Greenwald...
No matter how many times one sees it, it will never cease to amaze that the exact same media mavens who righteously strutted around demanding that Bill Clinton be impeached or forced to resign because the "honor" of our political system demanded that, continue casually to dismiss every crime of the last seven years as nothing more than a garden-variety, good faith "policy dispute" which only shrill rabble want to see "turned into a criminal or impeachable affair."
Another thing the media did with Clinton is second guess every military move he ever instigated, accusing him of "wagging the dog" in Kosovo. The fucks sure as hell weren't automatically assuming that he or people in his administration were telling the truth, the default position with Bush.

Broder has one correct pont in that pile of shit Greenwald posts: If Clinton had resigned, and Gore assumed the presidency, the world would indeed be a different, and much better, place. Not that Clinton should have resigned over theRepublicans' filthy, pornographic tactics, but certaily Gore finishing out the term would have led to Gore being overwhelmingly elected, no 9/11, and 7000 Americans alive and home with their families, among many other benefits to the population of the USA and the rest of the world..

The scraggly beard, the beret adorned with a star, the intense gaze: it is an instantly recognisable image which has been used to sell everything from booze to T-shirts to mugs to bikinis.
Che Guevara is an icon of the 20th century whose brand has turned into a worldwide marketing phenomenon. If you want to shift more products or give your corporate image a bit of edge, the Argentine revolutionary's face and name are there to be used, like commercial gold dust.
The fact that Guevara was a communist guerrilla and Marxist ideologue is an irony of little interest to his capitalist exploiters. It has, however, become a problem for his children.
Aleida Guevara this week denounced the commercialisation of her father's image as an affront to his socialist ideals. "Something that bothers me now is the appropriation of the figure of Che that has been used to make enemies from different classes. It's embarrassing."
A man who fought and died trying to overthrow capitalism and material excess should not be used to sell British vodka, French fizzy drinks and Swiss mobile phones, among other travesties, she said. "We don't want money, we demand respect."
Any chance Hillary will somehow let all the Larry Johnsons that are out there that they are freaking loons?
The freaking loons are already saying that Hillary cant make them support Obama, and that their "movement" is bigger than Hillary now anyway.

to me, the important question becomes "who receives all that money?" it seems "minor," in the face of trillions lost on a senseless war/occupation, and the various other unaccounted, crony revenue streams of the bush admin, but in truth a trillion dollars is nothing to sneeze at. so who is getting it? and what are they doing with it? what, specifically, are they buying with it here, in terms of our political process?
if it were me, i'd be turning back a small percentage of that money, just a couple of tens of millions, to make sure that politically, yurp, asia and amurka were all inclined to keep that one way flow of money flowing, and that trade imbalance imbalanced. wouldn't seem too hard, neither. consumers like consuming a lot, convincing them to remain so seems both cheap and easy to me.

GENEVA, June 6 (Reuters) - United Nations experts on child rights criticised the United States on Friday over detention of juveniles at Guantanamo, in Afghanistan and Iraq, and voiced concern that some may have suffered cruel treatment.
They also called for an end to recruitment of under-18s into the U.S. armed forces and for a halt to enlistment campaigns aimed specifically at young people from minority groups and poor or single-parent families.
The strictures were issued in a report from the 18-member Committee on the Rights of the Child, which monitors performance under U.N. pacts, including two signed by Washington on children and armed conflict and on child prostitution.
On under-18s -- defined by the U.N. as children -- held in U.S.-run prisons in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Committee said it was "concerned over reports indicating the use of cruel, inhumane and degrading treatment."
The 18 experts, nominated by governments but expected to be independent of them, said they had similar reports on abuse of young prisoners held for several years at the U.S. naval base in Cuba's Guantanamo Bay.
They declared themselves "seriously concerned that children who were recruited or used in armed conflict, rather than being considered primarily as victims, are classified as 'unlawful enemy combatants'," and face military tribunals at the base.
Broder has one correct pont in that pile of shit Greenwald posts: If Clinton had resigned, and Gore assumed the presidency, the world would indeed be a different, and much better, place.
Anyone remember Broder supporting Gore over shrub in 2000?
I have to shake my head in disgust whenever I look at that McCain ad.
Because it's much better to bomb people and kill them than it is to sit down and talk to them.
What's even more pathetic is that the people who get off on war are too damn cowardly to enlist.

