"Banks “We have better things to do with that money you gave us than lend it out”
Tink by Amy Wong
Reports are surfacing that banks haven't noticeably increased lending because of the bailout money and they bloody well don't intend to, thanks. Gee, what a surprise, the bailout didn't fix what it was supposed to. No one could have predicted.
One reason why?
"Twenty-five billion dollars is obviously going to help the folks who are struggling more than Chase," he began. "What we do think it will help us do is perhaps be a little bit more active on the acquisition side or opportunistic side for some banks who are still struggling. And I would not assume that we are done on the acquisition side just because of the Washington Mutual and Bear Stearns mergers. I think there are going to be some great opportunities for us to grow in this environment, and I think we have an opportunity to use that $25 billion in that way and obviously depending on whether recession turns into depression or what happens in the future, you know, we have that as a backstop."
In other words, as long as banks are being allowed to buy up failed competitors for cents on the dollar, they're going to keep their powder dry and not lend."

I think that any new applications for bailout funds must be granted with the imperative of lending the $$ not hoarding it so they can buy at risk competitors. Truth is they are playing with fire. I don't think that the government is beyond telling the banks to put out or get fully nationalized.

ina, how do you season the baked sweet potato fries?
helena handbasket
i don't. i just slice them into thin fries. cover a cookie sheet (with edges!) with olive oil. roll the fries around to coat them. and line them up in a single layer. oven 450. after 15 minutes, i turn them over one at a time by hand. i put them back in for up to another 15, but it's usually closer to 5 (i have been known to burn fries!)
then i sprinkle a little salt on them, toss them into a cloth-lined basket, and the three of us snarf 'em! yum.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) -- Gov. Sarah Palin's signature accomplishment - a contract to build a 1,715-mile pipeline to bring natural gas from Alaska to the Lower 48 - emerged from a flawed bidding process that narrowed the field to a company with ties to her administration, an Associated Press investigation shows.
Despite Palin's boast of a smart and fair bidding process, the AP found that her team crafted terms that favored only a few independent pipeline companies and ultimately benefited the winner, TransCanada Corp.
And contrary to the ballyhoo, there's no guarantee the pipeline will ever be built; at a minimum, any project is years away, as TransCanada must first overcome major financial and regulatory hurdles.
-Despite promises and legal guidance not to talk directly with potential bidders, Palin had meetings or phone calls with nearly every major candidate, including TransCanada.

We are working our way through Will Eisner's Spirit, both original and some restarts and the recent DC version. Observations: Jesus Christ is Frank Miller ever the wrong person to direct this. Jesus Christ is Samuel L Jackson totally not capable of playing Dennis Colt (who is less Righteously Raging Black than Danny Kaye minus the musical numbers). Eisner's art is masterful, right from the beginning he is popping out of the defined panels into a sort of third dimension existing over the panels, every transition from panel to panel carefully thought out and well presented. Wow, the racism is about where you would expect it for the era, wonder how Miller will fail utterly to deal with that. And: Frank Miller is an idiot for thinking he could do this.
In short: we should've listened to Simels.

Got some great responses. One guy told me that "I don't tell anyone who I voted for, secret ballot and all. But let's just say that you wouldn't object to my vote."
Then there was one lady who said "I hate him!" Not sure if it was Merkley or Obama, but I think Obama, because I mentioned his name and she said it again, louder.
I also encouraged people to get their ballots in early, as if they do so, the voter registration rolls are cross referenced to the phone numbers, and if your ballot is recorded, they make a note of it and the computer doesn't call those numbers. An incentive to get that ballot in early!

