GravatarBill Foster earned a Ph.D. in theoretical particle physics from Harvard.

I don't think Harvard is exactly known for their physics program. None of my physicist friends ever talked about it.

(Not intended to diminish Foster's accomplishment, but I do like diminishing Harvard.)

I'm a Princeton guy, I love dumping on Harvard, but they have a spectacularly good department. Sheldon Glashow is there, till his death last November Sidney Coleman was there, Vafa, Strominger, Maldacena, Lisa Randall, Lena V. Hau, it just goes on and on...

They're fabulous, and have been for the entirety of the twentieth century.

Not as good as Princeton, of course, but Princeton, in my humble opinion, was the best in the world for most of the twentieth century; certainly for the period 1945-1990 or so.

Guth (inventor of inflation), Karel Kuchar, world class relativist now at Utah, Valentine Bargmann, collaborator of Einstein, famous mathematical physicist known for work in symmetries in particle physics.

I didn't have a course from Dicke, or Eugene Wigner (Nobel, 1963), or Arthur Wightman (PCT, Spin and Statistics, and All That), or David Gross (Nobel, 2004) or Frank Wilcek (Nobel, 2004) or Joe Taylor (Nobel, 1993); but every one of these guys was there. 60 professors or visitors with the rank of professors in the department!

GravatarThe relations between IAS and Princeton U are, to put it mildly, ambiguous. For the longest time IAS was housed at Princeton (oh, 1932-1945, maybe.) It didn't go over to Fuld Hall and all that till after the war, I think. People at IAS sometimes give courses at Princeton, often give talks there, and there's a lot of foot traffic (about a mile, IIRC) between the two. I am pretty sure IAS folk have complete freedom with respect to Princeton facilities (certainly the libraries.) Ed Witten sort of yoyo'd between Princeton Physics and IAS till he took the job at Harvard (forgot to mention him, I think, with respect to Harvard, which is worse than forgetting Hawking at Cambridge.)

Democrat Foster wins Hastert's seat
Tribune staff reporter

9:20 PM CST, March 8, 2008

In a stunning upset Saturday that could be a harbinger of trouble for the GOP this fall, a little-known Democratic physicist won the special election for a seat drawn to re-elect former Republican House Speaker Dennis Hastert.

Bill Foster defeated Republican Jim Oberweis, who lost his fourth high-profile election in six years, following an expensive and highly negative contest.

The win gives Democrats another House seat until at least the end of the year. It also could serve as an omen for November, when two other Illinois congressional seats are up for grabs following Republican retirements and Sen. Barack Obama could bring out a huge turnout if he's the Democratic presidential nominee.

NTodd, McGuffin Hitler

My beautiful, unbelievably smart daughter switched majors for the fourth time last week (she's in the second semester of her junior year), but it sort of doesn't matter because she has enough to major in any of them, from German to international relations to history to Russian. I think she'll graduate with IR and Russian, but who the hell knows? Anyway, she wanted me to take Russian during my year off, so that we might speak Russian with each other; and as we do not speak English with each other nearly as often as I'd like, this was a significant motivation. Princeton required either German or Russian from physics majors in the early 1970's.

Это всё.

Yeah! Now all we have to do is worry about the shoot to kill policy of this group http://www.infragard.net/ that gets informed before public does. It puts protecting Corporations and businesses ahead of protecting people of US. They even have a shoot to kill policy to protect their business. They have the same rights as any other citizen to protect their property. It is pretty scary.

One of those candidates took time from the campaign schedule to make a TV spot for this race.

GravatarAre you still driving that Escape Hybrid? If so, what do you think of it?

Yup, have it and still of 2 minds about it. Good winter car from a handling/clearance POV, nice cargo space (or dog space). Mileage is disappointing on cold days (though not unexpected) and as much as I've gotten used to the American interior aesthetic I still hatehatehate the overall interface. While that might sound ambivalent, I'm actually positive about the vehicle despite it's flaws. If I had my druthers I'd get a Prius, but they're just too small for what I "need" right now and they just aren't good winter cars (plus there are safety issues with battery placement).

BRANCACCIO: Welcome to NOW.

Let's figure out these gasoline prices. How did it happen that we now live in a country where a gallon of gas that costs deep into the two dollar dollar-range is the norm? Prices are up 56% over the past two years. This has been great for stockholders of oil companies but it is killing lower-income people who have to drive a lot to work or for work.

The typical explanation for what now seem permanently high prices is that darn law of supply and demand. We've had a team looking into gasoline prices and it's not so simple. It may surprise you to learn that recent spikes at the pump have less to do with hurricanes or pricey crude oil, and much to do with the business decisions of an industry that is right now enjoying record profits.

Yup, it sucks on HW. Most hybrids are optimized for city anyway, but because of the weight you can really watch the performance decrease (I have the console computer that shows you details). On the flip side, I have used the available data to choose non-HW routes to retain some of the fuel economy. But the little engine just has trouble in the cold and the longer night hours means more reliance on it for battery charging...