During the five years the United States has occupied Iraq, the Bush administration has created a new state with a number of notable features: A venal, dysfunctional government. A terrorist haven and training ground. A nation so violent and dangerous that 10 percent of the population has fled.
Add to that a new hallmark: Nearly the most corrupt nation on Earth.
Only two states out of 180, Somalia and Burma, outrank Iraq in Transparency International's latest worldwide corruption index. They are tied for last place. But Iraq has plummeted through the rankings since 2004, when it was near the middle of the pack, and is now within a hair's width of crashing to the bottom.
Along the way, U.S. officials say, Iraqi government officers, from Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki on down, have embezzled not only uncounted billions of dollars from their own treasury -- but also $18 billion in U.S. aid. That's about equal to the annual budget for Colorado.
Radhi al-Radhi, an Iraqi judge who provided that figure, was the state's chief anti-corruption official, until death threats forced him to flee last year. He called the theft among the largest in modern history.
In recent months, several U.S. government reports have detailed the problem, and Congress has held hearings. The conclusion: Not only has the United States provided much of the money Iraqi officials have purloined, U.S. officials have aided and abetted the theft.
The State Department, particularly, has seemed eager to obfuscate and cover up the thievery -- afraid, it seems, of tarnishing the Iraqi government's reputation. Last summer, embassy officials in Baghdad researched a 70-page internal but unclassified report that detailed the plundering of the nation's wealth. The pillage was so widespread, the report said, it threatened the Iraqi government's very survival.

The Commons vote on extending the limit from 28 days is on Wednesday.
The prime minister has told MPs that new safeguards mean suspects would only be held for six-weeks during "a terrorist crisis situation".
The government faces a battle to get the proposals through Parliament, amid claims they infringe civil liberties.

Yellow fever is sweeping through the thousands of Congolese expelled from Angola, a local official says.
At least 10 people have already died, says the mayor of Lutembo in south-west Democratic Republic of Congo.
The town's hospital, which is chronically short of medicines, is struggling to cope.
More than 20,000 Congolese diamond miners have been expelled from Angola in recent weeks. The UN is trying to reach the remote region by helicopter.
Previous mass expulsions in the area were halted by an agreement between the two countries but with Angola preparing for elections later this year, correspondents say the authorities are keen to rid the area of foreigners.
Last year, the two countries resolved their border dispute.
They have both experienced years of war, which correspondents say has led to confusion over their common boundary.

OT: An international appeal was launched yesterday urging Muslims around the world to learn about non-Muslims and their cultures for the sake of peaceful coexistence.
The call was made in a communique issued at the end of the International Islamic Conference for Dialogue, a three-day event that brought together more than 600 influential scholars and academics.
The plea, one of many in the 18-page document, aimed to encourage Muslims to reach out to people from other monotheistic faiths in order to diffuse conflict and restore tolerance. The appeal was careful to make the distinction between integration and assimilation: "Coexistence and cooperation do not mean concessions regarding the fundamental principles nor harmonising among religions."
The initiative has the support of the Saudi monarch King Abdullah, who is seen as a bridge between the west and the Muslim world. An ally, Dr Ezzedin Ibrahim from the Ministry of Presidential Affairs in the United Arab Emirates, said: "Saudi Arabia is the cradle of Islam and only King Abdullah could be effective in calling Muslims from all parts of the world."
In addition to the emphasis on dialogue, there was renewed commitment to fight terrorism, with a pledge to study the phenomena and causes of violence and fanaticism, a tacit acknowledgment that the negative perception of Islam stems from events such as suicide bombings.
There were signs that dialogue with other believers, specifically Jews, would be problematic. Several clerics, including the grand mufti of Saudi Arabia, said it was almost impossible to talk to them because of the situation in the occupied territories. "How can you negotiate with someone who is against you all the time? They seem to be against us in every way so I don't know how we're supposed to have dialogue."
Egyptian cleric Yusuf al-Qaradawi said he would only talk to Jews who denounced Zionism and he urged Muslims to talk to Buddhists, Hindus and atheists. His impromptu speech, lasting 15 minutes, garnered the loudest applause, proving his popularity among fellow clerics even if the west views him with suspicion.
Weeding the yard is hard work.

