“It’s a bald-faced lie because John McCain will improve the tax code so that middle-class paychecks aren’t used to pay government bureaucrats but instead will pay for the access to health care Americans deserve. Barack Obama, the most liberal member of the U.S. Senate, has a different plan: higher taxes, a trillion dollars in new spending, and a radical turn toward government-run health care that promises to be as efficient as a trip to the DMV," said McCain-Palin spokesman Tucker Bounds.

Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin is accusing Democrat Barack Obama of "palling around with terrorists" for his association with a former 1960s radical.
Palin was referring to Bill Ayers, one of the founders of the group the Weather Underground. The group took credit for bombings, including nonfatal explosions at the Pentagon and the U.S. Capitol four decades ago.
In remarks to GOP donors in Englewood, Colo., on Saturday, Palin said Obama seems to see the U.S. as being so imperfect that, in her words, "he's palling around with terrorists who would target their own country."

That $1-2 million is their net worth, not what they've been making in the last couple of years. If he had a few good years fishing early on and invested it, it's possible. Housing's fairly expensive in Alaska, so, if their house was included in the net worth, that could account for a fair amount of it.
With as many kids as they have, if they just squirreled away the oil profit redistribution checks for twenty years, that would account for a fair portion of it.
That's really not the part that intrigues me. It's the per diem and travel. Usually, states have fairly firm rules about per diem--it has to be in the state's interest to receive it. Flying her kids around doesn't seem to be in the state's interest, nor is her working at home. So, did she bully someone to authorize the payments?

Minnesota Presidential Teeter Totter Tips Toward McCain: In an election for President of the United States in Minnesota today, 10/02/08, 33 days from the vote, John McCain and Barack Obama finish effectively even, according to a SurveyUSA poll conducted exclusively for KSTP-TV in Minneapolis, WDIO-TV in Duluth, KAAL-TV in Rochester, and KSAX-TV in Alexandria. The nominal advantage today goes to McCain, who is atop Obama 1 percentage point, 47% to 46%, within the survey's 3.7 percentage point margin of sampling error. But: Compared to an identical SurveyUSA poll 20 days ago, Obama is down 3 points. How much of this is movement and how much of this is "noise" is unclear.
Minnesota behaves unlike other states in some respects. Among women, there is movement to McCain, at a time when McCain is losing ground among women elsewhere. Among voters younger than Obama, there movement to McCain, at a time when Obama is consolidating support among young voters elsewhere. Among voters older than McCain, there is movement to Obama, at a time when older voters elsewhere are sticking by McCain. In Western MN, which abuts the Dakotas, there is movement to McCain. In Northeastern MN, which overhangs Michigan, there is see-sawing back to Obama.
Complicating this analysis is the emergence of a possible protest vote. 12% of Independents, 8% of young voters, 6% of men, 6% of those who almost never go to church, 5% of Conservatives and 5% of Twin Cities voters tell SurveyUSA that they will vote for neither McCain nor Obama, but rather "some other candidate." How much of this protest can be attributed to the failure of the U.S. House of Representatives to pass an economic recovery bill, the day before interviewing for this survey began, is unclear. Ron Paul held his campaign "convention" in Minnesota a month ago. Bob Barr and Ralph Nader are on the ballot in Minnesota. Voters who tell SurveyUSA they are for "some other candidate" also tell SurveyUSA they are likely to change their minds. It is unclear how many actual votes will be siphoned from McCain and/or Obama on Election Day, however, polling results from the Norm Coleman / Al Franken U.S. Senate race in Minnesota, also released today by SurveyUSA, suggest the protest may be non-trivial.

I wish I had quit the Senate and given up my health care benefits so that I could nurse my severely-injured kids back to health from the comfort and safety of the nearest shelter.
Seriously, that's silly. Biden made a choice and I applaud his choice. He obviously worked v hard to balance a political career and being a single parent and, as a single parent, I applaud him. But he could have made other choices. He could have left the Senate and gotten a local job and been home more often. I'm not suggesting he should have done that. But I won't criticize Palin for wanting the same thing: a political career and parenthood, esp. given that she's got a spouse who can help out and who I don't see being criticized for his parenting skills.
Why is it that we HAVE to convince ourselves that the woman is a BAD mother? If she weren't too disinterested and ambitious, maybe we could hate on her for being a helicopter mom? Can we at least ask ourselves what it is in our culture that makes it necessary to criticize women as bad mothers even when that has nothing to do with the position for which they're applying?