CBS News: New Study Details Massive Voter Roll Purges Underway in At Least 19 States
CBS Has Noticed, Why Hasn't Obama or the DNC?
Tonight's CBS Evening News finally covered what may well be the November Surprise that we've been trying to warn about for months here at The BRAD BLOG: Massive voter roll purges being done in secret, with little or no oversight, and often under federal Justice Department cover, in states and counties around the country.
And the Democrats, who likely have the most to lose via such secret purges, are doing little or nothing about it.
The CBS story, posted below (appx 2 mins) starts with an elderly New Jersey voter who was suddenly removed from the voting rolls after thirty years, for apparently no reason whatsoever, before launching into findings from a new non-partisan Brennan Center for Justice study on "Voter Purges".
We've yet to read this Brennan report, but the brief coverage from tonight's Evening News notes 10,000 voters purged in Mississippi, 21,000 in Louisiana and "to top it off, another new study discovered 19 states are ignoring federal law (the National Voter Registration Act), banning systematic purges within 90 days of a federal election."
Among those 19, are a number of battleground states. The report lists: Alabama, Colorado, Connecticut, Delware, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Maryland, Masachusetts, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, Texas and Washington, as places where massive purges have recently taken place.

I don't THINK they can steal it this time, but I expect some wavering Republicans will return to brand loyalty -- still, people are worrying about losing their jobs, their health-care, their homes, their savings & their retirement -- not good for the incumbent party!
This is a very Red area of MI -- the only time the Democrats won this House seat was in 1932 (& it is not going to happen this year) & the local rag had an article "Rural Voters Uncertain of Who to Vote For" -- WOW! -- one life long Republican said she wanted to vote for McCain, "but people say he will just be another Bush" -- Rove may have destroyed the Republican Party for the rest of my lifetime (not that I would complain)

Hey Glenn -
Asked around the hood where last I parked it.
Latino construction workers said that 'it had a ticket and the city towed it.'
Except, there's no record of a ticket at that spot, nor is the car *supposedly* in impound (I checked from outside the fence; didn't see it in there).
Had one parking monitor riding my ass with enforcement - he followed this car for a couple miles as it moved.
He's my prime suspect at this point.
Except - he's working under the authority OF the Milwaukee PD.
Ain't that the suck-all?

BTW -- I also mentioned to our guests that the policies of the current Republican Party destroy small businesses & they agreed enthusiastically! Wal-Mart eats Mom & Pop businesses as policy (of course, all the big box stores do).
When I was a kid we had all kinds of neighborhood stores (we still had neighborhoods -- sidewalks & everything) & neighborhood stores -- things cost more, but the society of the time thought it was worth it.

1) Gotta find out where the car is.
2) Gotta have the Milwaukee PD actually do police work, such as ask questions in the area where it was last seen.
3) Don't want to go there, but I have connections with the upper end of the Wisconsin State Patrol...
4) For the short-term, I'm just putting the heat on - posters, a classified ad (for which I actually NEED the police report - and I need to go cross-town to get a copy - ain't THAT a blast??!!)

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) _ An Arkansas television anchorwoman found beaten at her home died Saturday from her injuries, hospital officials said.
Anne Pressly, 26, died at St. Vincent Infirmary Medical Center, hospital spokeswoman Margaret Preston said. Preston said family members declined to release any other details about Pressly's death.
Pressly had a small role in the new Oliver Stone movie "W," which was filmed in Shreveport, La. She appears briefly as a conservative commentator who speaks favorably of President Bush's "Mission Accomplished" event on an aircraft carrier shortly after the start of the Iraq war.

Here in WI, we're already hearing stories of folks who've voted for decades at the same address and poll not being on the rolls for early voting. Since we have same day registration even on Nov 4th, the smart thing to do is to bring along qualifying documentation.
States that don't allow for this, then disqualified voters cast a provisional ballot. Last time, those didn't get counted for the most part. This time, I expect the Obama lawyers would make sure they get counted or at least would raise a holy stink about it.

I'm thinking if the PI was a former detective who still has a good relationship with the department, they would be more apt to pay attention. How easy those are to find, I have no idea. Maybe the detective would be the one to ask...

Deacon -- Take some food to share.
The calling is great if they give you a list of likely supporters who you are just reminding to vote.
If you're working from something sloppier, you'll get some hang-ups and crankiness.
I can't do it this year but understand the Obama campaign lists are compiled very efficiently. Good records or who has been called and when, who didn't answer and needs to be called again, that sort of thing.
I worked with some pretty poor Kerry lists in 2004 so we ended up with a lot of unnecessary redundancy. Most people were pretty understanding though, just told us they'd already been called a few too many times, were planning on voting, asking us to please record accurately so they wouldn't be called anymore.