Funy story.
Audrey is outside cutting the grass. As all good grass cutters know, before you actually cut the grass, you clean the lawn.
So she goes to clean the yard, and she comes in afterward, and says, "You know what, mom? Sometimes it pays to clean the yard before you cut the grass."
I look at her, puzzled.
And then she holds up a $ 10.00 bill, and says, "I found this on the grass this morning."
We both died laughing.

t has taken almost £500,000, more than 4,200 hand-laid traps and rodent catchers flown in from New Zealand, but today the small Hebridean island of Canna will be officially declared rat-free.
When the voracious brown rat took hold it threatened precious sea bird colonies and one of its smallest and rarest inhabitants, the Canna mouse. Experts said 10,000 rats had invaded the 4.5 mile-long island.
In 2005 the National Trust for Scotland, the island's owners, with the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, also evacuated 150 Canna mice - a distinct sub-species of mouse - to prevent them being eaten by rats or dying from poison, rehousing them in Edinburgh zoo.
The last rat was seen in early 2006. The official end of the eradication programme will today be marked by the Scottish environment minister, Michael Russell. "Rats, while being fairly innocuous creatures in their natural environment, can have a devastating impact in a fragile ecosystem such as that of Canna," he said.
Despite its small size, baits had to be laid every 50 to 90 metres on a grid across the island's craggy interior.
Indeed, in general it does, but when you're making 67 campaign stops a day, or even dealing with all the meetings in a packed Exec schedules, schedules get out of whack and cascade, just like with airlines.

That always somewhat amuses me today, because if I knew how successful a person could be with a two year degree over a four year degree...I would have NEVER wasted as much time as I did...pursuing a Bachelor of Science.
But back to the thought of "combustion ignition" engines.
Over the course of my studies in the military, I learned basic skills pertaining to mechanics. This would also also include a certain amount of cross-training in electricity science, but at the very beginning...I truly had to have somebody explain the various typed of handtools, metal fasteners, ect ect
Things that anyone who's dad owned a shop, would completely take for granted.
My dad programmed computers, and yea, sure...he worked on his own cars, as well basic chores around the house, but there wasn't any really important work-related skills being inherited.
After failing college, is it any surprise I landed straight into the restaurant business? Some may say it was my alcohol and drug abuse, but those problems only insulated me emotionaly from the lack of confidence I had in my future. It was only later, those problems escalated into something serious, that could have been prevented with just good old fashioned communication from my pasrents...mostly about what was to be expected from me in terms of performance...and what could be truly afforded by their income level/savings.
Had I just been guided by counseling in High School...including that open communication I speak of with my parents...then as an 18-year-old adult participant and first test subject of the Reagan years, for especially these draconian laws of the War on Drugs, I suppose I would never had become so estranged by the time I was 21.
The way I see it, joining the military helped me escape that self-esteem problem. But in reality, my skillls developed maybe not so much from and regimented military training, but actually from a magazine called Hot Rod.

And David Neiwert channels DWD (who has been shouting this sentiment for DECADES!)
Much will be poured out by blabbing talking heads blabbing about Hillary's speech over the next several hours if not days.
And their dirty little secret is that they really aren't any smarter or more insightful than the average person. Most of them are analytical mediocrities (witness their record on the Iraq war and G.W. Bush).

That's not to say I didn't learn anything from the military.
But you would be surprised how much your hobbies drive you to creation.
Hot Rodding is an Engine of Invention.
The same goes for me these days when it comes to guitars and amps and whatnot.
I understand Electrical Motor Controllers (and industrial applications with other components as well)...are my professional weak spot, so as I learn about something I really care about...it keeps my mind open to the other thing I professionally need to understand, in my current occupation and field.
So even though I've really no interest in Hot Rods at the moment, or the past ten years let's say...I've been learning a lot about practical electronics/electrical maintenance. This is because I've shifted hobbies, get it?
I haven't really forgotten anything mechanical related...whether that be fluid dynamics, statics, dynamics, materials, thermodynamics, or even chemistry/physics/calculus...it just means I've put those subjects (engineering disciplines) away for the time being.
So this brings me back to the combustion ignition engine and the University of California at Berkeley.