Palin in Colo: McCain is paling around w/ Terrorists
McCain shill on Fox, declining to answer surprisingly pertinent question about McCain having to fight for Ind(!), & what he'll do about it: We're gonna tell the folks that Obama has radical associations that make him unsafe for Murca.
Millionaire rock stars are traditionally more synonymous with conspicuous consumption than the workers' struggle. But artists including Robbie Williams, Radiohead and The Verve are among those who might be about to swap sex, drugs and rock'n'roll for banners, braziers and manifestos - having formed a new organisation to stand up for their rights.
Among the dozens of founder members of the Featured Artists' Coalition are Radiohead's Thom Yorke and Red Wedge veteran Billy Bragg, - who did after all record There is Power in a Union - but also former Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour, The Klaxons, DJ Paul Oakenfold, Craig David, Iron Maiden and the Kaiser Chiefs.
All argue that the new organisation, to be launched tomorrow at the In the City conference in Manchester, is vital to represent their interests as the music industry is turned on its head by digital distribution. Damon Gough, of Badly Drawn Boy, said: "I think with the digital age and record companies dispersing and disbanding, young bands need a governing voice that will support them and help protect their work."

tee hee - Britain's baffling collection of ungrammatical, misspelt, out of date and plain wrong public signs is to have a national audit, with the public recruited as error spotters.
Starting with Leeds, local authorities hope to eradicate signs which point both ways at once, publicise closed attractions or demolished landmarks, and omit aids to clarity such as capital letters and apostrophes.
The move follows years of piecemeal campaigning which has led to minor successes. Observant residents of west London, for instance, can still enjoy a series of handpainted apostrophes on street signs not designed to have room for them.
A lobby pressed in the early 1980s for the punctuation to be restored to what new signs mistakenly called New Kings Road. Overcome with shame, the local council sprinkled apostrophes the length of the long street, and everywhere else from Parson's Green to World's End.
In the most recent Washington Post-ABC News national poll, more than half of all voters said they were "very concerned" that the failure of the first bailout vote would cause a "severe economic decline." By a ratio of 2 to 1, they blamed the legislations' defeat on Republicans.
Neil Newhouse, a partner in the Republican polling firm Public Opinion Strategies, echoed van Lohuizen's sentiment. "The bailout crisis has had a corrosive effect on the national political environment, and that impacts not just John McCain, but GOP candidates up and down the ticket," he said.
The proximity to the election added to the chaos on Capitol Hill this week as lawmakers sought to pass a $700 billion package to stabilize banks and financial markets. In the House, most vulnerable Republicans opposed the version that failed on Monday, as well as the revamped legislation that passed easily yesterday. But in the Senate, which voted Wednesday, just two vulnerable Republicans, Sens. Elizabeth Dole (N.C.) and Roger Wicker (Miss.), opposed the bill (along with the only Democrat who is seen as endangered, Louisiana Sen. Mary Landrieu).
Seven Republicans who are being targeted for defeat by Democrats backed the plan: Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.), and Sens. Saxby Chambliss (Ga.), Ted Stevens (Alaska); Norm Coleman (Minn.); Gordon Smith (Ore.), Susan Collins (Maine) and John E. Sununu (N.H.).

Whenever Russia near US airspace, Sarah Palin's phone does not ring, despite her claims.
NORAD has slammed GOP VP Candidate Sarah Palin's claim to CBS' Katie Couric that she has command authority over US space guardians.
Spokesman for the North American Aerospace Defense Command, Air Force Maj. Allen Herritage told the NY Daily News. "She doesn't have any role in that process."
"The authority to launch and respond to a Russian incursion lies with the Alaska NORAD Region commander" solely.
Moscow's bombers have skirted Alaskan airspace 20 times but have not violated it during Palin's tenure.
And when interceptors scramble from Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, Sarah Palin is not speed-dialed.
"The commander does not call the governor," Major Herritage clarified.

I will tell you why I am one of the 100 or so visitors to this blog. It’s a microcosm of America. I can check in here and see America in all its glory. Here at Eschaton it is a virtual race to the bottom. Nothing good has a chance. Namestealing not only is accepted but it wins the day. All rejoice in the victory of nonsense over thoughtfulness. And not one of you cares about anything except being right. You are not right of course, but you support one another into thinking you are.
For a couple of months I have been commenting, you all can call it an experiment. I must say that I have determined that nothing will get to you. Nothing will break into the American dream as it exists today. But it is really a nightmare instead. You all think you are different from the other Americans, but you’re not. I am sorry for you. Ronjazz is you. every one of you. And this is what is so difficult for the world outside of America to understand, you guys delight in it, pat yourselves on the back and that’s the end of it. You are number 1.

Well, the good news in this is that the residence time in the atmosphere for methane is only something like twelve years.
The bad news is that it degrades to CO2 and water vapor, both greenhouse gases with much, much longer residence times.

