GravatarHRC will have to win by blowouts in ALL the remaining primaries to overtake Obama's lead in the popular vote.
mrs. ibrahim al-jafaari | 03.22.08 - 12:55 am | #

The popular vote means shit. That not the basis of winning primaries and its not the basis of winning the GE. Its just another Mark Penn/hrc moving the goal posts. It's only a measure of who piled up more votes in a few big states.

yup. This has been another edition of ...

GravatarHDNetMovies has The Life Aquatic followed by Ghostbusters and we can't get a clean signal on that channel.

Every other channel works but that one.

I'm so disappointed.

Gravatarwell, the "popular vote" thing was brought up by Quentin, with the false HRC/Penn spin that she's winning it.

unfortunately for her, she isn't. at least not at this point. he has more deleagtes, he has won more contests, and he leads in the popular vote.

Left Coaster has a darn good analysis of popular votes, sliced and diced a few different ways.

GravatarThe popular vote means shit

Don't worry. The same candidate will win the majority of the popular vote, the most states, and the most delegates.

And then the most Supers, too.

GravatarWell, Elias proves that one again, Atrios has the stupidest trolls on the internets.

I really feel bad for someone who's judgement is so clouded by their hatred of HRC that they would become, in essence, a racism-denier. That's pretty pathetic.

GravatarBefore I go,

I still like the Howard Hawks/James Arness Thing better, even tho it's in black and white.

I like that scene where, for no apparent reason, Margaret Sheridan has Kenneth Tobey tied up in a chair.

And they both seem to like it.

The Kraken Wakes, by John Wyndham, who also wrote The Day of The Triffids. It was published in this country under the title Out Of The Deeps. And it's pretty intelligent considering it was written in the early 50s. Aliens land on earth but since they're used to a high pressure environment they set up shop in the deepest parts of the oceans, where they then trigger...global warming.

Heh.

Hard to say! It's been about twnety years since I watched it, and I've gone back and forth on Tarkovsky over the years. I did like a lot of stuff about it, but I'd have to watch it again to have any idea of how I feel now.

No one will believe us. They'll take one look at him and say, "There's no way he's under 80."

GravatarI say we play dirty, and reveal that McCain is 71 years old.

I say we take a gazillion photos of his wattles and goiter.

GravatarIm a lurker and I hardly post. But today after hearing Bill Clinton, I posted that I thought he was a traitor. I got called an A-hole by Terry C.

I fought with republicans for years how great Bill was for the economy, the millions of jobs created and I didn't think the BJ was a big deal.
I even thought at the time Bill was great at preventing the Neocons from Pressuring him into a war in the MiddleEast after the 1993 WTC bombing.

But what they are doing now is disgusting. Dem Party first, yourself 2nd is my motto.

When are they going to wake up and see that this over. The only way to win is the dirty way and my country has been dirtied for almost 8 years and I am sick of it!

GravatarAnd I'm happy to stand by the rules, like the one stripping MI and FL of delegates that Ickes voted for.
MikeJ

great. So if Obama tries to steal the over the top for Hilary vote from the Super-delegates by claiming more popular and delegate votes, we can count on your support in putting down any "violation of the rules" insurection? right?

GravatarChild of a drunk, I meant to say.

Gravatar'night, Goddess - thanks for the threads, Hope you have a sweet-dream-filled night.

Last freebie - google works for you, too. Read the articles. The Obama camp has a "Democrat for a Day" tactic they have employed.

If the rules allow it, there's nothing wrong with it. But it's *there*.
-

Gravatarsallyh-

It sounds as if you were stoic enough to make it through. My thoughts are with you. (Stoicism has a lot to say for itself.)

GravatarHuh? How would Obama "steal" vote if Clinton gets 65% of the remaining delegates and 70% of the remaining super without losing any?

If she can do that, she wins.

GravatarIm a lurker and I hardly post. But today after hearing Bill Clinton, I posted that I thought he was a traitor. I got called an A-hole by Terry C.

I'm sorry.

I agree with you. I defended Clinton for years, but I have to admit that he's an asshole.

Gravatarsimply has to disengage. Not in the sense of not caring, obviously, but in the sense of realizing where her power ends.

as 4LG noted, not easy to do. It can rip you apart.

GravatarIm a lurker and I hardly post. But today after hearing Bill Clinton, I posted that I thought he was a traitor. I got called an A-hole by Terry C.

I feel your pain. Earlier today, I was sitting in a restaurant, and the people at the table next to me were talking about how Obama is a great candidate, blah blah blah.

I stood up and said, "You people are completely full of shit. He's a monster of vanity, and he's hopelessly inexperienced. Wake the fuck up already."

They told me to fuck off and mind my own business. I don't know what this world is coming to.

True enough. But consider the alternative. The drunk's MO, for instance, is often to make you feel responsible for whatever happens to him or her. A lot of times, all micromanaging things does is make it worse for the other person and for yourself.

GravatarI don't know what this world is coming to.

I saw a couple of suburban-type moms with some girls driving in a car with an "Obama" bumpersticker on it.

