Patterson is not known as a particularly left-leaning writer or speaker, IIRC.

I think a meta-discussion of the importance of Birth of a Nation in American culture should have preceded or accompanied Prof. Patterson's remarks. Many Americans know of that infamous epic but most have not seen it end to end.