LUCKNOW, India (AP) -- He's a revered Hindu monkey god. And now, he's the chairman of an Indian business school.
Hanuman, the popular god known for his strength and valor, has been named official chairman of the recently opened Sardar Bhagat Singh College of Technology and Management in northern India, a school official said Saturday.
The position comes with an incense-filled office, a desk and a laptop computer. Four chairs will be placed facing the empty seat reserved for the chairman and all visitors must enter the office barefoot, said Vivek Kangdi, the school's vice chairman.
"It is our belief that any job that has the blessings of Lord Hanuman is bound to be a success," said Kangdi.
All Hindus know that Hanuman can lift mountains and leap oceans, but ancient texts make no mention of his business acumen.
"When we were looking for a chairman for our institution, we scanned many big names in the field of technology and management. Ultimately, we settled for Lord Hanuman, as none was bigger than him," Kangdi said.

When i was in college, we analyzed the thermodynamic qualities/quantities of the combustion ignition process and the diesel process.
I looked at this from both a student's perspective, and ironically enough...as almost like a S.A.E. member too.
I really felt I was on the same level as the engineers at Chrysler, Ford, and GM...just because I read enthusiastically Peterson publishing. In a way, it's sorta like the merger of the two year tech degree knowledge...with the four year degree I wrote about earlier.
I could follow my proffessor enough to pass the class, but did i ever really feel like i was at his level? No, not really. to this day, I still don't.

Uh, no. It's simply the exercise of variations on chemical/physical theories in existence for nearly 300 years. Most everything related to hot rodding is directly associated with engineering dynamics and the perfect gas law, all made understandable to the high school student with a car.
Do you really want to know the secrets of that universe, my friend?
Read The Design and Tuning of Competition Engines, 5th ed. (not 6th), and then read it again, and then again, and then put the principles into practice.

There's some very real problems with scientific opinion right now.
As a country we've come to realization our oil needs, inherently are tied to the religious-ethos problems of the Middle-East.
We can as a country, develop alternative solutions...but we cannot develop an alternative platform for the combustion ignition process.
It's just not going to happen.
There are too many factors to take into account.
How will a new type of energy conversion process be supported by technical expertise? How will this new technology be trained to a new generation of workers?
How much maintenance will handled in these new hybrids by the consumer?

These are very serious considerations for anyone pursuing electrically powered vehicles, whether it be a hybrid or straight forward battery bank.
Placing such a heavy interest in ethanol, seems to me...to just be a little too politically convenient in the Bush years.
There's no margins, that the words "alternative fuels" don't themselves, come up with strict numbers in the end.
And those numbers don't add up to what our country's needs are, regardless of emissions protocols.
You can't just drive GM into bankruptcy, then bring in foreign buyers, who in the end...simply wanted our R&D before they bankrupted the domestic factory infrastructure and workers.
You can't just say being green...is going to be the solution.
You have to...as Hilliary once said...be a Solution Specialist.

From the NYT: "he" is Barack.
In one telling example, he is moving to hire Aaron Pickrell, the chief political strategist of Gov. Ted Strickland of Ohio — who helped steer Mrs. Clinton to victory in that state’s primary — to run his effort against Mr. McCain there. In another, aides said, he has tapped Dan Carroll, an opposition researcher who gained fame digging up information on the records of opponents for Bill Clinton in 1992, to help gather information about Mr. McCain. That is the latest evidence that for all the talk on both sides about a new kind of politics, the general election campaign is likely to be bloody.
Bring it on, %$#@! GOP.

"18 Million Cracks" in the Class Ceiling [Kathryn Jean Lopez]
When she said that since we've put 50 women in space it can't be long before we launch a woman into the White House, I remembered a button someone gave me during the Clinton years, "If we can send a man to the moon, why can't we send Bill Clinton?"
Heh. A real wingnut knee-slapper.

And even though I don't listen to them much, both Buffy St-Marie and Joan Baez deserve a lot of respect for their work and their politics back in the day.