I honked and waved. Fellow Democrats and all...

GravatarWe've all gone MAD!!

My timing may stink terribly but there is it.

I'll add my best wishes, again, too.

GravatarTrue enough. But consider the alternative. The drunk's MO, for instance, is often to make you feel responsible for whatever happens to him or her. A lot of times, all micromanaging things does is make it worse for the other person and for yourself.

In my case, the break was made easier by admitting to myself that my father was an asshole and it had nothing to do with him being a drunk.

GravatarMy rant

Terry C is one person, doesn't speak for all. She must type 120wpm.

Bill's actions throughout this campaign have tarnished his both his personal standing, as well as "the ex-presidency." imho. too bad. icky poo poo.

Doesn't this just suck? All those years of defending him from the crazies. Now he is one of the crazies. And he won't - shut - up.

And it's happening a lot - I think a lot of Hillary people have internalized the madness.

Phila, Race Traitor

I know it. It's just horrible, though, like watching a slo-mo train wreck and knowing there's nothing you can do about it. It is most certainly worlds more difficult for a parent than for a child because we are supposed to proptect our children. Leaving behind a parent who won't help themself is most definitely hard, but the pain tends to come a bit later - at least in my experience. At the time, when you're in the middle of it, a lot of us resent the hell out of our parent-drunks.

Gravatar"increasingly disturbed by the criticisms and racial tones and then impressed with Obama and what the governor called his courageous race speech this week. And that clinched it for Richardson.

What we didn't see or hear was last night's phone conversation when Richardson made the courtesy call to Clinton to inform her she was not his choice. Doesn't sound like that went too friendly. "It was a painful conversation for me that I had with Sen. Clinton last night," Richardson told CNN's John King today.

King bored in, saying he'd heard from others that such conversations with the Clintons could actually be downright unpleasant. "Well," Richardson added, "let's say it was a difficult conversation." That leaves a good deal to the imagination about what might have been said about ingratitude."

GravatarObama Fever in Europe
By Katrin Bennhold

If Renaud Bombard, the head of the French publishing house Presses de la Cité, had planned the timing of Senator Barack Obama’s much celebrated speech on race and religion himself, he could hardly have done better.
On Thursday, two days after a speech that is being widely read and viewed in Europe, Presses de la Cité released the French translation of Mr. Obama’s best-selling memoir, “Dreams From my Father.” It appeared in German bookstores the same day, after being published in Italy last November.

“The hype surrounding his speech this week was quite something,” Mr. Bombard said in a telephone interview on Thursday. “Obviously that’s great news for the book.”
The fact that a black man may become the Democratic presidential candidate has intrigued Europeans at a time when such a prospect still seems far off in most countries on the Continent.
Mr. Bombard of Presses de la Cité is betting that the book will sell well. He has printed an initial 9,000 copies and does not exclude a second edition, especially if Mr. Obama wins the nomination.
Mr. Obama’s other book, “The Audacity of Hope

Gravatarellroon, same goes. XXOO.

GravatarBarack Obama's campaign, after a week of largely playing defense over his spiritual mentor's sermons, is going on the offense with a vengeance this morning with a memo accusing Hillary Clinton of "a history of misleading voters."

The memo cites a new Gallup poll in which 53 percent of Americans say Clinton is not trustworthy -- 63 percent for Obama and 67 percent for presumptive Republican nominee John McCain -- and argues that such a low honesty score makes Clinton unelectable in the fall.

"After eight years of an untrustworthy President, can we really expect that a candidate who is viewed as so much more dishonest than McCain will somehow be able to beat him?" the memo asks.

Then, the memo goes on to cite Clinton's newly released schedules as first lady to assert that they cast grave doubt on her claims of experience and accomplishment on family leave, foreign policy, and other issues. The memo also accuses Clinton of dishonesty on the North American Free Trade Agreement, of disingenuousness on the disputed Florida and Michigan primaries, and of abetting a false rumor that Obama is Muslim during a recent "60 Minutes" interview.

GravatarOk, I'm back. What do I think of the fairy tale that Obama might be ahead in popular vote, states won, and delegates won and then the superdelegates come in and hand it to Hillary? About the same as I think about giant lizards influencing the convention. It's just not gonna happen.

To address the lie about "changing the rules" for supers, nobody has suggested it. Obama has pointed out to supers that if they thwart the will of the people, most of them will have to go home and let those people vote against them. That's life. I've not hear anybody suggest that supers would be forced to ignore the will of the voters, merely that they do so at their own peril.

Hey SP!

Yeah, still snowing - last gasps of a storm that was predicted as recently as yesterday to be 3" to 6" - now widespread 12" plus.

I'd rather deal with snow than a flooded basement, though.

GravatarIs it unusual for your basement to flood inb the spring, or is it somewhat regular every few springs?

GravatarObama has pointed out to supers that if they thwart the will of the people, most of them will have to go home and let those people vote against them. That's life. gee, what if it were Hilary ? This has been another edition of ...

GravatarMark Penn is REALLY desperate - I say he's the one pushing HRC to fight 'til death -

Because if he loses, he'll never manage another campaign again. His time has come and is going.

