The University of Cambridge is proposing to drop the requirement for a foreign language GCSE as part of its admissions criteria to attract more children from state schools.
Cambridge said it is the only university that still insists on a core of subjects students must have studied if they want to apply for a place at one of its colleges, which includes a GCSE level A to C in a foreign language.
But from next September Cambridge wants to scrap the system and leave it up to individual departments to specify the subjects and qualifications required.
One reason behind the change was the government's decision to drop a compulsory foreign language from the national curriculum after 14.
The change in the curriculum has been significant, the university said. In 2000 80% of all school students - from both the private and state schools - took a foreign language at GCSE, but that has now fallen to below 50%. The number of state schools where students are required to study a foreign language after 14 is now around 17%, the university said.
History repeats. Only in a worse form.

THE PRESIDENT: I think we're in an unusual period. We went through 52 consecutive months of uninterrupted job growth, and like any free market there's also downturns, and we're in one. And the question is how best to react during the downturn. Fortunately, we anticipated the downturn and have proposed a temporary, robust stimulus package — which hasn't yet to happen.
You know, people believe — the experts believe, and they tell me — and I'm certainly no economic expert, but they tell me that this package will have a very positive effect on the economy throughout the year.
You're not an economic expert?

That's just the price of progress. In the free market, some industries and areas do badly and people just have to adapt, and other sectors get hundreds of billions in bailouts from the Government.
The House FISA vote was terrific. Watching the debate on C-Span, all House Repubs voted against the Democratic bill. Now, many here have been going after the Democrats who supported telecom immunity but this seems a golden opportunity to go after so called moderate Repubs who voted for immunity. I'm specifically thinking of Shayes of Connecticut, who just won by a hair last time, & is always talking about how moderate & bipartisan he is. ZURICH, Switzerland (AP) - Swiss police say they fired tear gas at pro-Tibet demonstrators who tried to storm the Chinese consulate in Zurich.
Hundreds of people took part in the protest Saturday against a Chinese crackdown on riots protesting its rule of Tibet.
Swiss Police say tear gas was used when several protesters attempted to break into the consulate.
Tibetan groups want the Swiss government to press China on its human rights record.
Switzerland has condemned the violence in Tibet and urged China to safeguard people's right to free expression.
Chinese media are reporting that 10 people were killed on Friday when demonstrators clashed with security forces in Tibet's capital Lhasa. Exile group say the toll could be as high as 100.

It's a joke. The "job growth" the beady-eyed insect refers to was anemic with the growth being less than what was necessary given the size of the US work force. Atrios posts the government job report every month - we've all seen the lower numbers.
The type/quality of the jobs are another problem.

The Federation of Poles in Great Britain has "reluctantly" contacted the Press Complaints Commission, accusing the Daily Mail of defaming Polish residents in the UK.
In its letter of complaint to the PCC, the federation accused the Daily Mail of printing articles that gave rise to "negative emotions and tensions between the new EU immigrants and local communities".
The Daily Mail has strongly rejected the complaint. A spokesman insisted the paper was "not in any way anti-Polish" and said that it ran plenty of positive stories about people from Poland.
The FPGB letter, sent last month, also complained about 50 Daily Mail headlines it said displayed anti-Polish sentiment.
The organisation claimed that the paper has a deliberate policy aimed at encouraging discrimination against immigrants, in particular Poles and their families.

For what it's worth this is what they think of the US efforts on the other side of the world.
Fed Efforts Failing
Ben S. Bernanke can't revive the US housing market and the banks aren't helping him.
The US Federal Reserve has cut interest rates five times, pumped $US200 billion ($213 billion) into the financial system this week, and on Friday its New York branch provided funds to help rescue Bear Stearns Cos.
None of that has brought down mortgage rates for residential borrowers, whose success in refinancing or buying would help bolster the US economy.

Hard-line allies of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad are ahead in Iran's parliamentary election, partial results suggest.
But conservative critics of Mr Ahmadinejad also appear to be making a strong showing that could undermine his domination of the parliament.
Reformists are said to be struggling after large numbers of their candidates were barred from the race.
The United States says this means the results were "cooked".
The Associated Press (AP) news agency reports that 144 out of 290 parliamentary seats have been decided so far.
Quoting state television, official news agency IRNA and reports from local officials, AP says pro-Ahmadinejad politicians have won 53 seats, reformists 18, and conservative critics of Mr Ahmadinejad 38.
WTF? Who would want to watch a show about the social lives of the super rich? Is that what we've come to?