Lighten up, Francis.
The topic was annoying voices. I find their voices annoying. No reflection on their lives or politics.
Then Mr. Obama raised over $50 million, I believe it was...back in January.
If you want to be at my level...one of the middle class, a true conservative...a man of ideals and self-reliance...
...then it's time to end the southern strategy, and bring back the power of the largest city in the country...
...Chicago.
And if you look at my credentials in the user name, you'll see...this yankee is right around the corner from Mr. Barack Obama's hometown.

But Keith is not a misogynist in my humble opinion
plum p,better democrats please
There are degrees of "women issues," and Keith has his share. The nail in the coffin for me was his interview with DeeDee Myers about the challenges women in politics face--he simply did not get what she was talking about.
I also cringed a few years ago when someone (one of Keith's many enemies he must destroy with his words) accused him of being biased against women, and Keith defended himself by saying he had women actually working on his show. That was almost funny.

peterboy : I relish when OB goes to Iraq and tells troops he wants to bring them home.
I think the event will be masterful and his message will be strong and well received.
The DOD is busy now trying to figure out how they can keep him out of Iraq.
Sure there will be some few who will be around questioning why they are leaving "without victory" but winning to them will be getting out with their buddies alive.
I hadn't though of it before, but yeah, you're right - If/when he goes to Iraq, his speech will, well, change the fucking world.
thanks, billy b.

This has been a long time coming. A lot longer back than the Uraguay Round of the GATT treaty...the deflection of repercussions from what lowering interest rates did to us in the 90's...and what NAFTA numbers ultimately proved to most voters in the debate in Cleveland, let alone what Mr. Penn didn't want revealed from the Presidential library.
I'm very proud of Mr. Clinton's accomplishments, in particular his role in bringing about "solutions" to our aging baby boomer problem.
But he wasn't strong enough.
They said...they wanted "strong" in the polls, when Dubya first started.
They haven't seen strong yet.

Meander--honestly, the DOD and BUSHCO are trying to figure out how they can control his visit.
this will be a very complicated enterprise, as it requires real security AND usually Congressional delegations only go in groups.
very interesting stuff.
But speaking to the troops who are on their fifth tour and stop-loss imprisoned, will be a revealing moment.
it will have some gamble to it, it is certainly not a controlled town hall with tickets handed out by the local chamber.
but their are too many troops who just want out of their and all the careerist West Pointers arent going to tell them what to think and say.

I thought it was very good. Not brilliant, but she's a wonk, not an orator. And I liked the "every moment spent looking back keeps us from moving forward" line and that whole bit myself. That's the kind of talk that resonates with low info voters.
This was the speech I expected on Tuesday and I think the delay is going to rob it of some if its impact, but not much. She did good.
And to add to the fashion critque, bad choice on the outfit. I think a brighter color would added to the tone of the speech. I was trying to decide what color would have worked though. Not yellow or blue. Certainly not pink.Red would have looked terrific but weird subliminal messages in that color. I think a nice rich shade of plum would have worked better.
But that's all nonsense anyway. She did what she had to do and she did it really well. I'm proud of her today and I'm glad to feel good about her again.

There's going to be somebody in office, who will be un-influenced now.
Somebody who will make hard decisions, when people who are in the pockets of the ultra-rich will be willing to call him a "nigger" for the tail that wags the dog.
I will be right behind him...with my middle finger raised high. My other hand might be carrying the union jack.

I know these people, and most of them I like, in many cases quite a lot, but the hatred of Islam and all things Democratic, is sad and perplexing.
They have these beliefs because people they look up to, their pastors, their political leaders, the editors of the publications they read, have told them over and over and over for forty years that Democrats and Islam threaten the things they care about. They have been told that if gays are allowed to marry, it somehow casts a shadow on the validity of their own marriages. They have been told that Democrats will raise their taxes, spend money like water, teach their children to despise their parents and their parents beliefs, and murder millions of (unborn) children.
Mostly, they feel threatened unless they can believe that someone, somewhere, is In Control. Uncontrolled events, uncontrolled feelings, are threatening. That's what was so scary about the sixties.