The number of self identified Republicans has declined these last few years. In fact, Mr. 19% probably doesn't have 19%. His supporters are down to a few lone whackjobs and the Democratic leadership in Congress.

Gravatar4lg, did you see this at Crooks and Liars? It's a photo of a gas pump after a hummer pulled away.

i had an interesting conversation with a hummer owner once. he was short, not bright, and wearing an orange jumpsuit. he liked to talk, about himself. i asked him about his ride, and he mentioned that someone else was picking up the gas tab. "the company" but not really, if you get my drift. he seemed a little gay, or republican, or both. it was hard to tell.

GravatarWill Forster recalibrate the coefficient of the district's dangle?

Good point about downticket races this year. Attention needs to be paid to state legislatures: census will be coming up in 10 and redistricting after that. Some atrocities (TX for starters; no doubt others can be cited) need to be corrected.

I'd love to see a math geek work out software that would handle redistricting strictly on a logical basis: one man one vote in the most compact form possible. Get rid of Mr. Gerry and his mandering for good.

Yeah, I know, dream on....

GravatarBut since the peak in 1981, more than half of the refineries that used to operate in the U.S. have been shut down. And that, charge critics, has been part of an industry strategy going back years.

[graphic]

In this Rand Corporation survey, "key members of the … refining industry" complained of "… substantial excess capacity …" in the 1980s and '90s … producing poor profits.

According to one quote … those times were "'… ugly for refining. [executives] know what caused it, and they don't want to do it again.'"

GravatarI was under the impression that much of the current rise in oil prices is because the price of oil is pegged to the value of the dollar which continues to slide in comparison to other currencies because of the monetary policies of the Federal Reserve (Bush Assministration)

It is my (albeit limited) understanding that if the Fed promoted a stronger dollar policy by raising interest rates and calling investors into dollars that the price of oil would then diminish as the dollar strengthened. (I have asked those more knowledgeable about this several times though I have not received clarification)

GravatarBlack Man Charged in Auburn U. Student Death

UBURN, Ala. (AP) - A man arrested after a car and foot chase by police who suspected him in a string of robberies was charged with capital murder in the abduction and shooting death of an Auburn University freshman, police said Saturday.

Courtney Lockhart was arrested Friday in Phenix City, about 30 miles from the campus. Lauren Burk, 18, was found shot on the side of an off-campus road Tuesday night and her car was found burning in a campus parking lot.

Police would not say what led them to charge Lockhart, 23, in her killing or divulge evidence linking them.

GravatarLockhart, 23, was charged with three capital counts accusing him of murder along with kidnapping, robbery and attempted rape, Auburn Assistant Police Chief Thomas Dawson said.

Lockhart tried to flee Phenix City police after being pulled over Friday, Dawson said. He said Lockhart's vehicle matched the description of one in a string of robberies. After a short pursuit and a foot chase, he was captured.

Dawson said investigators have a photo of the suspect that was enhanced with the help of NASA, but he wouldn't say how the photo was obtained. "We have the right individual in jail, I'm 100 percent sure of that," Dawson said.

Ford has an on board computer that monitors all four wheels, called traction control (IIRC) available on the two wheel drives. Sadly, no. Why?

I generally don't drink when I have my kids.

GravatarSorry, Sinf. Nice catch on the video and all, but really who gives a fuck if McCain smoked Luckies or Chesterfields back in the day?
sidhra

Ah, I was just being snarky. I figured some wingnut fundie or something would be SHOCKED about it.

I did tag it with "snark," tho' ...

Wow. Must the that inner self-loating and hatred that makes you such a warm, wonderful human being.

A murdered girl is turned into some kind of sick symbol for your own hatred and loathing, huh?

My, but you must feel really good about yourself as you type this useless drivel on various sites, hoping to elicit a reply. Instead, you just get my pity, and contempt..... for being such a shallow, useless person.

You really are a pathetic little turd, aren't you?

Gravatarbuy a vibrator.

They never leave the toilet seat up.

Gravatar8690 Wyomingites have spoken.

That's why caucuses are bullshit. The Communications director of the Wyoming Dems was thrilled with the turnout - it was more than a ten-fold increase over the 2004 caucuses. He was very excited that this time, they were getting a 14% turnout rate.

What do you suppose the turnout would be if you were holding a regular fucking election?

Gravatar'Tis tres difficult, I'm afraid. I've yet to follow through on my hope to quit.

But I wish ye all the best of luck on all your quests.

GravatarKarin,

I don't think I was saying that changing the monetary policy was an easy thing to do. If I did, that was not my intention. But I feel, absolutely, that it is the right thing to do at this time. Loosening the interest rates is NOT helping "Normal" people at this time because most people are struggling to meet their obligations -- not expand their obligations.

