Look, at this point, wouldn't we do better to pay our protection money directly?

They want to steal some money. They budget a big project so as to hide the amount they plan to steal. They spend all the billions, and steal their millions.

Couldn't we just say "Hey! You are planning to steal, what, $25 million? Ok, here's a check for $30 million. Now, cancel that $11 billion boondoggle, and let us use it for some things of actual American benefit."

they are going to steal anyway. they are crooks to the core. why not pay the racketeers seperately, and let America have a chance?

GravatarLord Goldsmith dramatically announced his resignation as attorney general last night, days before he was expected to be ousted when Gordon Brown takes over as prime minister. The departure makes it easier for Mr Brown to look afresh at the role of attorney general, a job which many consider to have inbuilt conflicts of interest.

Mr Brown is considering stripping the attorney of his role in superintending prosecutions and making the Crown Prosecution Service independent. Such a change would mean no government minister would play a part in deciding whether to prosecute in the loans-for-honours affair, distancing the new administration from the embarrassing saga.

As I mentioned on a prior thread, we have some nice dog kennels at Camp X-Ray for you assholes.

GravatarMost voters believe Gordon Brown's government will be neither better nor worse than Tony Blair's, according to a Guardian/ICM poll published today. The vast majority of those surveyed expect to see continuity rather than change when Mr Blair leaves office on the afternoon of June 27. Most - 61% - think that the government's performance under prime minister Brown will be no different.

Only 16% think the government is likely to improve under his leadership. Slightly more, 17%, say it may get worse. Expectations have been limited by the low-key nature of the handover from Mr Blair. Even Labour supporters do not expect to see a difference: only 28% say that they think the government under Mr Brown will be better than before, with a majority thinking that it will stay about the same.

The British arms firm BAE has been given approval by US regulators to go ahead with a £2bn takeover of an American military company. There had been speculation that the deal could have been held up because of bribery allegations levelled at BAE.

But the regulator, the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, has decided against launching a full-scale investigation into BAE's planned purchase of Armor Holdings, which makes armour for the Humvee military vehicle and bulletproof vests.

Governor Pawlenty, while acknowledging that what Mandernach did was wrong, stated that her actions did not rise “to the level of termination.”

The actions of Minnesota Pollution Control Authority commissioner, former 3M environmental manager Cheryl Corrigan, didn’t rise to Pawlenty’s standard of termination either, despite the fact that she suppressed research into the 3M chemicals that would, years later, be found in East Metro wells and local lakes. Corrigan was unceremoniously dismissed four months before Pawlenty’s reelection."

GravatarThe final reckoning

GravatarHmmm...somehow I suspect this isn't really Tena.

Definitely not. It dropped by earlier and threatened to sue us all.

Gravatar. Why did things spin so close to out-of-control during the 70s? One can try to answer this question at many levels. At one level, the answer seems plainly to lie in excessive social experimentation and engineering.

Maybe somebody needs to take an honest look at what the tax codes were like in ALL of the decades preceding the Reagan Revolution and re-assess what might have been unique about the '70s.

And of course the debt from that disastrous 10-year war and the massive oil shock of the embargo had NOTHING to do with our economic troubles in that decade.

Nonetheless, it's clear that median family income from 1980-1992 and 2000-now, when we had the grownups in charge was, wait.....nevermind. It didn't change. Except for when there were Democrats in power.

~
German Communications Workers Begin Nationwide Strike, Really Against Blackstone Hedge Fund
May 11 (EIRNS) - This morning, Telecom workers began strikes involving 10,000 strikers, and protest rallies in five states of Germany: Northrhine Westphalia, Bremen, Lower Saxony, Hesse, and Bavaria. Strike leaders charge the Blackstone locust fund with pulling the strings behind CEO Rene Obermann's drive to brutally cut expenses and increase revenues for shareholders. The Blackstone-Obermann line is suicidal, as the excessive expansion of the mobile phone branch generally has caused the loss of 588,000 Telekom clients during Q1 of this year alone, leading to financial losses which Obermann wants to compensate by the outsourcing of 50,000 jobs to firms of the telecom conglomerate that pay less and force employees to work even longer.

Gravatar Germany has stepped up security in recent days, officials said yesterday, amid intelligence reports indicating a heightened threat of attacks against German troops in Afghanistan and suicide bombings in Germany itself.