Umm, no. Los Alamos is in the central south of the northwest quadrant of the state. Santa Rosa is on I-40 about ~100-110 miles east of Albuquerque and Carrizozo is north central of the southwest quandrant of the state, maybe 75 miles south of Albuquerque.
I've kind of thought of Santa Rosa mostly existing to service I-40, and Carrizozo as a sort of backwater libertarian-redneck area. Carrizozo is close to some really wild geology, though.

Yeah... my guy, who's a Kymco/Sym/Genuine dealer, has had supply chain issues all spring and summer, but in late summer, inventory loosened up some. He was putting people on lists, too... typical wait was 3-6 weeks.

Well, just to raise a note of caution--NM is known as the "Land of Entrapment."
Land prices are not nearly as cheap as they should be, and the water rights situation is about as legally weird as you'll ever find it in the US. Small-town corruption is probably more prevalent here than it is in the north.
It's not a wealthy state--mediocre schools and school spending, low wages, and right-wingers control a considerable portion of the state. It's full of poor people who keep electing oil & gas and ranching potentates to public office.
But, it is, in places, just breathtakingly beautiful.

Late to the party: nice anthem by Swift; dug the guitar work.
4 hrs at a BHO ofc. today (in SoFla)--anywhere from 10-15 phone bankers most of the day; plus lotsa canvassers; haven't worked a campaign since McGovern (yes, I'm ancient) so I can't compare it to anything, but the joint sure was rockin'.
I'm not doing the Voting Rights Atty thing until Nov 4th,but as far as I hear no major contretemps YET, just the usual FloriDUH stupidity, including machines overheating & having to be taken out of commission & people not having proper i.d., & long waits (in large part due to ReThuglican state legislature refusing to give ample hours for early vote--Crist had been lobbied to help get hours extended, but so far no go). When I hear from the Army of Lawyers, I'll letcha know if there are any serious challenge/suppression issues being detected thus far.

Or maybe another part of NM - Roswell? T or C? Silver City?
Roswell, forget. They've got "we're an All-American City-itis." T or C is mostly to service the summer crowd around Elephant Butte.
Silver City has traditionally been very right-wing, but there has been an influx of hipper people from Tucson and Texas in the last few years, but, it's still very conservative.
The trick is to find cheap land and water together, close enough to a metro center to make life possible.
The place I'd end up, had I the money, would be in the east Sierra Blanca foothills. Small towns along the service road, and some larger blocks of land still available north of Tinnie. Some artsy-fartsy places for diversion, and good scenery near El Capitan.
Used to be a great place in Capitan to eat--Hotel Chango--run by a guy by the name of Jerold Flores. He was trained in Paris, place had, I think, only twenty-one seats, but the food was great. He gave it up to buy the hotel in Lincoln.

I am fine, my dear. Just a little damp around the edges from the dash to the parking garage after the concert.
And you're most welcome on the email. Have you considered selling the movie rights for your family ordeal?
When does monsieur get back from his trip? I hope he brings you nice presents.

Well, then, I defer to the local perspective.

"Only if it can be done as a comedy."
My sons and I thought about it but our family's already been done on tv - we are Malcolm in the middle.
really - they once got kicked out of a grocery store for deciding that the V8's needed to be in the vegetable section and attempting to move them there one bottle at a time.
They also got kicked out of a park for broad jumping from picnic table to picnic table.
and a mcdonalds for starting a brawl in the play place - hey someone picked on their little brother.
it's a wonder I have any hair left.

(checks Google Maps to figure out where the hell this is...) Damn! Right up the hill from Carrizozo!
That "right up the hill" is about a fifty-mile drive, and it's all two-lane on ill-maintained roads.
If you look at the map, you can see that the roads form an oval, mostly around the mountain range, although US 70 goes across Apache Pass just south of the Mescalero reservation (at ~7600 feet).
The stretch toward is Ruidoso is lined with very small towns. And I mean small--gas station/convenience store and post office-small--which generally means less interference with artistic DFHs, but, higher land prices. San Patricio is one of those areas.
