"IIRC, the first batch of WTC terrorist thought that's what would happen, they take out the lower core, then the building topples on to another building."
I remember that as well. I also remember hearing it'd take such a large ammount of explosives as to make it next to impossible to actually happen

Carrying on from a couple of threads back:
except death was one of the punishments
Genesis 3:22-24
22 Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of Us, to know good and evil. And now, lest he put out his hand and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever”
23 therefore the Lord God sent him out of the garden of Eden to till the ground from which he was taken.
24 So He drove out the man; and He placed cherubim at the east of the garden of Eden, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life."

If the press had depicted FDR as an accomplished athlete instead of just declining to underline his disability in their photographs, Jonah might have a point.
In Bush's case, the press went out of its way to depict him as "really not that dumb at all", an accomplished businessman and political leader, a resolute man with the right stuff for the war on terror, a fighter jet pilot, a rugged cowboy, a regular guy cutting brush, blah blah blah.
When really what he is is a big zero.

When the British Empire brought trains into India, there was a brief scurry as low caste people cane to work for the railroads.
then those people became hereditary track gang, conductors, engineers, and today India's railroads are staffed by a railroad caste, each to their appropriate job, and social status determined thereby.

It's not a question of how many explosives you have. The issue is that there was no structural member inside the WTC that was sufficiently rigid to act as a lever that could push the top of the building sideways for any appreciable distance once the base had been undermined asymmetrically. Once the the main load-bearing elements of the structure are no longer under almost pure compression, the whole thing just buckles and then falls straight down. It just ain't gonna behave like a tree, no matter what you do to it.

That would have had to include the architects and engineers from back in the early - mid 60s, who designed the buildings to withstand a hit from the largest commercial airliners in use at the time. Nope. "Fell straight down" and "fell straight" are not the same thing. The "falling" piece stayed tilted (perhaps not the same angle all the way until disintegration), but fell straight down.

Also don't forget the bleeding of the economy on military spending. The only effect Reagan had on ending the Soviet Union was that we were able to piss away more money on SDI than the Soviets were, so they ran out of money first.
Problem we have today is Bush is continuing the mad, wasteful spending into massive debt and we're going to collapse because we're not racing anyone, we're just spending ourselves into oblivion for the profit of Bush's cronies.

The part of the building that started moving initially was only 20-25 stories high. It 'tried' to act as a rigid but the rest of the supports failed instantly which is what's being suggested here.
No it didn't right itself. It just translated straight down - disintergrating all the way.
I'm not really thinking clearly enough to put into words what I'd like to say.
However: Once a "thing" starts to fall, the tendency is to fall at the same angle or more pronounced.
I fail to understand how, if the top is falling at an angle, no matter what happens below it that top section should continue to fall at an angle or more pronounced. How is it (no conspiracy theory inducing here) that the top did not fall in a different direction? (just a physics question)

why not take out one corner, making the tower fall onto other buildings?
Uncle Blodge
I'd suspect that would be very, very hard to do, because to the core construction.
JR, kerosene and a match
It would be virtually impossible to do, but not because of the core construction, but because the only things that fall in one piece are monoliths - that is, they are organically of a piece, like a tree, or a large slab of stone. Things like buildings that are component parts held together by connections cannot fall in this way, because those connections are engineered to hold the components together when they are positioned in a discrete geometrical relationship to one another. If one of the members at a connection gets too far out of whack from this alignment, the connection fails because gravity is now exerting different pressures upon it than it was designed to handle, and one or more of the connected members falls straight to the ground from the position it was in when the failure occured. Knocking out a building corner might allow a tall building to "list" significantly to one side before completely disentegrating...maybe as much as 20 degrees from vertical...but at that point the stresses on the connections would be too great to hold the structure together.

OK quick answer. It began to rotate (again as an approximation of a rigid body) briefly (milliseconds) pivoting around the corner or wall that had yet to fail, enough to cause the visible tilt indicated by the antenna. Once the motion began it caused the whole thing to let go.
This all happened in a small fraction of a second.