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Supporters of Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton are once again ardently courting Iowa Democratic activists as they vie for the support of delegates pledged to departed rival John Edwards.
Edwards finished second in the state's leadoff precinct caucuses on Jan. 3, but those caucuses are only the first step in a complicated process of picking the state's 45 pledged delegates to the Democratic National Convention in Denver in August.
The next step in that process are the conventions held Saturday in each of the state's 99 counties, where 13,000 activists gathered to elect delegates to congressional district and state conventions.

Mobile phone operators in parts of Afghanistan are being forced to shut down their networks at night after attacks by the Taliban who say Nato troops are using the signals to track them down, phone company officials say.
Residents in parts of southern Afghanistan have also reported that their mobile telephones no longer work at night.
An official from one of the networks confirmed on Saturday that his company has shut down coverage from dusk till dawn in some areas of the country.
Last month the Taliban ordered mobile phone operators to switch off their networks from 5pm till 7am.
Black preachers before a black audience are speaking in a mutually understandable set of concepts. It isn't surprising that they fall differently on white ears than on black ones. Consider as a counterexample, for instance, a white preacher extolling 'states' rights' to a largely white audience. Everybody knows he's talking, not about the Federalist Papers, but keeping the niggers down. Everybody.

Well, Atrios struggled for a while with how to handle his traffic, since he's just one person. For a while, we had a Threadbot, which threw out random lines from Pink Floyd and Gilbert and Sullivan. But since there's generally someone around, this is a better solution.
I don't even technically have the keys--they're Thers', as you can see--but I asked Atrios if he wanted me to stop, and he said no pretty emphatically.
So what is it, John? Was he anti-baptist before he was pro baptist?
In media reports, however, McCain has consistently referred to himself as Episcopalian and told McClatchy Newspapers in June that while his wife and two of their children have been baptized in the Baptist church, he had not.
"I didn't find it necessary to do so for my spiritual needs," he said.
The point is, how in fucking hell can Tim Russert show up on my teevee with an ad claiming that his network is all about "what really matters," and then the content of the network is one hundred and eighty motherfucking degrees off.
How do they get away with it? The dissonance is driving me nuts.
Could someone please post a youtube video showing the sanctimonious punkinhaid saying "it's about the war, it's about health care, it's about our sons and daughters," blah blah blah and juxtapose this with what the sonofabitch ACTUALLY talks about? Someone please do this at least for the historical record.

Obama Campaign Unveils New Poster-Boy:
The Right Reverend Jeremiah "God Damn America" Wright...
juan: and if we had heard Huckabee, say, sermonizing about evil-ution, it'd have been apologised for as irrelevant.
Like I said, you parse a Huckabee for code words, and the truth emerges rather quickly from the rhetoric. That's why he had traction much less widespread than had been assumed.
Those who despair of the country, and I'm occasionally one of them, should reflect on the failure of Huckabee, and Thompson, and Giuliani, and Romney in the primaries.

There's a documentary out on DVD now called Maxed Out about the credit industry and how American consumers are jammed up with debt. They interview that Robin guy about his Lifestyles show and he's all like, "Oh, people want to see what they can have, conspicuous consumption, all that jazz, blah blah blah."

Exiled to display in the March 5 Business section's Local Briefing was the news that the cost of a new presidential helicopter developed by Lockheed Martin has risen to $7.5 billion. Does President Bush have any regard at all for taxpayers?
I suggest you do some digging into this breathtaking expenditure. As it stands, you treated it, incredibly, as a local business story worth two paragraphs. Such a shocking story demands more than this casual treatment.

Parsley has his own history of controversial statements. As David Corn reported this week for Mother Jones, Parsley has called for Christians to wage war against the "false religion" of Islam, in order to destroy it. He does not distinguish between Islamic extremists and ordinary Muslims. "What some call ‘extremists’ are instead mainstream believers who are drawing from the well at the very heart of Islam," he has written.

plantsman: Buchanan talks about blood and soil and race in terms that would be quite congenial the day after Kristallnacht. He then sounds the slightest bit reasonable about something else, and people quickly forget what he's said in other contexts.
That's how it starts. He's moved his blood-soil-motherland racism and facsism to the point where it can be said, out loud, and nobody blinks; after all, Pat's really a nice guy at heart, just like that wonderful Bill Buckley.