GravatarOh, the flooding is fairly frequent. We're on low ground across from a stream with a hill behind us. When we get lots of rain the water pours down hill and springs up all over the place and passes through our basement on its way to the stream.

Usually a sump pump keeps ahead of it, but if it comes too fast or if the ground is frozen or already saturated, it can be a mess down there. We just went out and bought an auxiliary pump to try and keep up.
.

Gravatargee, what if it were Hilary

I'm all for the supers reflecting the will of the voters, even if the voters don't pick my personal first choice.

Happily, I don't think that will be an issue this time.

GravatarI really want Obama to be the nominee. Everyone seems to think it's pretty much six of one/ half dozen of another since their positions on policy are so similar.

But their philosophies of government are so different; Obama really wants to activate voters and keep them involved in the decision making/oversight process. I'd love to see government institutions reformed to accommodate that.
.

Hey, how crazy is that thread over at Ezra's?

Those fuckers really ARE going to burn down the house with all of us inside it.

GravatarI may be simplifying it a bit, but I think a core of HRC support is people who see her as having earned her way - campaigning from the 2004 election onward, and being a supporter (financially and otherwise) of party-heirarchy-approved Dems.

There's also the whole "It's WAY past due for a woman to be president" philosophy, which - were it any other year, I'd say she absolutely earned her place.

BUT - since Obama's support came to fruition in Iowa, she and her campaign team (primarily a lot of establishment Dems) are acting as though they are entitiled to the office. And the tactics they've employed are growing incresingly desperate.

We've had enough of paranoid presidents.

Gravatar

I almost owed you a COke.

GravatarI'd say she absolutely earned her place.

The Democratic party has always had a hard time with "it's my turn now" candidates. That's how the Republicans do everything, and it all remains nice and orderly and everybody stands in line.

I prefer the Democratic method.

GravatarI may be simplifying it a bit, but I think a core of HRC support is people who see her as having earned her way - campaigning from the 2004 election onward, and being a supporter (financially and otherwise) of party-heirarchy-approved Dems.

I just think that's bogus.

It's the fucking presidency, not a prize in a cracker jack box you give away for year's served.

There's no "earning" it.

It's not the party's decision- it's the voter's decision. We've decided on someone else. I don't give a fuck that SHE thinks she's the best for the job. That's nice, but it's not her FUCKING DECISION. It's ours.

(not yelling at you, I'm just completely frustrated at these assholes who are gleefully cheering for the Terry McAulliffes of the world to tighten their hold on the party)

GravatarFLG, I don't think the Republicans ever really wanted Bob Dole, but it was his turn. There are elements of the Democratic party that think we should act like Republicans.

GravatarTerry McAullife and Mark Penn hate the idea of a world where no one needs them to shake their money tree.

Fucking leeches on a boil on the body politic, both of those fuckers.

Gravatar4lg: people are just pissed now. some will come to their senses, some won't.

i still feel bad about not voting for hrc if she wins the nomination, especially since i was conflicted up until right after the LA debate. i haven't missed an election since 1980. but there are some things that are over the line for me.

Gravatar(not yelling at you, I'm just completely frustrated at these assholes who are gleefully cheering for the Terry McAulliffes of the world to tighten their hold on the party)

Thanks for the qualifier - we're both in agreement.

GravatarFLG, I don't think the Republicans ever really wanted Bob Dole, but it was his turn. There are elements of the Democratic party that think we should act like Republicans.

They should go be fucking republicans then.

Hillary hasn't worked her way up. She was freaking first lady. Then the party handed her a senate seat. And gave her the committee assignments to bolster her foreign policy "experience."

Now they want to give her the presidency.

Fuck them.

Gravatarflg...did you see this at kos?

"But Mr. Richardson stopped returning Mr. Clinton’s calls days ago, Mr. Clinton’s aides said. And as of Friday, Mr. Richardson said, he had yet to pick up the phone to tell Mr. Clinton of his decision.

The reaction of some of Mr. Clinton’s allies suggests that might have been a wise decision. "An act of betrayal," said James Carville, an adviser to Mrs. Clinton and a friend of Mr. Clinton.

"Mr. Richardson’s endorsement came right around the anniversary of the day when Judas sold out for 30 pieces of silver, so I think the timing is appropriate, if ironic," Mr. Carville said, referring to Holy Week."

GravatarI read the Mother Jones piece. That fellowship is really scary, but I'm not all that disturbed that Clinton has attached herself to it.

She definitely sees "experience" as meaning knowing and understanding the inner workings and networkings of the government.

I think she's the kind of politician who believes you have to understand the way things work before you can pull the strings to get things done . . . a lot like Cheney and Rumsfeld, actually, but with more worthy goals in mind.

GravatarThanks for the qualifier - we're both in agreement.

Oh, I know we are, I'm just venting.

Reading that thread over at Ezra's, combined with those emails Josh published have really sent me over the edge.

Once again the dems are going to fuck it up. I'm really pissed about it too.

