prices are up 56% over the past two years. This has been great for stockholders of oil companies but it is killing lower-income people who have to drive a lot to work or for work.
The typical explanation for what now seem permanently high prices is that darn law of supply and demand. We've had a team looking into gasoline prices and it's not so simple. It may surprise you to learn that recent spikes at the pump have less to do with hurricanes or pricey crude oil, and much to do with the business decisions of an industry that is right now enjoying record profits. http://www.pbs.org/now/

Most of our mileage is highway, so we don't see much in the way of gas savings.
Yup, it sucks on HW. Most hybrids are optimized for city anyway, but because of the weight you can really watch the performance decrease (I have the console computer that shows you details). On the flip side, I have used the available data to choose non-HW routes to retain some of the fuel economy. But the little engine just has trouble in the cold and the longer night hours means more reliance on it for battery charging...

i had an interesting conversation with a hummer owner once. he was short, not bright, and wearing an orange jumpsuit. he liked to talk, about himself. i asked him about his ride, and he mentioned that someone else was picking up the gas tab. "the company" but not really, if you get my drift. he seemed a little gay, or republican, or both. it was hard to tell.

Will Forster recalibrate the coefficient of the district's dangle?
Good point about downticket races this year. Attention needs to be paid to state legislatures: census will be coming up in 10 and redistricting after that. Some atrocities (TX for starters; no doubt others can be cited) need to be corrected.
I'd love to see a math geek work out software that would handle redistricting strictly on a logical basis: one man one vote in the most compact form possible. Get rid of Mr. Gerry and his mandering for good.

I was under the impression that much of the current rise in oil prices is because the price of oil is pegged to the value of the dollar which continues to slide in comparison to other currencies because of the monetary policies of the Federal Reserve (Bush Assministration)
It is my (albeit limited) understanding that if the Fed promoted a stronger dollar policy by raising interest rates and calling investors into dollars that the price of oil would then diminish as the dollar strengthened. (I have asked those more knowledgeable about this several times though I have not received clarification)

Black Man Charged in Auburn U. Student Death
UBURN, Ala. (AP) - A man arrested after a car and foot chase by police who suspected him in a string of robberies was charged with capital murder in the abduction and shooting death of an Auburn University freshman, police said Saturday.
Courtney Lockhart was arrested Friday in Phenix City, about 30 miles from the campus. Lauren Burk, 18, was found shot on the side of an off-campus road Tuesday night and her car was found burning in a campus parking lot.
Police would not say what led them to charge Lockhart, 23, in her killing or divulge evidence linking them.

Lockhart, 23, was charged with three capital counts accusing him of murder along with kidnapping, robbery and attempted rape, Auburn Assistant Police Chief Thomas Dawson said.
Lockhart tried to flee Phenix City police after being pulled over Friday, Dawson said. He said Lockhart's vehicle matched the description of one in a string of robberies. After a short pursuit and a foot chase, he was captured.
Dawson said investigators have a photo of the suspect that was enhanced with the help of NASA, but he wouldn't say how the photo was obtained. "We have the right individual in jail, I'm 100 percent sure of that," Dawson said.

I've been looking at the Escape. I'm sure pretty soon the market will be flooded with Hybrid SUV's...

Ford has an on board computer that monitors all four wheels, called traction control (IIRC) available on the two wheel drives. Works the motor & brakes in tandem, lots less weight than the 4WD, monitors each wheel something like 120 times a second. I've had just as good traction w/front wheel drive as most have with 4/wheel drive just cause I'm used to driving in inclement weather.

Karin,
I don't think I was saying that changing the monetary policy was an easy thing to do. If I did, that was not my intention. But I feel, absolutely, that it is the right thing to do at this time. Loosening the interest rates is NOT helping "Normal" people at this time because most people are struggling to meet their obligations -- not expand their obligations.
They could lower the interest rates down to very little and it would not help if people have NO money. What is is needed is a way to get people more money. If their wages will not rise (and that is sure apparent to me) then they must be able to get more for their money. The only way for this to happen is for their money to be worth more.
Elias, look at a Toyota Matrix. Good mileage, and pretty good sized. The front passenger seat folds down as well as the back seat, so you can haul stuff that's 10 feet long.

NTodd,
of process, and process only:
the problem i have with caucusing is that it penalizes some people for nothing more than their schedule. that's wrong. it's bad enough that we only vote on one, work week day of the year, instead of a weekend or over a long, mail in month, or some combo of good ways to vote. caucusing takes that problems and exacerbates it 100%. i have a personal anecdote or two i'll spare you in this.
the whole of the process is not democratic. that's the problem. step back, look at the big picture. don't like it/them/him/her/tactics? what are we doing to change it? now? b/c 2016 is the soonest we'll have the changes in place, nationally, to make primaries "fair." or even, sort of. the rest is just distraction. i come from one of the states currently considering a "revote." think about that, and how much of democracy we've already sacrificed.
