Gravatar This issue is about the future, not the past. The public supports a national popular vote by as much as they support term limits, and for good reason -- most of us are completely shut out of a meaningful vote for president. I suspect this effort would be moving even more quickly without the 2000 election.

Remember that backers of a national popular vote for president have included Richard Nixon, Jerry Ford, George Herbert Walker Bush, Bob Dole, John Danforth, Howard Baker and many more. This eventually won't be a partisan issue.

Gravatar It may be about the future for you, but I guarantee you that it's all about the past for embittered Democrats.

And as for you, before you change a 220-year-old practice, you'll need to have solutions to the new problems you'll create. I personally don't see any way around the national recount problem or the voter fraud problem.

Last, your list of Republican backers of the national popular vote means little. Aside from Tricky Dick, who died before he could witness the travesty of 2000, this is a list of Republicans whose major goal in politics was to be liked by the Washington Post editorial board. No, thanks!

Gravatar C'MON! You know that if Rudy is beating Hillary in the polls come October 2008, the General Assembly will call a special session and reverse this law!

I think this is just a protest thing. It's got no teeth at all.

MD politicians are scum.