GravatarI'm really disturbed that there are supposed HRC supporters that have gone on-record saying they would vote McBush or not vote at all rather than vote Obama.

Personality cults are toxic to politics.

Gravatarjdw. No, that's appalling.

I happen to know one of the super delegates in texas (only slightly, he's a friend of a friend)

He committed to Clinton a year ago and desperately wants to break his commitment, but he thinks the Clintons will fuck him permanently if he does.

I'm sure there's a lot of that going on.

Gravatar"Hillary hasn't worked her way up."

see, i don't think that's fair. she's got a long record of public service, and she's qualified. what i resent is this 'obama can't wait his turn' shit that sounds suspiciusly like 'get in the back of the bus'.

the other thing that bothers me is bill campaigning for her 24/7.

GravatarI'm really disturbed that there are supposed HRC supporters that have gone on-record saying they would vote McBush or not vote at all rather than vote Obama.

The spite is unbelievable.

Though I have to say that I'm angry enough to want to record a no vote if she wins the nom and does not campaign in my state.

GravatarTimothy Egan: Donner Party Democrats

GravatarHillary deserves an opportunity to make her pitch to the voters. She's done it. The voters prefer Obama. Clinton doesn't deserve the nom just because she's a hosted a White House tea or two.

Gravatar"He committed to Clinton a year ago and desperately wants to break his commitment, but he thinks the Clintons will fuck him permanently if he does."

thems the breaks. it's funny about how people are ragging on richardson, but i know a rep who supported hrc, and her distrct went 70% obama. she'll stick with her out of loyalty, but it may cost her a primary challenge.

Gravatarsee, i don't think that's fair. she's got a long record of public service, and she's qualified.

A big stretch of that "public service" was spent being a corporate lawyer.

I'm not saying she's evil. But her claim to be the most qualified doesn't hold up in my eyes.

And then there's her war vote. Don't get me started on that.

GravatarIt's hard for me to fathom, really. A couple of months ago it was "We have two really excellent candidates, I'll support either one." And now?

GravatarI'm sure there's a lot of that going on.
fourlegsgood, stingrayer

I have the same sense of things. I figure a lot of supers committed to Clinton because they knew they'd be screwed if she won and they hadn't. I don't think they're as worried about retaliations from Obama. If he ends up winning they'll still be okay.
.

Gravatarthems the breaks. it's funny about how people are ragging on richardson, but i know a rep who supported hrc, and her distrct went 70% obama. she'll stick with her out of loyalty, but it may cost her a primary challenge.

In my state we desperately need the national party to put resources in here. We need a ticket that has coattails.

IMHO, reps here (and he's a party type guy) need to be looking at what's best for the state, and not personal loyalty.

Gravatar"I'm really disturbed that there are supposed HRC supporters that have gone on-record saying they would vote McBush or not vote at all rather than vote Obama."

that goes both ways. i think the percentages have gone up as things got nasty, which is another reason why this shouldn't drag on.

GravatarIt's hard for me to fathom, really. A couple of months ago it was "We have two really excellent candidates, I'll support either one." And now?

I was that way for a long time.

I went with him because of the youth vote thing his commitment to the 50 state strategy.

But goddamn. She's been working overtime to make me hate her. And she's succeeded.

GravatarThe Clinton Camp has this whole La Cosa Nostra/Sopranos thing going -- Mark Penn HAD to come out and say something snotty and dismissive about Richardson endorsing Obama. even Bill is at it again with his remark that anything Hill and Huggy don't want to talk about is "intrud(ing) on our politics.

Gravatar
In my state we desperately need the national party to put resources in here. We need a ticket that has coattails.

Hell, Washington pretty reliably goes Democratic, but we need coattails here too. Remember the Gov race a few years ago, that we won by a coupla hundred votes?

We can't afford a presidental candidate that spends September in Florida, October in Ohio, and November sitting at home as a loser.

Gravatarthat goes both ways. i think the percentages have gone up as things got nasty, which is another reason why this shouldn't drag on.

Agreed.

I hope Richardson is the first in an avalanche of superdelegates that decide to act like grownups.

Gravatar"But her claim to be the most qualified doesn't hold up in my eyes."

i agree. i think they are pretty equal in terms of experience....some of the stuff she claims is, ahem, hyped. check this:

Yep, so dangerous she took a comic and a guitar player AND her teenaged daughter with her.

Gravatar"I went with him because of the youth vote thing his commitment to the 50 state strategy."

for me things started going downhill with bill in sc, and it's been downhill since. i gotta say that i hate them both now, and regret my votes for bc and giving money to hrc for her senate run.

GravatarWhat it comes down to is which candidate do you see as more likely to work with the other candidate in a general election - even if it isn't a "unity ticket?"

I see Obama telling his supporters that Dems will need to get out and vote - not just for the top od the ticket, but for all the local and state races so that the GOP will be as endangered as the Snail Darter.

I see HRC - and especially her team -as ruminating over a fruit bowl of bitter lemons, rotten tomatoes and sour grapes.

That's not growing the party. Process IS just as important as results.