I get that the top was a "monolith". But that being said, how can that "listing" section become "reattached" to the rest of the structure once the motion is activated? It should have then become two separate pieces. Thus having two different trajectories.

The top is not a monolith. The top is comprised of structural members held together with connections that might hold together momentarily as lateral stresses greater than they were designed to withstand are applied, but by the time the section of the building is even 20 degrees off vertical, those connections will fail and the component parts they held together will fall from the spot they were in at the moment of failure, straight to the ground.

It's not a big mystery, really. Let's say the the initial failure was the west side of the 5th-from-top floor, so the antenna lists as part of that floor collapses. But the next-down floor retards the collapse, providing temporary stabilization until the rest of the upper tower's weight causes the other sides to buckle. When all of the weight of the upper part of the tower presses down, the antenna "rights itself" just as the next floor fails. Because of the unique design of the WTC towers (a point people too often fail to grasp), the towers can't support their own weight and thus the pancaking we saw.
There's no secret plot to rig it for collapse, it was designed in such a way that as soon as one floor collapsed what happened was inevitable. WTC7, on the other hand, was a standard steel girder construction and didn't come down by itself...

This was apparent back in the George McGovern era where McGovern's actual record as a medal winning war hero who survived one of the most dangerous theatres of WWII was considered nothing compared to Nixon's fearful, jittery, pretence at being tough. Simpler.
Clinton in public opinion is what the MSM makes Clinton in public opinion. The MSM makes Clinton what the Washington elite want them to make him. Clinton was an Arkansas governor, not a Washington insider. He wasn't 4th generation Washington powermonger, wasn't part of their prep schools, wasn't tied to their community. In short, he was a Mongol emperor amongst the native Chinese eunuchs of the Forbidden City. So the Washington elite told the MSM to savage Clinton. And the fact that Clinton was Democratic was convenient for other MSM projects, like making Rush a media clown, er, 'hero'.
"He came in and trashed the house, and it's not his house"
The republics hated Clinton because they were scared to death of him. He was smarter and a hell of a lot savvier than any of them and the only way they had to deal with him was to smear him.
I see the same thing with John Edwards.

Well, I guess the savings is more like $50, since the eBay one (orange) has $17 shipping, whereas the other (grey) has free shipping.
All I know is, the outfit that was running the orange-trimmed ones a couple of days ago didn't get a bid on it at $149.99, so I think I could get the re-listed one for that.

Uncle Blodge, Urban Teacher | 06.23.07 - 12:29 pm | #
That's a good question. I think it's more tied to social/cultural unease than any policies. Clinton was ready to fuck over the poor with "welfare reform", but he was obviously at home and comfortable with non-lace-curtain blacks and with white trash and that maybe what drove them so nuts.

But that being said, how can that "listing" section become "reattached" to the rest of the structure once the motion is activated? It should have then become two separate pieces. Thus having two different trajectories.
Well, let me see if I can explain. 1) the top was no more a monolith than anything else, it only looks monolithic from far enough away.
2) They weren't "re-attached. The top section just happened to have a trajectory through the rest of the building, which, perforce, acquired a trajectory consistent with gravity and impact physics.

I've never understood the objection to conspiracy theories. Unless there is a recording or witnesses to a conspiracy you usually have to develop theories of how they operate in order to then go on and prove a conspiracy happened. The problem isn't the theories, it's answers without evidence that is where it falls down.

Not to mention Bush was at 30% or thereabouts for over a year before the MSM caught on that he really, wasn't, you know, all that popular.
I don't think the evidence of a causal link between MSM treatment of politicans, and the public perception of politicians, really exists. Except as it makes non-political junkies sick of the whole mess and declare a plague on all their houses.