Earliest Reference Describes Christ as 'Magician'
Oct. 1, 2008 -- A team of scientists led by renowned French marine archaeologist Franck Goddio recently announced that they have found a bowl, dating to between the late 2nd century B.C. and the early 1st century A.D., that, according to an expert epigrapher, could be engraved with the world's first known reference to Christ. If the word "Christ" refers to the Biblical Jesus Christ, as is speculated, then the discovery may provide evidence that Christianity and paganism at times intertwined in the ancient world. The full engraving on the bowl reads, "DIA CHRSTOU O GOISTAIS," which has been interpreted by French epigrapher and professor emeritus Andre Bernand as meaning either, "by Christ the magician" or "the magician by Christ."

there's a rumor that sarah palin is actually tina fey's identical cousin. fey and sarah set up an elaborate ruse in an effort to boost fey's career even higher. "strike while the iron is popular" tina reportedly said.
after the election, they thought, mccain and the republican party would be completely punked. the plan went awry when less intelligent republicans, notably bay buchanan, somehow managed to convince the rank and file to actually get behind "palin" - and it seemed like she might actually win! in a desperate effort to avoid possible treason charges, "palin" came up with the idea of giving an interview to katie couric.

Let me point out that my listening to Winger Radio is making me think that '08 will be settled just as '00 was - by SCOTUS.
Here's my observation: Winger smarties are making a BIG deal of "voter fraud" and "voting irregularities" - surprisingly, these all happen in minority communities, especially those where ACORN came out and did voter registration drives.
Mark my words - they will be in court in SEVERAL STATES ON THE NIGHT OF THE 4th AND INTO THE 5th doing their best to exclude votes from various precincts, from overseas voters (YES, including troops), and from early/absentee voters.
All they need to do is contest X + 1 votes in states where the difference is X. Which they will do.
And if it goes to SCOTUS, they'll go 5-4, just as in 2000. Precedent, dontcha know...

So, was the word "Christ" a neologism coined early in the 1st century of the common era, devised and popularized (and thereafter universally understood) to refer to exactly one specific person, namely Jesus of Nazareth?
catalexis
the word "christ" is from the greek word 'khristos', meaning 'the annointed one'. this is because the jewish messiah was supposed to be an earthly king, and kings are annointed with scented holy oil, sometimes known as 'chrism', from the same root. so, the appelation 'christ' merely means 'the annointed one', an implication that jesus was the annointed messiah/king predicted by isaiah, that would rule over the kingdom of israel with such righteousness that all the nations of the earth would acknowledge his authority and submit to him
if one conveniently forgets that it is kings that are annointed, and not gods, or sons of god (whatever that is), then one can accept 'annointed' as a proper name for the 'christ' invented by christians

If they're targeting Collins in Maine they need to step it up. She's been way ahead.
Collins and Snowe both are adored by the Republicans who own all the electronic media, including Maine Public Broadcasting which is controlled by a bunch of Republicans. Tom Allen, who has been one of our two congressmen for years, has hardly ever been mentioned in all that time while Collins has been endlessly flacked by the "news" media. There is no chance that Allen is going to win in that media climate.

At any moment the other night in the debate between Sarah Palin and Sen. Joe Biden, I expected Sarah Palin to say "Fer sure" or "gag me with a rubber hose," breaking into Valley Girl-speak.
I wasn't fooled by the cosmetic job done on Sarah Palin in preparation for her debate against a true lion, a true patriot of our democracy.
From her opening question, "Can I call you Joe?" which was a set-up for her later statement "Say it isn't so Joe" to her reading Republican talking points from cue cards and not even answering the question put to her, I don't care at all for her "Aw shucks" demeanor or her somewhat-strained ability to parrot Republican talking points.
We need someone with brains and a heart, both as vice-president and president, but neither Palin nor McCain really rise to this level...while Barack Obama and Joe Biden have both the brains and hearts to lead us out of this devastating Republican wilderness caused by greed, corruption and outright un-American Republican attitudes and policies.

NEW YORK - Washington's financial bailout plan is now law. So the credit spigot will start flowing again, banks will resume lending, and an economic recovery can begin, right?
Wrong. Experts say the most important thing that needs to happen before the $700 billion bailout even has a chance of working: Home prices must stop falling. That would send a signal to banks that the worst has passed and it's safe to start doling out money again.

That would send a signal to banks that the worst has passed and it's safe to start doling out money again.
because there is nothing in the bill that compels banks to loan anything to anyone.
similarly, the bill gives the treasury the power to use some of the money to issue additional credit through such institutions as the small business administration, but it is in no way required to do so. barney frank intends to "encourage" paulson to do so.
We'll see, but I don't expect much, except the saving of Goldman Sachs so Paulson has somewhere to go in February.
My advice: follow the money.