GravatarWord. Portlanders are rarely effusive if not juiced, but yesterday, the crowd was warm and seemed to want to buoy Obama's spirits. Man, I wanted to be there when I saw them!

GravatarFuck, we've got young earthers in both the lege and on the state textbook and education boards.

I don't honestly think any dem will carry Texas this year. But the right candidate could make WA a blowout.

The right candidate will also carry our message into Texas, even if we can't win it. And in four years we'll do it again and pick up a few more votes. And four years after that pick up more again.

There's a joke. An old bull and a young bull stand at the top of a hill, gazing at the herd of cows. The young bull sez, "let's run down there and fuck us a cow!" The old bull sez, "let's walk down and fuck ALL those cows".

Campaigning in Texas isn't about winning this election. It's about winning ALL the elections.

GravatarObama:

i should have seen the smearing coming, but i didn't dream they'd sink to gop-level attacks and aid and abet mccain. that's a sin i can't forgive.

She's already said enough glowing things about McCain's experience for a month of campaign ads in the general elections - asking her if she really feels that way, or is she yet another Democratic flip-flopper.

Giving ammo to the enemy wasn't a smart stategy in Iraq. It sure ain't any smarter in a presidential campaign.

GravatarThe 50 state strategy is a way to make sure that eventually the republican party has the same relevance as the whigs.

GravatarSince 5w30 is factually-challenged, let me try and make it aware that Florida was disenfranchised BY ITS REPUBLICAN LEGISLATURE, which delivered a big "fuck y'all" to the Dems by moving the primary up.

Democracy is but a game to them. They deserve to be sent back to their SimCity games where they can't harm REAL people.

GravatarGodDamnAmerica Obama able to cower fellow idiot Dimocrats with implied racism. They're guilty, weak and ultra sensitive to the charge.

Because Catholics weren't welcome in the other ones.

GravatarDimocrat Convention, Denver in August:

...hilarity off the charts!...

GravatarMorning peeps.

Gravatarheehee.

At the pot luck last night it was decided that we would launch a counter insurgency to the group that tried to take over at the Thursday owner's meeting. This is getting to be quite amusing.

We're not real fond of Puritans.

GravatarFirst time I ever got in trouble teaching was for On Plymouth Plantation: there's a chapter where they catch a guy for bestiality and they parade every animal in the settlement in front of him to see which ones he'd done. I called him a turkey fucker.

GravatarI cannot envision congress with a bird.

GravatarI know! That's why it stayed with me. Bizarre.

They killed him, and all the poor animals, which always seemed kind of unfair to me. But theocracy's a pretty shitty method of government.

GravatarThe book I'm reading with Moe is quite interesting in laying out the history of South Mountain and how it got to be so isolated. Basically, the Baptists took over the valley and the mountain people had a hard time getting to church on Sundays so were automatically considered godless and shunned for sinning. Each social demographic in the area needed someone to whom the could feel superior and the mountain people became the bottom. It went so far that anyone from the valley who married a mountain person lost any connection to polite society. The settlers, of course, were all people running away from the stratified social atomosphere in New England.

GravatarI keep thinking about the Church Huggy Bear claims to belong to: North Phoenix Baptist. GWPDA swears
the hideous ice-cream pastel modernist bastard monstrosity I remember has been torn down and replaced -- bit few places have ever looked less sacred, to me.

GravatarI still can't get over Tweety feeling-up Ellen, her replaying it in excruciating detail, and his living thru it. Blows my mind.

Gravatarturkey fucker

Please tell me that the trouble wasn't at college level, perhaps you said it front of eigth graders or something?

GravatarNah, it was a college class. I dunno; I thought it was kind of funny.

Got their attention, I'll tell you that. And getting and keeping teenagers' attention isn't all that easy with Puritan literature.

GravatarMorning, early riser rational people.

GravatarMay be hard to get their attention but it is so important that we all have a common font of knowledge.

GravatarMorning, early riser rational people

I'm actually late this morning.

I'm shocked even.

GravatarYou guys can't seem to catch a weather break up there.

GravatarHeh, BD...are you snowed in (again)?

GravatarMornin', gang. At least five inches of snow on the ground, and I guess more coming. How are you doin'?

GravatarHeh, BD...are you snowed in (again)?

Yes ma'am. Probally close to 8" on the ground.

I'm. So. Thrilled.

GravatarI think when I went to college orientation the prof address us warned us that we were going to hear and see things that would blow our little high school minds, and we'd be cheerfully doing those things before the first semester was over. I think everybody who ever heard this guy warn them of the evils of college life wound up going there as quickly as they could.

GravatarBD, I hope you don't have anything you have to do today. Me, I'm stayin' riiiiiight here.

GravatarWell, BD, I just hope that was your last winter storm for this year.

GravatarWell, the structure of high school education makes a lot of kids hate literature. Sometimes you can fight it; sometimes you can't.

But these are the texts at the base of the nation, as much as the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.

GravatarBD, I hope you don't have anything you have to do today. Me, I'm stayin' riiiiiight here

Well, the wife and I had this nifty idea of taking the 5th wheel up to my fishing spot, but...