True; but the good thing about a media consistently pushing a meme (from the view of thast meme's suporters) is that the individual who does not buy it feels isolated in not buying it. Further, if that one starts saying they don't buy it, they go unnoted in the roar. (Not to mention that others who may also tend that way get intimidated by the 'fact' that 'everyone' believes it.)
And the visceral hatred, i think, was pre-existing. It is the hate and anger and frustration of they guy who is not doing as well as he thinks he ought, is not getting what he wants, is finding himself less and less secure with every year - and he finds the 700 Club, and Rush and Newt and so on to tell him "It's all because of those Godless evil libbrals".
60 years ago it was "Godless evil Jews." 150 years ago 'Godless Irish immigrants". And so on.
the hate pre-exists. The MSM directs it towards a target, and (usually) away from the cause.

I had several theories about flight 93 the one that chased in the farm land.
These were based on extensive reading from the cooperative research site that posted a lot of the first reports based on eye witnessed before a narrative could be constructed. And I based my thought that there was a problem with the assigned narrative to hard evidence that could not be faked, (seismic records) and the timeline that was clearly off by a couple of minutes.
Base on this I thought that there was something hinky. I wasn't sure what it was, but it appeared that there were problems with the official story and time line. I thought maybe it was shot down, but they didn't want to say that and would rather do the "Brave passengers save the day."
Year later they had the actual audio tapes from the group that was in charge of the entire response. You see just how unprepared they were and how poorly they responded. After that I didn't believe that they were shot down, but of course I still didn't have anyone explain why the timeline problems with the seismic data (when the plane crashed the time of the crash was recorded around the world as an event like an earthquake.)

Possibly, the hatred of clinton is obvious and I'm being deceived by my anger at Clinton for his gross betrayal of the people who elected him. Despite that, Clinton really was the poor kid from the trailer park who made good on hard work and talent. And any genuine virtue sets off the rage.

If you have a chance do read that Vanity Fair article. I don't remember when it came out but it was really really interesting. Also you know that the group that usually exams all the plane crashes didn't examine these. (The flight that went into the pentagon either) And THAT group is KNOWN for it's thoroughness. The timeline that I'm discussing is from the tapes of the flights black box. When it crashed and what was recorded didn't match when the seismic data said it crashed (or approx 3 minutes off) Now we also know that they didn't let the public hear that and they had a lame ass excuse for why it wasn't available.
I agree, the covering up of documents is one of the hugest methods that the Bush admin uses to their advantage.
"National Security!" they scream.
Executive Privilege!
But I do think that a good scientific exam of the plane crash in the field would have had more info had it been done by the group who always cover plane crashes.

Sounds like we're saying rather the same thing with different emphases..... Clinton the outsider bringing in outsiders into "their" little world-rulling Versailles village of DC.
the fact that the outsiders he brought in could look rather like the DC elite's houseboys and caddies would have been extra fuel for the fire, i agree.
But it's the fact that this guy is coming in and thinking he's the President just because the unwashed-outside-the-Beltway voted for him that i see as the root cause.

(when the plane crashed the time of the crash was recorded around the world as an event like an earthquake.)
Spocko
Flight 93 had a very weak seismic signal. I doubt it registered as an earthquake worldwide.
The WTC collapse registered as a local 2.1 & 2.3 quakes, and did not register worldwide, and 93 piling in couldn't have generated more energy than that.

For me, the single most dubious event of 9/11 is when the air traffic controller supervisor took all of the audio tapes and broke them up and distributed the pieces in multiple waste bins.

NTodd wrote that true believers of conspiracy theories hold themselves as smarter. That's true, but there can also be an element of self-loathing. For example, the Nazis big conspiracy theory, which claimed an inferior people was consistantly out smarting the master race.

The conspiracy theories about WTC are annoying because they are so pointless - what difference would it make if Bush was a criminal conspirator on top of being criminally negligent? The voting conspiracy is more tolerable because it might reveal weak points where we could interfere with ongoing vote fraud.

I suggested they stop photographing Bush above the neck. Seems fair considering...

Like others, I'm often puzzled when people engage Andrew Sullivan seriously (as opposed to making fun of him). He's really just a stupid, stupid man.