It follows the arrest in Pakistan of three suspected Islamic radicals, believed to be part of a group of 10 people trained to carry out suicide bombings, a top law enforcement official said.

Joerg Ziercke, head of the Federal Crime Office, Germany's equivalent to the FBI, gave few details of the arrests. The suspects were young Germans who had converted to Islam and been radicalized, he said. However, a Pakistani official said one was Kazakh.

The radio was on. Vice President Dick Cheney had declared himself part of the legislative branch, and thus immune to some law about the handling of classified info.

Cops lined every overpass on the interstate, which was strange. And all entrances to Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park were blocked. The vice president had made a surprise visit to a reunion of descendants of the 21st Ohio, who fought in the run-up to the Battle of Atlanta. No press, no photos, no word put out to anyone.

“I find it a bit embarrassing that I didn’t know anything about it,” said Scott Johnson, chairman of the Cobb County Republican Party. Then he called Sue Everhart, a Cobb resident and chairman of the state GOP. She didn’t know anything either.

That's always been true, though. Looting and destruction of ancient ruins has been going on for millenia all over the world. Basically, the mass of humanity is comprised of people for whom if there's a buck to be made off of it, the fact that no one else in the history of the world will ever be able to enjoy it again means nothing. Bush has simply corporatized and super-sized the concept, in that the destruction is simply a by-product in the chase for bucks. He's brought corporate rapaciousness and the concomitant inefficiency into the equation.

GravatarSpeaking of Karzai:

Karzai blasts NATO over deaths

"The disproportionate use of force to a situation and the lack of coordination with the Afghan government is causing these casualties," Karzai said.

"You don't fight a terrorist by firing a field gun 30 some kilometers away into a target. That is definitely surely bound to cause civilian casualties."

And the military responds:

"These individuals clearly had weapons and used them against our aircraft as well as shooting rockets against our positions ... This required their removal from the battle-space," Col. Martin P. Schweitzer, a U.S. commander, said in a statement, according to AP.

That will surely win hearts and minds.

GravatarHarold, Steven Jones is a whackjob.

I once asked my father, who installed telephone systems and pulled cable in the World Trade Center if it was possible to run explosives and wiring in the WTC. I explained that there were people out on the intertubes who were saying this was how the WTC was brought down.

He was pretty annoyed with this. He said there was no room in the wiring conduits. He also mentioned that as the buildings aged, more wiring was added as network wiring and additional power was required for computers.

He also pointed out that these conspiracy theorists never considered that when you destabilize a building's structure halfway up, there is a whole top half of the building that has to go somewhere...down. It doesn't require bombs. An airliner loaded with fuel will do just fine.

The people who make these statements about the WTC obviously never pulled cable there. If they had, they'd know how fucking stupid their theories are.

As the U.S. offensive, code-named Phantom Thunder, has been greeted with a week of intensified fighting in areas outside the capital -- areas that the U.S. military has largely left untouched for as long as three years -- the push raised fears from security experts and officers in the field that the new attacks might simply propel the enemy from one area to another where there are not as many U.S. troops.

Uncle Blodge

JR, kerosene and a match

It would be virtually impossible to do, but not because of the core construction, but because the only things that fall in one piece are monoliths - that is, they are organically of a piece, like a tree, or a large slab of stone. Things like buildings that are component parts held together by connections cannot fall in this way, because those connections are engineered to hold the components together when they are positioned in a discrete geometrical relationship to one another. If one of the members at a connection gets too far out of whack from this alignment, the connection fails, and one or more of the connected members falls straight to the ground from the position it was in when the failure occured. Knocking out a building corner might allow a tall building to "list" significantly to one side before disentegrating...maybe as much as 20 degrees from vertical...but at that point the stresses on the connections would be too great to hold the structure together.

Gravatar"CNN claims they are just repeating what the military tells them"

And as far as any analogy with Iraq: We aren't at war with any nation-state right now. Also, we have a lot of people in Baghdad, in case you hadn't noticed, so "levelling" the city would be rather counterproductive.

And we've been laying waste to the nation with DU arms for years now, and have displaced 4 million people from their homes while destroying their ability to access water, food, and electricity.