They could lower the interest rates down to very little and it would not help if people have NO money. What is is needed is a way to get people more money. If their wages will not rise (and that is sure apparent to me) then they must be able to get more for their money. The only way for this to happen is for their money to be worth more.

Hence. . . .

GravatarElias, look at a Toyota Matrix. Good mileage, and pretty good sized. The front passenger seat folds down as well as the back seat, so you can haul stuff that's 10 feet long.

Thank you too.
I do like the Matrix. Is that the sister of the Pontiac Vibe? If so, it would really sweeten it to be American made.

pbs. done now, sorry.

GravatarYeah, JR, I was telling the C&P troll that it was tactless and classless to post that stuff here, IMO. It was directed to jack. Sorry for any confusion ...

what part of regular fucking election do certain partisans not understand.

many states caucus. they always have, or they have decided to, or have switched from one form to another.

Gravatar4Legs, he went to process group today, laid it out, asked for her forgiveness.  He offered to help her with sober living if she would agree to live near her school and her child.  She said she wanted to stay out where she is, 30 miles away, because of her 'foundation.'  What I really think she wants to do is hide out and go out and get high again.

She was pretty uncooperative.  And she's not getting better in the rehab center she's in.

I went to one this week.

GravatarJR, only because we just learned this today.

He was saying he was going back to Chicago, where he's from, and if he knows what's good for him, he'd best be on his way.  If her husband knew where he was...well...as he said, it sucks that I've got felonies.

GravatarQnd Obama nets another superdelegate. C'mon on down U.S. Rep. Bill Foster.

Beuatiful.

GravatarThat's why caucuses are bullshit.

Well, tell that to the thousands (yes thousands) of heretofore uninspired stay at home Wyoman Democrats that are energized to make something happen for Democratic candidates in their state. You take those motivated people and send them out with a mission and you might just turn Wyoming purple from blood red. Caucuses focus the activists, who motivate the voters. Don't dismiss them so blithely.

GravatarAh, JR, I see why you thought I was talking to you!

We both said "fuck off, jack" and you thought I was quoting you and responding thereto.

Nope, I was actually telling jack to fuck off. Besides, I used a comma and you didn't.

That's too bad. It sounds like he took a look at losing his child and made the hard choice to do the right thing.

Ironic, isn't it?

If she's not getting better, it's probably better that she stay 30 miles away.

I'm so sorry.

GravatarCosmic, you did not offend in the least.

No, my daughter had an affair with another guy.  This wasn't her husband.  She came here with the specific intent of having an affair with the junkie loser bf.

I wrote her about it.  All she said was, don't write me anymore.  That letter was painful.

GravatarWell, tell that to the thousands (yes thousands) of heretofore uninspired stay at home Wyoman Democrats that are energized to make something happen for Democratic candidates in their state.

Imagine how many TENS of thousands would vote in a REAL election.

GravatarI think I'm ready to give up on politics and on all organized forms of activity.

It's better to just hibernate and let other people sink or swim on their own.

GravatarImagine how many TENS of thousands would vote in a REAL election.

Caucuses are real elections.

Gravatar4Legs, our insurance hasn't run out yet.

We're going to offer to move her to a facility closer to home, where she can attend school and be near her child.  If she's serious about getting well, she'll deal with it.

If not, we  can only assume she wants to stay where she is so that she can use again.  I've never been in rehab, but I'm assuming getting high is something that just might be discussed.

GravatarShe was pretty uncooperative. And she's not getting better in the rehab center she's in.

Time to start seriously thinking about keeping your granddaughter away from her.

Thank you. To see people in my district who don't ever get involved in politics participating and passionate, out meeting their neighbors, becoming a community... it was awesome, in the old sense of the word.

People who diss that are assholes.

And they generally go on to be involved in other things as well.

It's empowering.

Shit, how many of us live in places where we've felt out numbered by the rethugs? where our vote didn't count? where we felt like there was nothing we could do to change things?

Gravataris voting by mail not/regular fucking elections? is early voting? this hysteria about caucuses is both childish and funny.

NTodd,

of process, and process only:

the problem i have with caucusing is that it penalizes some people for nothing more than their schedule. that's wrong. it's bad enough that we only vote on one, work week day of the year, instead of a weekend or over a long, mail in month, or some combo of good ways to vote. caucusing takes that problems and exacerbates it 100%. i have a personal anecdote or two i'll spare you in this.

the whole of the process is not democratic. that's the problem. step back, look at the big picture. don't like it/them/him/her/tactics? what are we doing to change it? now? b/c 2016 is the soonest we'll have the changes in place, nationally, to make primaries "fair." or even, sort of. the rest is just distraction. i come from one of the states currently considering a "revote." think about that, and how much of democracy we've already sacrificed.

Gravatarthe problem i have with caucusing is that it penalizes some people for nothing more than their schedule.

So does voting on the first Tuesday in November exclusively.

Gravatarshe's not getting another cent from her father or me.