In another lifetime I was a fifth grade teacher for most of the time that I taught. One of the "Things" that was covered in our English Curriculum were state abbreviations.
Having said that, in the last two weeks I have seen stories from heretofore respected news sources that have reference the state of Maine with this abbreviation MN (which is, of course, Minnesota. Maine is ME.) And now we have this headline, Al Franken leading in MI senate race (5)
I wonder if Carl Levin knows he is running against fellow Democrat Al Franken?

Is Al Franken running in Minnesota - abbreviated, MN?

WaPo said much the same yesterday; that the bailout bill won't thaw the credit market.
I don't have a hell of a lot of faith in it myself, but when I read people writing blog entries like "See! See! It's already failed!!!!!!!!!!!", just because the credit markets didn't recover 15 minutes after it was passed, I really wince.
Any good, if any, it would do will take several weeks or months to be felt.
Interestingly, people were predicting that the dollar would take a huge nosedive versus the euro after the bill was passed. That didn't happen, because, after the wave American carnage, it's been the European banks that have been blowing up over the last two weeks. In fact, it's probably been deteriorating the European situation that has kept the credit markets in a total, absolute frenzy despite the bill's passage. A large German bank just died today according to Bloomberg.
There's going to have to be a worldwide effort to stop the bleeding in the end, it seems.

The timing of this bail-out is what intrigues me.
It was a rush job just six weeks before a major election.
And then I remembered Nixon's Campaign to Re-elect the President (CREEP) with it's multi-million dollar Slush Fund.
Have we just witnessed the creation of another Republican-controlled, highly secretive Slush Fund, but this time with $700 Billion in taxpayer funds footing the bill?
Apparently, all reporting requirements of Paulson to our representatives in Congress don't occur until AFTER the election.
In other words, what mischief do the culture of corruption and greed Republicans (through Paulson) have in mind in the few short weeks before the November election, with Paulson literally being given the keys to the bank?
Just like what happened over in Iraq through Bremer's CPA and what happened in the Gulf Coast states following Hurricane Katrina, how much of this $700 Billion in the next four weeks will be doled out to right-wing crony Republican companies and individuals (as well as any wavering "independents", in a Republican attempt to steal another election?
Do you trust the Republicans? I don't. This is why the "timing" of this hurry-up-and-pass $700 Billion bailout plan (plus the pork added at the last minute) strikes me as so odd.

It was a rush job just six weeks before a major election.

It was a rush job just six weeks before a major election.
The election had everything to do with the timing and the rush. Plus the fact that the dead credit market was already showing up in the real economy. No one was going to risk that a month before the election.
It's what comes after the election that is going to make any difference and that's only if Democrats win big enough. If it's the Republicans it's going to be a catastrophe.

Thank you, plantsman.
Of course, the Republicans over the past eight years haven't done anything to cause anyone to be suspicious of their intentions, have they?
If there's a reporting requirement in this just-passed bail-out bill that says that Paulson must immediately forward to congressional committees the "receipt" for any money he's doled out of this $700 Billion Republican-controlled Slush Fund (showing to whom the money has been given), then I must looking at a different bill.
Hey, someone under Paulson at the Treasury Department could just send an e-mail to a congressional committee in-box informing our representatives immediately about any taxpayer-funded payment being made.
So, over the next four weeks, Paulson will probably announce any high-level money disbursement, but what is to keep him from disbursing our money to crony Republican companies and individuals...with the "receipts" three months from now "disappearing" like all the e-mails and documents in the Bush/Cheney White House?
So, yes, I am suspicious, as any patriotic U.S. citizen should be after the past eight years of run-amok rampant right-wing corruption.

I have read that McCain is going off the air in Michigan on Monday. That will be a relief. A while ago he actually had two advertisements in a row on the TV. It is amazing, the McCain campaign has got to get the two-faced, lying out of both sides of the mouth award. I've never seen anything like it, and I can just remember the first Eisenhower election. McCain is proof that a Republican can have any reputation they want from the American media and it doesn't have to have a shred of truth to it.

I actually agree with you richard.
But Paul Krugman has been warning about this looming market/credit/banking crisis for years.
And the Republicans shrugged their shoulders, continued their "free-market," anti-regulatory, hands-off policies...and then dropped a $700 Billion Bail-out Bomb on the U.S. Congress just before this upcoming election.
Remember, the signs of a market meltdown go back months, if not a year or two.
Foreclosures mounting. Credit being strained to the breaking point. Long-established firms tanking.
And the Republicans shrugged their "fiscal shoulders" until everything reached critical mass...at which time they dropped a $700 Billion Bail-out Bomb on the U.S. Congress and American citizens just before the November elections.
So, Hell Yes, I'm suspicious...just as any patriotic U.S. citizen should be where sneaky, conniving, Karl Rovian Republicans are concerned.