Today is the kind of day one wants to crawl back into bed and pull the covers over their heads. All the news is so depressing and frightening.
Just this week I have had more people who survived the Great Depression tell me that what we are witnessing is a reminder of what happened in the 30's.
The bunch of criminals we have running this nation have done their level best to destroy all the safeguards that were put into place to avoid an economic meltdown. I have never been so scared in my life.
Not only did these genius hedge fund owners and the bankers bundle mortgages and sell them ,they did it to student loans. In today's NYT, there is an article about how student loans will be much less available for kids going to college in the fall. Those who can grab any are going to pay prohibitive rates.
Between the never-ending wars, the collapse of the economy, fuel prices, the cost of food, lack of health care, destroying the future for college bound kids, screwing the senior citizen's by giving broad power to the Pharma industry--I hope anyone even remotely connected to and those who cheered this bunch of crooks on will roast in hell for the rest of their days.
As for Bush and Cheney, SHOULD and that is a big if right now, Obama win--the only words I want to hear from the steps of the Capitol on inaugrual day, is "Arrest these men and women."

More than 1,400 rejected Iraqi asylum seekers are to be told they must go home or face destitution in Britain as the government considers Iraq safe enough to return them, according to leaked Home Office correspondence seen by the Guardian.
The Iraqis involved are to be told that unless they sign up for a voluntary return programme to Iraq within three weeks, they face being made homeless and losing state support. They will also be asked to sign a waiver agreeing the government will take no responsibility for what happens to them or their families once they return to Iraqi territory.
The decision by the home secretary, Jacqui Smith, to declare that it is safe to send asylum seekers back to Iraq comes after more than 78 people have been killed in incidents across Iraq since last Sunday.
The United Nations high commissioner for refugees (UNHCR) said its policy was that returns of asylum seekers to central and southern Iraq and for some categories to the north of the country were not advisable because of the continuing conflict.
The Refugee Council said the decision disclosed by the Guardian was a shocking example of the government's policy of using destitution to starve people into leaving the country.

Clinton-Obama War Creates Serious Tensions at DailyKos
March 15, 2008 10:14 AM
This is how ugly things have gotten between supporters of Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama -- Clinton supporters are staging what they call a "strike" at the influential liberal website DailyKos.
It's not really a "strike" -- blogging for these diarists is not a job, and stopping their blogging won't cause them financial hardship.
But, that said, these diarists' boycott of DailyKos is indicative of the turmoil in which the Democratic party finds itself.
(If you wish to turn that into a dirty joke, I'll understand.)

LONDON (Reuters) - The Foreign Office on Saturday dismissed as "inconceivable" calls by an ex-aide to former Prime Minister Tony Blair to open a channel of communication with al Qaeda.
Jonathan Powell, who served as Blair's chief of staff between 1995 and 2007, said he would "want to find a channel to al Qaeda" if he was still in government, the Guardian newspaper reported.
He was quoted as saying that a secret back channel between the British government and the IRA, first opened in the 1970s, was a key factor that contributed to a peace deal in Northern Ireland three decades later, which he was central to securing.
Only by talking to al Qaeda and the Taliban in Afghanistan could Western governments hope to secure a long-term halt in their campaigns of violence, he was reported as saying.
But the Foreign Office said: "It is inconceivable that Her Majesty's government would ever seek to reach a mutually acceptable accommodation with a terrorist organisation like al Qaeda."
Powell was speaking ahead of the publication of his book "Great Hatred, Little Room", which is to be serialised in the newspaper.
Already today we've passed the five centimetres they forecast, and it's still coming down strong. The plows will be out tonight, for sure.

Prof Wombat:
Do you have any info on this (from wikipedia):
Davies’ supporters contend that he gives due attention to the genocide and war crimes perpetrated by both Hitler and Stalin on Polish Jews and non-Jews. Davies himself argues that "Holocaust scholars need have no fears that rational comparisons might threaten that uniqueness. Quite the opposite." and that "...one needs to re-construct mentally the fuller picture in order to comprehend the true enormity of Poland’s wartime cataclysm, and then to say with absolute conviction ‘Never Again’."[4][5]
In 1986, Dawidowicz’s criticism of Davies’ historical treatment of the Holocaust was cited as a factor in a controversy at Stanford University in which Davies was denied a tenured faculty position for alleged "scientific flaws". Davies sued the university for breach of contract and defamation of character, but in 1989 the court ruled that it did not have jurisdiction in an academic matter.

Highly educated parents were more prone to stop their children having the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) jab during the scare over the vaccine, research has indicated.
A report into attitudes towards the joint MMR injection found a lower take-up rate among parents had gone on to further education.
They were also less likely to to have their children immunised against other diseases following the controversy surrounding MMR, authors of the study found.
Claims that the vaccine increased the risk of autism, first made in a 1998 study for The Lancet, kick-started a decade-long debate over the use of the single MMR jab.
A team from Royal Holloway, University of London, examined data from the Millennium Cohort Study to see how attitudes towards the vaccines changed following the allegations - which have since been debunked by much of the scientific community.
Listening to the broadcast. I feel bad for these soldiers. They will carry this with them for the rest of their lives.