GravatarWell, BD, I just hope that was your last winter storm for this year

Diane - we missed the last 2 that hit filk in A-squared.

I figured it was (almost) over, but I never had held my breath living in Michigan.

GravatarI finally allowed my daughter to leave high school and start college early when she got an 80% on a literature test cause she didn't know the color of Holden's shoes or something. She really loved Catcher in the Rye and I could see something like that ruining the joy she took in reading. Like somehow if she didn't remember inconsequential facts she wasn't reading the correct way.

GravatarAnne used to say that the drop-dead date was April 18, that she had never experienced any snow or ice past that date. Then a few years ago we got an ice storm on the 20th, and she boggled. Truly, you can't trust Michigan.

GravatarRecord daily maximum snowfall set at Grand Rapids...

a record snowfall of 6.6 inches was set at Grand Rapids
yesterday. This breaks the old record of 6.3 set in 1983.

The season snowfall at Grand Rapids is now 105.1 inches. That puts
this 2007/2008 season in second place for the snowiest on record.
That ecplisped the 104.7 inches for the 1958/1959 season that was
second place. The snowiest season on record is 132.0 inches that
fell during the 1951/1952 winter season

Boy, Vicki sure is lucky isn't she?

GravatarAtrios is gonna have to answer for my Hulu addiction.

GravatarInteresting: the NYT has an editorial castigating French President Nicolas Sarkozy for his odd behavior the day after Sarkozy announced a reduction in French nuclear warheads with a challenge to the other nuclear powers to do likewise.

GravatarI remember m.i.l. telling me you can put out the annuals till Memorial Day. She lived in Pittsburgh. Here they're already planted and the trees are beginning to bud. Noice. Gonna be in the high forties and fifties for the next five days.

GravatarBoy, Vicki sure is lucky isn't she?

Did she check in last night? She stayed at work until the cops told her to go home last night.

GravatarI've found that robot Scrab practice seems to have improved my ability to quickly jumble letters into words in my head -- but I still hate the robot.

GravatarI noted some small bud formation on my cherry tree yesterday.

I hope it doesn't fuck up the fruiting process.

GravatarDid she check in last night? She stayed at work until the cops told her to go home last night

Molly - only took her 50 minutes to drive home that 8 miles last night.

E fucking gads.

GravatarHere, Mother's Day is the BIG Nursery Day. Hanging Baskets and Color pots are grown to be at their peak for giving that day.

Gravatarqlª -- I was lucky. I started reading early, and my parents got me annotated editions of classics, e.g., Verne, Doyle, the Paul Bunyan stories, things like that. I also had (and still have) D'Aulaires Book of Greek Myths. Between that and the school library, I got a love of books instilled in me before English class could grind it out.

GravatarShouldn't, unless a freeze catches the blossoms in flower. Trees go thru this stuff all the time.

GravatarShouldn't, unless a freeze catches the blossoms in flower. Trees go thru this stuff all the time.

Seems a few years back, it went thru one of these cycles, plantsman. I was quite worried to say the least. (I love cherries, pie, cobbler, etc)

Funny, that was one of the best years I ever had for cherries.

Gravatarthe fundy church came by and left leaflets inviting us to Easter Services again

I'd have to show up on Easter, and make a complete ass of myself - just for general principle.

GravatarBD -- kewl. Y'know what happened? I read "last night" as "that night", thought you guys had been discussing some other snow before I got here, and... well, some days I cannot brain, I has the dumb.

GravatarReading "Sinners In the Hands of An Angry God" my freshman year in college really clarified a few things for me.

GravatarMan, I loved sour cherry pie! So tasty. Miss it

You and me both. I don't miss it (thankfully) and, I will be sure to eat some for you come Wimbeldon time (usually I'm picking, and the wife /kid are pitting during Wimbeldon).

GravatarOh. It's when they have the Xian Rock service outside starting before 9 on Sunday with amplifiers I really wanna scream!

Gravatarhey peeps

Gravatarsome days I cannot brain, I has the dumb

Hey! I have those also!!!!

And, I hate them.

Gravatarfilk-she was reading before she entered kindergarten and claims she doesn't remember when she learned how so must have been born with the knowledge. Heh. I don't think they could have ground it out but they sure as heck seemed like they were trying. To be fair, the English teacher in the 11th grade class was still reading books aloud to the class cause the majority of students just wouldn't take the books home and read them themselves. And this was a Regents class.

Gravatarfilk,
did you get the email about lunch next Saturday?

GravatarLet 'em go, BD. My mom and I had one of our awkward moments yesterday on the phone, when she remembered that I don't celebrate Good Friday or Easter, and I reminded her that I'm not trying to get in the way of her celebrating it. Her faith gives her much joy -- hell, it got her singing again, she's doing solos at five out of six services this weekend -- and I'm happy for her. It's when a church starts demanding that everyone worship their flavor of Sky Cop that I get cranky.

Gravatarplantsman - I'll search some Splenda recipes for those cherries.

