Jeremy, I very strongly completely disagree with you.
"I find it hard to believe that New Zealand's justice system still lays the blame for rape on the victim"- I look forward to your next post about a drunk driver injuring himself in a car accident saying "I find it hard to believe that New Zealand's justice system still lays the blame for car accidents on the victim".
While I strongly disapprove of the mans actions in this case I believe the girl has a very large degree of responsibility for the rape lays with the girl. SHE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR HER OWN ACTIONS. She chose to get drunk, she chose to smoke cannibis, she chose to hang out with this man much older than her (What did she think the man wanted?), she chose to break the law. The descisons she made were made by herself- no one else. There is a simple thing here that the girl might not have understood- YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CONSEQUENCES OF YOUR OWN ACTIONS. I am pleased to hear the man got bought to justice before the courts to be punished for the crimes he commited. Will the girl be punished for her crimes? The rape doesn't make an excuse for underage drinking or illegal drug use. The true miscarriage of justice here will be if the girl is not prosecuted for using cannibis (an illegal drug which I want to stay illegal) and underage drinking.

That is an absolutely disgusting and morally reprehensible view to hold Nicholas.
Grow a sense of empathy. And learn to punctuate correctly.

Nothing justifies rape, Nicholas. I'm not going to dignify your comment with any further arguement.

Jeremy, you must have failed to read my comments correctly, as you appear to accuse me of trying to justify rape. In my previous comment I said "I strongly disaprove of the mans actions". To make my beliefs on the rapists actions more clear I will now say that the 36 year old rapist has commited actions that are morally wrong that should be rightfully condemmed by other people, and the two year prison sentence he got was too soft for such a serious crime. However no amount of wrongdoing by the rapist makes underage drinking or the use of illegal drugs right. What I was trying to say in the previous comment is two wrongs don't make a right, not that underage drinking and cannibis smoking justifies rape. There is good news for all those who want crinimals to get punished (including those who steal taxpayers money for electioneering) at http://www.nzherald.co.nz/

No Nicholas, you just contradicted yourself. First you're trying to lay atleast some portion of blame onto the victim in that she got her self into that situation and to paraphrase you - what did she expect? Then in the face of the readerships collective reprehension, you water down your point to nothing i can make sense of. UNLESS what you're trying to say is that the rapists punishment for rape was jail and the girls punishment for underage drinking and smoking a little weed was to be raped. So eveyone got what they deserve, right?

Sorry if I appear to contradict myself. I do believe jail should be the rapists punishment for rape, but I don't believe the girl deserves to be raped- infact I don't believe that anyone deserves to be raped. If you hang out with a man much older than you who might be a potential rapist, dring lots of alcohol and smoke cannibis, It is not suprising if you do end up getting raped. In the same way if your expensive car unlocked with the key in the ignition you shouldn't be suprised if the car gets stolen, even though I believe that no-one deserves to get their car stolen and prison is a just punishment for car theft.

Because people hang out with potential rapists for fun?
If that's your reasoning, then any man is a potential rapist.

yes. any man is a potential rapist.
it's in our nature, and any woman should be wary of us.
