I think he is paying pennance to Hillary by willingly being the bad guy in her campaign and saying the things that she as the candidate cannot say. I've been catching up on DailyHowler.com today, and, as usual, reading Somerby makes my gorge rise and my blood boil.
The link takes you to Wednesday's Howler, and the part about NYTimes reporter Patrick Healy taking a situation and words out of context from a Bill Clinton appearance on Charlie Rose, then repeating his incorrect take on what happened, with MoDo and then Frank Rich (I just typoed "Rank Rich" and almost left it in) picked up the, well, Healy lie and ran with it.
The raging bull Clinton story is now firmly affixed in the group mind of the Villagers of the Damn Idiots.
What gets to me is not just this almost archetypal MCM smear attack on Clinton, which is bad enough, but that his happens over and over and over.
Right now, many Obama supporters are not too concerned about MCM malfeasance if it applies to the Clintons or their supporters, but, dear Democrats, whoever is the Dem presidential nominee will get this treatment.
By not standing up to the MCMers now, Obama's supporters have little ground to complain when it is their candidate being lied about. When The Politico or Drudgico places ugly stories in play about Obama, then some will howl--but where has the howling by Obama supporters been when lies were promulgated by Drudgico and the MCMers about Hillary, and Bill?
I sometimes can't believe that in 2008 we're seeing the same lousy jounamalism we saw applied to Gore for so long. Back then most of us had no Media Matters or DailyHowler to help us understand what was going on.
Precious few were published or available to lift the curtain on the tricks and lies of the MCM and Bush's campaign. Krugman wrote truth--helped keep me sane. This American Life exposed how two Big Paper reporters from the NYTimes and the WaPo slandered Gore about Love Canal. But other favorite slanderous lies of the MCMers have lived on to be used to attack and make fun of Gore for the past nearly 10 years. IIRC, FAIR was around, but I'm not sure I knew about that organization. The Atlantic Monthly and Harper's wrote articles which told truths and used facts.
But the MCM was a foetid swamp of lies, misconstructions, Rovian tricks--much as it is now, alas.

Well I should start by admitting that I'm not a regular CNN viewer, because I don't much like their editorial decisions, so I'm hardly their best defender. But when something really major happens, I always seem to find myself there, because after the BBC they have the best worldwide correspondent coverage. That is news, and they are a news organization when they do that. I will not buy the assertion that they are just a proaganda organization. It is more complicated than that. As to NPR, I think they are still quite a bit better than CNN, which is why I listen to them.

But I remember the early days, when they covered news, not celebrity bios and book/album releases. Daniel Schorr ran out of insights 10 years ago, and Scott Simon is worthless, IMHO. The interesting comments of interesting people, a veritable stable on NPR (and staple, for that matter) is now the insipid "This I Believe" and the maudlin Story Corps. (or however they spell it) items. Which aren't occassional enough, for my taste.

Many, many moons ago, I know of two "local" TV news operations that had "documentary units". They would regularly produce half-hour documentaries on subjects that had (usually) local implications. They'd cover the gamut from local history to "how things work" to issues of the day. Sometimes, the stations would show them in segments on their news shows, but they'd also run them complete in a regularly-scheduled spot.
These were LOCAL stations. CNN or MSNBC can't do the same thing on a daily basis?

It's been covered pretty well in the little old newspapers out here - local and all that. It's always much more preferable that one be busted and on the streets in a warm climate, after all. The only thing that is mildly surprising about the situation is that municipalities are actually supporting the camps. So much friendlier than the conditions found in Arizona, where the migra or the state police bust you and throw you back over the border, (whether you're Mexican or not).

The line, for me, was drawn by the British (?) journalist who was taken to task for releasing information that was supposedly "off the record." When challenged about it by Tucker Carlson, she said she didn't realize American journalists were so spineless (or something like that). She reminded me of the British journalist who asked Bush questions he wasn't supposed to be asked.

Those following the proceedings during the past year of the Senate Select Committee on POW and MIA Affairs have been mystified by the rabid actions of the one man on the committee who should be grateful that for the nearly three decades there have been activists in America who have refused to let die the issue of the fate of Americans lost and missing in Southeast Asia from the Vietnam War.
I am speaking of course of Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.). None of the Senators on the Select Committee have been as vicious in their attacks on POW/MIA family members and activists than the man behind the mask of war hero, former POW, and patriotic United States Senator . . .
Not even Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.), who went into his job as chairman of the Select Committee with a predisposition that no one was left alive in Southeast Asia, that it was therefore "time to put the war behind us" and normalize relations with Hanoi, has shown such a bias against those who have fought and kept alive the POW/MIA cause.
Not even Sen. Kerry, with his own record as an anti-war protester during the early 1970s after serving in Vietnam--has turned a totally deaf ear to the numerous individuals and groups who are, correctly or not, convinced that Americans were and are alive in captivity in Southeast Asia.
What, therefore, motivates a John McCain to attack as a pit bull everyone and anyone who has the opinion that men are still alive in the very same captivity that he himself once experienced? Mr. McCain disguises his attacks on the POW/MIA by claiming he is on the committee to ask "the tough questions" to grill and berate in order to get to the truth. What motivates the man, who at the same time has shown a sensitive, almost patronizing approach to U.S. government officials who have lied to the committee?

Those two states, one of them under Republican direction, disenfranchised their voters quite knowingly and callously by deliberately flouting party rules agreed to by the other 48 states. Obama, and Clinton have fuck all to do with that, or a possible remedy. In FLA, you've got to convince Crist and the Republican legislature to change the law in order to allow a redo. What are the chances of that? It's a matter for the states and the DNC and ultimately the credentials and rules people to figure out.