At least, I could probally send you a couple jars of cherry preserves (if Splenda has a recipe for them).

Gravatarhey peeps

Hey back

Gravatarqlª -- [facepalm]

Molly -- yes, I did. I was going to answer this morning, when my brain was functioning more-or-less properly.

Yep. Funny, in all the fussing about BO's pastor, people forget that there's a whole brimstone tradition out there.

GravatarOh, man; I'd love that - might have to risk pouring them into a crust if you did!

Gravatarplantsman - come July/Aug you should have a present in the mail.

All Splenda requires is a specific methoxyl pectin for use with granulated Splenda.

We were supposed to get some remnants of your storm down here in Dayton, but so far, nothing.

Thank goodness, I'm sick of winter.

Gravatar- Older White House computer hard drives have been destroyed, the White House disclosed to a federal court Friday in a controversy over millions of possibly missing e-mails from 2003 to 2005.

The White House revealed new information about how it handles its computers in an effort to persuade a federal magistrate it would be fruitless to undertake an e-mail recovery plan that the court proposed.

"When workstations are at the end of their lifecycle and retired ... the hard drives are generally sent offsite to another government entity for physical destruction," the White House said in a sworn declaration filed with U.S. Magistrate Judge John Facciola.

GravatarA "specific methoxyl pectin" gotta hang onto that tidbit.

My suggestion is on top of an ice cream-like product.

GravatarI discovered about 5 pounds of sugar in a Tupperware sealed container yesterday in a cupboard.

GravatarHeh, I rarely do any baking, and I drink my coffee black. The only time I have sugar on hand is around Thanksgiving when I need it for the cranberry sauce.

GravatarI had completely forgotten I had it -- but need to make bread today, I'm out.

Why are there so many knocks on Obama
For what his ex-pastor said?
He's held responsible for what someone else does,
As if they're both in one head,
So we've been told by the Washington pundits,
I know they're wrong, wait and see,
Someday we'll find it, the Brimstone Connection,
The pundits' agendas and me.

GravatarWho says that any twit can be named an expert
Because of their right-wing views?
Somebody thought of that, they make folks believe it
By stacking the TV news,
What's so amazing is this navel-gazing
Has no base in reality,
Someday we'll find it, the Brimstone Connection,
The pundits, their egos, and me.

Used to be under their spell,
Till one day I started to fact-check....

People are half-asleep, they listen to voices,
"Trust us, we care for your souls",
This is the sweet sound that calls the young sailor
To smash his ship into the shoals,
I've heard it too many times, I ignore it,
These lying fomenters of sleaze,
Someday we'll find it, the Brimstone Connection,
The pundits and Meph'stopheles.

GravatarActually, Diane, it's almost 7:30 in Ann Arbor. That's just the way it works with me -- I see the right phrase, and boom.

GravatarAch! You should have seen when "annie" and "Bugs"
were here yesterday! The racism just spewed forth.

GravatarNow, y'see? I ended up writing the wrong song. Gotta work on the other one now, "The Brimstone Tradition". Back in a few....

GravatarWow, Filkertom, that was great! I sure wish I was going to hear you perform it next weekend.

GravatarThese lying fomenters of sleaze

Maybe a little more emphasis on sleeze...

GravatarMs. Hilton, are you available?

GravatarGood morning all.

It seems to me that if we are buying the banks for hundreds of billions of dollars, then we ought to get something out of the deal, like some firm regulations, CEO's whose bonus's and salaries and parachutes are directly related to the performance of their institutions.

So far, we are paying hundreds of billions for NOTHING!!!

No one is losing anything in this crazy system but those of us who are being forced to pay for it.

GravatarMs. Hilton, are you available?
plantsman

GravatarAnd yet, the systemic breakdown of all regulation and oversight promulgated by BushCo cannot end without a Democrat in The White House, I'm afraid.

And a strong majority in Congress.

GravatarMorning, all.

So I just scanned the front-page NYTimes article on the passport office hanky-panky, and nowhere is there a mention of the fact that said hanky-panky was carried out by contract employees, i.e. freelancers.

I.e., Blackwater.....

GravatarActually, "Stanley, Inc." of Virginia. They mail out passports for State and do "other things."

Gravatarsteve - you sound shocked.

Why?

GravatarStanley, Inc.

I wonder what the connection to BushCo is?

GravatarNo one could have imagined a bunch of poorly-paid "private-sector" workers might have ignored regs they were never properly taught -- Right, Condi?

GravatarIt seems to me that if we are buying the banks for hundreds of billions of dollars

S'not the banks, it's fucking BearStearns!!!!!! It's corporate welfare as bold as brass.

GravatarIt's the low-level Supervisors who didn't carry the breaches up the chain as they were supposed to that worry me.

GravatarI would love to have listened in on Condi and Barack's conversation. I keep imagining icebergs.

GravatarWhy aren't there that many songs about heaven
And what's on the other side?
Heaven's not interesting, it's quiet and peaceful,
Where nice folks go after they've died.
So we've been told, and some choose to believe it,
But I know what's waiting for me,
Someday I'll find it, the Brimstone Tradition,
Damnation and Satan and me.