He related a tale of how he managed to grab two tickets to a sold-out reunion show of "The Van Halen."
It involved a show back in the day, when they opened for Nugent, and the audience turned on the Nuge, screaming for more of Van Halen. Old Ted threw a star fit.

An outbreak of measles has been confirmed in Scotland, sparking a warning that children need to be fully vaccinated.
There have been 36 reported cases, 28 of which have been confirmed by Health Protection Scotland (HPS.)
The majority of the cases involved children under 16 years of age who have not received a complete course of the MMR vaccine.
Last year there were four cases and in 2006 there were 28 in the whole year.
I'm just happy that the "Facebook" rage has finally subsided.

LONDON (Reuters) - Police are investigating an alleged faith-hate crime after a priest was attacked in a churchyard in east London.
Canon Michael Ainsworth suffered cuts and bruises after being hit in the grounds of St George-in-the-East church in Canon Street Road near Whitechapel.
Two Asian youths are alleged to have attacked the 57-year-old churchman while hurling insults at his occupation, police said.

Mebbe now we can finally agree that violence does not solve problems. It's taken us so goddamned painfully long to figure that out. From now on, we will resolve conflicts, of all kinds, ONLY through the nonviolent means of dialogue based on mutual respect.
Got a problem with the "mutual respect" aspect of this equation? Then sincerely ask yourself why that is.

Why aren't gooey "progressives" condemning Wright's sermons as "hate speech"?
You mean like this?
Wright, whom Obama has embraced as a spiritual mentor, in February delivered his final sermon as pastor of Obama's congregation at Trinity United Church of Christ. "How many children of biracial parents can make it in a world controlled by racist ideology?" he asked. "Children born to parents who are of two different
races do not have a snowball's chance in hell of making it in America, especially if the momma was white and the daddy was black. A child born to that union is an unfortunate statistic in a racially polarized society. But, if you use your mind, instead of a lost statistic in a hate-filled universe, you just may end up a law student at Harvard University. ..."

Exactly. As we have our troops stationed in over 70 foreign countries, and we can't see that we're perceived as an imperial power? What an arrogant, pathetic and blind joke. We failed to see the negative consequences of our own behavior, as if the law of cause and effect didn't apply to us.

Right now I'm watching a black-headed grosbeak, a nuthatch and four cardinals pecking at the sunflower seeds I scatter in my back yard. I also have pigeons, blue jays, woodpeckers, chickadees and I can't remember what else. I love to watch them.
No grosbeaks here, but everything else. The damned squirrels have figured out how to get to the suet holder, a good 4 or 5 foot leap.

They're pretty cool. They flock with robins, and they all get tiddly on berries when they get the chance.
They're a bit smaller than robins, with pronounced crests and black around the eyes that looks like a Zorro mask. The getup makes me think of them as punk robins.

I'm a little out of the loop on this Rev. I'd love to meet everyone in person. This is the first place I go when I want to see what the idiots in the press corps are saying. Do these clowns ever stop to think what they are saying? And they babble on and on about Spitizer and that Hooker--if they looked in the mirror they would see that they are no different.
Me too. The MSM is very busily making itself more and more irrelevant as time passes. Hey pundits, y'ever consider what "blowback" REALLY means, especially to the terminally arrogant?
Reality is a mirror--not just for some, for all of us.

Bought a very clever bird feeder from Target that closes all entries with the weight of a squirrel. I had been looking for a decent one, but they were all high-priced. This was $24. The squirrels finally gave up and now catch the seeds on the ground.

Pretty much it in a nutshell.
Any criticism of the Greatest Country in the World (TM) that implies that we are in control of our own destiny and we've used that control to make ourselves an international pariah is to be denounced as treason no matter what the actual facts might show.

I don't have squirrels, but I put out seeds for the birds, mostly finches, morning doves and pidgeons. Then, in the midst of their feasting, a magnificent Cooper's hawk shows up and scares everybody away...

Yes. But they seem to share. Sometimes there are squirrels and birds no more than a foot apart, all happily eating. I did away with the bird feeder because the squirrels won't let the birds near it. Now I just sling four or five cups of sunflower seeds under the pine tree.

the red belly's do have a small patch of red on their belly. It's hard to spot 'cause they're always pressed up against the tree. I have a pair that visit my feeder year around.