Jesus is s'posed to be a great god of loving,
People forget his dad,
All the New Testament is Extreme Makeover,
The Old God was cranky and mad,
Flooding the world, and the Six Plagues of Egypt,
Armies drowned in the Red Sea,
Someday we'll find it, the Brimstone Tradition,
The Peace Prince, the nutjob, and me.

GravatarI wonder what the connection to BushCo is?

Only donation I found:

Nolan, Philip
Mc Lean,VA 22101
Stanley, Inc
2/20/2008
$1,000
Clinton, Hillary

GravatarAll of us under the threat
Of eternal torture once we're dead....

Have you heard preachers say that God loves you so much
He'll drop you in a lake of fire,
They'll give a play-by-play in sordid detail
I wish they weren't flush with desire.
I can live life without God, he's disturbing,
After I'm gone, wait and see,
Someday, I'll find it, the Brimstone Tradition,
I bet I'll find mythology.

GravatarS'not the banks, it's fucking BearStearns!!!!!! It's corporate welfare as bold as brass.
Sarah Deere

How much social welfare would the money spent on Bear Stearns have provided?

Gravatarsteve - you sound shocked.

Why?
Barndog, fucking snow again | 03.22.08 - 7:46 am | #

Or the fact that apparently the State Department inspector general quit under a cloud a few months ago because his brother was on the Blackwater board....

Did I say shocked???

GravatarKermit, Izzat you?

GravatarFun from Huggy Bear, via HuffPo:

This past week, Sen. Barack Obama's former pastor Jeremiah Wright has come under heavy fire in part over comments that suggested the U.S. government had introduced AIDS into black communities.

But it turns out he's not the only religious confidant to a presidential candidate who thinks the state has targeted black populations with death and disease.

Reverend Rod Parsley of the World Harvest Church of Columbus, Ohio -- whom Sen. John McCain hails as a spiritual adviser -- has suggested on several occasions that the U.S. government was complicit in facilitating black genocide.

In speeches that have gone largely unnoticed, Parsley (who is white) compares Planned Parenthood, the reproductive care and family planning group, to the Klu Klux Klan and Nazis, and describes the American government as enablers of murder for supporting the organization.

Gravatarthe guy who heads Stanley mostly gives to Republicans, and Joe Lieberman. Hillary too if that donation is accurate.

He's a Gooper.

GravatarOK, time for some breakfast, a brief lie-down, and then a whole passle of errands to run today.

Enjoy the morning, bats.

Oh, and check out what the French Surrender Monkeys are up to now.

GravatarWell, Hillary was informed Her Passport File had been breached. Maybe the guy felt guilty.

Naw.

GravatarHi ho! Kermit the Frog here. plantsman, haven't you heard this? (Serious warning: major angst/crying jag alert. I am not kidding.)

GravatarHow much social welfare would the money spent on Bear Stearns have provided?
Gimlet

so much that it makes me furious to think about it. Bastards!! Filkertom's Brimstone Tradition should be raining like hellfire down on their criminal heads right damn now.

GravatarOnly other donations I could find for Philip Nolan(no idea what he does for Stanley) are to Tom Davis,Susan Collins, and Lieberman.

GravatarWhee!!!!!

At the very least, it would've just about funded SCHIP.

GravatarMorning, folks.

GravatarGood morning you fine degenerates.

GravatarDumbya's America:

The list of patients waiting for organ transplants, which is widely used to promote organ donations, includes thousands who are ineligible for the operations, according to statistics kept by the national network that manages the allocation of organs.

More than a third of the nearly 98,000 patients on the list at any one time are classified as "inactive," meaning they could not be given an organ if it became available because they are too sick, or not sick enough, or for some other, often unexplained, reason.

GravatarS'not the banks, it's fucking BearStearns!!!!!!

they are all banks: they use our complicated fake economy game to make more money by taking the little REAL money (mortgage payments) and playing las vegas on a giant scale, and the 'true' banks are/were in on this

GravatarMore searches on Stanley associates instead of inc returns the names of many more people. Donations to Huckabee, Thompson, Lieberman, Clinton.

Gravatarsheets

GravatarMore searches on Stanley associates instead of inc returns the names of many more people.

a company that knows how DC works: lots of grease to EVERYONE and you get yourself a giant gov contract

GravatarIf we had bankrupted ourselves through foolishness and greed, would the banks bail us out for any amount of money or with any assurances at all?????

And yet we are forced to pay for their foolishness without ANY modifications on their behaviors, or their compensation packages for CEO's and CFO's. We are forced to keep them in the lifestyle that got them into this mess in the first place.

When is the democratically controlled congress going to start demanding some substantial changes in the banking industry and in compensation packages doled out to foolish people? When will they admit that the system that is in place now, with boards of directors being made up of other foolish rich people to monitor their good buddies is NOT a good system of governance?

We are being forced to pay hundreds of billions of dollars to banks, and we aren't even allowed to know who they are, in secret auctions!!!! Where are our representatives? Where are the interests of the citizens being addressed????
